“Thought I might find you in here.” There was a classroom that Beau and Cora frequented in the early days of their relationship, one that was rarely used and never checked during the lunch break. They used to sneak off to be unruly and obsessed with each other. He hadn’t thought of it at first, as he looked for her around the Cafeteria, but then he’d suddenly remembered it and came to find her. “I come bearing gifts.” He held up a paper bag stuffed with three cookies. “Bribed a lunch lady to give me some extras for you.” Bringing it towards her, he reached out, fingers brushing her cheek. “Are you okay?”

Showing up at Cora’s party like this? Well, to say it was a risk was an understatement. It had been a long, long summer and the beginning of their senior semester was spoiled by the consequences of Beau’s actions. The rest of the year sparkled out before him like the cobblestones in downtown on a rainy night, full of endless possibilities if he could somehow get her to forgive him. This was his last chance to make things right, to tell the girl he’d lost everything that he didn’t way back then. He wondered if she’d found the note he’d left on her windowsill a couple nights prior, if somehow she would be expecting him. A year ago, he’d been at this party by her side, but now he was striding in and trying to lay low as he moved through the throng of people. On his face was half a Frankenstein mask, concealing his identify as he looked for her. He found her under fairy lights and as her friends stepped away from her he approached. His heart pounded in his chest, nervous and desperate, ready to be thrown out the second she realised it was him. “Cora?” Hesitantly he lifted the mask, meeting her gaze. “I know you probably don’t wanna talk to me, but if you’d just... give me five minutes, alone. There are some things I need to say to you.”

Beau didn’t feel good about anything that he’d been doing that summer. None of his actions occurred without guilt attached to it, but in a way he felt damned if he did and damned if he didn’t. Though he had believed that Cora had made their breakup very clear to him, he still knew how it looked, him hanging around with Addie so soon after it happened. She was so sweet, always understanding of everything even though he new deep down he was taking advantage of that kindness. Still, she was so fun to be around, she helped him not think about everything happening with his parents, which was why even if he felt bad, he still found himself picking her up in a parking lot, inconspicuous as he always felt they needed to be. When she got into the car, he leaned over, giving her a kiss and trying to smile and ignore his own guilt. “Sorry we have to do this like this still. I know I said it could be different soon, but I keep hearing gossip.” He said idly as he pulled out of his spot and continued to drive.
