A tale from Mexicali co-owner Kim on meeting life-long friends while traveling: "On our first trip to Thailand in 1995, we were on the island of Koh Samui. While searching for accommodations, we spied some beautiful and affordable bungalows where I saw children playing. Having a 2 year old and a 7 month old, I could tell this was the place for us! This is where we met Ansgar and Petra, a German couple who were with their 2 year old, and another couple with a child. We were happy to meet other couples with small children who also spoke English, and we enjoyed each others company for a week before heading back to Bangkok to finish up our buy. Since these were the days before internet access was common, we weren't sure if we would ever run into them again, but we exchanged addresses and felt lucky to have met cool people. Fast forward a couple of weeks, and we randomly bumped into each other on the streets of Bangkok, and spent a few more fun days together. Another good bye and a, "If you're ever in the US on the East Coast, come visit!" After one or two letters exchanged, they said they were coming for a visit in August for 3 weeks! Their intention was to stay with us for a few days and then travel throughout New England. The weather was amazing here in our little Mid Coast Maine town, and we got along so well they wound up staying with us the whole time. Twenty-four years later, we see each other at least once a year either in Maine, their homeland in the Westwoods of Germany, or meet up in one of the beautiful countries we buy in. We have celebrated birthdays in the Himalayas, France, Switzerland, and Ireland, enjoyed the tropics of Bali, and much more. They are both in different lines of work, but their love of travel, wonderful sense of humor, and all-around awesomeness has made us life-long friends.
