What did young parents buy in the Soviet era? 👶🏻
🇬🇧Now on the Russian market you can find all kinds of goods for children, as well as equipment that can help young parents to take care of their child.
But this is now. 30 years ago everything was completely different.
I want to tell you about what the young parents of the Soviet era bought and used for their babies.
Diapers
🇬🇧The first disposable diapers appeared in the 60s in the USA. In the USSR, disposable diapers (Pampers Huggies and Libero) came only in the early 90s, but not all Soviet citizens could afford them. In 1980s - 90s (before Pampers came to us) the USSR factories were producing the disposable diapers. (Photo 1)
Tumblr media
🇬🇧They were rare, so women preferred to sew diapers from a gauze or old bed linen. (Photo 1)
🇬🇧The women's magazines "Rabotnitsa" and "Krestyanka" helped young parents and printed patterns of waterproof panties that could be sewn from any material.
(Photo 3)
🍼 Коля́ски - a baby strollers
🇬🇧Strollers in the USSR began to appear in the 50s and were considered a great luxury (Photo 1). How did people manage without them? They carried children in their arms. In winter parents put children on sleds. In the 70s, strollers appeared in every young family (Photo 2). Soviet strollers were very heavy and uncomfortable. Lucky for those, who were able to get an import stroller, which was considered a rarity.
Tumblr media
🇬🇧In the USSR, they tried to produce a plastic transformer stroller (Photo 3). This stroller was dangerous, as it could roll over with the child, and it also often broke.
🇬🇧In the 1980s, the Liepaja factory began to produce very good baby carriages. The factory produced different types of strollers: for twins and even triplets, as well as strollers for dolls.
Sleds
Tumblr media
🇬🇧Sleds were a great alternative to strollers in winter. They were very popular in the USSR. Sledding was a favorite winter pastime for Soviet children.
Washing board and Soviet washing machine
🇬🇧When children appear in the house, a lot of dirty laundry appears, doesn't it?
Here, washing boards and washing machines came to the aid of Soviet parents.
Tumblr media
🇬🇧There were many brands and modifications of washing machines in the Soviet Union. They were created using foreign technologies.
The first washing machines in the USSR appeared in 1950. (Photo 1)
🇬🇧In the 60s, semi-automatic machines appeared. Some instances of this washing machine survived to the present day. They survived mainly in the homes of pensioners. (Photo 2)
The first automatic washing machine appeared in the USSR at the end of the 70s.
(Photo 3)
🇬🇧And then Western manufacturers came to the market. Despite the variety of washing machines, the Soviet people still used washing boards.

Baby cots
Tumblr media
🇬🇧 In Soviet times, simple but very comfortable baby cots were produced. But many people prefer to make baby cots by themselves.
Baby food.
🇬🇧In the 1950s, the production of baby food began in the USSR: canned juices and purees, dry milk mixtures, porridge and jelly.
Tumblr media
🇬🇧"Malysh" and "Malyutka" are some of the very first dry milk products for children that appeared in Soviet stores.
🇬🇧Milk kitchens were popular in the USSR. There, parents could get bottles of milk and other dairy products for their children for free.
🇬🇧In the 70s, factories that produced baby formula were built. At first, baby formula was sold in glass jars, and then it began to be sold in cardboard bags.
🇬🇧In the 1990s, world children's products appeared in Soviet stores - milk mixtures, yogurt, and cereals. But they were not available to everyone.
Baby's pacifier
🇬🇧Baby's pacifiers were needed for feeding - they were put on bottles with baby formula. They were made from food rubber. They could have an elongated or round shape.

Tips I’ve Learned from Relearning my Second First Language
This is really important, to me, and maybe to you, too.
But first, here’s some background info on me and bilingualism in general:
I grew up speaking Japanese and English and started speaking them as a baby at the same time (simultaneous bilingual). Some of you may have learned one after the other (sequential bilingual).
I grew up speaking Japanese because my grandma mostly raised me, and she’s Japanese. So through her, I learned Japanese. This is my heritage language. Another example, a common heritage language in California (USA) is Spanish, and I have friends who grew up speaking Vietnamese and Tagalog.
By definition (for ease, through Wikipedia), a heritage language is is a minority language (either immigrant or indigenous) learnt by its speakers at home as children, but never fully developed because of insufficient input from the social environment.
People who speak a heritage language range in their skillset: some speakers are more fluent than others, and some can only understand. Some may know how to read and write, but many don’t. Everyone is different.
The past couple months, at 25 years old, I decided I wanted to start trying to learn Japanese again. Before starting to study it more actively, I could understand Japanese pretty easily, minimal ability to speak, read, and write (hiragana was the easiest, followed by katakana and some kanji). When I was younger, I attended Japanese school on Saturdays, which is where I learned to read and write.
I had tried many many many times before to learn Japanese again, but I failed every time.
Here are some things I wish I would have realized earlier:
 1. You can’t rely on passive skills to study if you want to improve your active skills
Passive skills: Listening comprehension, reading Active skills: Speaking, writing
Active skills focus on the production of language. For the longest time I wasn’t improving these skills because I thought that I could improve them by listening to more things in Japanese: TV shows, songs, YouTube videos, listening to my family speak.
But why would that work if I’ve been listening to my grandma speak to me in Japanese for 25 years of my life and I didn’t gain any active skills from that?
In order to gain improve your active skills, you have to practice by using your active skills.
I know, if you don’t speak a heritage language and are reading this, you might think DUH! I learned Portuguese and the only way to get good at speaking it is to speak it. I don’t think I realized this was the case with my Japanese because I already had an “in.” But this still applies. I had to speak and write more in order to be able to, well, speak and write more.
2. You have to try
You grew up speaking another language. It’s a special gift. But if you’re lacking in certain skills, you still have to work to try and strengthen those skills.
A couple years ago, I went back to study at my Japanese school as an adult because I thought it would help. It kind of did, but not really...
I TRICKED MYSELF into thinking I understood all the material because I could understand everything the teacher was saying, when in reality I wasn’t able to retain the kanji or the syntactic structures I was learning.
By tricking myself into THINKING I knew things, I sabotaged my own learning experience.
You have to try, and you have to really want to learn it because already knowing parts of the language have the potential to hold you back.
3. Use what gave you the language to your advantage
Don’t “use” them, but you know what I mean.
For the longest time (childhood into recent adulthood), I was too embarrassed to use Japanese with my mom and grandma. I would only routinely use a select amount of phrases that I felt comfortable using, even if my grandma was speaking to me in Japanese.
My mom would always say “You have the best resources around you, practice your Japanese while you can.”
And while sometimes what parents say can be annoying, my mom was right.
But it took a HUGE change in my life to realize this and take action.
When I was 23, my grandma went back to live in Japan. It was an emotional and difficult time for me because I was so used to having her around. While she was living with my family, we learned to communicate in a mix of Japanese-English, and I expressed my gratitude for her by doing housework for her, or buying her things at the grocery store or brought her desserts after going out to eat with friends.
But her moving across the world meant that I couldn’t do these things anymore. A couple days before her departure, I decided that I would try and write her a letter in Japanese and slip it in her backpack for when she arrived in Japan.
Let me tell you, I had THE MOST difficult time writing that letter. I couldn’t express how much appreciated her because my Japanese sucked. And I hated that I couldn’t tell her that in her own language.
So after she moved to Japan, I started to write her letters--*practicing those active skills though!!!
By being able to write letters with my grandma, not only was I practicing my Japanese, but I was creating a relationship with my grandma that I had never had before. I knew that I would regret it if I didn’t talk to her more before she’s gone. Which is sad, but it’s reality.
And let me tell you. I’ve improved a lot.
I can think in Japanese now. It may not be perfect, but I know how to structure my sentences. Words are coming more easily to my brain now. I can communicate with my grandma.
4. It’s never too late
I considered late high school/early college the prime of my language learning career. I got myself to a decent level of Spanish, I learned Portuguese, I took classes in Mandarin and French.
But for some reason, I thought my Japanese was always DOOMED because it was just way. too. hard. for. me. to. learn.
Japanese is hard. But it’s not impossible.
I realized that at 25. It’s never too late to learn a language, but it’s also never too late to try and relearn a language you were familiar with before.
Just take it one step at a time.
I always thought Japanese was overwhelming because I KNEW how difficult it was. I thought about everything--kanji, onyomi and kunyomi, all the sentence structures and everything all at once. This freaked me out and made me think I could never learn it.
But if you learn it little by little, it’s not as overwhelming.
That’s pretty much all the major points of things I wish I realized earlier when it came to studying Japanese.
Language is something I’ve been interested in for a long time in terms of academics, so Japanese is naturally, important to me as a language. For other heritage language speakers, it might be more of the food that’s important, or cultural aspects, or other parts of their heritage that is important.
Everyone is different.
But this was for you, heritage language speaker, if you needed a little push.

WELCOME TO TOMORROW:
It's already here! Heck, some it’s been here for a while now...
If you think the virus is going to make changes read this!  Many of us won’t see the changes, but our kids and grandkids probably will.
Basic auto repair shops will disappear.
A gas/diesel engine has 20,000 individual parts.
An electrical motor has only 20 parts.
Electric cars are sold with lifetime guarantees and are repaired only by dealers.
It takes only 10 minutes to remove and replace an electric motor.
Faulty electric motors are not repaired in the dealership but are sent to a regional repair shop that repairs them with robots.
Your electric motor malfunction light goes on, so you drive up to what looks like a car wash, and your car is towed through while you have a cup of coffee and out comes your car with a new electric motor!
Gas pumps will go away.
Street corners will have meters that dispense electricity.Companies will install electrical recharging stations; in fact, they’ve already started in the developed world.
Smart major auto manufacturers have already designated money to start building new plants that build only electric cars.
Gasoline/oil companies will go away.
Drilling for oil will stop.  Say goodbye to OPEC!  The middle east is in trouble.
Homes will produce and store more electrical energy during the day and than they use, and will sell it back to the grid.
The grid stores the surplus and dispense it to industries that are high electricity users. Has anybody seen the Tesla roof?
A baby of today will see personal cars only in museums.
In 1998, Kodak had 170,000 employees and sold 85% of all photo paper worldwide.
Within just a few years, their business model disappeared and they went bankrupt.
Did you think in 1998 that 3 years later you'd NEVER take pictures on film again?  With today’s smartphones, who even has a camera these days?
Digital cameras were invented in 1975. The first ones only had 10,000 pixels, but followed Moore's law – that technological capacity will DOUBLE every year. So as with all exponential technologies, it was a disappointment for a time, before it became 'way superior and became mainstream in only a few short years.
What happened to Kodak and Polaroid will happen in a lot of industries in the next 5-10 years ....(but much faster) with Artificial Intelligence (AI), health, autonomous and electric cars, education, 3D printing, agriculture and jobs.
Software has disrupted and will continue to disrupt most traditional industries
UBER is just a software tool, they don't own any cars, and are now the biggest taxi company in the world!  Ask any taxi driver if they saw that coming.
Airbnb is now the biggest hotel company in the world, although they don't own any properties.  Ask Hilton Hotels if they saw that coming.
Artificial Intelligence:
Computers become exponentially better in understanding the world.
This year, a computer beat the best Go player in the world, 10 years earlier than expected.
In the USA, young lawyers already don't get jobs. Because of computers, you can get legal advice (so far for right now, the basic stuff) within seconds, with 90% accuracy – compared with 70% accuracy when done by humans.  So, if you study law, stop immediately. There will be 90% fewer lawyers in the future, (what a thought!) only omniscient specialists will remain.
Computer programs already help nurses diagnosing cancer, and the programs are 4 times more accurate than human nurses.
Facebook now has a pattern recognition software that can recognize faces better than humans.
In 2030, computers will become more intelligent than humans.
Autonomous cars:
In 2018 the first self-driving cars were already here.
In the next 2 years, the entire industry will start to be disrupted.
You won’t WANT to own a car anymore as you will call a car with your phone, it will show up at your location and drive you to your destination
You will not need to park it.  You will pay only for the driven distance and you can be productive while driving  The very young children of today will never get a driver's license and will never own a car
This will change our cities because we will need 90-95% fewer cars. We can transform former parking lots into green parks.
About 1.2 million people die each year in car accidents worldwide including distracted or drunk driving. We now have one accident every 60,000 miles.  With autonomous driving that will drop to 1 accident in 6 million miles. That will save more than a million lives worldwide each year.
Some traditional car companies will doubtless become bankrupt.  They will try the evolutionary approach and just build a better car, while tech companies (Tesla, Apple, Google) will do the revolutionary approach and build a computer on wheels.Look at what Volvo is doing right now; no more internal combustion engines in their vehicles starting with the 2019 models using all-electric or hybrid only, with the intent of phasing out the hybrid models.
Many engineers from Volkswagen and Audi are completely terrified of Tesla – and they should be.  Look at all the companies offering all-electric vehicles. That was unheard of only a few years ago.
Insurance companies will have massive trouble because, without accidents, the costs will become cheaper.  Their auto insurance business model will disappear. (But notice some now offer data/identity protection along with home and life... )
Real estate will change.  If you can work from home (or from literally anywhere), people will abandon their towers to move far away to more beautiful affordable locations...
Electric cars will become mainstream about 2030.  Cities will be less noisy because all new cars will run on electricity.
Cities will have much cleaner air as well.
Electricity will become incredibly cheap and clean.
Solar production has been on an exponential curve for 30 years, but you can now see the burgeoning impact.  And it’s just getting ramped up.
Fossil energy companies are desperately trying to limit access to the grid to prevent competition from home solar installations, but that simply cannot continue - technology will take care of that strategy.
Health:
The "Tricorder X" (called the Tricorder from Star Trek) that works with your phone – taking your retina scan, your blood sample, and you breathe into it.
It analyses 54 bio-markers that will identify nearly any disease.
There are dozens of phone apps out right now for health.
Welcome to the 4th Industrial Revolution.

5 SAFETY RULES TO AVOID UNINTENTIONAL INJURIES
By having a look at the environment, activities, and threats of your family, many unintentional accidents and emergencies can be avoided. It’s important to identify issues early and respond quickly. This will help maintain manageable conditions and avoid them from being an accident. 63 percent of all deaths in 2010 accounted for five potentially preventable causes of death; over 38 percent were linked to unintentional injuries. These could have been prevented if proper safety standards with furniture wall straps had been followed. Whether it’s from sickness, elderly, or unintended injuries, death is an unavoidable aspect of existence. Over the past few decades, accidental injuries have killed more children than any other cause and account for around 40 percent of all deaths among children and young people.
Prevention is the key to reducing the death rate from unintentional injury: being prepared with the necessary equipment, avoiding hazard exposure and providing adequate surveillance and supervision to prevent incidents in the first place.
SAFE YOUR HOME FIRST
You’ll start with your home. Unfortunately, the place where incidents are most likely to occur is your home. In order for incidents to be prevented, everyone should be conscious of the hazards at home. Keeping safety at home is something that cannot be achieved by a single individual, but requires everyone’s involvement. In order to ensure that the home is a safe place for all members, there are different aspects that need to be examined. One of the reasons that people adopt some methods and techniques that do not help make home a safe place is a lack of quality knowledge on what is needed to achieve safety at home. When unsecured furniture falls or tips over, most accidents occur. A child pulls the furniture on itself many times.
SECURE YOUR FURNITURE FROM FALLING
The biggest risk from furniture inside a home by far is from tip-overs of furniture. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, anywhere from 22,700 to 31,400 people are injured by falling furniture each year, and most of them are children. Ensure that your home and furniture are fully equipped with anti-tip furniture wall straps and locks. Spills, excursions, and falls are the second largest single cause of home injuries. These types of injuries and accidents are often related to unsafe environments in the home, work, and community.
ANTI-TIP FURNITURE STRAPS
Furniture straps are designed to shield children and pets from furniture tossing. First, furniture anchors for baby security proofing. The furniture wall anchor will prevent tipping over furniture. The furniture anchors consist of improved material, which gives the furniture anchors greater rigidity and strength. The anchor for furniture is suitable for anchoring the stand, cabinet, bookcase, dresser, wardrobe. When engaged, the safety strap provides a positive and reliable lock and easily slips off with a release press, so you can clean or move your furniture easily and safely when needed.
SECURE BOOKCASES AND BOOKSHELVES
While tip-overs from living rooms are more common in younger children, in older children and teens, falling bookcases have caused injuries. To avoid overloading bookcase shelves, it helps to be careful. Most common furniture including dressers, bookcases, mirrors, and other large pieces of furniture should be secured to the wall using anti-tip furniture wall straps. To avoid tipping, shift heavy articles to low shelves or drawers. Using safety straps, L-brackets, or other protective attachment devices, connect large furniture such as dressers and bookshelves to the wall. To keep it from falling over, it also helps to attach the top portion of a bookcase to the wall. Pay attention to the manufacturer’s instructions for locking the two parts together when shelving is affixed to a desk or cabinet. As an additional safety measure, connect the top piece to the wall, especially when there are children in the home.
BE CAREFUL WHILE USING FLAT SCREEN TVS
Whenever possible, place flat screen TVs on the wall. Be sure to use a stand built to be used as a TV stand if you’re using a TV stand. Choose one that is the correct size to hold the TV size and model you have. With safety straps, attach the TV to the stand and then secure the stand with safety straps or L-brackets to the wall. If you have an older TV, avoid putting the TV on top of the dresser if you want to continue using it, as they are not built to support the weight of a TV. Put it on a stand designed for this form of TV instead. Make sure the TV is secured to the stand and the stand is secured with anti-tip furniture straps to the wall. To keep them from toppling off stands, place flat-screen TVs on the wall. To guarantee that you have a safe fit, obey the instructions of the manufacturer. Make sure that all the televisions in your home are comfortably fixed on the wall or a piece of furniture, not just the one(s) you use most frequently. Place the TV on a low, large base and drive it as far as possible back to its base.
OTHER SAFETY MEASURES TO AVOID UNINTENTIONAL INJURIES
When engaged, the safety strap provides a positive and reliable lock and easily slips off with a release press, so you can clean or move your furniture easily and safely when needed. Do not store children’s attractive things, such as toys or remote controls, on top of a TV set, bookshelf or any other high surface of furniture. To get them, a child might try to climb to the top. Prevent kids by adding stops from dragging drawers more than two-thirds of the way out. Pulled-out drawers can move a large dresser’s weight and cause it to fall over. Kids should never be advised to climb in, stand inside, or hang on drawers, doors, or shelves. When purchasing furniture, look for well-made cabinets or chests. Without sticking, drawers can open and close smoothly. Pulling on a jammed drawer may also cause the toppling of chests, dressers or cabinets.
