Long read: (nope I don't care if you like short captions) Mermaids: inevitably in the tale of Icarus and Daedalus, Icarus dies. At this point in the story I wanted to not just explore his descent and subsequent passing as an end but also as a metaphor for depression and the absence of empathy we have for self as a direct product of the genetic PTSD that Black/African/Afro Americans suffer through. I use "through" because historically we make it through, we defy the crucible and keep on. You hand me pig intestines, I plate chitterlings, you hand me trotters, gizzards and tongues, I beget Michelin stars, that is who we are as a people; resilient beyond imagination and will continue innovate past all #awardshowssowhite In my recontextualization I imagine Icarus in a dream state meeting a mermaid, within his dream he's in LA at the crossroads somewhere between Cahuenga and Vine this mermaid is giving him game on how to navigate the afterlife. All of the images I shot were taken days after I returned from doing @beatsnbeans in Addis. We staged the shot and I knew I wanted something ancient and culturally collaborative, I saw it; the beads of Akan, marigolds for death, a single Ethiopia coin to pay the ferryman (Greco/Roman mythology).
