Getting older - life teachings from an old soul

So, at 26 I decided to take ballet classes. I've never taken a proper dance class, and though it had always been a dream of mine as a child it never happened.

Now, much older and with ability to spend money as I wish I decided to take adult ballet classes. Let me tell you, I LOVE IT.

The girls in the class are all in the same boat, with us being "newbies" learning first position and trying to understand how to hold our hands. Everyone is kind and cheers each other on, even as we fall during jumps or mess up our footing.

Going back to ballet reminded me of something, that life can be a life long learning process but it doesn't always have to be a serious one.

I do a lot for the sake of self-improvement and career development. But it's nice to take a new hobby or activity that's very low stakes. Even lower stakes than my half marathon. There is no expectation or time I'm trying to beat, only me and some new friends jumping around and holding fun poses to great music. I'm learning, I'm socializing but it's fun and calming and everything a person could want out of an afternoon.

I want to apply this to my life more. Not everything has to have the end goal of adding a skill or making it a side hustle. Sometimes, our only objective is to enjoy.

My advice today, as someone who daily feels like they've lived 100 years and 10 at the same time, is find low stakes hobbies and make them social. Life gets better when you do.

Welcome to our easy ballet barre. This is a ballet technique class and specifically a ballet technique class beginner level. If you are new to Adult beginner ballet, this is an amazing and easy ballet barre for beginners, that will allow you to learn and have fun. In this beginner ballet class, we focus on correct ballet basics to avoid bad habits. We also have many other beginner ballet lessons, if you are looking for variety of levels for adult dancers. Even though this is ballet class for beginners, our goal is to make it as entertaining and productive as possible. We always share ballet technique tips, and unique ballet advice for our adult beginner ballet dancer out there. This video has only a beginner ballet barre, but no center. First Class

I arrived at the studio about fifteen minutes early. Two dance teachers were chatting outside the back door. I recognized one teacher as M’s* ballet teacher from a previous class. “Come in!” she said, with a friendly wave of her arm. So, I went in.

I sat on one fo the wooden benches in the hallway outside the two studio rooms on the first floor. The place was empty, except for the receptionist at her desk at the end of the hall. (The other teachers had taken the elevator to the upstairs studios.)

I looked around and began to fret that perhaps I would be the only student in class. The clock ticked. I scrolled a little on my phone, distractedly. At 6:13, I picked up my belongings and walked to the reception desk and asked if the class was maybe upstairs. She reassured me that the class would be in downstairs studio A. 

I relaxed and changed from my Skechers sandals to my ballet slippers. As I was doing this, an Asian woman who looked to be in her 70s rushed in and breathed a sigh of relief: “Good! I’m not late!” She went to change, and another student came in. I recognized her as the mom of one of the best dancers from last spring’s recital. I had also seen her over the years just coming and going in the studio.

We entered the studio as the teacher did. The teacher, K, had taught M in one or two of her previous classes. My fellow classmates introduced themselves--L (the mom) and M.A. K asked us about our ballet experience. Well, she knew the others and a little of their dance background. I think she may have taught them adult ballet before. I explained that I had zero experience. K’s face brightened, thinking of ways to incorporate beginner concepts for me into the class. 

We began at the barre in first position. She demonstrated the plie and releve, and then we copied her moves. She arranged the moves into a combination, which we copied first without music to acclimate, and then again to music. We then changed to fifth position (for the other two) and third position (for me, because it’s a little easier). We learned the tendu and another step whose name eludes me.

After spending a good portion of the class at the barre (maybe 2/3rds), we moved the barres to the side and began some floor exercises in the center of the room. We practiced plie-jumps (not sure of the technical name for it). I learned that jumping doesn’t hurt my knees when I land with my knees bent, like a spring. When we practiced turns, K opened the blinds so that we could focus on marks across the street. I learned not to be self-conscious about people passing by. Yes, they could see me in my pink tights and black dance shorts. So what? I was learning a new skill. I was focused. I was thrilled to be there.

At the end of class, L and the teacher both complimented me on what I had done that day. They said it was really good for a first-time student. I guess barre class (exercise) at the gym had been a sort of quasi-ballet class after all. That was honestly the only previous experience I had ever had. I didn’t mention that to them, because I didn’t think it counted.

In this class, I liked the feeling of holding lightly to the barre. Of keeping myself upright, sturdy, and strong. Of balance. I can’t wait to go back.

*M is my daughter. I’ve found what when I change names in my writing, it starts to feel like fiction, and the actual people I’m writing about begin to morph into characters. So, instead of changing names, I will use initials.
