1. The War Games - Genuinely the most innovative concept in the entire B&W era imo as well as providing a great conclusion to the era and introduction to the greater Timelord culture.
2. The Mind Robber - There’s some behind-the-scenes lore about the haunted house section of The 1st Doctor Story “The Chase” that the belief that that setting occurred within the imagination would be disastrous to the concept of Doctor Who as a whole. This story proves that notion completely wrong.
3. The Macra Terror -
THERE ARE NO MACRA! also Jamie does a little dance. I watched the animation and this was definitely my favorite animation of the era.
4. The Web of Fear - This story is a lot more important than I thought it would be. The first proper follow-up to a previous non-Dalek story with The Abominable Snowmen, the intro for The Brig, and this might be Victoria’s strongest story outside of her intro.
5. The Power of The Daleks - I was a bit conflicted on whether to put this one or The Evil of The Daleks for the unique setting and Victoria’s introduction, but I think this one wins out for me. Not just for Troughton’s introduction, what actually sells this story is the reactions of Ben & Polly to The 2nd Doctor as we see Polly quickly adapt and act jolly with the new Doctor and Ben be absolutely FURIOUS and these reactions really help to sell how groundbreaking it was even then.
I think my takes on the 2nd Doctor era fall within what most people think of as the best in contrast to some of my favorites of 1’s, but I hope you enjoyed all the same. Thanks for the support of my silly liveblogging in the past 24 hours : )
I enjoyed their interactions with the Doctor, especially as functioning unit with them and Jamie. I particularly enjoyed Polly, who felt like a posh fun female companion. Holistically though, their send off encapsulates my entire feelings of them as companions: underwhelming and leaving me wanting more. Ben's role in the series essentially gets taken over by Jamie and Polly was too often sidelined into an assistant like companion when her personality from the first episode with Dodo shows so much more independence from this. Alas, they were fun companions that helped get us through the first regeneration, ushering in a new era, AND I can always respect companions that want to leave the Doctor to remain in more peaceful, less hectic times.
A hypothetical god tier for Polly Wright from Doctor Who: the Seer of Heart.
A Seer of Heart is among those who explore the individual’s impact. They are motivated by others to know instinct. (x)
The Seer of Heart hates being wrong and is invested in self discovery. (x)
They are the Scholar Free Spirit, defined by awareness and instinct. (x)
Their opposite is the Mage of Mind. Their inverse is the Witch of Mind.
They share their personality with the Rogue of Light.
The Seer of Heart would quest on a planet similar to the Land of Flow and Heart, reigned over by Aphrodite (Goddess of Love) or Yaldabaoth (Trapper of Souls). They would rise to ascension on the wings of ladybugs. (x)(x)(x)
[ID: a digital drawing of Ben Jackson and Polly Wright from Doctor Who, dancing back to back with their arms linked. Polly is a lovely blonde woman with long hair and bangs and strong eyeliner, wearing an orange dress with a black and white checkered pattern. Her hair flows around when she's dancing. Ben is a strong jawed guy with cropped brown hair and a sailor hat and outfit. The background is colorful, purple and streaked sith bright teal and orange. /End ID]
Ben and Polly! I didn't really connect to them the first time around but recently my sister and I watched their time more thoroughly and I found myself appreciating them and actually finding them quite underrated. So I wanted to draw them in their swinging sixties glory, jiving according to period refs! Well, I looked at some magazines for Polly, but I'll admit Ben is 40% dressed based on Donald Duck muscle memory.... Anyways. These two are neat and don't receive enough credit for their influence on modern companions.
Aw I only have two more Ben & Polly serials. I've really enjoyed them, especially Polly who always seemed way more hip and on top of it (despite her being often sidelined.)
There is so much untapped potential in DW running into old companions. The School Reunion episode was such a good story and I want more. It doesn't even have to be whole episodes. Just acknowledging them even.
The Doctor and companion getting into trouble and arrested. He uses his one call and ten minutes later the officers are baffled as they let them go. King Steven Taylor just pardoned this weirdo!
An adventure doesn't go so well. A young child being left parentless, the Doctor knows they'll be in good care at an orphanage run by Polly and Ben.
One of the companions get sick with a weird disease that doesn't make itself apparent until after they get back into the Tardis.... Better take them to get treated at one of the best medical research hospitals in the galaxy. So off to visit Nyssa.
Visiting the planet Trion and reminiscing about a cynical ginger he used to know.
The Tardis landed a bit too far away from where they need to go or the Doctor needs to chase after an alien. Cut to an outside shot of UNIT with the Doctor speeding out of there in Bessie (companion holding on for dear life).
I just crave more call backs and connections to the wider whoniverse.
A hypothetical god tier for Ben Jackson from Doctor Who: the Rogue of Doom.
A Rogue of Doom is among those who use energy to influence. They are motivated by others to steal caution. (x)
The Rogue of Doom lacks self control and hates confrontation. (x)
They are the Free Spirit Defender, defined by reckless caution. (x)
Their opposite is the Thief of Life. Their inverse is the Knight of Life.
They share their personality with the Knight of Heart.
The Rogue of Doom would quest on a planet similar to the Land of Cubes and Doom, reigned over by Hades (God of the Underworld) or Persephone (Dual Goddess of Spring Growth and Decay). They would rise to ascension on the wings of locusts. (x)(x)(x)
