It’s a Beautiful Day Co-founder David LaFlamme Dies at 82
David LaFlamme, who brought violin to rock ’n’ roll music as co-founder of It’s a Beautiful Day, has died at 82, his daughter said.
The musician died Aug. 6 of Parkinson’s disease. His daughter Kira LaFlamme announced her father’s death publicly Aug. 10.
“There are so many beautiful tributes from friends and fans; so beautiful and healing,” Kira LaFlamme said. “ … He was amazing performer and songwriter, playing gigs up until COVID shut everything down. Watching him play was electrifying.”
Pete Sears remembered LaFlamme as “a wonderful musician and a very special person,” while Roger McNamee called his friend a “lovely man” whom he will miss.
Coming out of the San Francisco that launched the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe and the Fish and tons of other bands, It’s a Beautiful Day were best known for “White Bird.” LaFlamme and the modern version of IABD were frequent fliers at Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch.
“Fair winds, David LaFlamme,” Vanessa Kaukonen said. “You changed lives and we are all better people for your presence on this planet.
Though they didn’t find the success of their West Coast brethren, It’s a Beautiful Day and LaFlamme, who was to the violin as Ian Anderson is to the flute, were loved and respected by their peers, including the surviving Airplane members, who recalled LaFlamme’s “remarkable violin skills and vocal talent.”
“Master musician and raconteur extraordinaire David LaFlamme is on his journey to the promised land,” Barry “Fish” Melton said.
“Travel safely, my friend, and say hello to all our friends who’ve gone on before.”

On this day, 39 years ago in 1984, the Marin Senior Services and Berkeley Creative Living Center presented the Legendary “DINOSAURS” playing this one night only concert at the Marin Civic Auditorium.
The "San Francisco Sound" band featured Barry Melton of Country Joe & the Fish , Peter Albin from Big Brother & the Holding Company, Robert Hunter from the Grateful Dead, John Cipollina from QuickSilver Messenger Service and Spencer Dryden from Jefferson Airplane! Awesome light show as always was provided by San Francisco Light Works.
This BEAUTIFUL multicolored psychedelic Dino Clad poster was done by none other than Big Five master poster artist Alton Kelley and is truly just Over the Top…. even if he did misspell San Francisco is on this poster!😝 He did most of the fantastic posters for the band while they were together.

It was 56 years ago back on October 30, 1967, that this fairly rare "Poster From The Past" was used to promote a benefit for KPFA radio in San Francisco. This was advertised as a Halloween Costume Ball, and took place for one night only at the historic Fillmore Auditorium hosted by Bill Graham. This dance/concert featured Pink Floyd, Sopwith Camel, The Commettee,The Collectors and The Incredible Fish (Barry Melton).
Berkeley FM station KPFA took a lead role as local voice for social activism and causes giving airtime and coverage to the anti-war, civil rights and Black Panther groups. Broadcasting in 1949 KPFA became the flagship station in the Pacifica Radio network and the first public radio broadcaster in the USA.
The artist that created this far-out and seldom seen piece is sadly unknown to me…..

Lecture 10: WOODSTOCK HIGHLIGHTS: Country Joe and the Fish perform their satirical antiwar anthem of the times, “I Feel Like I’m Fixin’ to Die Rag,” a nihilistic absurdist tune written by the band’s co-founder Country Joe McDonald (who started the psychedelic rock band in 1965 in Berkeley, California, along with Barry Melton) that emphasized the horrors of the Vietnam War and the absurdity of its defenders. Notice how the countercultural and predominantly youthful crowd at Woodstock sings along and generally has a great time!

Gary “Chicken” Hirsh Dead at 81
- Country Joe and the Fish drummer is credited with changing the “F-I-S-H Cheer” into something more colorful
Gary “Chicken” Hirsh, the Country Joe and the Fish drummer who is credited with “the profane adjustment” to the band’s “F-I-S-H Cheer,” died Aug. 17 at age 81.
“He died as he lived - on his own terms, surrounded by family in Ashland, Ore.,” his family said in a statement.
Craft Recordings eulogized Hirsh as “one of the best psychedelic drummers of his era” and former Grateful Dead keyboardist Tom Constanten remembered his friend and collaborator as “serenely excellent, onstage and off.”
“His understated approach flew under the radar, but not my radar,” Constanten wrote on Facebook. “He shined in the wild and wooly woods of improvisation. Offstage, he was generous and thoughtful.”
Country Joe McDonald posted a photo on his website in remembrance of the man who manned the kit for the Fish from 1966 to ’69, while Barry “Fish” Melton said on Facebook: “Sad to hear of the passing of an old friend.”
Tumblr media
Hirsh had left the band by the time it played Woodstock. But that didn’t stop McDonald and 500,000 from doing “The F-I-S-H Cheer.”
What’s that spell?, McDonald asked.
FUCK!, came the reply.

Barry Melton, “The Fish” from Country Joe and the Fish is celebrating his 71st birthday today. “The Fish Cheer” started out as above, but by the time Country Joe did it at Woodstock, he changed the letters. (We are sure none of you know what letters he used…..)
Barry still plays music. When his son was…
