It was exactly the kind of game she'd anticipated being brought up on that last night - without children to supervise, and an adult to supervise them.

And yet, when she'd boldly answered her turn with a fearless dare, she hadn't expected this. Emma's dare hanging over her like some kind of omen of doom, the teasing ooooohs echoing in the forest as she looks from the social media star, to the victim of her own bout of bravery - one very displeased Frank, a bottle of beer halfway to his lips as he recognizes the call of his own name.

He'd smirked when they'd first invited him into the last party of the summer. Asked if there would be beer, and then rolled his eyes at the mention of games. Only tagging along because, well, it's not like he had a choice - or anything else to do, for that matter.

And now, he's buzzing - well, Birdie imagines he has to be, he's consumed most of the beer on his own - and the target of a dare that felt like something out of a movie. Something with mean girls and good girls and guys that didn't want to be caught in the middle of their bullshit.

Frank isn't caught in the middle. He's in the spotlight.

Catcalls and whistles and leering gazes watching as Birdie swings herself to her feet and trots over to him. Barefoot and unafraid - or, maybe a little afraid, but only with angering him. All bouncing curls, and bright green eyes as she drops down to the ground in front of him, knees knocking into the dirt between his spread legs. An apologetic look about her as she cups his face between her little hands and kisses him. Something gentle, and a little too sweet, tasting of ripe watermelon and fresh iced tea. Something that's there, and quickly gone as she retreats back to her space.

One lone sharp whistle having her duck her head, red cheeked, and a little (lot of) out of her depth, before she claps her hands and looks about the group, looking for her own victim and (wisely) avoiding Frank's dark gaze.

Even though there are still some ML trolls and the patronpatrol/Reen psycho, I have to think on how much worse the trolling used to be for b&g, especially because there used to be so many more ran fans that hadn’t let go yet, and then the Shevine fans who were so horrible to Gwen while Adam was still on The Voice. Sometimes the ML and Shevine fans would even team up on Twitter in their hate fests. I was late to the Shefani party and came along in 2019, and it was still pretty bad even then, when they’d been together 4 years. Now they are about to make 9 years together and they have outlasted so many of those miserable people that were praying for their downfall in the beginning and claiming they were for PR. They got married and continue to thrive and have become more and more open about their family unit with the boys. We are still having fun seeing them release their 6th duet. They looked so amazing and happy in Vegas last night.

I’ve been here since the Halloween 2015 pics, so I feel I’ve seen all the stages, and you are so right. It is much better now. The Gwen and ND fans that hated Blake were also terrible. It’s really amazing they weathered all of that hate. I remember the shock and disbelief of the ran fans when it began to dawn on them that Blake and Gwen really were a thing. ML had just covered Spiderwebs (badly) in public, had called Gwen a total rockstar to the press, and then went on to follow Gwen, only for Gwen to not follow her back. Lololololol. Man, that made them all blow a collective gasket. And our inbox also used to be filled with ND fans who were GR apologists. As bad as the patrolpatrons in many ways because they are literally justifying abusive behavior and wishing Gwen still had a relationship with a horrible person who treated her like dirt.

Oh, and I also remember when Ashley Monroe let it slip that Blake had changed his phone number early on. She was talking about getting a call from an unknown number and it was Blake with a new number. I think it was when they were up for a Grammy together. The ran fans did not like that he changed his number. That was a big explosion of hate also.

Calif: Feds Dismantle 'One Of The Largest' Human Smuggling Rings In U.S., Led By 2 Guatemalan Nationals

Two Guatemalan men were detained by federal officials on Friday on suspicion of running one of the largest human smuggling operations in the United States.

The two were apprehended close to downtown Los Angeles. They are being charged for smuggling at least 20,000 illegal aliens from Guatemala into the United States — since 2019.

Human trafficking and human smuggling differ.

“Human trafficking involves exploiting men, women, or children for the purposes of forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation. Human smuggling involves the provision of a service—typically, transportation or fraudulent documents—to an individual who voluntarily seeks to gain illegal entry into a foreign country,” according to ICE.

A judge ordered both men, Eduardo Domingo Renoj-Matul and Cristobal Mejia-Chaj, to be held without bond when they appeared in federal court a few hours after their arrests. If convicted, they could each face the death penalty.

“These smuggling organizations have no regard for human life and their conduct kills,” stated acting U.S. Attorney Joseph McNally. “The indictment and arrests here have dismantled one of the country’s largest and most dangerous smuggling organizations. This work saves lives, and the members of the organization will now face significant consequences.”

Helmer Obispo-Hernandez, a “lieutenant” in the smuggling ring, and Jose Paxtor-Oxlaj, a man incarcerated in Oklahoma for his involvement in a 2023 automobile accident that killed seven illegals, including five members of the same family, are also charged in the case.

“Every day, similar human smuggling organizations put profits ahead of the safety in these reckless and illegal endeavors,” stated Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Los Angeles Acting Special Agent John Pasciucco. “HSI Los Angeles and our partners are committed to continue identifying and dismantling these organizations, so no further lives are lost, and our borders are secure.”

Renoj-Matul, also known as “Turko,” is accused of being the operation’s ringleader. He was collaborating with other colleagues in Guatemala who had charged travelers between $15,000 and $18,000 to enter the U.S. safely.

After arriving, the migrants were billed once more for further transportation throughout the nation. According to Renoj-Matul’s indictment details, illegals were sent to at least 20 states and Washington, D.C., under his supervision.

At the same Los Angeles neighborhood where Renoj-Matul and Mejia-Chaj were captured, illegals who failed to pay are believed to have been held captive at a stash house — police say.

Prosecutors also claimed that in one instance last year, Renoj-Matul threatened to “bring home in a box” the mother of a migrant he was holding hostage, that is, if her smuggling payments were not paid.

For threatening to chop off the head of a Homeland Security Investigations officer who carried out a search warrant at his residence on Friday, Obispo-Hernandez is still at large and faces further allegations.

“Assistant United States Attorneys Shawn J. Nelson and Elia Herrera of the International Narcotics, Money Laundering, and Racketeering Section are prosecuting this case. Assistant United States Attorney Tara B. Vavere of the Asset Forfeiture and Recovery Section is handling the asset forfeiture portion of this case,” according to the Department of Justice.

Something deep, and refreshing, and nightmareless.

But that had been then, hours earlier, and now she was waking up - sort of. Riding that fine line of asleep and awake that she adored as much as she hated. Sleepy eyes opening a crack to watch as dust danced through streets of morning light. Ears turning out the early morning sounds of the trailer park, and the nature just beyond it, in favor of the sound of her pillow’s quiet breathes, his steady heartbeat. Listening to her favorite sound - the sounds of life - and content to do little else. Content to breathe, and listen to him breathe, and coexist in a moment of peace before the world catches up to them.

It doesn’t take long, however, for the world to become real. For a quiet, utterance, a confession into the early morning silence to slap her in the face. To snag in the slowly turning wheels of her tired mind, and leave her brain stuttering. Sputtering. Her breath catching as she tilts her head up to look at what she can see of him. The line of his jaw, the pursing of his lips, the faint fluttering of his eyelashes as he stares at the ceiling, and gently plays with her loose curls.

“Eddie,” And it pains her to see his eyes close. Clench. His jaw twitch as he prepares for - for what? More accidental cruelty from her, perhaps. Accidental jabs that had never meant to hit him. be seen. It comes from Jane Horrocks, that delirious little bubble and squeak from TELEVISION's Ab Fab in a performance so incredible that at one time she records not only the magic and misery of Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe and Edith Piaf, but likewise their voices.

LV is an useless thing, "a little bird caught in the rafters" of a tumble-down fire-trap, never ever saying a peep, other than to sing as the legends sing, while her monstrous motor-mouth of a mother, Mari (Brenda Blethyn), wails profanities from downstairs.

Just the memories of LV's dear, departed father and scratchy recordings of the world's best-loved voices keep her from freaking.

Oozing onto her perch is Ray State (Michael Caine), a sleazy talent stalker into flash jewellery, sharp vehicles and heavy financial obligation who sees the little sparrow as pounds, shillings and sustenance.

When State draws the unfortunate, shy girl onto the stage with soft, sly words the movie seems destined for backstage cliché, but it spins away when trust is betrayed.

Bits and Pieces   -  Presidential Trivia   8/16/20

A few weeks ago, I had a trivia question pop up in my inbox:  Which presidential election had the highest turnout percentage? The choices were: 1876, 1980, 2008, 2016.

Don’t make the mistake of forgetting changes in voting laws over the centuries. The 2016 had a high number of votes cast (138,847,000+/-), though lower than the percentage of eligible voters performing their duty in 2012 (58% to 2016 at 52%). The winner is 1876, when 82% of the registered voters came out for the choices of Rutherford B. Hayes vs Samuel Tilden.

In 1876 the Civil War Amendment # 15 granting voting rights to all men over 21 regardless of “race, color or previous servitude” had been law for 5 years. Many former Confederate States used the provision in the amendment to institute poll taxes, literacy tests and other “qualifications” for voting. Yet that year 82% of eligible voters cast a ballot in the presidential election.

Here are some other pieces of questions about presidents or their elections that might be interesting?

·         What does the S in Harry S Truman stand for?  Take your pick…Harry’s parents compromised by only giving him a middle initial “S” to represent both his grandfathers: Anderson Shipp Truman and Solomon Young.

·         Did every president live in the White House? Actually John Adams (#2) was the first occupant (supposedly the paint was still wet when he and Abigail moved in, in 1800). Washington began the project and oversaw its construction, beginning in 1792, but never lived there.

·         Was this home always called the White House? The first president to call this residence the White House was Theodore Roosevelt, #26. Originally it was known as the Executive Mansion or Presidents’ House.  

·         Who was the first president born in the United States? Though under the U.S. Constitution a president must be a natural born citizen, the first seven presidents were born in the 13 colonies before the American Revolution. So, technically, the first U.S. born president was Martin Van Buren born in New York in 1782 –born after winning our independence from Great Britain, but before the U.S. Constitution in 1789.

·         How many presidents died in office? There were eight who died as president; four of them were assassinated. Assassinated: Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley and Kennedy; Other: William Henry Harrison, Taylor, Harding and FDR.

·         Did any president ever serve two terms non-consecutively? Yes, Grover Cleveland. Benjamin Harrison served a term between Cleveland’s two terms.

·         Which state has produced the most U.S. presidents? Eight presidents have come from Virginia, but Ohio has given the country seven presidents.

Other little known (and maybe even not cared about) pieces of presidential trivia:

·         The first president to have a Christmas tree in the White House was Franklin Pierce (1853-1857).

·         The first president to campaign by telephone was William McKinley (1901)

·         James Madison was the shortest (5’4”) and lightest (100 lbs.) president.

·         When Millard Fillmore (1850-1853) entered the White House (following the death of Zachary Taylor), the home had no Bible. He and Abigail Fillmore installed the first library. (Now THIS fact I found amazing considering that Thomas Jefferson had the most awesome/largest library at the time of his presidency, and sold the majority of his books (6,000) to the Library of Congress when it lost its collection in the fire during the British burning of DC in the War of 1812.)

·         Thomas Jefferson wrote his own epitaph for his tombstone: “Author of the Declaration of Independence, Author of the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom and Father of the University of Virginia.” He never mentioned his presidency.

·         As Monroe was the lightest, William Taft may have been the heaviest (332 lbs.). The first time he used the White House bathtub, he got stuck. A larger one was ordered!

·         The term “O.K./okay” is credited to Martin Van Buren. He was raised in Kinderhook, New York and gained the nickname “Old Kinderhook.” As he later was called OK Van Buren, this tag transitioned into our vocabulary.

·         The first president born in a hospital was Jimmy Carter.

·         Herbert Hoover (1929-1933) is the president who approved “The Star-Spangled Banner” as our national anthem.

·         The words “one nation under God” were added to the Pledge of Allegiance by President Dwight Eisenhower (1953-1961).

·         In 1872, Ulysses S. Grant was the first president to run for office against a woman candidate. Virginia Woodhull was the candidate under the Equal Rights Party.

·         Andrew Jackson was the only president known to be a prisoner of war. He was also the only president to serve in both the American Revolution and the War of 1812.

·         Dwight Eisenhower was the only president to serve in WWI and WWII.

·         The president with the most children was John Tyler – with 15!

·         Thomas Jefferson was an inventor and is credited with: coat hanger, hideaway bed and dumbwaiter.

·         The longest living president was Jimmy Carter at 94 and 172 days.

Presidential trivia is an interesting way to look at history. Mundane details can bog a person down. My students loved it when I introduced irrelevant pieces of historical trivia. It seemed to lighten the mood and spark a little interest. Must say that the favorite each year was how “hooker” came into our vocabulary. (General Joseph Hooker of the Union, hired women to follow his troops and keep them “motivated.” These women became known as Hooker’s Girls. You can figure out the rest.)

Someone had seen them, and her mother was furious. All Birdie's, well, not meticulous planning of telling them about her - her relationship thrown into the trash can thanks to a sighting by a daughter of a friend of a friend - or something like that. All her secrets now laid bare as her mother fumed and her father sighed like a concerned parent. He was too old, he'd taken her to an adult party with alcohol, he didn't look right. Things that normally came from the lips of parents to their teenage child - not a young woman of twenty years old. Someone naïve but with a good head on her shoulders - someone that knew Connor wasn't that bad of a guy, had experienced his kindness up close and personal as he'd taken her drug ass to his home and relinquished his bed for her.
