Bollywood Movies Part CCVI: The Mollywood Takeover Part XXXIX
Tumblr media
After being released from prison, Advait Thakur (Aditya Roy Kapur) begins anonymously calling Inspector Anjaney Agashe (Anil Kapoor) about murderers he will commit. As Agashe and his partner Michael Rodrigues (Kunal Khemu) follow Advait’s trail of bodies, the past between them, Advait’s victims, and Advait’s girlfriend Sara Nambiar (Disha Patani) is revealed.
Malang is a decent thriller that gives us enough to figure out the twists without making them too obvious. Advait and Sara’s romance is a bit drawn out and seems more like an advertisement for all the fun things you can do in and around Goa. Favorite songs are Ho Ja Mast Malang Tu and Phir Na Milen Kabhi. Neither song has subtitles
Tumblr media
Police officer Ayyappan Nair (Biju Menon) and rich boy Koshi Kuriyan (Prithviraj Sukumaran) begin a feud when Ayyappan arrests Koshi for possession of alchohol in dry area right before Christmas, setting off a chain of events leading to Koshi getting Ayyappan fired.
Ayyappanum Koshiyum is an okay film. I honestly didn’t enjoy it because I did not enjoy the escalation of the feud and the toxicity both main characters exude throughout the movie. Also my takeaway was that they’re both in the wrong, but I’m not sure that was the intended message. Favorite songs are Kalakkatha and Ariyathariyathe. Neither song has subtitles.
Tumblr media
Marriage minded Nikitha “Nikki” (Kalyani Priyadarshan) lives with her mother Neena (Shobana) in an apartment in Chennai. Their lives begin to change when Bibeesh  “Fraud” (Dulquer Salmaan), his brother Karthik (Sarvajith Santosh Sivan), and their guardian and soap actress Aakashavani (KPAC Lalitha) move in to their apartment complex and when reclusive neighbor Major Unnikrishnan (Suresh Gopi) begins going to anger management and interacting with people in the complex more.
Varane Avashyamund is a fun slice of life movie that really makes us connect with all of the characters. I liked the romance between Neena and Major Unnikrishnan because it felt mellow. The film had good pacing and didn’t drag at all even though it’s nearly 2.5 hours long  I especially enjoyed Nikki’s relationship with her prospective mother in law Dr. Sherly (Urvashi). Overall a good watch and very enjoyable. Favorite songs are Mullapoove, Muthunne Kannukalil, Nee Vaa En Aarumukha, Aadyamorilam, and Kuttikkurumba (transliterated Malayalam subtitles, no actual film footage). All songs except for the last one do not have subtitles.

Dulquer on the dream team of 'Varane Avashyamund'
Tumblr media
He completes eight years in the film industry; the Malayalam film industry to be precise. He is not just a star son, but has proved his mettle by acting in over 25 movies and producing three movies, most of them box office hits. A heartthrob in every sense, he handles every role with élan. DQ - as he is fondly known - has spread his magic to the Tamil, Telugu and Hindi film industries as well. In a telephone conversation with City Times ahead of the release of his latest production venture Varane Avashyamund, starring him alongside debutant Kalyani Priyadarshan, Suresh Gopi and Shobana, and directed by Anoop Sathyan, Dulquer Salmaan gets candid about movies, arranged marriages and more...
Tumblr media
dulquer salmaan✔@dulQuer Love. Life. Family. Relationships. Bringing together all these in one super special movie. Here is the trailer for #VaraneAvashyamund releasing on the 6th of Feb in the GCC and 7th Feb all across India. So excited!!! https://youtu.be/M3i-VGCY69c  YouTube ‎@YouTube2,1213:33 AM - Feb 1, 2020Twitter Ads info and privacy441 people are talking about this Varane Avashyamund is a movie literally bursting with highlights - directed by Sathyan Anthikad's son, Anoop; the leading lady is Lissy and Priyadarshan's daughter Kalyani and, of course, it stars you. How did you manage to put together this elite group? This is a dream cast, all credit to the director. He had this in his mind for some time. I was not on board initially. But he was sure about Suresh sir (Suresh Gopi) and Shobana. There was also a bit of confusion about the heroine. Wasn't Nazriya cast initially? Yes. There was some clash in dates and so she could not join the team. Then Kalyani came in; I came on board and things got fleshed out a little more. Are Suresh Gopi and Shobana present throughout the movie? (Laughs) Yes, they are! It's not just cameo roles. It's like a multiple narrative. They are coming together after 14 years and some narratives are similar to Manichithrathaazhu. There is lot of curiosity among fans regarding the movie. Expectations are rather high. Yes, but it's all very organic. I don't think it's gimmicky in any way. We have been correct in terms of casting. I am excited about the narratives, they are very interesting. The movie talks about arranged marriage. What is your take on this? I don't think you can put it down to just arranged marriages. I think the trailer did that, giving that sort of impression. Well, my take . (laughs) I don't think there is any right way in meeting the right person. Actually there is no particular way. These things just happen in life. It's great to see 'slice of life' movies which the audience can relate to. Is that a genre you are particularly comfortable with? I think it's important to me that I relate well to the role that I do. That could be the reason I get drawn to 'slice of life' movies. Believable roles. Even the books I read, I need to be able to relate to the book, the characters in the book. Overly commercial roles . well, they are not for me. I cannot do them. I don't think I will be convincing. Yes, I tend (to do) more realistic movies. You are the epitome of fashion, the suave male of Malayalam cinema. How do you maintain your 'style-factor'? That is not a conscious decision. I like clothes, it's something I liked from a very young age. I have an eye for good things. I don't know, style is something unique to people. But it's not just about clothes. It's about how you come across, the sophistication. That's not conscious. I have been noticing people, their styles. This is how I am, you know. You work hard for your movies and it is reflected in your success, not just in Malayalam, but in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu films, as well. Has the fact that you are Mammootty's son helped you or hindered you in any way? Maybe in the beginning it has helped me. You know, to get my portfolio right, that sort of thing. Beyond that it all depends on how you do, how hard you work. How you perform and how ardently your fans like you and accept you, that's what counts in the end if you need to survive. Does it irk you if your capabilities are taken for granted? (Laughs). No matter what, I have had to work hard, very hard. Otherwise you cannot stay on in the industry. But initially expectations would have been high... That would not be fair on any person when you are kind of comparing us to their 20 to 30 years of solid experience. You can't compare that to a new comer, it's just not fair. The success of a movie is more daunting when you produce one. Is it in anyway different from just being an actor? It's exciting. Yes, it's different, but thrilling. My initial intent in producing a movie was to be able to create. I needed to make a team of my own to start with. That took some time and I got together a good team. I did not want to make experienced people do all the work. I have ambitions. I want to be a regular content provider. It's about a group of youngsters getting together. It's an opportunity.  So that's bringing young blood into the Malayalam film industry. I love doing that. I think it's about providing opportunity. And in turn, I get great opportunities. But then again, let me tell you, it's not charity. It's something we should be doing for the industry. And, in return, I get to do what I love doing.  Has your degree in Business Management helped you when it came to production? I don't know. I am waiting for the results. I have done two movies earlier. But they were different. Each movie is a learning experience.  What excites you about acting? It's exciting to be a part of any project in any capacity, and the more roles you take up the more exciting it is. If you are an actor there are specific times to come in, and specific roles to do. But as a producer, you are involved full time. You play various roles. I just enjoy that. Are you looking at direction also? No. I don't want to take too much time out of my acting career. I enjoy acting.  Malayalam cinema is back on track with new-age movies telling real stories. Budgets do not seem to matter now. What is your take on big-budget movies in the present scenario? I think there is space for that also. People have the appetite for all kinds of movies. If you feed them with just one type of movie, like what you call new age movies, it may not go down well, may not always entertain them or get them excited. You have to constantly give them different genres. I don't believe the time has come for just real-life movies. There is space for all types of movies. I truly believe that. When the old school comes back, there is still a lot of excitement.  But don't you think young actors are getting more opportunities now? Yes, definitely. But then age does not matter in the Malayalam film industry. Everybody has work now. There are a lot of good movies; lot of scripting is happening. It's a great time now. It's not like there is a particular type of appeal, everybody is trying different types of cinema, different stories, different roles. There is so much happening.  Is this phenomenon only in Malayalam movies? Yes. We are coming out with good movies. It encourages artists when the content is good. A movie like Anjaam Pathiraa is essentially a thriller. The fact that there are numbers for such movies is very encouraging. And people are viewing it repeatedly though they know the thread, even though they know the mystery. The suspense is known, there is no shock value, but still people are watching it because it's a well made film. That predominantly has to do with Malayalam movies and its audience. You won't find it anywhere else. Be it Driving Licence, Anjaam Pathiraa, Kumblangi Nights, all these have numbers. That's Malayalam cinema for you. What is the major difference when you act in a Malayalam movie and a Hindi movie? Well, it really depends on the type of movie you are doing, the team you are working with. It's difficult to generalise the entire industry. I have been lucky to work with good teams trying to put out good work. Do you discuss your movies with your father? We both hear from directors all the time. Sometimes when I lock something or I kind of like an idea, yes, I discuss with him.  Would you take up only path-breaking cinema or would he encourage you to mix them with commercial cinema like he does? He does a mix. And he has been successful in that, that's his experience speaking, his talent. I will, maybe. But not now. Again, the movies we do have numbers, and then such movies become commercial movies. What is your criteria in selecting a movie? I generally go with my gut. It's like when you read a book, you know whether you like it or not. I know when I like something.  So, it's the script above the team? It's both. Sometimes it could be a great team but the script may not be up to the mark. Sometimes it could be a great script but the team does not deliver. So, it should be the right combination. Bollywood Movies Part CCXV: The Mollywood Takeover Part XLII
Tumblr media
Sudhakara Kurup (Dulquer Salmaan) evades capture for years after murdering Charlie (Tovino Thomas) in an attempt to fake his death to commit insurance fraud.
Kurup is based on Sukumara Kurup's murder of Chacko with the names changed slightly and with quite a bit of fictionalization, especially with regards to what happened after the murder. It's an interesting watch and well acted. Favorite songs are Pakaliravukal (English subtitles) and Mele Theera.
Tumblr media
Pavithran (Nivin Pauly) tries to appease his wife Haripriya (Grace Antony) by getting her a new pair of earrings, although he lies about their composition as they are gold-plated. He also takes her to a hotel in Munnar, where the (not actually) valuable earrings go missing.
Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham is very entertaining and silly. While the actual mystery involving the earrings is very compelling, the rest of antics by the various people at the hotel are fun. I really enjoyed it, especially Pavithran and Haripriya's conflict about her being a former soap star and him not yet breaking onto the screen. There are no songs.
Tumblr media
Inspired by the original Bunty and Babli, Kunal (Siddhant Chaturvedi) and Sonia (Sharvari Wagh) start a new crime spree as Bunty and Babli. Inspector Jatayu Singh (Pankaj Tripathi) is put on the case and turns to Vimmi (Rani Mukerji) and Rakesh (Saif Ali Khan) to help him catch the new Bunty and Babli.
Bunty aur Babli 2 is not a great follow up to the original. I did not mind Bunty's recast as Saif Ali Khan manages to make the role his own while still staying true to Abhishek Bachchan's performance in the first one. The story is not great and not all the actors are able to compensate for it. Favorite song is Dhik Chik (English Subtitles).

Bollywood Movies Part CCXIV: Not Bollywood, that's for sure
Tumblr media
J. Jayalithaa (Kangana Ranaut) becomes fellow actor M. J. Ramachandran's (Arvid Swamy) political protege, ultimately replacing him as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister after his death.
Thalaivii is a biopic about J. Jayalithaa that fictionalizes some details. It is similar to the second half of Iruvar, as that is also based on M. G. Ramachandran and Jayalithaa's relationship. I watched it in Tamil, even though it was also simultaneously filmed in Hindi. It was an interesting version of that period of Tamil Nadu politics, but it definitely leans into the melodrama. Favorite songs are Unthan Kangalil Ennadiyo, Tugalai Tugalai, and Kannum Kannum Pesa Pesa. None of the songs have subtitles.
Tumblr media
Pianist Ray (Prithviraj Sukumaran) witnesses the murder of former actor Uday Kumar (Shankar) but is unable to testify against those involved, Uday’s wife Simi (Mamta Mohandas) and her lover Inspector Dinesh (Unni Mukundan), without revealing that he isn’t actually blind.
Bhramam is the Malayalam remake of Andhadhun. As a remake, it's decent. The actors are all fantastic in their roles and the script is well localized. However, it is lackluster in the music, which was a huge part of the original. Favorite songs are Munthiripoovo and Lokam - Who Wants it? Neither song has subtitles.
Tumblr media
Veer Sooryavanshi (Akshay Kumar) chases down a terrorist plot while having angst about trying to reconcile with his estranged wife Ria (Katrina Kaif).
Sooryavanshi is big on the action and explosions, less so on the plot. This is part of the Rohit Shetty Cop Universe (as it's called on wikipedia) and both Ajay Devgn and Ranveer Singh appear as Singham and Simmba in the long end fight sequence. Honestly that was the best part of the movie as they brought some well deserved comic relief to the film which was sorely lacking in the rest of it. Favorite songs are Mere Yaraa and Hum Hindustani. Neither song has subtitles.

Bollywood Movies Part CCXIII
Tumblr media
Ibrahim (Roshan Mathew) has to decide whether to aid SI Sathyan (Murali Gopy) in transferring murderer Vishnu (Sagar Surya) into police custody or give him up to Laiq (Prithviraj Sukumaran), a fanatic who desires religious retribution.
Kuruthi is a great movie about how religious fanaticism of all colors is destructive. I especially enjoyed Mamukoyya as Moosa Khader who is the voice of reason, even though he's not often listened to. It was also fun to see Prithviraj stretch his villain acting muscles. Favorite songs are Mankoodil and Vetta Mrigam. Both songs have English subtitles.

Anshul Malhotra, code name Bell Bottom (Akshay Kumar), works to release hostages on a plane hijacked by Azaadi Dal, which Anshul believes is a front for Pakistan's intelligence service.
Bell Bottom is loosely based on various plane hijackings in the 1980s by Sikh Separtists but blames them on Pakistan which is historical revisionism to further the conflict between India and Pakistan. Also, I do not remember much about the movie and it blurs with all the other Akshay Kumar spy films. Favorite songs are Khair Mangde and Tum Aaogey. Neither song has subtitles.
Tumblr media
Vibhu (Saif Ali Khan) and Chiku (Arjun Kapoor) are two brothers who run an exorcism business, even though Chiku believes in the supernatural while Vibhu does not. One day they meet Maya (Yami Gautam) who wants them to exorcise a kishkandi that their father famed exorcist Ullat Baba (Saurabh Sachadeva) had previously trapped.
Bhoot Police is very silly and an entertaining watch. You could tell the actors, especially Saif Ali Khan, were having fun during this film. Also the ending is quite wholesome. Favorite song is Aayi Aayi Bhoot Police (transliterated Hindi subtitles).

Vidya Vincent (Vidya Balan) takes up her new post as a Divisional Forest Officer during a series of tiger attacks. She works to safely move the tiger to a protected wildlife reserve while the local politicians hire tiger hunter Ranjan Rajhans (Sharat Saxena) to kill the tiger.
Sherni is a good environmentalist film that does a pretty good job showing why dangerous animals should still be allowed to live. It helps that the focus of the film is the tiger, a charismatic animal. It has good acting and a good story. I especially enjoyed Vijay Raaz as entomologist Hassan Noorani who helps the Forest Office. Favorite song is Bandar Baant (no subtitles).
Tumblr media
Journalist Medha (Aditi Balan) and Detective Sathyajith (Prithviraj Sukumaran) separately investigate Eva Maria's (Athmiya Rajan) murder.
Cold Case is a slightly supernatural thriller. I don't remember much of the film. Favorite song is Eeran Mukil (English subtitles).
Tumblr media
During lockdown, Jithin (Jitin Puthenchery) and Maria (Rima Kallingal) go to a clinic because of a suspected pregnancy.
Santhoshathinte Onnam Rahasyam is an interesting watch because it fully takes place in the car Jithin and Maria are driving in. It is really about Maria and Jithin's relationship and their fears and hopes, as well as the mundanity of their drive during lockdown. I enjoyed it. Favorite song is Pakalukal (no subtitles).

In Savithri, Savithri (Samyuktha Menon) is a communist on the run and hiding as a servant to the lecherous Raghava Pilla (Joju George) in post independence Kerala. In Rachiyamma, Kuttikrishnan (Asif Ali) remembers his romance with the self-sufficient Rachiyamma (Parvathy Thiruvothu) who refuses to be beholden to anyone. In Rani, Cherukkan (Roshan Mathew) wants to have sex with his girlfriend Pennu (Darshana Rajendran) but worries about people finding out.
Aanum Pennum as an anthology about the relationships between men and women doesn't really work out. The best out of the three is Rachiyamma with a stellar performance from Parvathy Thiruvothu. The best part of Rani is Nedumudi Venu as Vasudevan and the ending, although the Eden allegory is too christian for my taste. Savithri is one dimensional and a bit boring. Favorite song is Kadha Padu (no subtitles).
Tumblr media
At the beginning of the pandemic, Sherley (Parvathy Thiruvothu) and her husband Roy (Sharafudheen) go to her father Ittyavira's (Biju Menon) house. There they deal with bureaucracy trying to get Sherley's daughter Sophie (Thejaswini Praveen) from her school in Tamil Nadu. Ittyavira decides to sell his house and the land it's on partially due to his Roy's business troubles and partially due to his failing health. However, before he can do it, he needs Roy's help to unearth a skeleton.
Aarkkariyam is a bit slow, but it's a good movie about family secrets. I enjoyed how life at Ittyavira's house was shown and how it compared to Roy and Sherley's apartment in the city. The relationship between Roy and Ittyavira was well done, which really made the movie work. All of the performances were good. Favorite song is Chiramabhayamee (English subtitles).
Tumblr media
In Majnu Lipakshi (Fatima Sana Shaikh) and crime boss Babloo (Jaideep Ahlawat) are unhappily married as Babloo is gay and he keeps disposing of the men Lipakshi tries to have affairs with. In Khilauna Meenal (Nushratt Baruccha) is the primary caretaker of her sister Binny (Inayat Verma). When they lose their electricity, Meenal begins working for Vinod Agarwal in the hopes that he will help get their electricity back. In Geeli Pucchi Bharti (Konkona Sen Sharma) is initially resentful of the inexperienced Priya (Aditi Rao Hydari) getting a job Bharti is overqualified for. Soon after they become friends, but when Bharti reveals her caste, things get complicated. In Ankahi Nats (Shefali Shah) bonds with Kabir (Manav Kaul) while dealing with her husband Rohan (Tota Roy Chowdhury) refusing to acknowledge that their daughter Samaira (Sara Arjun) is going deaf.
Ajeeb Daastaans is an anthology that purports to be about strange things but I submit that the actual underlying theme connecting all of the movies is betrayal, as they all feature at least one. Of these shorts, Geeli Pucchi and Ankahi are the best. While Majnu and Khilauna have good acting, their stories are lackluster. Favorite song is Sang Rehna (audio only).

Faiza Soofia (Parvathy Thiruvothu) starts graduate school at Delhi University studying a freedom fighter from Malabar. She joins up with the university’s student activist group led by Amal Krishna (Roshan Mathew) and makes friends with her Thulsa (Karunasingh) who is the first in her community to go to graduate school. As Faiza uses her status to speak up for less protected students, she becomes the target of the school’s fascist group.
(CW for movie: religiously motivated murder) Varthamanam is movie that has a very clear sense of what it wants to say and great deal of anger towards the current state of affairs at universities in India. However, it tries to stuff too much into its 2 hours and comes off feeling wooden and one dimensional. The ending is very impactful, though. Favorite songs are Anuragam and Zindagi. Neither songs has subtitles.
Tumblr media
Pinky (Arjun Kapoor) and Sandy (Parineeti Chopra) are on the run after Pinky figures out that he was set up by his employer Tyagi (Jaideep Ahlawat) to take the fall for Sandy’s murder and Sandy is blocked from all her accounts with her employer Parivartan Bank for knowing too much about their Swabhiman program. They decide to cross the border into Nepal but must make sure not to attract the attention of Tyagi, who is still trying to murder Sandy.
(CW for movie: attempted sexual assault, miscarriage) Sandeep aur Pinky Faraar is a decent film and very scenic. The actual plot is good, if a bit slow. I especially enjoyed the parts in Pithoragarh as the characters there felt the most well rounded, aside from our main protagonists. Favorite song is Faraar (no subtitles).
Tumblr media
Saina Nehwal (young Naishaa Kaur Bhatoye, adult Parineeti Chopra) begins playing badminton at her mother’s insistence (Meghna Malik) and rises through the rankings of the Badminton World Federation’s players to become the world’s number 1 female player in 2015.
Saina is a good sports film about badminton. It does a good job of getting you invested in Saina, although it never delves into her frankly terrible politics and only deals with her badminton playing and personal life. Parineeti Chopra is convincing as a badminton player and does a good job in her role. Favorite songs are Chal Wahin Chalein and Parinda. Neither song has subtitles.

Mulla (Sanjana Dipu) travels to Mumbai in search of their brother who left Lakshadweep years previously. They end up, after escaping from an orphanage, in a slum ruled by Bhai (Nivin Pauly), a criminal and addict who also is from Lakshadweep. When Mulla runs afoul of him, they are roped into working for him.
TW for movie: human trafficking, suicide, ritualized self harm. Moothon is a tragedy. No one has a good ending, even Mulla. I really don’t want to put spoilers in the review, but I will put them in the tags because I just have to get some things off my chest. I did really love the gay love story between Akbar and Amir (Roshan Mathew) and how soft it was. I also enjoyed the side characters and how well written they were, even if they weren’t the main focus of the film. The kids were the best, especially how they befriended Mulla even with a languange barrier. Both Nivin Pauly and Sanjana Dipu are great as the main characters. Favorite song is Bikhre (audio with stills from movie, no subtitles).
Tumblr media
Dinesh (Nivin Pauly) meets Shoba (Nayanthara) at his cousin’s wedding where his attempts to sabotage the groom leads to Shoba ending up in the hospital. After he apologizes to her, they become closer throughout the wedding, and Dinesh decides to follow her to Chennai on the pretext of getting an MBA. Dinesh worms his way into her group of friend and they fall in love, but Shoba discovers that Dinesh is not actually in school and just spends his days drinking and spending money.
Love Action Drama is a very silly romance that never really takes itself seriously at all. Even when events seem to be more dramatic, the film never treats them seriously. Even the big fight at the end in extremely silly. Favorite songs are Rathein (audio with transliterated Malayalam lyrics), Varavaayi, Aalolam, and Oru Swapnam Pole (audio with transliterated Malayalam lyrics).
Tumblr media
Albert (Prithviraj Sukumaran), an astrophysicist, travels to the Himalayas with his son Adam (Master Alok) to study a comet that will cause an electro-magnetic blackout for nine days as it passes Earth. On the first day, he meets Ava (Wamiqa Gabbi), a mysterious young woman also looking for the comet. Adam befriends Eva but soon discovers that she has a dark side.
9 is an interesting science fiction thriller that is really about the relationship between Adam and Albert. When focusing on Adam and Albert, the movie is good. When it veers into other stuff involving the comet, it gets a bit weird. As to whatever is up with Ava, I guess you can pick whichever explanation you like better for her existence. Favorite song is Akale (English subtitles).

It has been a while since I have done these and with pandemic going on, I will do an even littler summary and list my favorite songs. These are for movies I watched months ago, and I don’t know when I will watch more.
Tumblr media
Vinod (Nivin Pauly) falls in love with Aisha (Isha Talwar) and she reciprocates, but her family has objections.
Thattathin Marayathu is Isha Talwar’s Malayalam cinema debut. Very cute movie. Favorite songs are Anuragam, Muthuchippi, and Anuragathin Velayil. None of the songs have subtitles.
Tumblr media
When the moneylender’s shop is stolen from, Madhavankutty (Sreenivasan) is called on to make a statement because he was closest. Unfortunately, he didn’t see anything and the police want to pin it on a known criminal in the area.
Bhoopadathil Illatha Oridam is okay when portraying Madhavankutty’s problems in his small town with the council and police. However, it goes off the rails in the second half when Bhama (Iniya) is fridged. Also, I’m pretty sure the theft was never solved. Favorite songs are Aakasha and Pranaya Swaram. Neither song has subtitles.
Tumblr media
Thamara (Namitha Pramod) is an orphaned fisher. One day, she finds an old man (Nedumudi Venu) while fishing and takes him in, in the vague hope that he is her father returned to her from the sea.
Puthiya Theerangal is actually a good film about found family. I did like the focus on fishing. Favorite songs are Marippeelikkatte and Sindoora Pottu.

An aged Bharat (Salman Khan) reflects on losing his father Gautam (Jackie Shroff) and sister Gudiya (Barbiee Sharma) during the Partition and the promise he made to his father to look after the rest of the family while waiting for Gautam and Gudiya to return. He recounts his adventures with his best friend Vilayti (Sunil Grover) in the circus, in the Gulf, and as a sailor to his siblings’ grandchildren, as well as meeting the love of his life Kumud Raina (Katrina Kaif).
Bharat is a decent film about an old man coming to terms with loss and trauma that happened when he was a boy. The actual plot is a bit slow and there’s a lot of chaff that could have been cut. Overall, it gets pretty boring. The actors all play their roles well, especially Kaif. Favorite songs are Chashni and Aaya Na Tu. Neither song has subtitles.
Tumblr media
When an outbreak of Nipah Virus is discovered in Kozhikode, various doctors and government officials, including C K Prameela (Revathi), Dr. Suresh Rajan (Kunchako Baban), Paul V Abraham (Tovino Thomas), and Dr. Smrithy Bhaskar (Poornima Indrajith), work together to stop the outbreak and discover its source.
Virus is a wonderfully made thriller about containing a deadly outbreak that shows how the people involved on all levels are impacted, including those quarantined in the outbreak zone. I loved how the film did not have a linear story and showed background on each of the victims as we were introduced to them. The film made sure to humanize everyone, and that really made it poignant and beautiful. All of the actors were amazing in their roles, a statement made more impressive by the fact that this is an ensemble movie. This movie doesn’t have songs.
Tumblr media
When Anand Kumar’s (Hrithik Roshan) dreams of going to Cambridge are shattered by his father’s death. Forced to sell papads for a living, he meets Lallan Singh (Aditya Shrivastava) who invites him to teach students preparing for the IIT examination. When Anand comes across a student who cannot afford the fees, he decides to start his own center to teach impoverished students.
Super 30 is based on the program of the same name. The movie is very much a fictionalization of the events surrounding its inception and focuses only on Kumar’s contributions to the program, leaving out co-founder Abhayanand. As a movie, I found the parts focusing students the most interesting. The rest of the film wasn’t as interesting as those parts, especially due to unnecessarily added drama. I also didn’t like the decision to darken Hrithik Roshan’s skin for the film. Favorite songs are Question Mark and Basanti No Dance. Neither song has subtitles.

After a failed launch of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV), Rakesh Dhawan (Akshay Kumar) is moved to the Mars Orbiter Mission, a project that is currently dead in the water. Tara Shinde (Vidya Balan) joins him as project manager, partially due to feeling guilty for the failed launch. They form a team to make a satellite lightweight enough to go on the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and to calculate the precise fuel needs to get the satellite all the way to Mars.
Mission Mangal is a great fictionalized account of the Mars Orbiter Mission that does a good job explaining the problems faced by the team without getting too technical. I also enjoyed that the film was not just about the mission and showed the lives of the various team members (except for Dhawan) outside of the mission. All of the actors performed their roles well. Favorite songs are Dil Mein Mars Hai and Shaabaashiyaan. Neither song has subtitles.
Tumblr media
Rony (Prithviraj Sukumaran) works for a catering company and comes in conflict with Gemma (Madonna Sebastian) who he initially believes is a party crasher, but turns out to be the groom’s daughter. Later, he is tasked with taking Chandy (Vijayaraghavan) to a hotel, but ends up caught up in Chandy’s many antics as his stay extends due to injury. Meanwhile, Shiva (Prasanna) honeytraps people to blackmail them.
TW for movie: rape, attempted rape of a child, animal abuse. Brother’s Day has a promising start but completely loses everything in the second half. I think my first clue that it wasn’t going to be good was when they pixelated the wound when young Shiva kills his father. If you have to pixelate something to make it past the ratings board as a family friendly movie, maybe you should show it differently. Unfortunately, this also not the only time they use pixelation in the movie and the second time is much worse. If Shiva could have stayed a honeytrapper, perhaps the movie would have been better, but they had to make him the most villainous villain ever. Also, the movie sets up for a Rony/Gemma romance, but it never follows through. Favorite songs are Nenjodu Vinaa (audio only) and Oru Thooval. Neither song has subtitles.
Tumblr media
Zoya (Sonam K Ahuja), born on the day India won the World Cup for cricket, is her brother’s (Sikander Kher) lucky charm for his amateur cricket games, even though she doesn’t like cricket. Her job at an ad agency sends her to Sri Lanka to work with the Indian Cricket team, where she meets Nikhil Khoda (Dulquer Salmaan), the reclusive team captain. When Zoya tells the team about her use as a lucky charm, some of the team members decide she really is lucky for them, although Nikhil refuses to be so superstitious. The former team captain Robin (Angad Bedi) tries to get Zoya to be the official team lucky charm in a play to win back the captaincy.
The Zoya Factor is a great romance that is very good at being silly, but also gets serious when necessary. It also manages to show how headology and hard work pay off. I absolutely enjoyed how the film really leaned into the product placement because of how it plays into Zoya’s career and because they really play with it. Overall, a wonderful film that nearly killed me with cuteness. Also the actors are all great. Favorite songs are Kaash, Maheroo, and Pepsi Ki Kasam. None of the songs have subtitles.

When Chief Minister P. K. Ramdas (Sachin Khedekar) dies, he leaves behind five potential heirs: his daughter Priya (Mamta Mohandas) who is not active in politics, her husband Bimal “Bobby” Nair (Vivek Oberoi), P. K. Ramdas’s son Jethin (Tovino Thomas) who lives in the States, the current acting CM Mahesha Varma (Saikumar), and Stephen Nedumpally (Mohanlal) who only recently entered politics and has a checkered past. Bobby makes a grab for power by planning to funnel drugs into Kerala, while supporting Jethin becoming the face of P. K. Ramdas’s party.
TW for movie: drug use, noncon (offscreen). Lucifer is a fascinating movie about politics and a broken family. The story is never dull, and it draws you in even though some of the transitions are jarring. The actors are all excellent, but this film is really Mohanlal’s show. Favorite songs are Varika Varika and Empuraane. Neither song has subtitles.
Tumblr media
Right before the Partition of India, Satya (Sonakshi Sinha) discovers she is dying. She arranges for Roop (Alia Bhatt) to join her household just outside Lahore, but Roop insists on becoming Satya’s husband Dev’s (Aditya Roy Kapur) second wife. Unhappy in Husnabad, Roop takes singing lessons from Bahar Begum (Madhuri Dixit) and begins a romance with blacksmith Zafar (Varun Dhawan) who has ulterior motives.
Kalank is beautiful and ostentatious, but is lackluster otherwise. The actors try with what they’re given, but the story lets them down. As a story about the tensions during the Partition, it is especially bad because it doesn’t try hard enough to put nuance into its portrayal of the events. Favorite songs are Ghar More Pardesiya, Aira Gaira, and Tabaah Ho Gaye. None of the songs have subtitles.
Tumblr media
Days before fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a pilot, Pallavi (Parvathy Thiruvothu) turns down her longtime boyfriend Govind’s (Asif Ali) offer of marriage. In retaliation, he attacks her with acid, compromising her vision and destroying her dream forever. As Pallavi learns to live with her scarring, she meets Vishal (Tovino Thomas) of Cloud 9 Airlines and challenges him to get her a job as an air hostess.
TW for movie: emotional abuse. Uyare is a poignant take on an abusive relationship and its aftermath, as well as the effects an acid attack can have. The whole story is extremely well written and believable, except for perhaps when Pallavi takes over when a pilot has a heart attack, which is the framing device for the movie. However, the film is still very enjoyable and a great watch. Parvathy shines in her role as Pallavi, but the other actors are also very good, especially Siddique as Pallavi’s father Raveendran. Favorite songs are Pathinettu Vayasilu and Kaatil Veezha. Neither song has subtitles.

After his father dies in an accident, Avinash (Dulquer Salmaan) recieves the wrong corpse. With his friend Shaukat’s (Irrfan Khan) help, he travels to Kochi to meet Tahira (Amala Akkineni) so that they can exchange her mother’s corpse for his father’s. On the way, they pick up Tahira’s daughter Tanya (Mithila Palkar) so that she can attend her grandmother’s memorial.
TW: domestic abuse mentioned. Karwaan is a lighthearted and funny road trip that also deals with grieving and reconciliation. It hits the funny when it needs to, while also being serious at the right points. Irrfan Khan, Dulquer Salmaan, and Mithila Palkar are all wonderful in their roles and their interactions really make the movie work. Favorite songs are Kadam, Chota Sa Fasana, Heartquake, and Saansein. None of the songs have subtitles.
Tumblr media
When auto-rickshaw driver Raghavan (Anu Mohan) goes missing, C.I. Alexander (Sreenivisan) decides to visit Harsha (Dulquer Salmaan), whose wife Maya (Shikha Nair) was murdered by Raghavan. As body parts without identifying features turn up, Alexander becomes convinced of Harsha’s involvement, but is unable to prove anything.
Theevram is an okay revenge movie. Part of the movie is extremely blue to represent the present, while the normal colored parts represent the happier past. I did not like this color scheme mostly because the blue just made everything look weird. I did like the performances, but the plot was a bit convoluted. Favorite songs are Innariyathe and Puthiyoru Pakalil. Neither song has subtitles.
Tumblr media
Afsal (Dulquer Salmaan) is in love with Shahana (Nazriya Nazim), one of the customers at cell phone store, but he is unable to work up the courage to talk to her. When he gains access to phone tapping software, he and his friend Binoy (Jacob Gregory) use it for pranks, but as the number of phones they tap increases, the more worrying it becomes to the police who work to find the phone tappers.
Salalah Mobiles is very silly and never takes itself seriously even when dealing with a serious topic, like the invasion of privacy. While the romance aspect of the film of cute, the film is not well written. For what they were given, the performances are good. Favorite songs are Eeran Kaattin and Rasoolallah. Neither song has subtitles.
