Throwback Ska Thursday: The ‘97 booking of The Skatalites in downtown Bakersfield was exciting and truly bizarre. The band’s Winnebago rolled up and out walked original members: bassist Lloyd Brevett, saxophonist Roland Alphonso, drummer Lloyd Knibb, and singer Doreen Schaffer and the rest of the band to the stage for a quick line check. The band launched into “Freedom Sounds” and it was on for ska fans and curious Bako attendees who had no idea who they were. Legends! THEE SKATALITES 🇯🇲 ! Band was tight, Lloyd Brevett blew out the @madcaddiesofficial bass cabinet and Lloyd Knibb was mad at Cesareo’s drum kit 🤷🏻‍♂️. What a night it was.... The band hung out afterwards for autographs and chats. I hooked up Roland Alphonso with some Chinese food at Wing Wah (extra shrimp) and off they went to the next show far away from home. Still have the signed vinyl from that night (swipe left). Both Mad Caddies and Mento Buru released our debut albums this year. Playing for the homies on lockdown at Shafter prison in 2015. We’ve played for inmates around Kern County over the years. During a gig at Taft Correctional, we even met a conguero who played with Poncho Sanchez and a friend of Tommy Chong (Tommy was briefly held in Taft. Look it up.) Our idols @the_untouchables_official rolled through Bakersfield twice - twice during the “Decade Of Dance” live album line-up era. An early Tim Gardea (Spilt Milk Prod.) show. John Bryan’s Tavern is now a @flameandskewers restaurant. Back in the day, every cool local band and touring band played here on college music nights. One night it would be Cadillac Tramps, Xtra Large (with Warren from the Vandals,) then 70s legends Rare Earth, reggae with Eek-A-Mouse, Big Mountain, even Deftones and more. We were a house band for awhile. Helped expand our repertoire. Who remembers Toe’s Tavern - Santa Barbara’s best live music dive? Located on State St. it was a college student’s best friend and Mento Buru’s entry into the SB college music scene. They had “Big Wednesday” where you could $10, get a plastic cup for cheap beer refills and as much pizza you could stuff yourself with. Packed to capacity. The coolest bands rolled through: No Doubt, Ozomatli, Sublime, Rice & Beans, Snot, Skankin’ Pickle, and of course the locals Crucial DBC and our ska homies The Upbeat who we played our first Fiesta Days with! We would roll in for a full weekend of Fiesta Day shows at clubs like Toe’s, Soho, De La Guerra Plaza, UCSB frat houses and anybody who would let us play in their backyard.
