The Cryptocurrency Travel Diary

A few weeks ago saw the announcement of the start of the Crypto Travel Diary series. This is a series I am doing over the coming year in conjunction with Coin Center in Washington DC.

Over the past year I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Jerry and Peter at Coin Center. They’re bright guys working on some really tough and complicated tech policy issues. With my prior work in DC winding-down, we sat down to try and brainstorm some ways to collaborate. I’d already committed to visit 12 different countries over the coming year. We thought it might be a great opportunity to gather some ‘on the ground’ knowledge about: who is using crypto-currencies/blockchain/tokens; how/why they’re using it; and what’s driving that use. 

This is going to be a really interesting way to find out what is really going-on outside of the DC/NY/SF media bubble. This space moves quickly - and is truly global - so there’s going to be a lot to learn.

Each month I will publish an article on the Coin Center website summarizing what I’ve found over the past month in each city. I’ll be periodically posting photos of people who I meet or interesting things I find on my Twitter as well with the hashtag #PeopleofCrypto.

I’m also going to experiment with Steem.it, which is a social media platform where people reward each other (using the native crypto-currency, Steem or Steem Dollars) for posting useful or interesting content. My profile can be found here. 

I’ll be posting the “Extra” series because I’m receiving too much info to include in the monthly articles or with Twitter’s character limit.

In my opinion Steem is an excellent use case for cryptocurrency and might point toward a more sustainable business model for content production and delivery than the current quasi-indentured servitude that we have ended-up on platforms like Facebook. I encourage readers to go and sign-up for Steem. There’s a queue at the moment - I think partly because the throttling and shadow-banning occurring on many social networks is driving people away. Just be patient and they’ll approve you in a week or so. 

The reception to the announcement has been overwhelmingly positive. I’ve been struck at the friendliness and generosity of the crypto community. Invitations came streaming-in to crash on stranger’s couches and to visit exciting start-ups in various cities. While the itinerary is already set for the next 12 months, with some luck and success, perhaps we can do a second series later next year.
