⠀ This glass-plate negative showing Bertha Lascelles in the driver's seat in Chicago was found just yesterday. Croonborg’s Gazette of Fashions wrote in August 1915 about Lascelles: “Chicago has a chauffeuse. She is none other than Mlle. Bertha Lascelles of Belgium, and she was photographed in her costume as a Chicago auto driver for Croonborg’s Gazette of Fashions. Compelled to learn a trade because of reverses as the result of war, the little titian-haired Belgian is now at work in Chicago where she can earn a regular salary.⠀ ⠀ "Mlle. Lascelles walked into the office of Manager Henry Meyers of Convent Garden, Chicago’s newest amusement resort, a few days ago, and applied for a position as chauffeur. ‘My father and brothers went to the war,’ she explained in broken English, ‘and I was compelled to go to work. I learned how to run an automobile and here are letters of recommendation from persons by whom I was employed in Brussels.’ Mlle.
