Two bomb explosions near candidates' offices in the Pakistani province of Balochistan killed at least 28 people and wounded dozens on the eve of general elections, officials said.
The first blast killed 16 people in Pishin district, north of Quetta city.
A second explosion left 12 people dead in Qila Saifullah to the east. There was no immediate claim for the attacks.
The vote has been marred by violence and claims of poll-rigging. Former PM Imran Khan is barred from contesting.
Police are still trying to determine the cause of the two blasts.
Resource-rich Balochistan - Pakistan's largest, and poorest, province - has a history of violence. It has seen a decades-long struggle for greater autonomy by various groups, some of them armed. Islamist militants, including the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), operate along the border with Afghanistan.
The bomb in Pishin, a town about 100km (62 miles) south-east of the Afghan border, went off in front of an independent candidate's party office. The provincial authorities said 25 people were also wounded.
Images on social media showed cars and motorbikes blown apart by the force of the explosion. Officials told the BBC the candidate was meeting his polling agent at the time.
The second blast targeted the election office of the JUI-F party. A senior police official told AFP news agency it took place in the main bazaar of Qila Saifullah, about 190km (120 miles) east of Quetta.
Twenty people were wounded in the incident and the number of casualties in the two attacks could rise, officials said.
There have been violent incidents in both Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces in the week before Thursday's vote, and the violence in Pishin and Qila Saifullah was not unexpected.
In mid-January, Baloch Liberation Army-Azad (BLA) insurgents released a pamphlet after claiming responsibility for bombing an election training office. The pamphlet urged people to boycott the elections. Soon after, reports of hand grenade attacks on political party offices were reported from various cities in the province.
Many voters in Balochistan feel neglected by the country's political parties, given the province has so few seats in parliament. They often feel candidates are foisted on them, with few if any links to Balochistan.
And many feel the vote is unfair. "It is a selection," numerous people told BBC Urdu in the city of Turbat last month.
Following Wednesday's attacks, the Balochistan government said Thursday's vote would proceed as planned.
"Rest assured, we will not allow terrorists to undermine or sabotage this crucial democratic process," provincial information minister Jan Achakzai posted on X, formerly Twitter.
More than 128 million voters are eligible to cast ballots in the election. In Pakistan's first-past-the-post system, 266 of 336 National Assembly seats are directly elected.
But many people are questioning the credibility of the vote as Khan and his party, the PTI, have been sidelined.
The PTI won the largest number of seats in the last general election but Khan was jailed on corruption charges last year and disqualified from running for public office. Last week he was convicted in three other cases and faces years in prison - he says all the charges are politically motivated.
The authorities deny carrying out a crackdown, but many PTI leaders are behind bars, in hiding or have defected. Thousands of the party's supporters were rounded up after protests - at times violent - when Khan was taken into custody last year.
PTI candidates are having to run as independents following the electoral commission's decision to strip the party of its cricket bat symbol. Electoral symbols are vital in helping voters mark their ballots in a country with high rates of illiteracy.
The man tipped to win Thursday's election is three-time former PM Nawaz Sharif, who himself was behind bars at the last election. Analysts say it appears he has done a deal with the military to facilitate his return to politics.
A high turnout will be key to the PTI's chances, many analysts say. How to tackle, and who to blame for, the country's economic crisis will be high in voters' minds. Results must be announced within 14 days of the election.

Hey! Where did you visit in Pakistan? I'm going to live in Turkey for a few months next year and I have family friends visiting Karachi at the same time.. they invited me to fly there to meet up with them (they're originally from Karachi so familiar and can show me around) so I was thinking about doing that + being solo there for a bit. But I'm not very familiar culturally, I'm in my mid 20s and female, and my family friends were happy to invite me but sort of perplexed by my wanting to and essentially said it would be really challenging for any US tourist. I've been India before and that point will have also lived in Morocco for a few months.. but they have me feeling hesitant about it.. just wondering what your experience was like
Hey! This trip I was in Karachi, Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa near the Afghan border, but I've also done Lahore, Mohenja-daro, Balochistan and also to Wagah for the border ceremony! Gilgit and Hunza Valley are on my list. I lived in Karachi for several years and graduated high school there, and my parents still live and work there, so I'm very culturally competent and my listening comprehension for Urdu is, like, passable enough especially once I've been back in the country for a few days; all this to say, my experience there is definitely different than yours will be! If you have spent significant time in Muslim-majority countries like Turkey and Morocco, and also have been to India, I think you are more likely to have a comfortable time than most. You'll frankly probably land and think, yeah this feels like South Asia but Muslim, and you'll have a good grasp pretty much right away.
Many people will stare at you. Many people will talk about you openly. Many people will ask for pictures with you or take pictures of you WITHOUT asking (for the record, I say yes to women and children and no to men without women or children around, because men will touch you in ways I KNOW are culturally taboo while taking a photo). There's no queuing culture and can be a lot of shoving. Traffic will feel tremendously hazardous. There are not very many women out and about in most places, especially outside of cities. Pakistan is very poor and petty theft is very common. You have probably experienced all of these things before and will be totally fine! People are very genuinely excited to meet you and are hugely hospitable. It can be a lot of fun and a really wonderful experience depending on your own risk tolerance.
I will say, having lived there, there just isn't a ton to do in Karachi besides eat. It's a desert on the ocean. It's incredibly hot, it's dirty, it's infrastructure is old and during monsoon sewage washes back onto the street. It's not a tourist city at all. If your family friends live in Defense, it will feel wealthier and more westernized, and if they live in KDA or Clifton, it will feel a little less so.
In Karachi I would suggest: The Mohatta Palace Museum, Empress Market (for the bazaar experience), one of those good barbecue places on the beach, Jinnah's tomb, renting a beach hut on one of the semi-private beaches for a day (and riding a camel or convincing a performer to let you hold a mongoose), Javed Nihari and if you do absolutely no other street food (which will often make you sick tbf), you HAVE to go to Yusuf Kebab and get a bun kebab special.
In Karachi I would AVOID: going to the public beach. Do NOT do this, if your family friends are Pakistani they might not guess how bad it gets, but do NOT go to the public beach as a foreign woman. I have been three times and was sexually assaulted all three times, and have never had it happen to me anywhere else in Pakistan. You draw an immediate big crowd and it gets really dodgy.
As for solo traveling, I have solo traveled in Lahore and it was great! It's feels like a grand Mughal city, a beautiful blend of architecture, historical sites, good food, and juuust enough tourist infrastructure to be accessible. I stayed in a hostel and had an amazing time, never felt unsafe, and liked some of my roommates so much we went out together several times. Islamabad is beautiful and very safe (crawling with foreigners) but it doesn't feel like the rest of Pakistan at all, and it can be really expensive. It's the only place I would suggest going into the mountains as a solo traveler (The Monal is an amazing mountain top restaurant) although I hear Hunza Valley can be okay during tourist season. Mohenja-daro would be totally fine but I don't know if they're open since the flooding earlier this year. You could do Wagah as a day trip from Lahore but it's a big time suck and there's nothing to do besides the very short border ceremony. I would definitely NOT go to KPK or Balochistan as a solo female.

National Geographic Reveals Its 2022 Pictures of the Year
— December 02, 2022 | Jaron Schneider
Tumblr media
National Geographic has published its 2022 Pictures of the Year. The headline story of its December issue, these selections are the result of reviewing more than two million photos that were captured in the field this year.
The photos are a selection of images captured by National Geographic photographers from around the world. The publication says that they offer breathtaking glimpses of a shared human journey and serve to remind viewers of the unique elements of the planet.
“From the discovery of the shipwreck Endurance and the impact of climate change on endangered species to the first summit of Mount Everest by an all-Black team of explorers as well as emotional and striking shots of Ukrainian refugees standing in solidarity, National Geographic captures it all in Pictures of the Year 2022,” the publication writes.
This past year, 132 photographers were sent on assignments to 60 countries and National Geographic says they shipped a total of 4,000 pounds of gear into the field. Together, these photographers filed an astounding 2,238,899 images from 120-degree temperatures in Pakistan’s Sindh and Balochistan provinces to days reaching 49 degrees below zero in Canada’s Northwest Territories. National Geographic says that in the process, nearly every continent was covered, resulting in “a robust and diverse look at life across the globe.”
Below are just a few of the images PetaPixel selected from the full list of photos that are featured both in National Geographic’s December print edition and on its website. Many of them may be new to viewers while some might be familiar, such as the photo of Native American Quannah Rose Chasinghorse or the day-to-night photo of the Grand Canyon thanks to lengthy features on each that PetaPixel featured earlier this year.

Istanbul-based photographer Rena Effendi traveled to Armenia and Azerbaijan in search of Satyrus effendi, a rare and endemic butterfly named after her father, the late Soviet Azerbaijani entomologist Rustam Effendi. While Effendi hasn’t yet spotted the butterfly in the wild, she did photograph a preserved one in the specimen-packed cabin of her father’s protégé Parkev Kazarian, a taxidermist in the mountainous town of Gyumri, Armenia. “I loved that it was still beautiful, even dead,” she says. | Photo by Rena Effendi/National Geographic
A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, launched from Cape Canaveral in the early hours of June 19, streaks above a stand of bald cypress trees. This was the second time in less than a year that a SpaceX rocket unexpectedly made its way into photographer Mac Stone’s frame while he was shooting at night in a remote swamp. Stone says that the increased frequency of launches without fanfare “suggests that we have crossed over into a new era where cosmic missions are simply business as usual.” | Photo by Mac Stone

Draped in morning mist, NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) looms over Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39B in March as the rocket awaits testing. The 322-foot- tall vehicle is the linchpin of NASA’s Artemis program, a stepping stone to Mars that also aims to land the first woman and the first person of color on the moon. With two boosters and four main engines, SLS can fling
a crew capsule moon- ward with 8.8 million pounds of thrust—15 percent more oomph than the Apollo program’s Saturn V rocket. Each SLS will be used only once. After this rocket’s launch during an uncrewed test flight planned for this year, its pieces are expected to either fall into the ocean or enter orbit around the sun. | Photo by Dan Winters/National Geographic

A small refinery on the roof of a laboratory at ETH Zurich pulls carbon dioxide and water directly from the air and feeds them into a reactor that concentrates solar radiation, generating extreme heat. That splits the molecules, creating a mixture that ultimately can be processed into kerosene or methanol. Researchers hope this system eventually can produce market-ready, carbon-neutral jet fuel. One Swiss airline has already announced plans to use the fuel. | Photo by Davide Monteleone/National Geographic

Around Vostok and other southern Line Islands, in the remote central Pacific, abundant small reef fish support a thriving population of top predators. Here a gray reef shark swims over Montipora corals in a sea of fusilier damselfish and Bartlett’s anthias. Enric Sala, a National Geographic Explorer in Residence, visited the area in 2009 for his Pristine Seas project, which conducted the first scientific surveys of marine life around the islands and recommended protection. Now the sea around the islands is a reserve, which may have helped it recover from a dramatic coral die-off in the wake of a 2015-16
El Niño warming event. On this more recent trip, Sala captured the reefs restored to their former glory. | Photo by Enric Sala/National Geographic

Wearing a protective suit, Armando Salazar steps carefully across sizzling rock, carrying a chunk of glowing lava on a pitchfork. It’s just another day on the job for Salazar, a member of the Spanish military, as he helped scientists collect samples during a 2021 eruption at La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcanic ridge. Scientists and others also ventured across fresh flows to monitor gases, record earthquakes, and more, hoping to better understand the event, which lasted for almost 86 days. Their findings can help them determine Cumbre Vieja’s potential for future blasts. | Photo by Arturo Rodriguez

With its Artemis I mission, NASA is kicking off an ambitious plan to return humans to the moon. For the scheduled launch, this uncrewed trip’s commander would be the “moonikin” Campos, named after a NASA engineer who helped save the lives of the Apollo 13 crew. During a trip around the moon slated to last more than a month, Campos is sitting in for crew in the Orion capsule. Sensors in Campos’s headrest and behind its seat track vibration and acceleration, expected to reach four times that of Earth’s gravity. Campos wears radiation sensors and the survival suit that future missions’ flesh-and-blood passengers will use during launch, reentry, and other critical moments. NASA hopes a crew of four will make the next trek aboard Orion as early as May 2024, as part of Artemis II. | Photo by Dan Winters/National Geographic

Quannah Rose Chasinghorse uses her visibility to advocate for concerns of Indigenous peoples. “We are still here,” the model and activist says, but “our voices, experiences, stories, cultures, and traditions aren’t recognized the way they should be. We carry so much knowledge, strength, and power, not just trauma and pain. And we are so much more than those harmful stereotypes.” Chasinghorse is Hän Gwich’in and Sičangu/Oglala Lakota, but was born on Diné (Navajo) land in Arizona. Tumblr media
On March 23, 2021, President of Dera Ghazi Khan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Khawaja Jalaluddin Rumi called on Chief Minister Usman Bazdar at the Chief Minister’s Office in Lahore. This significant meeting focused on enhancing entrepreneurship in Punjab and addressing various challenges related to industrial growth in the region.
During the discussion, Khawaja Jalaluddin Rumi shared insights regarding the obstacles facing industrial development. He emphasized the need for supportive initiatives to foster a thriving business environment. In response, Chief Minister Usman Bazdar introduced the innovative concept of "Cottage Business Housing," designed to merge workspace and living areas, making it easier for entrepreneurs to manage both their businesses and personal lives.
The "Cottage Business Housing" initiative aims to provide self-employment opportunities and housing, particularly benefiting women in the region. Bazdar outlined plans for the Quaid-e-Azam Business Park, which is envisioned as a model for a special economic zone. This project is currently under development, with efforts underway to ensure the provision of essential utilities like electricity and water.
In a bid to improve connectivity, an MoU has been signed to develop an interchange that will link the Quaid-e-Azam Business Park with the main dual carriageway. This infrastructure enhancement is expected to facilitate smoother transportation for goods and services. Additionally, an underground power supply and a wastewater treatment plant are planned for the business park, along with proposals for establishing an industrial zone in Muzaffargarh through a public-private partnership. Bazdar expressed confidence that the full potential of business development in South Punjab can be harnessed through these initiatives.
The Chief Minister also announced that industrial zones would be established rapidly in Muzaffargarh and Bahawalpur, emphasizing the importance of industrialization in creating employment opportunities. He reassured that the provincial government would extend all possible support to traders and industrialists in Punjab.
Khawaja Jalaluddin Rumi further updated the Chief Minister on the progress of the establishment of anchorages in the region. He conveyed satisfaction with the status of anchorages in Mount Sulaiman and surrounding areas in Balochistan, noting that these developments align with the vision set forth by Prime Minister Imran Khan. The expansion of anchorages into remote areas represents a significant step toward building a welfare-oriented society, where economic activities can thrive in underserved regions.
Rumi praised the collaborative efforts of the business and industrial communities in supporting the establishment of anchorages, highlighting the positive impact these initiatives can have on local economies. He reiterated the commitment of the Ghazi Khan business community to cooperate fully with the government in efforts aimed at public welfare. Rumi also noted the ongoing welfare schemes targeting education and health services in Balochistan, Sindh, North Waziristan, and South Punjab.
In addition, Rumi emphasized the importance of free medical services being provided to patients in hospitals in Multan, illustrating the government’s commitment to healthcare access. He mentioned that scholarships are being awarded to needy students in South Punjab, including Dera Ghazi Khan, to promote vocational education and skill development.
The meeting underscored a collaborative spirit between the government and the business sector, with both parties recognizing the potential for economic growth through strategic partnerships. Chief Minister Usman Bazdar expressed gratitude to Khawaja Jalaluddin Rumi and the business community for their proactive involvement in fostering industrial and economic development.
Overall, the dialogue between President of Dera Ghazi Khan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Khawaja Jalaluddin Rumi and Chief Minister Usman Bazdar marks a promising step forward in Punjab’s journey toward enhanced economic activity and improved living standards for its citizens. The initiatives discussed have the potential to create a more vibrant and sustainable business environment, ultimately leading to increased job creation and economic prosperity in the region.
With a focus on integrating industry with community welfare, the plans laid out during this meeting reflect a forward-thinking approach to governance and economic development. The commitment from both the government and the business community to work together will be crucial in realizing these ambitious goals for Punjab’s future.

THE BIGGEST LIE IN THE WORLD IS THAT PAKISTAN IS AN ISLAMIC REPUBLIC.
Capital punishment in Islam is traditionally regulated by the Islamic law (sharīʿah), which derived from the Quran, ḥadīth literature, and sunnah (accounts of the sayings and living habits attributed to the Islamic prophet Muhammad during his lifetime).] Crimes according to the sharīʿa law which could result in capital punishment include apostasy from Islam, murder, rape, adultery, homosexuality, etc. Death penalty is in use in many Muslim-majority countries, where it is utilized as sharīʿah-prescribed punishment for crimes such as apostasy from Islam, adultery, witchcraft, murder, rape, and publishing pornography.[5List of crimes where capital punishment is applicable

Organized crime in Pakistan includes fraud, racketeering, drug trafficking, smuggling, money laundering, extortion, ransom, political violence, etc. Terrorist attacks became common during the 2000s, especially in North-West Frontier Province, the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, Balochistan, Karachi and Lahore. Vehicle theft is common, particularly in the large cities.

It is not true. Pakistan is neither ISLAMIC nor REPUBLIC. There is no Shariah Law, therefore it is not ISLAMIC. There is Rule of Law, Equality Freedom and Jussive for the common man therefore it is neither DEMOCRATIC nor REPUBLIC.
The JUDICIARY including but not limited to Judges, the Lawyers and the Clerks are sold to the highest bidder. The poor people have no money so they cannot afford to buy justice. WHAT A SHAME!
The Government, its Ministers, Officials and the public is corrupt from top to bottom They tell lies day and night from both sides of their mouth. They are all HYPOCRITES AND BLOODY LIARS, PERIOD!

Gunmen have killed at least 22 people in south-west Pakistan after forcing them out of their vehicles and checking their identity, officials say.
The attack happened overnight on a highway in Balochistan province, where security forces are battling sectarian, ethnic and separatist violence.
The armed men checked identity documents, reportedly singling out those from Punjab to be shot, before setting the vehicles alight, officials alleged.
The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a militant group, has said it was behind the attacks in Musa Khel district.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said that security forces had killed 12 militants in operations after the attacks, but did not give further details.
Over the past 24 hours, the BLA has launched a series of attacks on multiple government installations - including police stations and security forces’ camps across province.
In Kalat, 11 were killed - five of them security personnel - and six bodies were recovered in another district in Balochistan.
According to Najibullah Kakar, a senior local official, around 30 to 40 militants were involved in Musa Khel.
"They stopped 22 vehicles," he told AFP news agency. "Vehicles traveling to and from Punjab were inspected, and individuals from Punjab were identified and shot."
The BLA has said it was targeting military personnel travelling in civilian clothes, according to news agency Reuters.
Before the attack, the BLA warned the Baloch public to stay away from the highway, adding that their "fight is against the occupying Pakistani military".
"We have taken full control of all major highways across Balochistan, blocking them completely," it added.
Mohsin Naqvi, the interior minister, said the attacks were "a well-thought out plan to create anarchy in Pakistan".
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed "deep grief and condemnation over the terrorist attack" in a statement issued by his office.
Balochistan is Pakistan's largest province but, although it has more resources than other provinces, it is the least developed.
The BLA and other Baloch separatists have intensified attacks on Punjabis and Sinhdis from elsewhere in Pakistan working in the region. They have also targeted foreign energy firms they accuse of exploiting the region without sharing profits.
In a similar incident in April this year, nine passengers were offloaded from a bus in Balochistan and shot dead after their IDs were checked.
Several Western countries, including the UK and US, have designated the BLA as a global terrorist organisation.
