TLDR .

Benjamin grew up in hardship, the son of Rejected parents in a home filled with violence. His father abandoned them, and his mother’s string of abusive boyfriends made life unbearable. Seeking escape, he wandered the streets, stealing books to read and sketching to distract himself from hunger.

Christian found him during one of these escapes, taking him under his wing like a little brother. Inspired by Christian’s resourcefulness, Benjamin worked hard in school, determined to carve a better future. He learned to pick locks, survive on his own, and protect the younger kids around him. His mother made brief attempts to change, and for a while, things were good—until another abusive boyfriend shattered it all. After a brutal beating, Benjamin left for good.

Christian mentored him again, and though his aptitude test suggested Virtue, he initially resisted. Only Christian’s plea—Virtue’s hospital had resources Vice desperately needed—convinced him. He chose Virtue, excelling as a surgeon and rising quickly to head of surgery and trauma. He secretly trades with the Hearts, ensuring life-saving tonics reach those who need them. He believes he’s surpassed his teacher, but that’s a thought he keeps to himself .

FULL STORY .

Life was never exactly easy for Benjamin, but that didn’t mean he would just accept defeat.

Born to a rejected Mother and Father, it was always clear that his father blamed his mother for their situation. They constantly got into arguments and fights. Eventually, it got to a point when his father stormed out one day and he never came back.

Every one of her new boyfriends after that were worse than the last. He began to prefer the ones that pretended he didn’t exist rather than the ones that would throw a bottle at him for any reason or burn him with a cigarette bud.

He’d leave the house often, get away from it all when he could. Try to things to buy little things to read on his own or draw pictures… The only real problem was the hunger pains and headaches. 

Christian found him on one of these excursions and took him under his wing like a little brother. Benjamin really looked up to Christian. He wanted to be confident like he was. Resourceful. He started to work even harder at school. If Christian was getting out, he was too.

He was a great student but he also knew what it took to survive. Especially since Christian went into Vice when he was 14. He moved out, learned to pick locks and pockets— take what others had in excess. Being alone helped him look after the younger kids now. Protect them. Mend their injuries. Turns out he had a talent for it.

His mother tried. He believed she did. She was just loving him in the only way she knew how. He just wished he understood it or could feel it. It seemed like she was cleaning up and he moved back in. Things were good. He treasured those months.

She got another new boyfriend and the world collapsed again right before his eyes. After getting beaten by the stranger when Benjamin tried to pour a tonic down the sink, he left his mom for the last time. That was last time he ever saw her. He was on his own again.

Christian again, took him under his wing, becoming a sort of protégé even before he even graduated high school. And hey, it worked, his aptitude test called for virtue. Even if he decided he wasn’t going there, it was nice to see the world open up. 

He was fully prepared to be a Heart. Even the encouragement of some of the professors in the university couldn’t change his mind… Then the only person that could change his mind—did. 

Christian explained how dire of a situation the hospital in vice was. No new supplies, equipment, or help. If Benjamin could go to Virtue and work in their hospital, there was a chance he could get the things they needed to help more people survive.

It was an easy choice. He chose to be a virtue and worked his ass off to be a queen. He even got close with some of the professors. Benjamin was a hotshot rookie surgeon in no time.

That was when he started trading with the Hearts. Virtue was lacking in tonic. They didn’t like to use it unless it was a high status person. He wasn’t a fan.

And eventually, he became head of surgery and trauma because of his efforts. Personally, he believes he’s surpassed his teacher, but he keeps that part to himself .

STORY POINTS

Benjamin Vasilios stopped breathing when he was only 2 days old. His mother’s alcoholism had caused his development to be delayed. It was a miracle he was even alive today.

When he learned the truth of what had happened to him from a family friend, all he wanted was to know what happened and how to help other children like him. He learned what a doctor was and that's what he would be. It never changed.

When he was 10, his biological father up and left. His mother had cheated with another man who would soon become his Stepfather. Before that point, he was relatively close with his mother. Now he blamed both of them for his father leaving.

That was when the fights started. His Stepdad hated the pesky son he was settled with and his mother was drinking more and constantly reprimanding him to respect his "father." If it was up to her— her son would end up just like them. But Benjamin was bound and determined to never let that happen. He hated their constant inability to take decent care of him.

Oftentimes, he found comfort in the librarian as a sort of makeshift mother. All that reading made him realize just how awful his family was and made him wish he had a different one. But he was, at the very least, safe at the library.

Then a whoopsie happened… His mother got pregnant. He was 13 when Josie Reigh was born. And he had been bound and determined to make sure she didn’t suffer the same fate as him. This caused even more fights and broken bottles thrown his way, but it worked. She was alive. She was healthy.

He became somewhat of a teenage father by that point. He picked up all the slack when their parents lacked. But all that lost time and abuse made him self-destructive. He just wasn't allowed to care about himself.

That being said, Benjamin was popular in school. He was well-educated and his teachers loved him. Though, he had very few relationships— which made him a bit of a conquest for other students… He rebelled against the idea constantly.

That didn't mean he didn't date or have girlfriends, he did, but he was really only truly tamed long-term by Allegra Hayes. She ended up being his first love.

The only time Benjamin had really been reckless was in his senior year after graduation. He decided to just let loose and have fun, get a little drunk-- but it wasn't a great idea to have stumbled home in the morning.

When he stepped through the door, his stepfather had been waiting. One of them was hungover and the other was day drunk... Discussing normal teenage behavior wasn't going to go well.

His recklessness caused their biggest argument yet. By the end of it, fists had been thrown and Benjamin had been packing up his things.

He’d have to leave Josie and Allegra. But he didn’t really have a choice. If he stayed, he’d end up killing his Stepdad or his Stepdad would kill him. Allegra would be fine, he knew she would be, but he’d have to leave Josie here until she was legally old enough to leave with him.

When he was ready, he left Josie a small vintage necklace with a white heart charm and kept a similar one in black. He left a kiss on her forehead, stole what he could for money, said goodbye to Allegra, and left in the middle of the night— it was the hardest thing he’d ever done.

His mother had tried to stop him, but he couldn't stay. Nothing she could say would stop him. In those moments, he saw the mother he thought had long disappeared. It just wasn't enough.

The first thing he did was change his last name. His destiny and hard work would never belong to either man. He went with Creed, a name in his mother’s bloodline that was lost with time. He'd give her that.

Finally, he was free. He adventured anywhere and everywhere in his pursuit of learning and eventually became a leading rookie trauma surgeon.

He never forgot about Josie, he never took off his necklace, but he’d been completely cut off from her. It was like he had never even been born. And in his pursuit of living, he just couldn’t leave to try to get her back. He wasn’t even sure he could take care of her at his level. So— he lived until he was stable.

The last thing he wanted was to become what his biological father was to him for Josie. He couldn't just disappear forever.

And so, the second he was stable enough, he packed up what he could and left for his hometown, ready to finally be the big brother he was meant to be.

Gandalf The Green Returns with ‘A Billion Faces’

~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~

Hailing from Leeds, England, this is GANDALF THE GREEN. The stoner-doom trio is one of a handful of younger bands comprised of members in their late-teens and early-twenties that have been impressing us lately, joining company with Montana's Wizzerd, Toronto's Horse Lung, Portland's SAOLA and Ape Cave, as well as Witchers Creed from Sweden.

Something interesting I've observed about what I'll dub the Dopesmoker generation is their affinity for large-scale compositions. Horse Lung shot for Bach-like complexity with their fugal composition Rattenkönig and have just released a pair of tracks clocking in at 18 and 28 minutes respectively on 'ἔσχατον' (2019). Likewise, Ape Cave released the massive double album, 'Language of the Earth' (2018), with Sleep producer Billy Anderson, who actually invited these kids to come in and record it after hearing their 2016 album Pillars of Evolution.

With Gandalf The Green's latest single, we find them similarly thinking on a grand scale. The near fourteen-minute epic "A Billion Faces" is the foretaste of the glory to come, as the band readies to release their full-length via APF Records this fall. Staged in three interlocking segments, the track is a real trip and holds up well to repeated listens. Execution-wise, Andrew Flint (guitar, vox), Jack Walker (drums, vox), and Danny Wrigley (bass guitar) have never sounded tighter as a unit. Compositionally, the fuzz-trippers show they can achieve balance and depth within a big-picture framework, without betraying flow or nuance. Fans of Slomatics and Conan will surely find this a joy to listen to from start to finish.

I think the band describes it best: "A 13-minute psych-infused stoner doom filth fest. All the tone. All the distortion. Titanic-sized knuckle-dragging gnarly riffs amped into pure oblivion through a Matamp rig of doom. We are excited for you to hear it." An Interview with

    Gandalf The Green

For those new to Gandalf The Green, tell us about how you formed and your history.

It started with Andy writing a bedroom demo for 'The Right' in 2015, we'd previously been in a deathcore band together (we know, we were 16, cut us some slack) and knew we all liked slow and heavy music, so got in touch and we started rehearsing with ghetto equipment in Andy's bedroom in Huddersfield. The name came from a friend who'd just bought a Gandalf style pipe and we found the pun hilarious for a Stoner Doom band, so we used it. We released our Debut EP 'King of the Ashes' in September 2016 as a 4-piece band with two guitarists, though soon after we split with our drummer and put Jack behind the kit as a trio. After that things began moving properly. Since then, we've been gigging more, collecting more equipment, and worsening our tinnitus by turning up louder. In the last year or so we've finally started getting proper slots on festivals and local gigs, though we're still yet to play a headline show!

What music has influenced your sound, and who are your musical heroes?

Our philosophy is that we want to play stupidly low-tuned, crushingly heavy music, but not in a way that sounds too evil or miserable, then combine that with trippy, ambient cleans for a huge dynamic change. Someone once put it eloquently as 'The brutality of Mordor with the serenity of the Shire.'

From a writing perspective, our main influences are Conan, Sleep, YOB and Elephant Tree. Though with all the spacey ambient bits it's quite difficult to pin exactly where a lot of that comes from, mainly just going a bit nuts with effects and seeing what comes out.

AF: My musical idol is forever Dave Grohl, even if this band doesn't sound much like his stuff. My favourite guitar players are the ones for the bands listed, plus Tony Iommi, of course.

JW: We all listen to very varied stuff, so there’s all sorts, but for this genre my influences are, Yob, The Body, Elephant Tree, Khanate, Om, Weedeater, Windhand, BongCauldron. Musical heroes? Fenriz, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams III, Mike Scheidt.

DW: My influences change around a lot but probably The Body, Sleep, Conan, Thou and Full of Hell. As for heroes the first that comes to mind is Jordan Dreyer.

What’s been your favourite gig to play so far?

AF: I'd say Gizzardfest 2018 as it was our largest crowd, but one of my amps blew up during sound check so I was a bit miffed. Other than that, the Holy Spider Promotions show Terence Larkin booked at the Mulberry Tavern in Sheffield last year was brilliant. A tiny, sweaty venue crammed with people who were really digging the music.

JW: Yeah Gizzardfest was really cool, but for me I'd say that Sheffield gig, it was Mulberry Tavern with Khost, Oak, Ritual King, Regulus and Stonelung. When we went onstage the venue was rammed so the atmosphere was great for us, it WAS proper sweaty but that's the best way.

DW: Got to agree with Gizzardfest I was amazed by the amount of people there and the reception we got cancelled out the problems by a long shot for me.

King of the Ashes by Gandalf the Green

How do you look back on your 'King of the Ashes' EP two and a half years on?

We recorded it for £0 in Andy's bedroom with whatever mics we had on hand and did the drums with some University students. Other than 'The One Ring', it's not very representative of our sound these days though, as we were finding our feet and trying lots of writing styles, with speedier Stoner Rock tracks like 'King of the Ashes' and 'The Right', which we don't really play these days.

It's fun to see how the tracks have evolved for our live performances though, 'The One Ring' now screams with feedback, has reverb swells and washed out cleans, while 'Old Toby' has a massively slowed down outro riff and stereo panning oscillating delay at the beginning. If you enjoy the debut, definitely come check us out live to see how it's evolved.

AF: I'm still pretty happy with it and loved the super DIY bedroom recording. I felt the production quality came out great, given the circumstances. Seeing how I’ve changed my vocal style and tuned my guitar down so much lower makes comparing the new and old material interesting.

JW: I have a lot of fond memories from that time writing and recording, but since we were so new to it all it doesn't quite have as good sound quality as I'd like. It's alright, but we've grown as a band and the stuff we're writing now has a way more unique sound and is better in every way I can think of.

DW: I still listen to it a fair bit honestly. I think it still holds up, but I'm excited to start showing how we've developed over the past few years and how we come across out of a bedroom. What music are you digging right now?

AF: Right now I'm on a massive hype for the gnarliest, darkest stuff I can find, such as Grey Widow, Coltsblood, Ommadon, Bismuth, and Glasghote, and I imagine these bands are going to work into my writing style for our next release.

JW: I listen to a shit load of country, like every day, maybe even more than I listen to metal. Artists like Benjamin Tod, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams III, Jesse Stewart, Crywank, The Native Howl, etcetera. But for this genre the stuff on rotation right now is bands like Windhand, Grime, The Body, Yob, Bell Witch, Ommadon, Bismuth, Sloth Hammer, Primitive Man, Elephant Tree, Goblinsmoker, Tuskar.

DW: I've been binging on grindcore and hardcore recently, a lot of Full of Hell and Wormrot on repeat. Other than that the new Body Void EP has been blowing me away every time I listen.

You’ve recently signed with APF Records. Which bands on the label do you share an affinity with?

AF: The reason we approached APF to begin with is because we love so many bands on the roster, it's hard to pick out a few! Personally, I'd say BongCauldron, Battalions, and Under, though there really isn't a bad band on APF.

JW: BongCauldron, since they were the main influence on me (and I think the others too) when starting this band. They were one of the first bands to help me get into this kind of music, since I found them when Andy's old band supported them in Bad Apples years ago and through that found more doom/stoner bands.

DW: Yes, BongCauldron, for pretty obvious reasons. Also I've been listening to Under- Stop Being Naive a lot since seeing them at Gizzardfest they've got such a unique and crushing sound.

Tell us about "A Billion Faces" -- what’s it about, and how did the track come together?

AF: It was the first track I wrote after we tuned down to drop F and bought a bunch of new effects, so I was really playing with all the new toys and trying to make something with a big dynamic change from the gentle intro to when it kicks in. We've been performing it live for a while, so the song's evolved over time to include the sexy wah solo and, because Jack and Danny love noise music, we added the noise/screaming section in the outro. The original demo was only 9 minutes compared to the final 13!

We were approached by a friend of a friend (Alex Tune, assisted by Jake Bonnett) who needed a band to record for his University coursework, it seemed mutually beneficial, and we'd get to record in the gorgeous Phipps Hall and borrow a bunch of Huddersfield Uni's Matamp equipment for free to use with ours, so we took him up on it. We live recorded the track in December 2018 and mixed and mastered the track ourselves, so again got away with paying £0 for the release. It sounded lovely in the room, but we really didn't expect the final product to sound quite as good as it did. Lyrically, the track is about parallel universes and how, if they exist, every different possible version of you exists somewhere in a big infinite tree of possible yous, experiencing the best and worst things all at once. I was wondering where I'd be if I'd taken a different turn in life and moved to a different city, and I realised that there'd be a version of me in a parallel universe where I did move there, wondering right now where he'd be if he took the turns I did. We're both thinking about each other amongst a billion different versions of ourselves, but unable to know who the other is and what their life is like.

The song comes with a cracking video. How did that come about?

A friend of the band, and vocalist/guitarist in Andy's other band, Andrew Johnston (he uses the moniker 'AEVJohnston' for music) offered to help. We thought it'd be a crime to not get video footage of us performing in such a beautiful venue, so he came along free of charge, brought his fancy lighting rig, bathed the room in green light, rented a couple of cameras from the University, and filmed us while we recorded. We edited the footage ourselves cut from various different takes we did. Again, we paid nothing for the video because we're cheap (do you see a theme?).

JW: Shout out Johnston for being a sick bloke, nice one mate it turned it really well, thank you. Sadly though, I don't think the video shows just how beautiful that room really was. Like the video is great, don't get me wrong, but actually being stood in that room with that lighting rig made it look gorgeous. Such a great atmosphere for it. Again, cheers Johnston, that was a huge help, I think the video of it really brings this release together.

What’s your plans for the rest of 2019?

We're working on our next release, of which we have over half an hour written already. Andy is busy with University, and the other two of us with real life things. Put simply, in 2019 we want to push to play more gigs and write more music. Hopefully we'll have another release done or out by the end of the year. We're aiming not to fuck about as much for it as we did for this one, because it took a long time to get going.

If your house was on fire and you could grab one thing from it before it burned down, what would that be?

AF: My Green Matamp GT1 amplifier, it's like my child.

JW: My bong, it's like my child.

DW: My cat, it's like my child.

Finally: anything to declare?

JW: Yeah, we just want to say how much we appreciate everything that's happened to us since finishing the single. We love every one of you who's checked us out or gave us a chance. Announcing Winners WGA Awards 2019: ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?,’ ‘Eighth Grade’

In a pair of upsets, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” has won the Writers Guild of America’s adapted screenplay award for Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty and Bo Burnham has won the original screenplay award for “Eighth Grade.”

The major television trophies went to “The Americans,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Homeland” and “Barry” for the 71st Writers Guild Awards, held at dual ceremonies at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif., and the Edison Ballroom in New York City. It was the last major awards show before the Feb. 24 Academy Awards.

“Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” based on the memoir of the late Lee Israel, topped the screenplays for “Black Panther,” “If Beale Street Could Talk” “A Star Is Born”; and “BlacKkKlansman.” Though the script for the comedy-drama — the story of how Israel discovered her talent for forgery — has received an Oscar nomination, “Beale Street” and “BlacKkKlansman” were regarded as the front-runners. It appears that the tale of the travails and redemption of a professional writer clearly resonated with Hollywood writers.

“I want to thank Lee,” Holofcener said in her acceptance. “She’d probably be sitting in the room judging all of us. She though she was the smartest person in the room and she probably was.”

A stunned Burnham credited star Elsie Fisher for his winning the WGA award. Burnham won over Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma”; Adam McKay’s “Vice”; Bryan Woods, Scott Beck, and John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place”; and Peter Farrelly, Nick Vallelonga, and Brian Currie’s “Green Book.” “Roma,” “Vice” and “Green Book” are all nominated for Academy Awards along with “The Favourite” and “First Reformed” while “Eight Grade” did not receive an Oscar nod.

“Eighth Grade,” which stars Fisher as an awkward teen dealing with the final week of eighth grade, also won the first-time Directors Guild of America Award for Burnham on Feb. 2. The film is also up for four Spirit Awards on Feb. 23.

“To the other nominees in the category — Have fun at the Oscars, losers!” Burnham joked in his acceptance. “No, I prepared nothing. This all belongs to Elsie Fisher who performed the script. No one would care about the script if she hadn’t done it.”

“Eighth Grade” is the first film to win the WGA Original Screenplay award without being nominated for an Academy since Michael Moore’s “Bowling for Columbine” in 2003.

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” won the comedy series award for Kate Fodor, Noah Gardenswartz, Jen Kirkman, Sheila Lawrence, Daniel Palladino and Amy Sherman Palladino. Starring Rachel Brosnahan, “Mrs. Maisel” won the Emmy for best comedy series last year.

The final season of “The Americans” took the drama series award for Peter Ackerman, Hilary Bettis, Joshua Brand, Joel Fields, Sarah Nolen, Stephen Schiff, Justin Weinberger, Joe Weisberg and Tracey Scott Wilson.

Bill Hader and Alec Berg won the episodic comedy award for the opening segment of HBO’s “Barry,” “Chapter One: Make Your Mark” (“Barry”). They also won the new series award.

Stephanie Gillis won the animated award for the “Bart’s Not Dead” episode of “The Simpsons” — which was just renewed for its 31st and 32nd seasons by Fox — and showrunner Alex Gansa took the episodic drama award for the “Paean To The People” segment of “Homeland.” “Bathtubs Over Broadway” took the documentary award and “God of War” won the videogame trophy.

Hulu’s “Castle Rock” won the long-form original award and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” took the adapted long-form trophy. “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” won the comedy-variety series cagtegory.

Chelsea Peretti hosted the West Coast ceremonies while Roy Wood Jr. was the emcee in New York. “All the glitz and glamor of the Oscars without the pressure of public interest,” Peretti said in her intro.

Jordan Peele’s horror-comedy “Get Out” won the WGA Award for original screenplay and James Ivory’s coming-of-age drama “Call Me by Your Name” won for adapted screenplay last year. Both went on to win the Oscar.

The WGA awards are mixed indicator of Oscar sentiment. Six of the last 10 WGA winners have gone on to win Academy awards over the past five years. The awards are decided in voting by the 17,000 members of the WGA.

The West Coast ceremonies included plenty of political commentary. Adam McKay, on receiving the WGA’s Paul Selvin Award for “Vice,” asked for a “beat of silence” for the million people who died during the invasion of Iraq.

Jenji Kohan, recipient of the Paddy Chayefsky Award, was unable to attend due to having to shoot the final episode of “Orange Is the New Black.” She said in a taped message: “I’ve been incredibly lucky to work with enormously funny and kind people. I love the people I work with. Life is too short to work with a******s, by the way. That’s my Public Service Announcement.”
