@pie_aerts // “After being on Instagram for 4 years I lost my appetite for creation and I started to notice that these ‘digital hunger games’ slowly pushed me away from who I really am as a photographer. On top of that, I realised that much of the work I’ve done so far has been of little significance. Conformity was killing my creativity. Purpose & meaning started to itch. Therefore, on March 1st 2018, 15 months ago, I boarded an adventure to rediscover what photography means to me. A journey that took me to places like Papua, Uganda, Patagonia and the Himalayas but most importantly, a journey to the very core of what it means to be a photographer in the 21st century. In times of environmental, social and political instability. On a planet that’s dying. I spoke to many people from lots of different backgrounds & spent significant time in nature. While doing so I discovered narratives that exceed far beyond the limits of Instagram. So I decided to step back for a while to create room to breathe, to think, to digest and to appreciate. As a result I started @because.people.matter to celebrate rediscovering what photography means to me. Guys, @pie_aerts with my third shot. When someone asks me why I take photos, I could come up with many answers like the value of beautiful memories, the play with light, or the desire to create frames that the viewer can be drawn into, but to be honest, there’s only 1 real reason for me. Connection. Real connection. Raw human emotion. Because in a world that’s so guarded and fearful, nothing is more beautiful than people that are willing to show their soul. To show you the simple, imperfect but mysterious nature of being human. And there’s something very strange and touching about that. Something I can’t get enough of. And that’s the reason why I’ll start a second account as of today. Full of real people. Full of connection. Full of stories gathered in 10+ years of travel. For only 1 reason.
