Klöpkeshoes in Berghum, the Netherlands

At the end of the 16th century Protestantism became the predominant religion in the Netherlands. The Reformed Church had a privileged position in relation to other religious movements, and the Catholics had a hard time in particular. From 1633 the Roman Catholic priests were no longer allowed to practice pastoral care.

In these difficult years for the Catholics, the so-called ‘kloppen’ or klöpkes played an important role. Klöpkes were pious women who performed all kinds of tasks to keep the parish work going. The klöpkes maintained communication between the pastor and the parishioners. They warned the faithful when a church service was being held and engaged in religious education. Klöpkes were unmarried and usually lived in a cottage of their own, often in a farmyard. For example, the census of 1748 reads: "Fenne in Vinken bakhuys, een kloppe".

Around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, a Klöpkeshoes could still be found on various farms in Twente. They were homes of unmarried women, who spent much time praying. In the turbulent times of Christianity, they called on Roman Catholics from their devout abodes to attend secret church services, when Roman Catholic church services were banned. They did this by knocking on the doors of the houses, hence the name "klöpke" and "klöpkeshoes" (knock house) for their shelters.
