It is said that the Rajgad Trek is one of the most picturesque trekking routes in Maharashtra. It begins at Gunjavane Village in the Pune district and ends at the fort, which is 1400m above sea level. This trek offers stunning panoramas of the Sahyadri Mountains. How To Reach Rajgad?

Rajgad is located inside the Sahyadri mountain range, approximately 60 kilometers from Pune. The fort is situated on the crest of a mountain at an elevation of 1,400 meters (4,593 feet). It is possible to reach by taxi, bus, or personal vehicle. The most popular trail towards the fort starts from Gunjavane village.

Public Transport:

From Mumbai, one can take a bus/train to Pune. From the Swargate Pune bus stand, many buses leave for Gunjavane village; you can board the bus and reach the base village in 2-2.5 hours.

Private Transport:

Trekking driving from Mumbai can take the Mumba-Pune Expressway and reach Kothrud; from there, go towards Nasrapur taking the road towards Margasani, approximately 7 kms from Gunjavane village.

The distance is around 202 kms and will take 4-5 hours to reach.

The trek begins from Gunjavane village and finishes at the Rajgad Fort, which is more than 1400m above sea level. This trek is ideal for those who are beginners & intermediates.

The trekkers have the option of choosing from two distinct routes. The first one (the most accessible) starts at Pali village and takes you through a muddy field. From there, the hike takes you through wildflowers and forests.

The most popular route starts in Gunjavane village and goes towards the Chor Darwaza.

The trek distance is about 5 kms one way and can take around 3-3.5 hours to reach the top of the fort.We recommend this trek in 2 days and camping overnight at the fort and enjoying the night sky.

The hike from this route is challenging, but it is rewarding. When you are at the summit, you’ll be able to observe the fort and the natural vegetation surrounding it. If you’re in the mood to do so, you could hike down and return the next day. If you start with a good breakfast, you’ll have the entire time to discover the region.

The trail is well laid out from the base village, and the chances of getting lost are significantly less. After 30-40 mins, you will reach the plateau, where you can get a clear view of the Rajgad fort. This section is mostly a wide and muddy trail.

From the plateau, you start a gradual ascent toward the fort. The distance is around 2-2.5 kms, and once you reach the top, it will take you to the entrance of the Chor Darwaza. This patch will take around 2.5 hours to reach as the entire stretch is a gradual climb to the entrance of the Chor Darwaza. Rajgad Fort Details

The fort is divided into four significant sections: Padmavati Machi, Suvela Machi, Sanjeevani Machi, and Balekilla (the highest point of the fort).

It will take the remaining part of your day to explore the entire top of the fort; hence, camp overnight at the fort, Padmavati Machi being the best location to camp.

Padmavati Machi: This part of the fort was the military/residential area. There is a temple, a garrison & a lake here.

Suvela Machi: The most picturesque part of the fort, Suvela Machi, is a long, narrow strip from which you can get amazing views of the surrounding regions. There is also a Nedhe (naturally formed hole in the wall).

Ballekilla: This is a small fort on top of the fort and the highest point. The entrance to this fort is called Mahadarwaza. From Ballekilla, you can get stunning views of the Torna, Tung, Sinhagad, and many other forts in the region.

Sanjeevani Machi: It is 2.5 km long and has a double-fortified wall & an architectural marvel.

I did this trek in the last month i.e July 2018 monsoon season, but the memories are still so fresh. The height of this fort from sea level is 2710 feet and it offers an amazing view of the Sahyadri mountains. ⛰Rajmachi Fort is a popular destination for nature lovers, trekkers and for outdoor campers. In rainy season from mid-June to mid-October, this region is all the more beautiful with clouds, silvery water falls, streams, lush green forests and meadows. Local families at Udhewadi on Fort Rajmachi welcome trekkers and nature lovers. The local families provide food and camping accommodation to the tourists. The tourism has enabled the local community to give up traditional occupations like agriculture and cattle rearing. Historically, Rajmachi fort was a strategic fort to control Borghat (the Ghat between Khopoli and Khandala on Mumbai-Pune route) which was a historical trade route. It was in the possession of Angre family, the head of Maratha navy in the 18th century. Rajmachi Fort (Killa) consists of two twin fortresses Shriwardhan Ballekilla and Manaranjan Balekilla, with a wide Machi (plateau) surrounding the two Balekillas. There are historical water reservoirs and ruins of fortifications, ramparts, gateways on both the Ballekillas. A view from top of the Forts, of the surrounding hills and vallies is quite mesmorizing. A Shiv Mandir built in Hemdapanti style of arcitecture, approximately in the 8th century AD, on the west end of a big historical water reservoir is worth visiting. Trekking Trip

Raus aus der wuselnden Stadt, weg von dem Lärm, weg vom Dreck und der ständigen Überreizung der Sinne. Ich machte mich auf zu meinem ersten trekking Ausflug in Indien! Ein Lehrer aus meiner Schule, Elvis hat mich eingeladen ihn und seine trekking Freunde dieses Wochenende zu begleiten, er sagte zwar es wäre eine schwierige Tour, aber das wollte ich mir auf keinen Fall entgehen lassen! Am Freitag Abend, 20:00 Uhr trafen wir uns am Bahnhof und fuhren ca. eineinhalb Stunden mit dem Zug. Angekommen in einem Vorort Mumbais assen wir zu Abend und suchten unseren Bus der uns bis zum Pimpalgaon Joga Dam bringen sollte. Meine Crew bestand aus Dylan, er hatte alles geplant und unternimmt öfter trekking Touren, Jeanelle und Nikita, zwei Freundinnen die auch schon öfter dabei waren, Prakash der auf jeden Fall den kleinsten Rucksack dabei hatte, Joyner die ihren ersten trekking Trip mit uns erlebte, Elvis und mir. Ich war sehr gespannt und konnte es kaum noch erwarten. Komisch war es wieder geschlossene Schuhe zu tragen und die drückten auch an Stellen wo sie noch nie gedrückt hatten. Nichtsdestotrotz saßen wir dann alle im Bus und versuchten ein wenig zu schlafen, ca. 01:57 Uhr mitten in der Nacht hielt der Bus und ließ uns irgendwo im Nirgendwo auf dem Highway im Dunkeln zurück. Dylan und Elvis wussten auch nicht wirklich wo wir waren, wir holten zunächst erstmal unsere Taschenlampen raus, da es die Nächte ohne Mond waren und nach so etwas wie Straßenlaternen kann man hier lange suchen. Wir liefen dann natürlich erstmal in die falsche Richtung, entlang des Highway, wo und hupende und grell leuchtende Laster entgegen kamen. Erstaunlicherweise konnten wir allerdings trotzdem um 02:10 Uhr immer noch Leute nach dem Weg fragen und so gingen wir dann ca. 20 Minuten wieder in die Richtung aus der wir gekommen waren. Ich wusste ja gar nichts von irgendeinem Plan, weswegen ich nur im Taschenrampenlicht mitgehen konnte. Eine Stunde liefen wir dann noch unterm Sternenhimmel am Damm entlang, bis wir zu einem kleinen Dorf kamen, das direkt vor dem Berg lag den wir besteigen wollten. Wir breiteten unsere Schlafsäcke unter dem Vordach eines kleinen Imbisses aus und schliefen für vier Stunden. Gefroren habe ich schon sehr, doch der Sonnenaufgang um 7:00 Uhr hat alles wieder entschädigt auch die harte Nacht auf dem Boden. Zum Frühstück bekamen wir Omeletts mit Chapati und Chai, währenddessen die Farmer die Kühe und Ziegen über die Straßen trieben und die Frauen Wasserkrüge auf den Köpfen in ihre Häuser trugen. Dann ging es endlich für uns los. Es war ein wunderschöner Aufstieg mit verwinkelten Pfaden, steilen Felswegen zum klettern und langen Ebenen wo wir immer ein wenig mehr Aussicht genießen konnten. Was mir natürlich auch auffallen musste war leider der Müll der fast überall am Wegrand lag, Plastikverpackungen von Keksen und Flaschen. Elvis und Dylan erzählten mir das es durchaus noch schlimmer aussehende Wanderwege gibt die von den städtischen Touristen verschmutzt werden. Die Bewohner und Einheimischen der Regionen sorgen nämlich sehr gut für ihr Land, der Müll wird von denen verursacht die nur ein zwei Tage dort verweilen. Auf dem Weg nach Oben bot uns auch ca. aller 15 Minuten eine Frau oder einen Mann aus dem Dorf Lemon Juice, Lassi und kleine Snacks an. Zuerst dachte ich gleich wieder auf keinen Fall dieses Wasser trinken, wer weiß was da drin ist, doch der überzeugte Widerstand fehlte mir dann doch und so trank ich mehrere Gläser von dem leicht salzigen Saft (ja das kling merkwürdig aber die mixen da wirklich Salz rein!). Die Region, der Berg und der Aussichtspunk wo wir waren heißt übrigens Harishchandragad und bietet auf jeden Fall mehr als das was wir an diesen zwei Tagen gesehen haben und ich denke ich werde dort vielleicht nochmal einen Ausflug hin unternehmen! Zur Mittagszeit kamen wir dann am Balekilla of Harishchandragad an, einer kleinen Tempelstätte wo es auch Hütten zum Übernachten und Essen gab. Wir bekamen herrliches Essen und ruhten uns ein wenig aus von dem Anstieg. Wir sahen uns dem Tempel an, der auch eine Badestelle beinhaltete, die mit eiskalten, etwas dreckigen aber immerhin heiligen Wasser gefüllt war. Eigentlich schrieen alle meine Sinne 'rein da', doch Dylan sagte wir hätte keine Zeit dafür. Wir machten uns also auf und liefen noch ein Stück in der warmen Nachmittagssonne und kamen dann an dem schönsten Platz der Reise an. Dort wimmelte es von anderen kleinen Reisegruppen und auch dort gab es eine Hütte, wo Essen für alle drei Mahlzeiten des Tages angeboten wurde, sowie Zelte vermiete wurden. Ich war begeistert. Diese Aussicht in die Tiefe und die Weite. Eine wunderschöne blühende Natur mit vielen kleinen gelben Blumen umgab uns und einen Schritt weiter ein gigantischer Abgrund mit einer atemberaubenden Klippe. Den Rest des Tages verbrachten wir damit die Aussicht zu genießen, zwei Zelte aufzubauen den Sonnenuntergang zu betrachten und anschließend zu Abend zu essen. Auf das Essen und meinen Bach habe ich dann einfach vertraut und ich muss sagen danach habe ich auch keine Unverträglichkeit gespürt. Wir ließen den Tag an einem kleinen Lagerfeuer ausklingen, wo Dylan uns sogar noch mit einen kleinen Schokoladenkuchen überraschte da Nikita letzte Woche Geburtstag hatte. Also was will man eigentlich noch mehr, Sonnenuntergang, Freiheitsgefühl an einem wunderschönen Ort der Natur und Schokoladenkuchen! :D Geschafft aber glücklich von dem Tag breiteten wir unser Schlaflager aus. Nikita und Jeanelle verkrümelten sich gleich in das eine Zelt, da sie schon wussten das es ihnen sonst zu kalt werden würde. Wir anderen fünf lagen in unseren Schlafsäcken draußen unter dem Sternenhimmel. Joyner und ich hielten uns allerdings die Möglichkeit offen uns in der Nacht in das zweite Zelt zu verziehen, da der Wind dort Oben schon sehr eisig war. Für mich war es wahrlich und wahrhaftig mein erstes Mal das ich unter dem freien Himmel und den Sternen geschlafen habe und zuerst wollte ich meine Augen auch garnicht zu machen, da ich so fasziniert von dem Anblick über mir war. Doch schnell fielen meine Augen zu und irgendwann in der Nacht als Joyner schon im Zelt verschwunden war entschied ich mich auch rein zu gehen (dort war es natürlich trotzdem kalt…). Am nächsten Morgen dachte ich mir nur so ‘wow ich habe wirklich an diesem Ort hier übernachtet’ und genoß dabei die aufgehende Sonne hinter dem Berg. Es gab ein kleines Frühstück bei der Hütte und dann begann auch schon unserer Abstieg, der uns zu deinem Dorf bringen sollte wo wir dann einen Jeep nahmen um zu dem Bahnhof zurück zu kommen. Der Abstieg zeigte uns noch einmal die volle Pracht dieses Ortes, mit den Kakteen, ausgetrockneten steinigen Flussbetten und trockenen Felsklippen und auch die Rückfahrt in dem Jeep führte uns entlang einer trocken, bergigen Landschaft, Feldern wo Frauen und Männer die Ernte mit den Händen eintrugen und kleinen Dörfern. Auf der Rückfahrt im Zug war ich allerdings doch sehr schläfrig und als ich dann Zuhause war und duschen konnte war ich schon glücklich. Dieser kurze Ausflug war einfach großartig und ich hoffe das ich das nächste mal wieder mitkommen kann.

Weekend outing places in Pune

Pune is one of the best cities to live in India owing to its comfortable weather and ample greenery. You could spend a weekend shopping or exploring the many places around Pune keeping aside your work tensions.

There are numerous trekking spots near Pune which form part of the majestic Western Ghats range and the Deccan plateau. There are numerous historical forts near Pune waiting to be explored since time immemorial each with its own story.

Lonavla and Khandala are twin hill stations sprawling across the Sahyadri ranges at a height of 2041 ft above sea level. Karla caves near Lonavla, is a complex of cave shrines built by Buddhist monks around 3rd to 2nd century B.C. Although there are a number of trekking spots in Lonavala Rajmachi trek is a quite famous route. Rajmachi Fort (Killa) consists of two twin fortresses Shriwardhan Ballekilla and Manaranjan Balekilla. The ideal time to visit is during the rainy season when lush greenery and beautiful waterfalls can be observed along the hills. A visit to Lonavla is never complete without a real camping experience. Check out various other adventure sports activities such as water rappelling in Lonavla. The hill station is located about 70 km away from Purva Silversands apartments in Mundhwa.

If you are a nature or bird lover, a visit to Bhigwan for bird watching would be interesting. It is the most happening place for birdwatchers as the region is frequently visited by migratory birds especially during winter. Bhigwan is located on the Pune-Solapur Highway around 105 km from Pune on the backwaters of Ujani dam. Bhigwan is famous for birdwatching especially flamingo and wild life photography

Agha Khan Palace has its historical importance for it was once used by Sultan Mohammed Shah and Aga Khan III. The palace had also housed Mahatma Gandhi as a prisoner during the Quit India Movement. The famous Osho ashram is a place for reviving your lost soul, meditate and be one with yourself in the unperturbed atmosphere.You can find a few guest houses here in case you want to spend more time. Both the places are within 6 kilometers distance from Mundhwa.

National war museum is another place to visit which is only 5km from Purva Silversands Mundhwa. The museum was built in 1997 as a memorial for Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation. The main highlight of this museum is MIG 23 BN jet fighter used in Kargil war.

Parvati Hill is one of the most scenic hill side locations in Pune situated at a height of 2100 ft above sea level. A Parvati temple built during the rule of Peshwa dynasty is situated atop the hill.The hill is just a 45-minute drive from Mundhwa.

These are just a few attractions to name among the vast number of locations Pune has to offer. Weekends will never be boring in Pune as you can always engage yourself with a trip, short or long ones!

Kataldhar is the name of a big waterfall near Lonavla in Pune district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. This waterfall is not so famous because to reach to the valley is somewhat difficult and need some experience of basic trekking before exploring this place. Water is not available there for the whole year, but a good amount of water falls during the monsoon season. Though it is difficult to reach to the valley there is a heaven at the end of the fall. Kataldhar Waterfall is located near Rajmachi Fort. On the way of Rajmachi Trekking route you will find 3 mango trees. This is only one option to reach Kataldhar Waterfall. From this point you can descend the Ulhas valley through dense forest. After reaching at Kataldhar Waterfall you will see one eye shape cave where 100 people easily accommodate in that cave. From this cave you will see Rajmachi Fort (Srivardhan Fort Balekilla).

Raireshwar is situated in Bhor Taluka near Pune, India, 82 km away. It is situated in between various hills and forts such as Kenjalgad.

Raireshwar has a temple famous for its historical importance. The temple is very old and of stone structure, but it was later re-constructed in the 18th century. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj took the oath of Hindavi Swarajya in this temple at the age of 16 in 1645 and then created history. It’s said that he had cut his little finger and taken the oath by dripping blood onto the Shivling. There is a large portrait of Shivaji Maharaj and his friends inside the temple. Thus, Raireshwar can be considered as an important place in Maratha history. The temple is on a plateau, which has many beautiful flowers during monsoon, the best time to visit this place. Kenjalgad is located at South East of Raireshwar at a very close distance.
