THE 13 BOOKS I READ IN 2023 IN ORDER FROM BEST TO WORST + THE PROTAGONIST'S SUPERLATIVE. PART 1.

NOTE: this ranking is entirely based on how much i enjoyed the thing and not necessarily on anything quantifiable or concrete. except for 1 and 12 those are just i think empirically true. also, this got very very hard between 2-8 and i enjoyed everything above 10 like, immensely. that said:

1. The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. fucking gorgeous book. the writing was incredible, it made me feel like i needed to write right now right now right now or i was going to die and also why would i ever write again when i didn't write this. made me REEL several times and need to put it down and process it. i need to read it again and again. so much in there about the structure of story and fairytales and roles within a story and just. augh. man. i have at least a thousand words worth of highlights of quotes that make me completely insane. i want to write a dissertation on the interactions of amalthea and lír.

Protagonist: Amalthea/The Unicorn. Best Gender Moments And Unmatched Aro Vibes.

2. Blackcurrant Fool by Victoria Goddard. someone designed these books in a lab just to kill specifically me. i'm so thrilled i'm like, mad about it. this is book four in the series and included some MASSIVELY fun payoffs for some background references and foreshadowing that had been building for a while. some of my favourite tropes on this here earth are contained in this book and they make me insane in their execution. beloved. i kept having to put my face in my hands and shriek. like. literally. i liveblogged the last like ~30% of the book to several people. in detail.

Protagonist: Jemis Greenwing. Most Likely To Respond To A Given Situation With Both The Most Sincerely Heartfelt And Most Dramatic Option Possible And Then Insist That This Was The Obvious And Logical Thing To Do.

3. Bee Sting Cake by Victoria Goddard. some really excellent introductions to characters and concepts in here. did a good job as the second book in the series to continue keeping things interesting while maintaining and expanding on what was good about the first one, introducing new elements and making them play well with the established dynamics and situation. some really fun exploration of 'what if your two favourite people met each other and how would that go'. some delightful stuff about bees also which gets me in my feelings and the pov character has a good cry a couple times which he damn well deserves at this point.

Protagonist: (since there are two, i'm alternating for this series' superlatives) Peregrine Dart. Best At Being Totally And Completely Fine (Lying).

4. Stargazy Pie by Victoria Goddard. YES. I LIKED THESE BOOKS A LOT OKAY. THREE OF THEM IN A ROW. WHAT OF IT. very fun introduction to a series, it was a great first book. it delivered its worldbuilding in my favourite way for a fantasy series to do so, which is to just sort of drop me right in and explain as we go in a naturalistic kind of way. it meant i had to accept i just didn't know what was going on several times but that was fine. excellent combo of silly and serious and the characters are just. so charming and i'm so so fond of them. also i love a really stuffy strict distant society. bc then i'm like OHO TIME TO BREAK THESE RULES!!!

Protagonist: Jemis Greenwing. Most Likely To Have Everything Happen To Him So Much And All At Once.

5. By Force Alone by Lavie Tidhar. this book would probably have been ranked higher if it weren't for all the Someone's Got Their Dick Out. which is fine, go for it, but it felt like all the like. someone is getting their guts stabbed out and someone else is fuckin every other page is mostly a thematic thing that is supposed to drive home how gritty and grimy the narrative is. which y'know. not my bag. i like a gritty and grimy narrative but dude we know. that said it was extremely fun except for that, and i liked the way the characters were described a lot. they were not good people and it was deliberate and compelling. it was a lot to process all at once and i wish i'd slowed down with it - the last fourth of the book particularly hit me like a train. special shoutout to everything this book did with pelinore and the questing beast.

Protagonist: Arthur Pendragon. Most Doomed By The Narrative.

And Pac stole the tvs when they were leaving that place where they found Kameto

Oh yeah, and Forever somehow got along into the ride to go to Bagi's secret base

And there was Pac who was: "I don't like neither"

(And right now Bagi is trying to get rid of a considerable amount of milk and I don't even know where it come from

She's going to be lactose intolerant after drinking that amount of milk)

Now, stopping my rambling for a moment, do you have any Favela six + Richas(and perhaps the honorary brazilians) headcanons?

my personal hc for q!cellbit is that he’s a phantom OR maybe just a silly human who’s incredibly deranged… (i don’t want him to be a catboy as much as i think it fits him bc i remember cc!cellbit saying he isn’t super fond of it. idc that people do this is just a me thing aknfjhjsn)

mayhaps he and bagi are both humans…

q!mike to me is a creeper and he is terrified of cats (cellbit) and will make the creeper hissing sound (like about to explode) when under a lot of stress

he and pac have matching earrings :)) like they have two sets of earrings one green and one blue but they both share it? like pac has one green and one blue earring!! so mike has the other pair to the set

qforever is trans (to me) and a werewolf and you can’t convince me otherwise. he is so dogboy coded it’s fucking insane he is a werewolf and you can’t convince me otherwise

qpac is not human but i don’t know what he is specially… haven’t come up with it yet… i just know he can’t be human…

oh and qfelps ofc is a magma cube <33 my fav ever

i think that before the insaneduo divorce arc qforever would go to the order base very often and just fall asleep in there while cellbit worked

i remember seeing a clip of him saying the office and the music cellbit played there was very comforting to him so he often goes there if he can’t sleep at night and curls up on the couch falling asleep to the sound of cellbit typing away on his keyboard u-u

i feel like richas has multiple bedroom everywhere. like all his parents have their own homes and he can sleep there so every mornign all the brazilians will text each other like “who had richas? who’s taking care of him today?” you know??

when richas meets bagi i believe strongly that he would steal one of her extra hats and wear it around + brag to everyone like he has SO MANY DADS and also TWO MOMS!! which is more moms then most of the eggs u-u he continues to remain unmatched in “having the most parents” department

i think after richas helped forever build the ocean (i’m sorry i don’t remember the name) with forever he was sort of sick of sand/beaches in general for a while MKANJHCIJLAM he shakes his head and sand is flying EVERYWHERE

richas is also wearing his jersey backwards and no one has yet to make a comment about it to him

richas would carry around markers/pens with him at all times and when he’s bored he’d doodle on his arms or legs + anyone he’s with who lets him (his favorite person to draw on is forever only because forever acts super annoyed about it and chases him around)

i like the idea of all the streamers chats taking the form of an animal or something like that so i don’t think it’s uncommon to see a bunch of diff animals around the favela or richas just hanging out with one another :))

i think it might be canon that qfelps can marry people?? like that job?? he can officiate weddings?? if it’s not them i’m sorry fanon got to me but he totally officiated qinsaneduos wedding on that boat they crashed

qfelps can NOT drive a boat he can’t even GO IN WATER!! WHY WOULD THEY LET HIM DRIVE THE BOAT!! HIS WHIMSY WAS TOO GREAT!!

it's exactly 4am!!

blurry ass shot but i woke up, saw jupiter and thought "yeah definitely too early". but then i get up a bit more and i saw the moon right below it and i thought pretty!!!

skies've been too cloudy to stargaze for the past month. it's actually completely obscured the moon and jupiter right now so i'm glad i could get a shot in even though it was shitty lmao. it was real pretty and nice and fuckin mars was there with aldebaran and everything (if u squint u see them in the photo above jupiter)

dream time!!! on a scale of 10, dreams were a 7-8 today depending on which. one of them featured daniil which was funny so ill relay it:

premise was that i was the player character in what my brain helpfully supplied as some sort prequel game for patho. a nurse (i was talking to my nurse friend before sleeping and she was ranting abt phlebotomy or smth so lmao)

it mightve been set in a plague but basically there was some sort of epidemic and "i" tended to the in patients at an hospital (is it a hospital?? do people pronounce the h in hospital in english?) where most of everyone was sick with something really bad and barely curable.

anyways i was walking around doing my rounds. then i come over to this room with patients and it's literally like a closet with long shelves and everything but instead of supplies, the patients were crammed in there like a morgue or a line of standing coffins.

lo and behold i see daniil in all his p1 model glory. i pull him out. hes distressed so i tell him hes actually starting to get better (he was not) and that soon he'll be discharged after he's well again. i pat his head lovably and grow fond like i was comforting a cute puppy (i have 6 dogs) and i think about shoving him in the broom closet of doom again.

i think that was the part where i was like "lmao wtf is this dream rn" so my brain helpfully supplied some lore then when i was done "remembering" the setting above, the scene already shifted.

daniil was, once again, in distress. he was a lot like an asylum patient. like someone who lost their sense of self and was struggling very hard to claw at an identity of any sort that they might have had in the past. he was trying to use the phone to make a call. he struggles trying to recall a number but then eventually gets one right.

it rings and bc dream me really wanted to listen in on the conversation like a chronic gossip, i manage to "convince" him (dream coercion) to let me answer the phone.

it was his mum!! daniil dankovsky's mother 大草 lmao. i told her i was from the hospital, calling about daniil and she was like "oh... he's dead, isn't he?" and i told her that no he's fine actually and was to be dismissed very soon (i was lying).

while this was happening, i was trying my best to let daniil hear the conversation too but i didn't know how to put the telephone on speaker (bc fr idk how to put telephones on speaker irl. i think our telephone company doesnt provide speaker buttons????? idk im going insane) so i was just struggling, trying to put the receiver speaker in between us before giving up

i heard the tail end of her going on about needing "dr. burakh" to fix her up and my brain hit me with another dose of setting details at that point.

(artemy's a doctor/surgeon in the hospital and hes handling daniil's treatment too)

i laugh and tell her that there's no need to get artemy bc soon her son'll be home to fix her up instead.

at that point, i was urged to cut the call because someone came up to me, another telephone in hand, and said "you know this is a home line right?" (implying anyone could listen in)

i was too lazy to reply and continue the dream so i just woke up after that lol.

but yeah good morning yippee!! clean start for another day!!! cant wait to seize it, hope everyone does too!!!
