I want you to be the one ... || Lando Norris 4
I'm in a drabble mood! Finally something's out again, sorry to make you wait so long. I just wanted to write something, because I feel like I haven't written in ages because life's being a bitch right now. Anyway, who's also down for some DJ Lando stuff, because lately, damn. Not proofread!!!
Masterlist
Tumblr media
DJ-ing, one of Lando Norris’ new hobbies ever since he and Martin Garix crossed paths after the Dutch Grand Prix. A DJ set for on the road became his new favorite occupation during long flights. The remaining time he’d spend listening to music, scrolling through Instagram, watching YouTube videos.
It was after the Austin Grand Prix where the two of you met, him entertaining the crowd with his music. You are sipping your drink, watching the crowd from the VIP area you were standing at.
You were a singer, not big, yet, but you were working on it. You had just released your first album, and you felt your fandom growing, as well as your name. You had been invited to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which you gladly accepted, being a Formula One fan yourself.
You raised your drink up in the air, dancing along the music the McLaren driver was blasting through the boxes, the crowd cheering at all the songs. Martijn was watching you, since you were one of his close friends as well. He saw how you were enjoying your time, a proud smile on his face. He had watched you grow, from a young girl that loved to sing, to a woman that was slowly becoming one of the best artists in the world.
‘’What?’’ You were eyeing the Dutch DJ, an eyebrow raised as a smirk appeared on your lips. ‘’Nothing, just glad to see you’re enjoying your time here.’’ He smiled back, winking at you before taking the wheel from Lando.
You and Lando had met just before the party, since he arrived just as you and Martijn were talking. You couldn’t lie, the guy was handsome, sexy even, and him being a DJ and interested in music made you like the driver even more.
‘’That was a hell of a session.’’ You shot a nice smile to the 22-year-old Formula One driver, receiving a mischievous smirk in return. ‘’Thanks, I learned from the best.’’
The rest of the night consisted of dancing, drinking, and being a little too close to the Brit, which you didn’t really mind, and neither did he.
‘’We shouldn’t let anyone find out about this.’’ You whispered; lips pressed against Lando’s as he pushed you against the wall. For sure the both of you had a little too much to drink, causing you to end up in his bed in his room of the Hilton Hotel.
‘’I know, they won’t...’’ He mumbled as his hands moved their way up, quickly taking off your clothes because they had been on your body long enough according to the McLaren driver.
You had kept in contact but promised to not tell anyone about your little hook up, not even Martijn. However, it never stayed with just one hook up. The both of you saw it as a way to relax, and it definitely helped both teams.
Lando was more relaxed at the track, even when people threw hate at him, mostly online. Ever since his breakup with Luisa he had changed, in a good way, according to you. He was more relaxed, more open for new things, spending more time with his friends and just generally happier. The hookups the two of you had just expanded those feelings.
You were also more relaxed going into stressful meetings about your new album, a possible upcoming tour and more PR related things such as interviews and talk shows.
It was at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix when you saw him again, dressed in his race suit, the black fireproof top doing his golden tan good justice. His curly hair quite messy, due to the high humidity at the track, it only made you think of moments you were the one to be responsible for the messy hair, and not the weather. You bite your bottom lip at the image, and simply take a deep breath to shake those thoughts out of your mind.
The day went by quickly, and you hadn’t gotten the chance to talk to Lando a lot due to the fact he was quite busy. It was only at the after party when you got the chance to talk to the P3 man himself.
‘’Congrats on your podium.’’ You embraced the Brit in a hug, the scent of his Dior Sauvage perfume filling your nostrils immediately. God, so good.
‘’Thanks, glad to have you here to witness that.’’ He smiled, his hand moving towards your lower back to guide you to the VIP area of the party.
‘’Let’s make this party one to remember.’’
‘’Definitely.’’
After a few too many drinks, you and Lando found yourself in a familiar situation, tangled up with each other, hands all over each other, lips smashing together. But that’s it, nothing more than kisses and cuddles, no sex.
‘’I’ve been wanting to ask you something.’’ He whispered in between kisses, making you pull him even closer to you.
‘’Couldn’t you’ve done that when we were both sober?’’ You groaned as your hands cupped his cheeks, your lips disconnecting so you could look into his eyes.
‘’I don’t know if I would have the guts to do it sober.’’ He slurred, a sigh escaping his lips, followed by his tongue wetting his perfectly swollen lips.
‘’Lando…’’ You whispered, not actually believing what was happening right now. ‘’No, please let me finish.’’ He says, his hand raising, index finger sticking up to place it against your lips.
‘’I have been thinking for a while now, and I’m sure now, I think.’’ He started. ‘’I want to take things to the next level, you know? I’ve been doing it for a while now and I want you to be a part of this journey with me.’’ He mumbled, his finger still in front of your lips.
‘’I want you to be the one, I want to make a remix of a song of yours.’’ He then says, smiling up at you. You did the same, a big smile making him remove his index finger for it to be replaced with his lips.
‘’Yes, that would be freaking awesome.’’ You whispered against his soft lips. ‘’Hopefully we’ll remember this deal tomorrow morning.’’ You mumbled as your hands reached for his hair.
‘’Oh trust me, I’ll remember.’’ And this was just the beginning, the beginning of a partnership, and not just in the studio.

The MTC | Lando Norris
Part of the Sweet Dreams series
previous chapter: Abu Dhabi (III) word count: 2.5k words warnings: slow burn, fluff english is not my first language
Tumblr media
WOKING, ENGLAND - DECEMBER 15TH 2020 You are woken up by the intruding sound of your alarm. You hit the snooze button, only to realize you don’t have time to snooze. You jump out of bed and get straight to the bathroom to get ready. You gather some clothes and put them into a suitcase so that you can hit the road. You walk to the nearest bus station and wait for the bus. On your way to the bus station, you had walked into a local coffee shop to grab some breakfast. It didn’t take you long to get from the hotel to the McLaren Technology Centre, but the walk from the bus station to the building itself was the longest part of your journey. With your coffee in one hand and your suitcase in the other, you walk towards the building. You’re passed by some cars when suddenly one of the cars slows down and drives at the speed of your walking. Lando thought he was hallucinating when he saw you walk on the sidewalk, but when he rolled his window down he was amazed to see it was you. “What are you doing here?” Lando asks after you’re greeted by him. “I’m here for work, obviously.” You respond as if it was just another day at the office for you. Lando continues to follow you as you continue to walk toward the MTC. “What?” Lando says, but he has to turn right to park his car in the massive car park. You wait for Lando at the entrance. “What for work?” Lando asks once he makes it to the entrance and you two walk in together. “I don’t know yet, but probably to shoot something with the new merchandise.” You and Lando check-in. “If I had known, I would have offered you to stay or at least pick you up this morning.” Lando and you are waiting around the boulevard for Charlotte to come pick you up. “It’s fine, public transport is there for a reason.” You say when Charlotte walks up to you. “Great both of you are here..” Without your knowledge, you follow Charlotte up the stairs to all the different conference rooms. “..Y/N, Zak needs you in his office for a split second, and Lando we need you in the conference room.” Charlotte says as if you had any idea where Zak’s office would be. You walk like a headless chicken through the hallway, you soon pass Zak’s office and knock on the door. As you step into Zak’s office you notice all the memorable times displayed behind his desk. You can’t help but take a closer look. Once you have taken in every detail, you sit down to talk with Zak about your schedule for today. Lando, who was in a few rooms down the hallway, was going through the same thing with Charlotte. After the heads up from Zak, he takes you around the MTC for a little tour. You went to the MTC with Lando a few months ago and he guaranteed you a tour, but he never got the time to show you around. Although you felt honored by the fact that the CEO of McLaren showed you around the MTC, you wished it was Lando who was in front of you speaking about the history of the many different cars on the boulevard. Zak finishes up his tour and takes you to a room filled with the new merchandise. As you walk towards the room, you pass Lando, he was still sat in the conference room. You exchange looks quickly, before you head into the room. Lando was signing merchandise for any giveaways in the future. You were left alone in the room with the merchandise to see which ones fitted you the best and what combinations would look good on camera.
After some test shots with the merchandise and a whole lot of informative presentations, you head towards Charlotte’s office to get changed. You walk up the stairs when you bump into Lando. “Hi, you want to grab lunch together?” “Yes sure, meet you in the cafeteria?” You as you also needed to put some things away. Lando nods and you both continue in your own ways. Charlotte was stood at the top of the stairs and overheard everything. “So you and Lando?” She asks once you reach the top. “What is there?” You play off. After last weekend it was clear to you what was on people’s minds all the time. “That is what I want to know as well.” Charlotte opens the door to her little office for you to get changed. “Charlotte there is nothing between us.” You change back into your own shirt as you didn’t want to mess up the new merchandise. “If you say so..” You two walk back to the stairs, “..but to grab lunch together, doesn’t seem like nothing to me.” Charlotte walks down the stairs ahead of you. You don’t react to Charlotte, as you don’t even know yourself what is going on. You didn’t know what to expect from the cafeteria on a work day, as you have only seen it being used for an event. It took you some time to find Lando in the crowd, but once you find him you both make your way to the buffet. When you sit down to enjoy your lunch Lando asks, “Why did you never tell me about your contract?” “I have no idea. I didn’t think it would go through, and once I put the signature down it never felt like the right time to tell you.” It never occurred to you to tell him, mainly because once you were with him he was the only thing on your mind. “Muppet, any time is the right time. It’s only right for me to congratulate you then!..” He gives you a side-hug as there was a table in between you two. You are a bit startled as you didn’t expect him to care about all this. “..so how does it feel to have your dream job?” He asks you before he takes a bite from  his lunch. “It feels surreal.” You admit, it still hadn’t hit you. After all those months you are finally working for McLaren, but what surprised you the most at the moment was that Lando remembered after all those moments.
After lunch, it is time for Lando to shoot with some of his own merchandise. You went int the opposite direction as you had to change once again. You knew you would shoot with Lando in a second, but since had time to spare you told Charlotte you would be outside the MTC. It took you some time to find the shoot locations within the MTC once they needed you, but once you walk into the room the sight of you made a smile form on his lips. “What are you doing in here? I thought you were outside to take pictures or something.” He teases you, Lando didn’t know you two would shoot together and was startled as you walked into the room. You playfully punch him, “Are you trying to flirt with me, Norris?” “What if I actually was?” Lando replies shortly after. You both are taken by surprise by your own words and a strange feeling forms in your stomach. As if she knew something was happening, Charlotte walks in. “Oh sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt.” She says as she notices how close you two were. There was no time for any explanations as the crew barged in. You take a couple of pictures apart from each other before they ask you to pose together. It wasn’t something new to you, to shoot with other people, or with boys in particular, but to shoot with Lando made you nervous as if it was your first shoot ever. As the team is adjusting some of the settings and surroundings, you and Lando decide to walk past all the cars in the archive. Lando starts to tell you about the different cars, as he notices your interest. No matter what the two of you would be doing, Charlotte always would find a way to tease either one of you about it. “We have enough pictured with you Y/N,” Charlie announces after he has taken another few photos of you. You are saying your goodbyes to the team and thank them for their work, when Lando walks up to you. “Let me drive you back,” He proposes as he wants to walk off with you. “We still need you, Lando.” Charlie says as he turns around on his chair to take his eyes from his laptop screen filled with pictures. “I will get back by public transport, it’s fine.” “Please Y/N, I feel stupid for earlier and last night?” It was as if he would drop down to his knees any second now to beg you. You just accept the ride and Lando gets back to his shoot. Charlotte and you walk towards her office, “Oh Y/N, please. I’m such a stupid boy.” Charlotte mocks Lando as you make your way up the stairs. You nudge her shoulder and tell her to shut up. “Don’t lie to yourself. Everyone around you two can see it, except for the two of you.” Charlotte opens her office and you two sit down on the opposite side from each other. Now you have to wait for Lando to be done. It’s silent for a while until Charlotte couldn’t take it any longer and thinks it’s time for you to realize what is going on. “You don’t see the way you look at him..” You look up from your laptop and immediately feel the heat reach your cheeks, “..I don’t care if you two have decided to keep things private, but we all see things you two don’t see.” Charlotte continues to explain herself. “You think Zak would offer me a job if Lando and I would be in a relationship.” You say in an ironic matter. “He wouldn’t be bothered. There are enough co-workers who are in a long-term relationship, who are constantly working together and Zak knows about all of it.” Charlotte responds to you. You hadn’t thought about it in such a way. You had met a lot of new people over the weekend and learned a lot of things about them, but never did it come to your mind that some were in a relationship due to their workplace. “Well, either way. Lando and I are not in a relationship, end of the conversation.” And with that, you close the speculations of your love-life, although you did leave the query about your feelings towards Lando unanswered.
After a long day at the MTC, you finally get to go back to your hotel. On your way back you start to feel hungry. “You hungry?” Lando asks as he also felt hungry. You nod your head excessively. It was late at night but with the both of you in hunger, you make a stop at the Mc Donalds. You were having such a good time in the parking lot, talking nonsense with Lando, that you completely forgot about the time and once you are ready to get back on the road, you realize your hotel isn’t allowing anyone in at this hour. “You can stay at my place?” Lando offers, it wasn’t like you had any other option. “If that is no problem with you?” “I wouldn’t offer if it was a problem, would I?..” You chuckle, “..to my place, it is then.” Lando turns around on the road and now you’re heading towards his place. It wasn’t the most ridiculous idea after all. When you get to Lando’s place you two immediately head upstairs. Lando shows you where the bathroom is and enlightens you can take a shower if you want. He then leads you to the guest bedroom. “Is there anything you need?” Lando asks once you have settled a little bit. “Uh, I don’t have any of my stuff. So do you have a pair of shorts or sweat pants?” You felt a strange feeling appear in your stomach, and you don’t know if this was a new level of nerves or if it was something completely else. “Sure, you need a shirt as well?” “No, I have plenty of those.” You say as you hold up the package with the new merchandise McLaren gave you. When Lando gets back with the sweat pants you remember how you were freezing the past few nights. “Do you also have an extra blanket?” Lando suggests you come with him as he didn’t know what kind of blanket you wanted. As he opens his closet your eyes immediately fall on the blanket covered with George’s face. Lando follows your gaze and notices you are staring at his George blanket. “Don’t question it.” “I won’t” and you both start to burst out in laughter. You take one of the blankets without any faces and head to bed. You want to close the door when you hear Lando from across the hall. “Y/N?..” You open up the door a little more so you could see his face. “..is there anywhere you need to be tomorrow?” “I’m volunteering at a dog shelter not too far from here.” You thought Lando wanted to know so he was aware of your alarm. “Do you need a ride?” “You won’t take a no, will you?..” You chuckle, as he only shrugs his shoulders. “..fine, I would love to if you did.” You accept his offer without any form of bicker as it is late in the night.
It didn’t take you long to fall asleep. You don’t know if it was the long day you have had that knocked you out or the comfort of the blanket Lando gave you. You knew for sure that you hadn’t slept this peacefully in a long time.
WOKING, ENGLAND - DECEMBER 16TH 2020  It was the middle of the night and Lando was wide awake. In fact, he hadn’t even closed an eye since the moment he laid down in bed. It was strange to him how you were in his holder, not too far from him. You were there, something he has been longing for so long. Yet he still felt the desire to be with you, to lay down with you and take you in his arms.

You should be aware that it is regarded as one of the wealthiest nations in the world. Whatever it is, the UAE visa has it. This location, which caters to tourists, has a wide range of adventure activities, exotic hotels, architectural marvels, and museums.
HERE’S THE LIST OF THE TOP PLACES TO VISIT IN UAE
Dubai
Tumblr media
One of the few destinations that tourists frequently choose to travel to in the UAE is Dubai. This location is ideal for your trip because you have a lot of attractions to see. Here are some of the must-see landmarks in Dubai that are popular UAE attractions:
Burj Khalifa
Tumblr media
The Burj Khalifa, which has been called a "living wonder" and "vertical city," is a popular tourist destination. The world's highest structure rises beautifully from the rough desert. This structure is 2716.5 feet tall and has 200 or more stories. It is one of the "must-see" locations in the UAE.
Dubai Parks and Resorts
Tumblr media
For any tourist, the resorts' and the parks' own cleanliness is a major draw. The numerous rides that are available make this place ideal for children. Given the abundance of food alternatives, you could easily spend the entire day here. In addition, you can go to many aquariums to learn more in-depth about the wide variety of aquatic life.
Abu Dhabi
Since Abu Dhabi is the capital of the UAE, there are many interesting UAE attractions there. Abu Dhabi has some of the top tourist destinations in the UAE, with everything from a variety of outdoor activities to countless shopping centers. You can choose between cultural and theme tours or, more likely, only cultural trips. In addition, you can go sailing, cruising, or on water tours. Air trips are an option for those who enjoy flying. Off-road tours are also available in Abu Dhabi.
Tumblr media
Falcon Hospital is a location that attracts people from all walks of life. It is ideal for anyone who enjoys birds because you learn a great deal about various bird species. In this hospital, you can learn how to care for a falcon. The Ferrari World is another location that is regarded as "interesting" and "pleasant" by most tourists. You can experience the thrills you seek through rides and speed.
Hajar Mountains
Tumblr media
One of the most popular tourist attractions is this hilly area sandwiched between Oman and the United Arab Emirates. It is advised to give yourself enough time when visiting this location because there is a lot to take in. The Hajar Mountains are well-known for hiking, trekking, and climbing in addition to their picturesque views, making them a favorite vacation spot for thrill-seekers. It is regarded as Arabia's Grand Canyon.
Al-Ain
Tumblr media
Due to its natural springs and palm trees, the oasis city of Garden City is located in the east of Oman, inland from the border. Abu Dhabi is only 30 minutes away, making it a simple day excursion from the capital city. Discover the history of the entire UAE by visiting Al-Ain, one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Jebel Hafeet
Tumblr media
If you're heading to Al-Ain, be sure not to miss Jebel Hafeet because it's a fantastic road trip destination from Abu Dhabi and the nearby cities and isn't that distant from the city (it takes around 20 minutes to get to its uppermost point). Additionally, it is the highest point in the UAE, so you can expect a spectacular perspective of the entire region.
Al Bastakiya
Tumblr media
One of Bur Dubai's most established and historic residential neighborhoods is Al Bastakiya. You may learn about Dubai's cultural legacy going back to its construction in 1690 at this location. This location provides a welcome respite from Dubai's technology and modernism. For everyone who enjoys history, Al Bastakiya can be regarded as a "must." There are interesting wind turbines, small streets, and historic-looking buildings. All of this has the potential to be fascinating and thrilling. Here in Bastakiya, the town itself is the ideal site to visit.
Sharjah
Tumblr media
In terms of locations in Sharjah, there are numerous museums, parks, landmarks, and other attractions to pick from. The Sharjah Fort, also known as Al Hisn Sharjah, is among the fascinating locations around. Many tourists find this fort appealing since it provides them with information about Sharjah's past. It is amazing to go through this fort now that it has recently undergone restoration. A visit to this fort makes exploring the city more enjoyable.
Another location that families and kids can visit is the Sharjah Aquarium. You might watch the locals doing the customary dance for the general public in addition to the cafeteria. Every cent paid was worth it for the exhibits.
Ras al-Khaimah
Tumblr media
The beaches on the Gulf are a draw for Ras al-Khaimah. The National Museum houses archaeology and local history exhibits and is housed in a centuries-old fort. Jabal Jais is one of the towns in Ras al-Khaimah that may be visited and enjoyed. Jabal Jais must be visited if you want to see the natural beauty of undeveloped mountains. Enjoy a drink as the sun sets and get a sense of what a "thorough" vacation in Jebel Jais is like.
Fujairah
Tumblr media
The Fujairah Fort, the Dibba Society for Culture Arts and Theatre, and Al Hayl Castle are a few of the must-see locations in Fujairah. The iconic fort in Fujairah is encircled by a man-made lake that is filled with seawater and rocks. This fort offers some spectacular views. Although it was built in 1500, the fort is still in good condition. For all those who enjoy history, this is the place to be.
In the midst of numerous mountains is the history of Al Hayl Castle. This fort belonged to the old Sheikh of Fujairah. Once you've ascended the tower, you can see the entire area. The tranquility here gives the impression that you are thousands of kilometers from Dubai.
Sir Bani Yas Island
Tumblr media
Al Gharbia is an area in the UAE that includes Sir Bani Yas Island. It is dominated by the Arabian Wildlife Park. Additionally, you have the opportunity to see the many archaeological monuments, such as the Christian monastery and the Salt Dome Hills.
The wildlife in the national park belongs to uncommon species. You may spy on around 13,000 different species, which is a genuine delight for both kids and adults. The golden jackal, wild caracal cats, gazelles, deer, mountain sheep, and approximately 200 kinds of birds and bats, among many other endangered species, can be found in large herds.
Reasons for Traveling
One big advantage of choosing to travel is learning. You gain fresh information and have the opportunity to learn new skills. You must understand that travel can teach you more than even graduating from high school. What better country than the UAE, where you may experience several cultures, to do this? Compared to reading all those textbooks and taking many tests, this way of learning tends to stick with a person longer.
Tumblr media
You have plenty of time and room to reflect and learn more about yourself after getting an Emirates tourist visa. You encounter many difficulties while traveling, which can make you more resilient. Being adventurous is simple in the UAE because there are so many different adventures to choose from. When planning a trip to the UAE, keep in mind that there are kid-friendly excursions, museums, water parks, shopping malls, and entertainment options available.
The availability of connecting flights and a variety of transportation options make traveling to the UAE convenient after you’ll get an online Emirates visa. You only need to make a small amount of preparation and purchase your ticket to visit this amazing location.

Murder of the Orient Express! Railway Lines Once Connected The Middle East. Now The Tracks That Joined Continents Lie in Wreckage
— December 18th 2021 | Medina, Oujda and Lydda | The Economist
Tumblr media
She left her husband digging for pottery in Syria’s northern desert, handed her passport to the uniformed Turk at Nusaybin, and, as the steam whistle blew, clambered aboard the Express bound for Aleppo. On arrival, she checked into the Baron, the city’s only first-class hotel, and in room 203 began writing what is probably the most famous mystery novel of all time.
“It was five o’clock on a winter’s morning in Syria. Alongside the platform at Aleppo stood the train grandly designated in railway guides as the Taurus Express. It consisted of a kitchen and dining-car, a sleeping-car and two local coaches.” So Agatha Christie began “Murder on the Orient Express”. Set on the homeward leg of her journey through the Middle East, it conjures a lost world of interconnecting cabins, liveried conductors, embroidered handkerchiefs and passengers who dressed for dinner.
The victim is an American swindler stabbed a dozen times in his sleeper car. But though the tale made Christie the world’s best-selling novelist, it was a footnote compared to the crime unfolding around her—the dismemberment of the vast railway network that tied the Middle East together.
The passengers aboard the 0500 to Istanbul came from Baghdad, Kirkuk and Mosul. They might also have come from Khartoum, Alexandria, Jerusalem, Damascus and Basra. Maps from the time show a region criss-crossed with tracks. For the supposed “sick man of Europe”, the Ottoman empire in its last decades was remarkably energetic. In 1888, Sultan Abdelhamid II embarked on the most ambitious engineering project in six centuries of Ottoman rule, to link the four corners of his empire by rail.
Abdelhamid began with Islam’s holy sites. With the help of Christian and Jewish entrepreneurs, he cut a line from the Mediterranean through Judea’s limestone hills to Jerusalem. It deposited its first load of pilgrims opposite the al-Aqsa mosque in 1892. Eight years later, he commissioned a track 15 times longer linking Damascus, the traditional starting point of the haj, or Muslim pilgrimage, to Medina, where the Prophet Muhammad is buried. Completed in 1908, the line changed the pilgrimage from a perilous 40-day camel trek through Arabia’s deserts to a cushioned three-day ride. The Damascus terminal, renamed Allah’s Gate, was a showpiece of Islamic baroque.
From Morocco to Iraq Not a Single Train Crosses Borders
This construction accompanied other feats. In the empire’s twilight years, the sultans connected three booming Levantine ports—Tripoli, Beirut and Haifa—to ancient silk-road cities such as Damascus, Homs and Aleppo. On the eve of the first world war, the sultans allied with the German Kaiser to build a line from Berlin to Baghdad, bypassing Britain’s choke point, the Suez canal. German engineers helped bridge the Taurus mountains in the last weeks of the war—too late to reinforce fronts against the British pushing north.
Tumblr media
The European empires that overran the Middle East implemented much of what the Ottomans left on the drawing board. By the 1930s passengers could travel from the English channel to Cairo with only three changes of train. The last leg, in third class, cost the equivalent of about two days’ work for a labourer. It left Haifa daily at 0830, steamed south to the Mediterranean port of Gaza by lunchtime, turned west into Sinai and arrived in the Egyptian capital by 2230.
From there, travellers could continue aboard one of the first air-conditioned carriages along the Nile to Luxor’s Valley of the Kings and on to Sudan. “Direct and quickest route to Damascus, Beyrout, Baalbek and Aleppo,” read a Palestine Railways brochure advertising the connections from Haifa. Sami Abu Shehadeh, a Palestinian historian and member of the Israeli Knesset, or parliament, says that “from Jaffa station you could commute across the Arab world.”
The Suspects
The Middle East had been a cosmopolitan hotchpotch of languages, ethnicities and sects since civilisation began. The railroads tossed them together like fruit in a bowl. Christie’s 13 suspects were “of all classes and nationalities”. On these trains, Muslim pilgrims heading from Tulkarm shared carriages with Jewish workers on package holidays from Haifa to Damascus that were organised by the Zionist trade union, the Histadrut. The Lebanese tourist board competed by printing adverts for its ski resorts in Hebrew. As a child Mahmoud Zahar, a leader of the Palestinian Islamist movement, Hamas, remembers catching the sleeper from his mother’s hometown of Alexandria to Gaza. The staff were no less diverse. Jews and Arabs worked under British command at Palestine Railways, along with 30 other nationalities. On Christie’s Express, the conductor was a Frenchman.
Tumblr media
Seventy years later the tracks that joined continents lie in wreckage. From Morocco to Iraq not a single train crosses borders. Rusting carriages and engine hulks litter the sands. Cypress trees sprout between Lebanon’s lines. Rails were smelted into bullets like ploughshares into swords. Sleepers reinforced trench walls, and stations and repair yards became barracks and prisons. As in the murder on the Orient Express, the network fell victim to multiple blows. Tracing culpability is one of the region’s great whodunits.
The first suspect was another guest at the Baron, in the room next to Christie’s. For much of the first world war Thomas Edward Lawrence, a British intelligence officer, connived behind enemy lines to rupture the Hijaz railway to harry Ottoman troops. He raised a Bedouin band, fired them with jihadist zeal, blew up 79 bridges and derailed dozens of trains. Back home “Lawrence of Arabia” was a hero. His tactics were those of a terrorist. The wounded, many of them civilians, were left to die in the gorges. “This killing and killing of Turks is horrible,” Lawrence wrote in a letter home.
That said, the British have alibis. They built railways in the Middle East before and after the Ottomans. Robert Stephenson, an English pioneer of the steam train, began laying Egypt’s tracks in the 1850s. As British troops advanced they extended the lines.
The investigation into Lawrence reveals other leads. Many of his Bedouin recruits hated the Hijaz line for breaking their monopoly on transporting pilgrims and grain. “Jahash al-Sultan,” they called it, the Sultan’s donkey. It brought foreign mores, too, that disturbed time-honoured codes. Under the puritanical Al Saud dynasty, the Bedouin ripped up tracks from their new border to Medina. Follow the line south of Jordan today and for almost 800km all that remains is the naked embankment snaking past rust-coloured mountains. In places, wind-swept Ottoman stations and forts wait for a train that last passed a century ago.
Yet the Saudis also have alibis. Once the Bedouin carved out his kingdom, King Abdelaziz Ibn Saud slaughtered them in their hundreds. The Saudis point to other beneficiaries from the Bedouin assaults. Britain and France had long sought ways to interrupt the flow of their Muslim subjects to Mecca and limit their exposure to anti-colonial Islamists.
Zionists could also be found at the crime scene. The more militant considered Britain’s railways an iron spider’s web ensnaring their land, and they killed scores in dozens of attacks. On the “Night of the Trains”, on November 1st 1945, the three main Zionist militias blew up the lines at more than 150 points and planted bombs in the stations at Jerusalem and Lydda junction. Seven months later, a “Night of the Bridges” destroyed ten bridges connecting Palestine’s railways and roads to the Arab world. A website honouring the fighters of the Irgun, the militia headed by a future prime minister, Menachem Begin, still hails the achievement: “The operation achieved its objective, and the country was cut off from all its neighbours.”
The dismantlement continued with Israel’s independence in 1948. Israel blew up the bridge at Rosh HaNikra to cut off Beirut and plugged the tunnel through the South Lebanon hills, severing the line that linked Europe to Africa. The Israeli government also dissolved the Palestine Railway Company and dismissed many non-Jewish workers. After the 1967 war Israel abandoned the Ottoman lines in the West Bank, used Sinai’s tracks to fortify its Bar Lev defences along the Suez canal and locked Gaza—the old crossroads between continents—behind turrets and walls.
But the Israelis also have alibis. Had they not broken the lines, they say, the Arabs would have smuggled arms and men to destroy them. The Israelis argue that it was Arabs who undid the network. Palestinian militants targeted rail infrastructure during their revolt against the British in the 1930s. And with self-destructive zeal, Palestinians ripped up the last of Gaza’s rails to make tunnels and rockets.
Regional conflicts and civil wars finished the victim off. The French controlled their North African holdings with railways fanning out from Algiers. But after independence Morocco and Algeria battled over Western Sahara, and in 1994 the trans-Maghreb train to Tunis stopped 1,300km short. Two border towns, Oujda and Maghnia, face each other, united by ethnicity, religion, language and intermarriage but divided by army barricades. Their stations, once trading posts, are terminals. “Halte police,” read the no-entry signs. Peacocks pick at rubbish between the lines.
Tumblr media
How It Was Once Possible To Cross the Middle East By Train
The last train left Tripoli for Beirut at the start of Lebanon’s civil war in 1975. Syria’s invading forces converted Rayak, the big junction and repair centre near its border, into a military base and turned an adjacent hotel into torture chambers. Israel’s offensive in 1982 finished off what remained of the line to Beirut.
For years, Agatha Christie’s Express was the stubborn survivor. The leg to Baghdad folded in the 1980s, but the night train from Aleppo to Turkey limped on. Then came Syria’s civil war in 2011. It terminated all but a fraction of Syria’s 2,450km of track. The platform still stands in Aleppo where Christie’s “Murder” began, but her route east to Iraq was damaged in the bombardment of Islamic State. Mosul station was destroyed. The Arab Union of Railways dissolved in 2016. After a spate of mortar attacks, Christie’s writing retreat, the Baron hotel, shut its doors in 2014.
Like the 12 killers aboard the Orient Express, the region’s rulers each had a motive. The colonial powers carved up the Middle East. The generals who succeeded them prioritised their parcels of territory over the common market and culture developed across millennia. Tinpot dictators saw cosmopolitanism and connectivity as threats to new national identities. Religion lost its universality and shrank into cults tied to plots of land. Syria expelled its French inspectors. Iraq’s railway administration sacked its Jewish managers. Bereft of expertise, many lines fell into disrepair. Train lines became like ancient silk-road souqs and bazaars, relics of a past when riches came from regional trade rather than the rent of a single raw material, be it oil, gas or phosphates. Defence came not from neighbourly relations but from a superpower far away.
Tumblr media
The new love was the motor car. In 2019 Egypt paved over its Victorian tramway between downtown Cairo and the suburb of Heliopolis. To cover their tracks, the culprits gentrified the ruins. In 2014 hipsters turned Beirut’s Mar Mikhael station into a bar. Israel converted the old terminals in Jaffa and Jerusalem into nightclubs and swanky restaurants. With a nostalgic nod, each makeover sends the message that the original use had reached the end of the line.
The Verdict
Christie’s novel ends when the crime is solved. The story of the Middle East, though, never ends. As the oil age draws to a close, there are signs the region is rediscovering the value of its old connections. Many states plan to diversify their economies towards trade and industries such as tourism. Rulers worry they can no longer rely on America and are investing in regional diplomacy. And after the horrors of sectarian bloodletting, identity politics is losing its currency. Governments and political movements are cautiously rediscovering the benefits of religious multiplicity. Jewish communities are sprouting across the Middle East. Israel has its first Muslim party in government.
In tandem, railway branches are reaching outwards again. Morocco opened the region’s first high-speed network in 2018, with plans to extend it to west Africa within 20 years. “With access and movement comes trade,” says Muhammad Rabie Khilie, the head of Morocco’s rails. “It’s the spinal cord of development.” A century after the Saudis smashed the Hijaz line, trains with cars built in Spain race between the holy cities at 300km/hr. A line to Jordan’s border should open in March, seemingly preparing for the day of peace when via Israel passengers can reach the Mediterranean.
Harbouring similar hopes, Israel is building four lines, stretching tantalisingly eastward. If the Chinese company operating the Haifa container terminal has its way, at least one line will extend China’s belt-and-road via Jordan. Competing for influence, Iran says it has agreed with Iraq to fill the 32km gap in its railway to southern Iraq, also with Chinese help, and from there along the old silk road to Syria. In October Iraq reopened the line to Mosul and announced plans to push on to Turkey. There are plans for lines linking the Arab states along the Gulf. Egypt is pursuing a massive expansion, which includes the world’s largest monorail and new lines to Libya, Sudan and Saudi Arabia. Unlike Christie’s American swindler, the Orient and Taurus Express trains, and with them the Levantine dream, may yet ride the railways again. ■
