Day 12 of #28daychallenge during P2HA2. Theme: All Things Beautiful One of my favorite subjects to sketch is old rustic scenes / architecture. There’s just a charm to old places that intrigues me and draw me in. They make me wonder who had lived, worked, or played there, and what sort of things had happened. I first discovered this old police post a couple months back when my cycling buddy Yujin brought me to explore the Green Corridor. This place stands a stone’s throw from the end of the GC, called Spooner Road, between Kampong Bahru and Spottiswoode estate, just on the outskirts of Chinatown. This old, dilapidated (excuse the misspelling in the sketch) post looked completely out of place amidst some construction site and modern residential places. I knew I had to come back and capture it. And so I did yesterday, when I went on my National Day solo sketchride. I couldn’t find much info about this police post per se, but boy, did I get major chills down my spine when I read about the spooky history of Spooner Road (the green flats in the background). Turns out this was considered the most haunted neighborhood in Singapore! 😱😅 Historically speaking, those flats (built in the early ‘70s) used to be staff housing for Malaysians who worked at the now decommissioned KTM (M’sia-owner Tg Pagar Railway Station). Later residents who moved into the estate reported hearing eerie sounds of crying and spotting weird happenings, not just outside, but within the flats themselves. 😬😂 Good thing I was there at noon. 😂 Currently this old police post is kept up by an old man, whose belongings are seen strewn around the house. Didn’t get a chance to chat with him. Perhaps I might the next time I visit. Day 20 of #28daychallenge Theme: All Things Beautiful My piece from this morning at Labrador Park… our first outdoor sketch event in the last few months. So glad to see so many show up and having a ball! 🤗 Labrador Nature Reserve sits at the southwesterly coast of Singapore, and is a beautiful oasis amidst heartland housing estates to the north, and Sentosa island (super high-end real estate) to the southeast. The red structure to the right is a beacon to guide boats and yachts coming into the marina. The cement structure to the left is a decommissioned gunner bunker used all the way back in WWII. Labrador Park and Sentosa island (southern coasts) were lined with huge guns in bunkers just like this one, built by the English Armed Forces, ‘cos they had expected the Japanese Navy and Airforce to attack Singapore from the southern coasts, but the sneaky Japanese armed forces came from the north after also taking Malaysia. That is why Sentosa island used to be named Pulau Belakang Mati during the Japanese Occupation, which means “death from behind”. Day 15 of #28daychallenge during P2HA2. Theme: All Things Beautiful Added wash to a piece I did only the line work for during last Dec’s Sketchwalk at Raffles Marina. While the rest braved the hot sun and sketched out at the Boardwalk and Lighthouse, Mdm Tia, Tony, Terrez, James, Karen and I decided we preferred to sketch and eat in the shaded comfort of the RM Bistro. 😊 What a fun day out it was. Day 14 of #28daychallenge� during P2HA2. Theme: All Things Beautiful From last Friday afternoon, while waiting to see my urologist for suspected bladder cancer – I had peed blood (a lot) the night before, and ultrasound scans showed no stones and I didn’t feel pain, so doc feared it might be something more serious. Ended up having to do both a cystoscopy and an MRI of my middle section. Sketching gave me something to focus on and calmed my nerves as I waited for results. These flowers and tabletop sculpture were screaming to be sketched. Thankfully, results showed 2 stones (one in the kidney and another in the tube) that were playing hard to get with the ultrasound scope. (Running behind…) Theme: All Things Beautiful Sketched from memory / imagination: a scene too many Singaporeans have taken for granted (myself included) during normal times. It’s only when we can’t freely do it now that we appreciate what a simple joy and pleasure it is to be able to just pick anything we want from a hawker centre or kopitiam, sit down and just dig in, right there. Day 6 of #28daychallenge during P2HA2. Theme: All Things Beautiful My piece from this morning’s Sketchwalk. Was supposed to have headed out to sketch, but woke up to torrential rain in the west. So, stay at home and sketch based on two themes: 1. All Things Beautiful and 2. Something Patriotic (Or Home, Truly), the theme of our sketchwalk this morning. This is my work desk in my bedroom (no choice, not enough room to have a dedicated workspace). To the right is half of my work table, and to the left, a long cushion-turned-storage area. Most times of the year, it’s a mess. But it’s MY mess, and it’s beautiful (to me) in its own way. ✌🏼😁 It’s the view I see every single day, as I spent most of my day here due to WFH arrangements during this pandemic. It’s MySpace; the real one. Out the window is the gorgeous Ulu Pandan skyline. It was only this morning when I was looking for something Singapore-related that I realised the mini flag was there (have been since last year’s National Day). Day 26 of #28daychallenge Theme: All Things Beautiful Spent a Sunday morning hangin’ out with 3 lovely sketcher pals sketching @ CHIJMES. This place used to be teeming with live and activities during the weekends, but not today. There was hardly a soul apart from us, and the occasional passers-by. I can’t say I hate it, ‘cos there is a certain air of tranquility with the cessation of businesses and activities, kinda befitting a place that a long time ago used to be a convent.
