i bought a flat this week.

was off work sick last thursday/friday with what turned out to be the beginnings of a bad cold but at the time i was just like 'oh no why am i so tired is this the return of the Mystery Fatigue'

let's backtrack for a second!! back when i had the offer accepted on my flat my solicitor suggested october 6th as a move in date and i was like sure that works (this was around the beginning of september). then i didn't hear anything from them for many days and then i started getting major dry eye problems that became all consuming so i didn't get around to chasing them.

anyway!! tuesday last week i get an email from my solicitor like 'hi are you still able to complete friday' and i did not have the headspace to deal with it so i didn't reply

Wednesday my solicitor calls like 'hi. we need to know if you want to complete friday'. i'm like 'actually i'm really not feeling well this week, could we postpone'. she calls back a few minutes later like 'they cannot postone'. at this point i'm still thinking that if i get a decent night's sleep i'll feel better so i tell her i'll deal with it in the morning.

Thursday i feel spectacularly worse. have to get up to go to an appointment with my optometrist. almost start crying in their office bcos i'm just so exhausted. (he seemed weirdly unfazed by this?? looking back i wonder if he thought my eyes were hurting or something and didn't realise that i was holding back tears gfhglj) call out sick from work.

plan is to take a nap and then look at the documents my solicitor sent over but she calls me again like 'hi. sorry to bother you i know you're sick but can we complete today' so i'm like ah shit ig we're doing this now. please walk me through exactly what you need me to do here. 'we just need you to send us the money'. yeah i can do that. i've never made a payment this big before tho.

(i'm buying w money inherited from my mother so even for a flat purchase it's an unusually large amount of money)

'oh yeah you won't be able to that online. *pause* are you well enough to go to the bank?' i am tired enough that going to the bank will suck but not so sick i cannot go to the bank.

i had gone fully back to bed. spurred on by sudden wave of adrenaline, get out of bed and dressed and get the bus into town to the bank.

my bank closes at 3pm weekdays and by the time i get that it's about 1:45. explain the situation. turns out that to make a payment this big you need a sit-down meeting with a member of staff and they are booked solid till 3. 'can you come back tomorrow at 9:30 when we open' *dying inside* yes. i can come back tomorrow at 9:30.

go home. remember that i'd told my manager that i'd call her at 9 to let her know if i'm going to be working (i will defo not be working & she knows this) which will be tricky if i have to leave at 9 to go to the bank. have a pretty interminable IM conversation via microsoft teams about this wherein i suggest i message her first thing and call a bit later and she isn't going for it. eventually agree to call at 9 just so i can end the conversation and go to sleep.

Friday morning end up calling my manager from the bus. get to bank. whole thing takes a full 30 minutes so yeah i can see why they couldn't fit me in thursday afternoon ghfdljkfhdj. i'm so so tired. they have to go over a whole fraud prevention statement with you. 'you should be aware that scammers can pretend to be your solicitor'. me, exhausted: okay what if just this one time. a scammer is pretending to be my solicitor.

make the payment. go home to sleep finally.

later in the afternoon get another call from the solicitor. 'hi we have the keys you can come get them whenever'. oh yeah i'd been so caught up in trying to get them the money i'd kinda forgotten about. actually getting the flat.

(side note at no point was i planning to move in on 'moving day', an advantage of being a first time buyer is that i don't have to & i want to redecorate the place which is easier while it's empty)

initially say i'll come in next week but then realise that ideally next week i'll be back at work (i am not but anyway) so i might as well go now. it's pushing 4pm so will need to head out ASAP.

eyes are very dry and itchy from sleeping all day but fortunately i just (on a recommendation from my optometrist) bought a thing called a facial sauna which is a very weird contraption but does work extremely quickly.

pack my eye drops and also a peanut butter sandwich to eat in my new flat (why not) and go get the keys.

arrive at the flat. on inspection realise that the envelope i've been given seems to contain the most random assortment of loose keys. eventually identify an actual set of keys.

put my key in the lock of the flat door. abruptly hear a cat meowing, somewhere very close by.

previous owner had cats (plural) (i know this bcos i saw them when i was viewing the place). have a sudden moment of panic that i've somehow wildly misunderstood the whole situation and that she and her cats are still in residence.

look down. there is a very large, very fluffy white cat standing next to me, looking up at me as if expecting to be let in.

'you can't come in. this is my house.'

make my first mistake: think that if i open the door i will be able to prevent the cat from entering.

cat goes straight on into my flat.

i'm now pursuing the cat from room to room saying 'hey! hey you can't be in here! this is my house!'. the cat doesn't give a shit for obvious reasons (it is a cat)

i might have considered just shooing the cat outside and shutting the door but have arrived at an IMO not unreasonable concern. cat seemed very determined to enter this flat in particular and is now roaming around as if looking for something. previous owner had multiple cats and moved out AFAIK today. i have heard stories about people accidentally leaving cats behind when they move.

at this point it's 4:55 on a Friday. call my solicitor and explain the situation. ask if she could pass on a message to the seller's solicitor. unfortunately they have already closed for the week so it will have to wait till Monday but she will do her best.

decide the next course of action is to see if the cat has any ID. the cat is wearing a harness & collar so might have a tag with an address. make my second mistake: pick the cat up.

the cat does not have any ID on the harness. the cat does NOT like being picked up. cat gets very squirmy and then begins scratching me. cat manages to break my skin through a hoodie.

i put the cat down. the cat hisses at me. this is very rude considering that it is in my house.

head across the landing to see if the people opposite are missing a cat or, failing that, know their neighbours well enough to recognise the cat. there's no answer.

however!! i hear a voice down in the stairwell that sounds like it could be someone calling out a cat's name. 'hi!! is someone down there looking for a cat?' no answer.

look down the stairwell. on the ground floor there is a very large fluffy brown cat wearing a harness. !!!!! that is my cat's friend!

retrieve the cat from my flat (fortunately it just follows me out) and head downstairs. am met partway up by the cat's owner.

'oh thank god is this your cat'. it is her cat. apparently she had opened her front door to let them out into the garden and it had wandered off. 'i just moved in today it came into my flat'.

she is very apologetic. cat is unrepetent.

go back inside. call my solicitor's office. 'hi was it you i spoke to just now about the cat' (I told 2 people about the cat) 'no i just answered the phone because it was ringing. what cat.' 'can you tell *solicitor's name* that i have found the cat's owner. she will know what you mean'.

problem solved!! time to eat my peanut butter sandwich. :)

Like thats exactly why i like boyd because he makes absolutely no sense, and despite him being a really good friend and boyfriend (when he lets himself be) with a strong moral compass, he isn't against doing things he deems evil or wrong if it's for his own benefit or the benefit of the ppl he loves (like him joining the agency even tho he said that his politics are really anti-US gov & agency in particular) he's like my mom wants me to do this, and i want to make her happy, because pleasing her is the only thing that brings me a tad bit of joy and connection in the world. And like as time goes on he views himself as moral in his judgements of the ppl around him and how they treat hsin and other ppl in general but its like... Boyd you still chose to join the agency, and you are still killing people for them. Like maybe you arent treating hsin like shit and you are building a friendship w ryan, you are still just as morally grey (or even flat out morally Wrong) as everyone else around you. And as time goes on, like in the interludes and fade, hsin and other ppl, including boyd, start to be like boyd isnt actually that morally righteous at all. Like in Luoyang after boyd tortures shaoqing and hsin is like this kid could fr just turn off his emotions again and become a merciless killer if he wanted. And hsin is like... Oh shit i actually have a stronger moral compass than him

And both kassian and hsin struggling w being lvl 10 agents bcos they are like the things ive done to other ppl like i am not innocent and boyd is like the things ppl have done to me of course i acted like that, of course ive killed and been violent. And of course this is partly because they have been agents for longer than boyd, and its not that boyd never has these feelings, its just he is so much better at dealing with them, and not letting his self esteem be permanently damaged by the fact that he has killed and tortured before. Like even after that scene in evenfall original when he is threatening warren andrews (?) Children and wife and talking about how the agency will kill and torture them he has no qualms with knowing how this agency he joined runs and gets ppl to comply.

Bcos the thing is (and someone can probably come back w the DnD alignment chart for these two) boyd is willing to do bad or 'evil' things if he has weighed that the benefit to him or his loved ones outweighs the cost, which hsin does as well, but boyd does it much easier, doesnt faulter even when he sees the negative consequences on others, and doesnt let it affect the way he views himself. Hsin, however, is willing to give up his life to do what is right (like saving the captive informant in the interludes and almost blowing himself up, saving Elizabeth from being attacked and being arrested, etc) in situations where boyd would not even register putting his life on the line. This isnt to say that boyd is completely evil, but his moral compass is just different from hsins, like there are times where he would come upon a situation and think "how can i help, without hurting myself" and other times he would see a situation hsin would intervene in and simply be like "its not my problem; there's nothing i can do".

BIOGRAPHY

dominic grew up in san francisco, california. his favorite thing growing up was hanging out at pier 39 and just watching the sea lions chill all day on top of the boards. regardless of the smell. he loved the fact that it didn’t rain or snow, the weather was just ideal. it allowed him to thrive when things were constant with minor changes.

dominic feels most at home by the ocean. he finds it peaceful since it’s calm and quiet besides the sounds of the water crashing together.

@ 15, dominic and the rest of the parkers moved over to NYC cos their dad got a job there and tb he hated it. 

he had to be the new kid, at a new school, in a new city but, dominic is the type of person to blend in so making a whole new life barely came with challenges. he was able to work a room, and he was smart to figure things out easily. 

he made a lot of friends, went to the randomest of parties, all while maintaining a high average in school and keeping A1 appearances.

FAMILY

since the parkers were well off, dominic didn’t have to work for anything when it came to getting things he wanted - but what he did have to work for was getting his father’s approval on almost every part of his life.

being one of the only two boys, there was a lot riding on them to do things. going to school, getting the best grades, making sure you’re always presentable - and bc dominic just wanted to please his dad, he did everything he could. he studied a lot, he did a lot of volunteer work and thankfully for him he liked to study, so studying a lot wasn’t a problem.

dominic rlly struggled being the middle child, but don’t get him wrong, he loves his siblings. believe it or not, he still loves his dad, and he’s a big time momma’s boy. 

even while his dad talks a lot of smack about him, dominic still attends family events, dinners and the works, to please his dad and so it wouldn’t be stressful on his mom. 

CAREER 

dominic is a nerd, a smartass. his grades were always high, especially when it came to liberal arts.

it wasn’t really his choice if he went into university, it was expected. dominic didn’t think much of it besides that he had to do it. 

he went to columbia university for law, and he got his degree in that, and he was doing his graduate legal studies until he got scouted by the New York Knicks.

he grew up with a lot of stress riding on his back, and being the middle child really sucked when you had to have as much of responsibility as the oldest, still be looked at as the younger sibling but at the same time having to take care of the youngest. 

what he did on his past time was run. whether it was around the block, or around the track, dominic found it peaceful just to be by himself where his heart rate went up to the point he couldn’t breathe and he’d fall onto the ground. years of doing so earned him a spot on the track + field team, and because he was good at it, his dad put him in on basketball teams since he was fast enough to make home runs - multiple times.

Basketball was never his first choice at anything, if he could, dominic would do track and field but as far as his dad was concerned, basketball was the better path between the two. so that’s what he did to please his dad. 

dropping out of columbia though, that was dominic’s choice. he figured, he already got his degree, his masters could be put on hold while he played basketball. 

it seemed like a good idea to him, but since then he has a pretty rocky relationship with his dad.

he was never meant to be the black sheep of the family. he was supposed to have this picture perfect image, probably be the next Barack Obama - but that didn’t work out. 

Being an athlete wasn’t the same as being an academic. it took a lot of work physically, and at the end of the games he was left with such a rush. it was a completely different kind of satisfaction.

PERSONAL LIFE

for once dominic didn’t have to worry about hitting the books or the next test. his main focus was basketball and keeping an image that was easier to maintain. this came with a lot of partying and a lot of - accidents.

one night, when he was too drunk to function, he woke up the next day in a random girl’s bed. not that that was anything special but it definitely was when he got a call saying she was pregnant. so 9 months later, aaliyah strawberry parker came into this world. she is currently 1 year and a few months, and that little babe added a light into dominic’s life. 

he was never prepared to be a dad DILF, but he’s a damn good one! he keeps his life separate when he’s with his daughter.

he’s not with his baby momma, but they have a solid relationship, sometimes rocky, sometimes not but y’know. it happens. 

so far, dominic hasn’t introduce aaliyah to any of his family members except maddison. it’s not a secret, it’s just something he doesn’t want to do considering the rocky relationship he has with his dad.

The bastard is more than likely in love with her but just can’t bring himself to confess or even admit it for that matter because he’s a little bitch. 

1. Okay, in all seriousness, he just doesn’t really know how to handle these kinds of emotions, as cliché as that sounds but it’s true. 

Since he never really had anyone who’s treated him with this much genuine kindness (tbh it’s almost overwhelming), he can’t help but be attached to her but at the same time, he’s afraid to get too close. It’s ironic considering that she’s one of the most comforting people to be around for him but his self-doubt gets in the way. 

He cares for her. He just wants her to be safe and happy. He has no doubt in his mind that she feels the same way towards him but beyond that? He has no idea. They’re friends but is there potential for something more than that? He honestly has no idea. 

He’d like to be more than just friends but there’s a lot of complications involved if they even get together in the first place. They’re already kind of on thin ice as it is. He’s worried about a lot of things and some of them aren’t necessarily unfounded either. 

Besides, it’s entirely up to her and what she wants in the end. 

Despite of all this, he wants to do his best to be there for her. That’s all he can do for her, since he just cares for her that much.

2. If they get together, in a specific verse or whatever, then I honestly think that they’d be super adorable and happy together, their long distance aside. 

Furthermore, since Jack is busy most of the time, he’d only really be able to see her in person a few times. They’d have a better chance of keeping in touch through technology. 

He’d have to tell her the truth about his life though. His past, his actual occupation. Why he’s even involved with Wilhelm and Hell in general to begin with. It’d be really difficult at first, but he trusts her more than anyone. 

It’s hard for Jack to trust people but with Horizon, he finds it a lot easier to do so, which is just another reason why he loves her. 

Of course, he wouldn’t just hide it from her. Even before he’d confess his feelings, Jack would probably try to break it to her as gently as possible that he’s not as good of a person as she thinks he is.

He’s not sure how she’d react and he honestly wouldn’t blame her if she wanted nothing to do with him after finding out what he’s done. A part of him would accept it but another part of him would probably would just wish that he could hide this from her forever, but he really can’t. He can’t lie to her.

Knowing Horizon though, I see her looking past all of that and accepting him for who he is, since Jack himself really does want to better himself.

I think they’d both help each other out in that regard, improving themselves to be better people but as far as Jack is convinced, Hora’s already perfect the way she is. :3rz

3. If they don’t get together, then Jack would accept it. That is to say if she ends up with someone else (most likely Giga) or if she rejects his confession or whatever. He can’t really enforce anything upon her, since he loves her and he’d let her go and still look out for her. 

No matter what happens, he’d still be super protective of her. Cares about her too much to the point where he’d probably end up getting lowkey distracted at times. 

Which is a problem in of itself, considering he’s got a lot of work to do but if anything, he’d try to motivate himself to work harder so that he isn’t slacking off.

I see him supporting her until the very end, until he inevitably dies because uh, I don’t actually know what kind of “ending” I have planned for Jack but it definitely involves something along the lines of a termination of his contract with Wil. >>;;; 

Until then though, no matter what, he’d just try to be with her as much as possible. Whether it be through idle chatter, going on a trip somewhere, or just doing absolutely nothing while sitting around in each other’s company. 

It’s the little things in life that make it really worthwhile for them.

The platform has a Task Management module which has mapped all the processes and tasks required to be done by the various parties in the chain..

This module provides the option to set up tasks, and the message centre automatically notifies the user of when certain tasks are due (like document submissions etc) and tracks the progress, updates or changes done to the tasks..

This is a very important tool to promote collaboration in a team-based environment as it allows the supervisor to assign tasks to specific users and allows them to have a birds view of the progress of the tasks..

Document Management

Documentation is the main cause of many delays in shipping causing many problems such as delayed delivery of goods, demurrage, detention, storage, loss of documents and even cargo abandonment..

If you are a BCO operating across multiple trade lanes, time zones with huge volumes, managing the various shipping and trade related documents could become a nightmare if proper systems are not used..

The document management module within Haven’s TMS seems to address this serious issue efficiently.. The module offers a simple drag and drop option from any of the integrated systems which saves the user a lot of time and space..

This module integrates with the Task Management module to allow the assigning of rules-based document tasks which ensure visibility of the document flow and assign accountability to the user..

When working in a team, there may be times where multiple users may be accessing the same documents and not using the latest version of a multi-access document could lead to issues..

The document management module not only allows the user to organize and share documents effortlessly, but it also has a document version management tool which ensures that the latest version is always used..

The module’s OCR (Optical Character Recognition) option allows for oft-repeated terms to be mapped so that it can be recognised and harmonised across the various providers using the platform and allows for maximum data extraction..

This saves data entry time and also mistakes that could happen during the process..

Since they have invested a lot of money in the system, I feel that Haven should have added an option to integrate with the carrier’s system to generate/print bills of lading from the TMS itself.. Hopefully this will be something that Haven will consider in the future..

Visibility

Visibility is one of the main factors that many customers especially BCOs look out for when it comes to their cargo movement.. Their production lines, assembly lines, manufacturing plants, business plans, all depend on this one crucial item in the shipping cycle..

The Haven system is said to integrate with the carriers’ and ship’s AIS systems to provide real-time status, updates and milestones of the shipments in a simple and easy to view graphical display..

Although this technology is not unique to the Haven TMS, because it is an integral part of an ocean freight shipment, it will add great value to the customer.. However, there could be some blind spots as the tracking technology is dependent on network coverage which may not be reliable at all times..

The system also provides delay and exception alerts automatically but of course, you have to be a registered and authorised user to view this..

As per Cunnion, “Having used the solution for over a year, I envision Haven as being the one stop shop for full freight visibility for our entire supply chain that encompasses air, road and rail freight.”

Freight Invoice Audit Platform

Freight invoices are often wrong due to incorrect surcharges billed, rate fluctuations, rate of exchange variations, and changing port pairs..

The time and effort required to check, audit, rectify, and recheck the volume of invoices generated for ocean freight is enormous, and so far, customers have had only 3 options available:

Use their own employees to rectify the anomalies – which often comes at the expense of compromising on new business development or maintenance

Outsource to a 3rd party and pay up to 2% of freight spend – which is an expensive enterprise, especially when costs are high in the current scenario

Do nothing and overpay

But with Haven’s FIAP, customers now have a 4th option.. The FIAP is simple to understand, easy to use, seamlessly integrates with many of the existing ERP systems, and can be customized to the unique needs of different businesses..

Using this module, BCOs can identify the root cause for discrepancies, initiate a dispute process with the defaulting party and ensure that the right payments are made within the specified time..

However, since the rates are already being managed within the TMS, this FIAP may not have much use for the customers who are managing this, unless it sold as a stand-alone product.. This module could be a good plugin to other customers if this is packaged and sold by itself..

Reporting

No matter which system you use and no matter the information you input into the system, if you are unable to extract the data from the system in an easy and meaningful way, it defeats the whole purpose of using the system..

The whole concept of Big Data and digitalisation is not just the systems being present, but the ultimate value that a customer can get out of the system..

Haven’s TMS comes with a strong Analytics base with several capabilities to provide detailed analysis to the customer based on the data input into the system..

Analysis like the use of selected trade lanes and the performance of the carriers selected on those trade lanes including their reliability and response times allows the TMS users the option to really understand the strengths and weaknesses of the service providers..

After all, your service to the industry and customers can only be as strong as your service provider and it is crucial for you to get a full understanding of the performance of your service provider..

Shipping is a dynamic industry and many factors such as weather, strikes, maritime disasters and the like, could cause delays to the movement of goods.. While some of this could be unavoidable, there are certain areas of the business which can be monitored for potential risks..

The TMS platform comes with a predictive risk analysis tool which warns the users about potential risks they face in terms of potential delays which could impact the production schedules of the customer or bring about additional costs like demurrage/detention..

This predictive tool assists the customer in improving their transportation efficiencies and avoiding such costs..

All the above features of this platform come packaged in an easy to access Customer Portal which allows you the option to access this platform anywhere and at any time..

  Conclusion

Customers, especially those with large volumes and complex supply chains like food producers or commodity traders require specialist systems to manage their varied supply chain requirements..

A key focus for them is integration.. They need systems that can do the work intuitively and efficiently to keep their shipments moving smoothly so that they can focus on their core areas which are global trading and sales..

Instead of throwing people and money at problems, Haven’s TMS has reimagined technology in a way that simplifies and streamlines the customer’s operations..

One of the downsides, however, is that the TMS is sold as an entire package which may not be affordable to all customers and in my opinion, Haven should consider selling it by module which could then benefit many different types of customers..

The system’s main success lies in the saving of many man-hours spent on endless paperwork, hours of coordination trying to identify the status of cargo, time spent in trying to understand and make sense of the various supplier invoices received and ensuring that everyone is on the same page when it comes to global shipments..

What IFP’s Charlie Cunnion said bears testimony to the easy on-boarding process and the simplicity of the platform..

With the Haven team, onboarding did not entail a technology session with buzzwords such as AI, ML & blockchain. It was functional and made sense in the way it fit our business needs..

Training has been minimal – the platform is intuitive – user experience is positive. Anyone who has bought anything through e-commerce can transact on the Haven platform.

The platform is very simple to use and bring everything we needed to one place.

BattleCON Unleashed Fanwork Showcase - Week 5

Hey everyone! Marco here with another fanwork showcase! We’re in our last few hours so we decided to update early. If you haven’t been featured yet, don’t worry! We’ll still be showing off the cool stuff you’ve done for a bit after the project is over!
