shakespeare’s sonnet 18 is giving me a headache and not bc i don’t understand it, but bc i understand it too much and, to make it fit the topic im pursuing, i have to take up a stance that i don’t actually believe in and it feels Wrong to do that and also my professor will Absolutely see through my bullshit

#like if im writing an essay abt the objectification of women in victorian sonnets and how female poets subvert that #HOW can i include sonnet 18 which is heavily theorized to be abt a man?#bc not only does that not fit my topic #but in my opinion a man writing a love poem for another man can be an essay in itself!#and it feels wrong to go abt it in a ''this is objectifying way'' bc now knowing that shakespeare was most likely writing abt a man #/really/ changes how i see the poem #bc i dont know Much abt sexuality in the victorian period but im gonna hazard a guess that same-sex relationships were not super common #and thus sonnet 18 being abt immortalizing love and beauty takes on a different tone #BUT to go abt it in a gender neutral way feels like im ignoring such an important part of the sonnet!!!#so basically im stuck between ''do i ignore a part that is important to me or do i cut it''#bc im nervous that cutting the sonnet/shakespeare out completely will be a detriment to my essay #but also this sonnet is making it hard to continue on #so like??? what im saying is that im waiting for my prof to get back to me so i can rant all these questions to him omfg #god rip this professor this is the first semester he's had me as a student #and im doing thesis with him next semester #and he's gonna quickly learn that im good at what i do (at least i like to think so) but i can go off like it's fucking nothing
