So amazing to see this photo #benjaminwork posted on FB yesterday - this was 16 years ago in early 2001 during a small follow up event to the first Disrupt The System called Damage Control. I had my first full time (incredibly short lived) salary job at the time, so Mike Weston really took the reins on this one and I actually painted alongside my heroes #mirkoreisser Loomit & #otis.frizzell - I had never been to a festival or a jam but I heard that they happened, particularly throughout Europe and I thought to myself, I don't like my chances of ever getting invited to one, I'm bad at saving money to just go on my own dime but maybe if I put on a festival then sponsors will pay to bring my favourite artists to NZ & then everyone from the scene will have access to see them work or meet them. It's funny thinking back but I lived in St. Kevin's arcade in a room with no toilet & no kitchen - I had no phone, I used to use international calling cards to call these artists on a pay phone outside of Verona! 😂 highly professional operation! I know that the impacts of all of this really pushed the Auckland scene and created one of many platforms for us to showcase our talents - plus the exchange of knowledge from these amazing artists, their direct tuition and seeing the possibilities was incredibly inspiring to a bunch of youngsters barely in our 20's! So in this photo is Daim & Loomit, #benjaminwork #janinetmd & #charlestmd (we are all 20 or 21 here) and Mystery from Sydney, who was actually one of the first overseas writers I ever met when I was 16 & who was super nice & encouraging to me (something I'll never forget!)

For Litea sprayed by Benjamin WORk.
One of eight fence panels that makes up 'the street loves nana'.
This original design is painted by Benjamin WORk. The sewing has been completed by a cast of many - sometimes over coffee and crumpets - captured here is its growth stitch by stitch.
Here's what Benjamin says about his Nana - Litea.
My grandma was such a soft-hearted lady with some tough skin when needed.
She was born on a tiny island, Niuafoou in Tonga. In 1946 her family fled a volcanic eruption to another island group, Vava'u. She sat crossed legged on the floor weaving mats or making Taovala (waist mat) and Ngatu (Tapa) making.
I would watch her and want to join in but was often told that only women created this kind of work. But that did not take away my fascination with Tongan motifs especially the 'Lupe' (dove) that reminds me of her.

Yesterday I popped in to see Benjamin Work at work, painting a mural for a new school that is about to open up in Auckland's Otahuhu - Pacific Advance Senior School - New Zealand's first Pasifika Partnership School that offers education for Years 11, 12 & 13.
His key graphic Tongan symbols were in place along with his love for the colours black and red, but what I was most stoked about, was that there was a new warrior in town and she's a woman! I'm really looking forward to the evolution of this warrior woman.

BENJAMIN WORK | For King And Country - Ma’ae Tu’i mo e Fonua
10 OCTOBER — 22 NOVEMBER
OPENING: FRIDAY 16TH OCT, 6PM with music composed by Max Wehi.
MANGERE ARTS CENTRE - NGĀ TOHU O UENUKU Corner Bader Drive and Orly Avenue, 63 Orly Avenue, Mangere Town Centre
Benjamin's new works reference the ancient semiotic language surrounding chiefly lines found within Tongan artefacts housed in institutes across Europe and mixes it with his own impulses in a contemporary context. He is diverse in his approach and his discussion within his works is situated in a cultural, political and socially engaged space. His diverse practice reflects the 'here and now' and situates practice in a very contemporary Auckland design and art context.
Benjamin Work is a visual artist with a strong foundation in aerosol painting based in Auckland, New Zealand. Benjamin is a core member of the international art collective, TMD. He has worked on diverse projects including large scale public mural commissions, limited edition wine boxes and postage stamps. He has exhibited in Auckland, Miami, Sydney and Tonga where he travels frequently.
