tears streamed down her face as she burst through the front door of her house, tossing her bag aside as she hurried up the stairs, drawing attention from her brother and his friend who lounged in the living room. “y/n?” her brother called, quickly pushing away from the couch to follow her. the slam of her bedroom door was enough to have rafe following quickly, exchanging concerned glances with his friend.
ignoring the calls, y/n hurled herself into the comfort of her bed after locking the door, sinking into the sheets which would soon be coated with her wet tears.
“go away!” she yelled hysterically as her brothers knocks echoed through the room. “what happened y/n?” he tried again, his voice more tentative this time. “oscar please just go away!”
sighing, he leant back against the door, tilting his head at rafe, causing his friends brows to furrow.
“what?” he asked, his heart sinking as the sounds of her muffled sobs escaped through the crack of the door. “you try” oscar stated, ushering him closer to the door. “me?”
“yeah man, she’s got a thing for you..” he muttered, shaking his head as he started back towards the stairs, leaving rafe to attempt to draw her out. before he could argue back, oscar had disappeared downstairs, prompting rafe to turn back to the closed door, inhaling deeply.
despite the situation, he couldn’t control the small flutter in his stomach, his friends words circling his mind like a strangely-enjoyable migraine. “hey, y/n?” he called, leaning closer to the door.
the sound of his soothing, raspy voice had her head peeking out of the covers, quickly shuffling to the edge of the bed. “rafe?” she croaked, awaiting a response.
“yeah, it’s me. can i come in?” he asked carefully, his ring clad hand hovering over the handle as he heard movement on the other side, closing in on the door.
she didn’t answer, instead jumping up to unlock the door slowly, cracking it slightly.
his stomach churned and anger bubbles in his veins at the sight of mascara smears running down her flushed cheeks as her timid frame quivered behind the door. avoiding his gaze, she opened the door just enough for him to slide through before quickly locking it again.
turning back to the bed, she crawled under the sheets again, this time leaving room for him to slot in beside her.
making himself comfortable, he sat up fully against the headboard and opened his arm for her, ushering her to cuddle in. “c’mere, tell me what happened” he muttered, placing his hand gentle on her arm while he rubbed soft circles into her exposed skin.
“i- i went on a date..” she started, prompting rafe to divert his gaze, wincing at the thought. “and i- i thought he was a nice guy! he picked me up, and we went for a drive, and then- then suddenly he stops in the middle of some sketchy parking lot, and starts saying a bunch of creepy shit” she rambled, struggling to catch her breath.
“shh, can you take a deep breath for me?” he whispered, craning his neck to meet her eyes, mimicking the deep breath himself, inciting her to do the same.
nodding frantically she followed his movements, breathing through her nose and out of her mouth, their eyes never leaving one another’s.
“did he hurt you?” rafe questioned, his voice unnervingly cool. “no- no he didn’t, i hopped out as soon is it started to get scary..” she whispered. “i walked back..”
“you walked? why didn’t you call?” he asked, his forehead creasing in concern once again. to answer his question, she grabbed her phone from beside her, holding down the power button to show him the black screen. “it was dead..”
