I think about the change for Backslide constantly.

Tyler going from muttering "I don't wanna-" and into that fading whisper, almost ashamed, of "backslide" in the studio recording-

To the gutteral SCREAM of "I DON'T WANNA-" in the live shows. Full of ANGER. I love it.

The shift from being ashamed, almost afraid-

To being angry. Not WANTING this. Wanting better. To do better. Being angry that it does happen, sometimes- even if we know it's okay, it's frustrating.

And Tyler invokes that PERFECTLY with this switch in the concerts.

Backslide is really feeling like “fuck I feel myself getting more and more depressed, I don’t want to be depressed again, what if it gets as bad as it was that one time? I can’t pull myself out of that again, I don’t think I’m strong enough to go through it again. I wish someone else would notice and help, but I don’t want to be a burden and ask for help, because I don’t even really know how I need help. I don’t know. All I know is this can’t keep happening. Fuck.”
