MVice fans or "and they were partners" fans! Homicide: Life on the Streets' Pembleton is the moody, jaded Crockett, and Bayliss is the "have a little hope" Tubbs. Only much much much better written.
Neither of them is a lady killer, Bayliss is canonically bi, and their dysfunctional love is addressed rather than swept under the rug. Homicide's Baltimore is cold, impoverished, and dreary to Vice's Miami heat waves, cocaine clubs, and gaudy art deco. But they are both noir and both partnerships are beautiful to study.
(also, the other partnerships in the series are also given arcs and episodes instead of being sidelined. I personally love watching Meldrick annoy the life out of whoever he's partnered with, or watch the female cops try with increasing frustration to handle their male coworkers. It's darker than Vice but urgh!! it's so good!!)

Some people know exactly what they’re after when looking to buy a home. For Phoebe Rolleston, it’s all about the feeling.
When the artist and her husband, finance professional George Rolleston, first stepped into this Glen Iris home in 2014, she instantly knew this was the one. ‘It was one of the first houses we looked at, and the first one we bid on,’ she says. ‘We are decisive people. We loved the feel of the house immediately.’ Once the couple moved in, everything fell into place. ‘It was quickly filled with all the things we love, including our first baby Humphry, who took his first steps here the week we moved in,’ Phoebe says.
One element that stands out about this home is its charmingly eclectic design influences. Believed to be built in 1980 (and renovated multiple times since) the house contains Japanese inspired elements, alongside quirky ‘80s proportions, and a facade that resembles a Scandinavian lodge. ‘It’s a real mixed bag, and we love that about,’ says Phoebe.
The couple redid the bathrooms not long after moving in, but deliberately waited several years before undergoing major renovations. ‘We waited to renovate for five years, to ensure we were really certain about what we wanted to change and achieve, and to make sure it still felt like home at the end of all the work,’ says Phoebe.
Architect Lucy Bowen was engaged to design the renovation, including the extension containing the rumpus room and office. ‘The existing living, dining and kitchen area were also redesigned with a new life and style,’ says Phoebe. New materials and textures were introduced to create a relaxed environment suitable for the young family, and a pool was also added in the backyard.
Lucy’s design plays on the home’s existing features, adding further character in the form of raised skirting, indented shelving, and retaining plenty of wall space for art. Many paintings are by Phoebe herself, and whenever a piece is sold, she creates a new one to hang in its place! ‘It wasn’t a conscious thing, but we ended up with a house that has almost a gallery feel about it,’ she says.
Giving the home its Santorini-esque aesthetic is the use of natural textures such as rattan, concrete, travertine, and of course, the stark white walls with a pale green trim on the doors and rear exterior. Nearly all the paint colours were personally mixed by Phoebe, who did all the interior decorating, and spent plenty of time ensuring the pale green in particular was perfect! ‘I was very careful not to have a green that was too minty or too yellow, so there were many tests done,’ she says. ‘The builders thought we were mad I think!’
Renovations of this home are now complete, but there is one thing that hasn’t changed. Standing in the house today, Phoebe says the home still emits that same distinct feeling she experienced on the very first inspection. ‘I love houses that have a good energy – where you can relax and feel at home, rather than something too formal or precious,’ she says. ‘We are so happy we haven’t lost that feeling that we got the first time we came here.’

My husband and I met at high school. I was new to the town, and we were introduced through my family. It had been love at first sight, very cute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For our marriage, I needed a traditional Old World vintage Gatsby feel. I had to be surrounded by blossoms, I wanted tender pinks, lavenders, and whites along with accents of gold. Love Bird Weddings and Mondo Flowers worked in creating a classic elegance that is captured in Calli B Photography’s pictures of the day. I had my heart set on peonies however, as it happens, they have been out of year! However, my florist had ordered peonies to be imported as a particular surprise on the wedding day from Paris! From the easy floral styling (blossoms were everywhere, my one quite insistent request) along the aisle, into the fantastic rose and timber arbour that surrounded us, to the glass house mountains away in the distance, the air enabled us to say “I do”s at the most romantic manner. Our day has been highlighted by design thoughts, thought around a couple of years of preparation, right down to the reddish gumboots I wore to our place shots. (It had rained that afternoon, and I was not denying my Louboutins; also, it showed off my country bumpkin upbringing in perfect humour.)

Which were your favourite or most memorable elements of your wedding day?
There were a lot of very special moments, created by our awesome team of suppliers and our amazing family, however I feel that the quiet moments with my family members and friends getting ready, my husband and me standing at the altar at a bubble of love, and our grandparents being a large part of the party were my most cherished moments. We unfortunately misplaced my husband’s Nanna lately, so that these minutes shared with our loved ones are very cherished. We loved ones that had passed and had the room, and it added our day and a touch that is lovely.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Is there something that  you would have done otherwise?
Nothing, except making the day longer! It had been the wedding and ran without a glitch because of our carefully chosen and highly recommended team of suppliers, which I cannot recommend since they really make. Additionally, a special mention to my family that went above and beyond for us the entire day was great.
Do you have some advice for future brides?
Remain true to what you as a couple want. Everybody has opinions, as it’s daily and if they are are valid, listen to advice but do not live by it. Don’t lie about the photographer! Above all, write a list of what’s been most important for you for your own wedding in your own experiences as a guest in others, stick to that listing, and hope your suppliers, as it’s their job to bring it all together for you daily. Let go of the reins per week really let down your hair, because trust me when I tell you that it’s over before you know it and spend time with your family and friends. Really adopt and appreciate every moment, including the lead up to it.

The Steel Woods – Straw in the Wind
Southern rock often goes overlooked in mainstream or music criticism circles, which is why bands like The Steel Woods will probably never have the widespread followings they deserve. Bands of this ilk either get lumped in with country (and subsequently written off by people who don’t like country) or compared endlessly to Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers Band, as if no southern rock bands have existed since. But the past few years have been nothing but healthy for southern rock, bringing great albums from new artists (A Thousand Horses, Whiskey Myers, Cadillac Three, Blackberry Smoke) and old standbys alike (the ever-reliable Drive By Truckers). Even Chris Stapleton has more than a little bit of the southern rock sound in his DNA. The Steel Woods add their name to that list with their stellar debut album, the recently-released Straw in the Wind. Blending influences from half a dozen genres—including blues, gospel, down-home country, rock ‘n’ roll, and even a little dash of metal—The Steel Woods sound more seasoned, versatile, and assured on this sprawling 13-song collection than you would normally expect from a debut act. (Though they do have a previous four-song EP under their belt.) The band’s wheelhouse is dark, atmospheric rock ‘n’ roll, like the slow-burning opener “Axe” or the gospel-tinged “Let the Rain Come Down,” a song that appeared in a more acoustic-oriented arrangement on last year’s debut album from singer/songwriter Brent Cobb. Foreboding and thrilling, these songs carry an almost apocalyptic glint to them, which makes for a hell of a lot of fun. However, despite their southern rock leanings, The Steel Woods also have the hooks and songs on this record to potentially make a splash as a mainstream-leaning country band. Two years ago, A Thousand Horses—with the assistance of super-producer Dave Cobb behind the boards—notched a number one country hit with their aching, melodic power ballad “Smoke.” Their debut album, Southernality, blended sheeny country music with gritty southern rock in such a way that they found mainstream traction where many louder and more boisterous southern rock acts missed it. The Steel Woods, to be fair, are darker and more complex than A Thousand Horses. That much is evident from hard-rock-influenced tracks like “Better in the Fall” and “Hole in the Sky,” or from the rollicking honky-tonk murder tale of “Della Jane’s Heart”—a song that twists the usual “murder ballad” narrative by having the woman put the man in the ground for a change. But buried in the heart of this album are four or five songs that do melodic country rock as well as just about any band working today. If there’s a “Smoke” in the bunch, it’s “If I’m Gonna Love You,” an acoustic-led anthem inexplicably buried in the track eight position. In the 1990s, the big radiant hook and the ripping guitar solo would have slotted this track right in between Counting Crows and Sister Hazel on the mainstream rock radio dial. Nowadays, songs like this don’t have a prayer of touching rock or pop radio, but “If I’m Gonna Love You” could easily find some life on the country side of the dial. 1990s Counting Crows is also a fair point of comparison for “Uncle Lloyd,” another of the more country-leaning tracks from Straw in the Wind. Like the best southern rock, this track cultivates a feeling of time, place, and character that is very real. “He was not my father’s brother/But he wished that he could be/Told us kids to call him uncle/We would be his family/He had a wife and kids in Fresno/The youngest one was 24/Daddy brought him into our house/They didn’t want him anymore.” In the space of a verse, frontman Wes Bayliss sets the stage for a bittersweet story—one of love and newfound family connection on one side and heartbreak and the loss of a family on the other. The other big gem is “If We Never Go,” which plays the “escapist anthem” role for this record. Just about every country-leaning album will have a song in that category, but “If We Never Go” feels unique, thanks to the details in the lyrics and the contemplative ache of the melody. The song plays out as one side of a conversation between a boy and a girl, as the guy tries to convince the girl to run away with him. It’s a classic Springsteen ideal, but the song doesn’t flub on the storytelling just because we know exactly what kind of song we’re getting. “Kiss your daddy bye, he raised his daughter well/If we don’t leave right now, Atlanta will be hell/It’s too dang bad your mom can’t come out for a hug/But you know how she gets with that broomstick on that rug,” Bayliss sings in the first verse. And in the second verse, he adds “I’ve been mowing lawns since 1998/I’ve finally saved enough, let’s bust out of this gate.” These details add nuance, yearning, and urgency to the song, while Bayliss’s vocals, steeped in wistfulness, and some evocative guitarwork from Jason “Rowdy” Cook, round out the bittersweet edges. With a lot of talent for a lot of different types of songs, The Steel Woods have the potential to make some truly masterful records in the future. Whether they go further in the country direction, go all-in on their blistering southern rock roots, or continue to mix the two into a unique palette of sound, they’ve clearly got a lot to offer as a band. That’s a major testament to the strength of the playing and songwriting on Straw in the Wind, because few debut albums from the last few years have offered such a thorough display of promise, or hinted at so many intriguing directions. Don’t let these guys become the best-kept secret of 2017. --- Please consider supporting us so we can keep bringing you stories like this one. ◎ https://chorus.fm/review/the-steel-woods-straw-in-the-wind/

Modernist homes in Melbourne’s outer east have become a particularly hot commodity in recent years, and Anna Byrnes has snapped up one of the best. This 1965 house was designed by John Hipwell, an architect who designed many properties in the Warrandyte area, and it remained in the hands of the original owner until last year.
When Anna and her children moved in, the house required some attention, having been left vacant for some time after the former owner went into an aged care home. ‘It had not been lived in for a number of years, so a lot of work was needed to breathe warmth back into it,’ says Anna. The largest task was updating the original bathroom, which was gutted and remodelled on a ‘crazy’ six week deadline. ‘It was redesigned to flow, increase functionality and add aesthetic appeal. I decided on terrazzo tiles to give the room a combined feel of today’s design with a touch of the modernist era,’ says Anna.
Being the owner of styling business Styling Spaces, Anna has placed her individual style on the home, but many of the original features remain. Among highlights are the timber clad walls and floor-to-ceiling windows running the length of the house, creating an indoor-outdoor living space. ‘It’s quite modest, yet it stands on its feet and demands your attention as soon as you walk through the door,’ is how Anna describes the home. ‘Since adding my own stamp, we can now see our life here and how the home represents our journey for the future.’
Another feature that remains is the 1960s oven (a very expensive, high-tech purchase at the time!), which Anna has nicknamed ‘The NASA Oven.’ ‘I was apprehensive about the usability and practicality as it takes up a fifth of the kitchen! I have now embraced it and have fun cooking with it,’ Anna says. The family plan on extending the home in the coming years, but for now it provides enough room for everything they need.
Anna’s bedroom is her personal retreat, enhanced by a recent forest green paint job on both the walls and ceiling, which creates the feeling of a cocoon. ‘The contrast of the paint colour with the timber panelling, the Oregon timber sliding doors and windows gives the room so much depth, character and richness,’ she says. ‘It captures the true essence of what the home means to me, and there’s no place I’d rather be when the night invites me to rejuvenate.’
On top of this being such a beautifully designed home, it’s also located on a huge bush-like block just 100 metres from the banks of the Yarra River.  ‘I feel this is our own private retreat where we can remove ourselves from the daily grind and reconnect with nature,’ says Anna. From the front door, the family can walk through their block to their very own sandy swimming hole in just three minutes. ‘Having the water and bush, our two greatest loves, is a gift from mother nature,’ says Anna. ‘The peace of the running river is heard from our balcony. This is our haven.’
