Pearl S. Buck became the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938. Her parents were missionaries, so from 1892–1934, she spent most of her time in China, an experience that influenced her writing. Her best-selling novel, The Good Earth, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1932. From the day of her move to the US, Pearl was active in American civil rights and women's rights activities. She published essays in both Crisis, the journal of the NAACP, and Opportunity, the magazine of the Urban League; she was a trustee of Howard University for twenty years, beginning in the early 1940s. In 1942, Pearl and her husband founded the East and West Association, dedicated to cultural exchange and understanding between Asia and the West. In 1949, outraged that existing adoption services considered Asian and mixed-race children unadoptable, Pearl established Welcome House, the first international, inter-racial adoption agency; in the nearly five decades of its work, Welcome House has assisted in the placement of over five thousand children. In 1964, to provide support for Amerasian children who were not eligible for adoption, Pearl also established the Pearl S. Buck Foundation, which provides sponsorship funding for thousands of children in half-a-dozen Asian countries. . . . #pearlsbuck #herstory #womenshistory #womenshistorymonth #frontier #literature #nobelprize #china #asia #naacp #civilrights #adoption https://www.instagram.com/p/BvmCySPFFy2/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1wemuoe9tfm3q

Florence Nightingale is best remembered for her work as a nurse during the Crimean War and her contribution towards the reform of the sanitary conditions in military field hospitals. She and a team of nurses improved the unsanitary conditions at a British base hospital, reducing the death count by two-thirds. Nightingale herself spent every waking minute caring for the soldiers. Nicknamed ‘the Lady with the Lamp’ for the night rounds she made tending to the wounded and sick, Nightingale continued in her work after the war and was instrumental in establishing a permanent military nursing service and implementing improvements to the army medical services. . . . #womenempowerment #herstory #frontiers##florencenightingale #nurse #history #crimeanwar #hospital #womenshistorymonth #military #medicalservices #ladywiththelamp (at Port Orange, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvgzgevFCJd/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1jhaeh63wp1xo

Madam C.J. Walker was the first American woman to become a self-made millionaire. The idea that launched her entrepreneurial success arose out of hardship: she realized she was losing hair. She developed a hair growth formula which she turned into a lucrative line of hair products: “Madam Walker’s Wonderful Hair Grower.” Off the heels of her products’ success, she expanded into more cosmetic markets from shampoos to cold creams to hot combs. She also donated the largest amount of money by an African American toward the construction of an Indianapolis YMCA in 1913. . . . #indianapolis #ymca #womenshistory #womenshistorymonth #selfmade #selfmademillionaire #herstory #hair #history #frontier #madamcjwalker #entrepreneur #entrepreneurlife #hairgrower #success #successmindset #africanamericanhistory #cosmetics (at Port Orange, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/BveN5RUFKBz/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1bolfvyaxitg7

Most people know who wrote the Declaration of Independence...But who published it? Mary Goddard, Baltimore’s first postmaster, and likely the U.S. government’s first female employee. Goddard made her name as publisher of The Maryland Journal for 10 years while also managing Baltimore’s post office during the Revolutionary War. In 1777, she printed the first copy of the Declaration with the identities of the signers revealed — a huge political moment that brought the signer’s names into fame while hers sank into obscurity. She continued as postmaster until October 1789, when she was replaced by a male appointee who could undertake the travel necessary to supervise the operations of the postal service through the South. Her removal was widely protested in Baltimore. . . . #marylandjournal #postalservice #womenfirsts #firstwomen #postmaster #declarationofindependence #revolutionarywar #marygoddard #publisher #baltimore #goddard #frontier #womenshistorymonth #womenhistory #herstory (at Port Orange, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvbvGNolThQ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1c63vernirnjd

Harriet Tubman was born into slavery but made a stunning escape in 1849. She became a leading abolitionist, rescuing innumerable others from slavery by operating the Underground Railroad. This secret route of tunnels, back roads and safe houses led from the South all the way to Pennsylvania. it’s believed Harriet personally led at least 70 slaves to freedom, including her elderly parents, and instructed dozens of others on how to escape on their own. She claimed, “I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger.” Many don’t know Tubman also dedicated her life to helping the elderly and indigent and founded her own Home for the Aged. . . . #harriettubman #harrietsgreatescape #strongwomen #womenshistory #herstory #womenshistorymonth #abolitionist #slavery #leader #undergroundrailroad #freedom #pioneerwoman #femaleleaders #womenmakinghistory #civilwarhistory #civilwar #unionspy #pricelessimpact #impact #visionary #elderly #undergroundrailroadmovement (at Port Orange, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvRW7cwlJbA/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=b8rj8f61vq1w

Mary McLeod Bethune was a leading educator and school founder who served as an unofficial advisor on African-American issues to presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. She was the only one of 17 children in her family to go to school. With 5 students and less than $2 she started the Daytona Norman and Industrial School for Black Women in Daytona Beach Florida. The school merged with the Cookman Institute for Men in 1923 and became Bethune-Cookman College, one of the few black colleges in the country (and one which endures today). Mary McLeod Bethune also served as a consultant to the United Nations and was a vice president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. One of the most famous black women leaders of her day, Bethune has been honored with a memorial in Lincoln Park in Washington, D.C. and a U.S. postage stamp. . . . #bethunecookman #marymcleodbethune #marymcleod #herstory #history #daytona #daytonabeach #florida #naacp #trailblazers #famousblackwomen #daytonabeachflorida #fdr #truman #empowerment #rolemodel #africanamericanhistory #postagestamp #educator #founder #womenshistorymonth (at Port Orange, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvMPjdpFgW1/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=166yto9vfhlqj

Clara Barton is one of the most honored women in American history. Barton risked her life to bring supplies when she treated injured Union soldiers on the battlefield during the Civil War. Nursing education was not very formalized at that time and she did not attend nursing school, so she provided self-taught nursing care. Working with influential friends and contacts such as Frederick Douglass, she founded the American Red Cross in 1881, at age 59, and led it for the next 23 years. Her understanding of the ways she could provide help to people in distress guided her throughout her life. By the force of her personal example, she opened paths to the new field of volunteer service. . . . #clarabarton #honorablewomen #womenwhomadehistory #history #women #womenshistorymonth #womenempowerment #nursing #civilwar #civilwarhistory #redcross #americanredcross #volunteer #volunteering #volunteerspirit #frederickdouglass #herstory #herstorypersonals #service #civilservant #nursingschool #influentialwomen #influential #helpingothers (at Port Orange, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvJrdsrF_MZ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=4fq2th721ylm
