The City okay so this one is so gently melancholy and yet so very soothing??? how?? to whomst did they sell their sould to produce such delicately balanced music?? i MUST know. i probably won't ever know. regardless i'm spending the next 75 years listening to it and trying to FIGURE IT OUT

Detriot: Become Human ok so I'm lumping all these in together to try and avoid it getting long as all hell but it's inevitable so whatever The Garden is SUCH a lovely theme, I adore it. I hear some similarity - not much but enough for my tiny mind - to Connor and Hank, which is so so interesting bc Hank and Amanda (the occupant of the titular garden) are Connor's closest in-game connections, and the musical connection compares and parallels them in a way that makes me just want tO [flips table] I'm never going to be over Kara's music, I love it so much. it's so evocative of her - not that markus' and connor's aren't, but they aren't in the same way. Run With Me is one of my absolute favourites for its blending with Connor's theme to set the tone for the chapter (and if you haven't heard the extended in-game mix then PLEASE listen. it's seven minutes of tension and, if you listen VERY carefully, me screaming loudly in the backgroun). Song of the Lost Girl and its distortion of the Kara/Alice theme has my WHOLE ENTIRE HEART. I don't know about you but I feel the snow on my skin when I hear it. I'm shivering RIGHT NOW sigh Zlatko is awful in that it is so so good. It's exactly as terrifying as it's supposed to be. the CLOCK NOISES send me off the rails EVERY TIME. must say my preference is for the in-game mix that ends with kara's/alice's theme bc... that last minute...I can see them, and I can hear Kara's words and i just SCREAMS Can We Still Trust Our Machines is incredible. The music never makes it sounds like anything but what it is: the chase is life and death for Rupert. and for Connor, depending on how back you fuck up your qtes but hey who hasn't been eaten by a combine harvester once or twice Hostage is some of the BEST SCENE SETTING MUSIC EVER. I was excited to play the game and then the music started with Connor in the elevator and let me tell ya the world SHOOK. so understated while collecting evidence! the gentle rise! the gradual build! the notes fade into and out of the fore! I LOVE IT SO MUCH. the extended mixed add some fantastic elements here too, especially around the conversation with Daniel, and I love it SO MUCH I could kiss Nima directly on his FACE. thank you SO MUCH for this, I need to go and lie face down for the rest of eternity, LED stuck on amber, system reset may be required etc etc

Light of the Seven - Game of Thrones

I’ll be honest, I never watched GoT. But this track has my heart in a chokehold. It tells a full story in the course of 10 minutes, and it never fails to leave me with chills down my spine. 

The calm piano section at the beginning and the subtle cello enters so sneakily, creating a wonderful ambiance ??? So distinguished. It introduces the main theme that’s going to be addressed a lot throughout the track, and it’s just so beautiful. The voices that enter at 04.44 ??? Instant goosebumps. It’s so ethereal, so mystical, it pokes at your curiosity and primal instincts of fear, and then the seriousness hits you at 05.22 with the passionate cello section being added to the voices, it’s so SHJDSNCS the way it builds up and builds up until the beautiful, gorgeous climax at 08.37 SHJCBJDCSKCD *clutches heart*

Barok van Zieks: Grim Reaper of the Great Court - The Great Ace Attorney

Likewise, I sadly haven’t played this game of the franchise yet but when it comes to music, Ace Attorney. never. disappoints.

The sinister aura of this track lures and seduces you the moment you start listening, the beauty of the HARPSICHORD and the STRINGS and the PERCUSSION and the TENSION it’s so aahsndcsj like !!! I literally can’t get enough. I have, like, a hundred Ace Attorney tracks that I want to put here, it’s so *screams*

The City (oneiric version) - Nihilumbra

Nihilumbra is a really nostalgic game for me which focuses on a character’s journey to find himself while trying to escape from the inevitable curse that he was born into and never giving up even though there is a constant voice that keeps demoralising him. That’s why his journey reminds me of Connor’s, just a bit :’) . 

This track is just so soothing. I’ve always loved the combination of piano and harp, and when the church organ enters to reinforce the ominous tension, it’s a sudden eargasm to me.

We’ve already yelled about Run With Me so I’ll pass that even though it’s still my favourite track. 

The Garden

I always start crying while listening to this, I still haven’t gotten used to the feels and dense nostalgia that the beginning gives me. It’s so overwhelming, so tense yet so soothing and ethereal at the same time, I’m just *sobs* I also adore the ambience videos made with this, inspired by the Zen Garden scenes ahh. That visual and auditory aesthetic is slowly becoming my comfort place.

Song of the Lost Girl 

There are NO WORDS ENOUGH to tell how much I’m in LOVE with Kara’s and Alice’s music. Like oh my GOD the cello, the synthetiser, the piano, the authenticity and passion of the beautiful melodies. Their tragedy fills my veins, I feel their souls crying for help through the cello solos, I’m literally /this/ close to breaking down and sobbing.

OH MY GOD this one. With the chorus in the background, and the passionate strings section, one has no choice but to tear up before this ethereal music. Like I had said, I totally adore the usage of chorus in Markus’ music. I also love alllllll the music that comes forward during his revolution path, it pumps me up so much like YES KING. TAKE YOUR REVENGE ON ME AND MY PEOPLE <3 KILL US PLEASE <3

I also have to yell about this one because Predator!Connor is SOOOO *swoons* GOD I love his chase scenes and how the music always has you on your toes. And when the melody progresses at 01.22 it’s just pure ecstasy, I ADORE how mechanical and on beat the whole thing is, he’s just a lifeless rabid dog chasing after his prey and the music is so SHJANCS.

The Hostage

I fell into the Connor hole again, I CAN’T HELP IT. I /love/ how the game slaps you across the face with this gorgeous introductory chapter and an even more gorgeous soundtrack. I adore how the music starts picking up with every evidence you lick collect and it becomes more and more intense with every variation, I’m so JKDKSDN so normal about it all. Like the cellos that start making themselves heard at 01.40 have my goddamn heart, and the electronic keyboard thing that enters at 02.24 is so SO BEAUTIFUL LIKE ??? BOY you’re not even alive. you don’t have the right to make me fall in love with your goddamn theme ??? how does that work ???

8. Conger Rosenborg Castle

The English translation of the name for this little hamlet is New Harbor. Although the name might try to convince you otherwise, this little port village is quite old with tons of history. While in the past, the area was considered to be hit or miss thanks to the bodacious sailors who used to frequent the bars. Today the area has been restored and is now the most popular tourist attraction in Copenhagen. Of course, after checking off all nine of the other attractions we have discussed so far, you must be exhausted. Luckily, Copenhagen is home to some of the world's most famous hot saunas. Scandinavian culture places a lot more value on saunas than most other Western nations. There are plenty of different places that you can choose from within the city limits, but Copenhot is probably the one worth checking out the most. This is not actually located in one place but on top of a boat that cruises through the canals. Pipeline Documentation - Reflection

Onwards, onwards to the fun stuff now. 

So, I’m pretty sure it’s super obvious which of the options I’m going to pick for assessment two. It’s me. 

I’m going with the Visual Effects stream with the ‘Focus on integrating an animated 2D character and effects with a real-time environment (Unreal Engine 4) through post-production compositing, real-time compositing, or other methods. Demonstrate the process, layers and effects used.’ option because YES 2D this is my jam.

Insofar as an inspirational studio/artist goes, my main holy grail of animation goals right now is Chromosphere and  Kevin Dart’s work, and conveniently, they both involve a level of 2D-3D integration that’s just perfect for this unit. 

The best example of this is the making of their film June found here where they integrate 2D animation with 3D backgrounds and objects -- cars, the main character June and numerous backgrouns are all 3D with highly stylised textures and rendering techniques while many background and side characters and objects are animated in 2D and added in post production to create a seamless effect.

(unfortunately I can’t link directly to the video from the article, but it’s about halfway down under the quote “But it was amazing to see how well the technique could work even with a 3D character interacting directly with 2D characters, like in this scene:”)

The whole film can be found here and is one of the most beautiful things I’ve watched in ages. 

Obviously that’s just a bit out of my league for a six week solo assignment, but it’s definitely my end goal. James Giliard’s advertisements for Ikea are in a similar style, but entirely in 2D, and I’d like to try and emulate his 2D character style against a stylised 3D background

(his lighting is gorgeous, and is something I really really want to nail down for this assignment)

So, what I think I’m going to need for Assignment two, at least skill wise (I already know I’m going to need to mainline the coffee)

 - 2D character animation

- 3D background animation (not advanced, but above greybox level)

- UV unwrapping (simple) and stylised texturing

- Stylised rendering techniques

- Stylised lighting

- Compositing in After Effects to make the whole thing cohesive.

- Goddamn time management skills

Skillwise, I know I’m definitely capable of animating in 2D, and even After Effects, and I know I can do the stylised texturing as it’s going to be using the same skillset. Depending on how simple I can keep the background elements, uv unwrapping also shouldn’t be too much of an issue, leaving the good lighting and rendering part to be practiced and researched. I’m more worried about lighting than I am rendering -- so far I don’t have the knack of creating good atmospheric lighting effects.

Compositing is also going to be something I need to work hard on improving, especially in the line of making it all look like a cohesive whole. That’s probably going to be the bit I struggle most at -- everything 3D related looks to have *ample* tutorials and instructive resources available but the cohesive part relies just as much on one’s ‘eye’ as it does technical skill. 

(insofar as that old enemy of mine goes, time management, I’m just going to have to be meticulous as to what’s been done and what needs to be done when. I’m already setting up a spreadsheet with asset lists/dates things need to be done and in what priority. Hopefully it will help this time!)

As far as initial resources go, for the 2D side of it, I’m definitely going to start with some of Jake Bartlett’s tutorials on Skillshare. I’ve used them in the past, and they’ll definitely help me get back into that process.

3D wise, just a few minutes googling ‘cel shading unreal’ has thrown up a bunch of really cool videos that are already making that part feel more exciting -- some examples of:

Compositing wise, this looks like an interesting way to get stuff coming out of UE4 at least half way there

(I don’t know if it’s even remotely applicable for what I want to do, but it sure looks interesting)

Again, even just a minute of googling throws up a myriad of excellent tutorials for putting it all together in After Effects, and that’s before I go digging on Lynda for the good stuff. 

More googling throws up Hybrid Animation as a term I should be looking for -- this is probably a hell of a lot closer to what I can achieve, and it really showcases how the 2D/3D thing can look great.
