A Glass of Whine
Everyone knows Napa Valley in California as a major wine producing region. Lesser known, but still important, is Sonoma County. It’s a little further north than Napa, but it still produces loads of high quality wine. In fact, some of the best Chardonnay in the United States comes from Sonoma. Specifically, a river valley there, known as the Russian River Valley.
A few weeks ago, we had a wine tasting dinner at the restaurant, and one of the wines featured was a Russian River Valley Chardonnay. Our social media manager posted about the event, listing both the wines that would be presented, and the foods that would be paired with them. Pretty par for the course, really.
But.
Someone went into the comments on the post about the wine dinner, and launched into a tirade about, How dare we have wine with the word “Russian” in the name on our menu, and that if we didn’t remove that wine from the selection and then issue a combination public apology and condemnation of Russia, then that meant that we were, in effect, openly and publicly supporting the actions of Vladamir Putin and the deaths of Ukrainians.
Our social media manager quietly deleted the post, then blocked that person from responding to us on every social media that we are on.

Topics I am researching for a future assignment:
Music and culture
The experience of being a fan of music
Fandom and music
The importance of fans in music
Why music is one of the most important things in my life
Why 1980s music is one of the most innovative decades
Goth isn't dead, it's just underground
A History of Darkwave music
A history of Depeche Mode's enduring passionate fanbase, despite their underground status
2. Something I did this week:
I went to lunch with my dad at Burger Patch in Davis. It's one of my favorite restaurants, especially as a vegan. It was good to see him. I'm very close to my dad, and ever since I moved out last October to Davis it's been difficult not being able to see him as often so it was good to have lunch with him and spend time with him.
3.
 Two quotes:
“And while it remains difficult to forecast how technology trends will play out, business leaders can plan ahead better by watching the development of new technologies, anticipating how companies could utilize them, and understanding the factors that impact innovation and adoption.” (Analytics Insight)
“These represent the upcoming shift in application design and development, where consumers will utilise a single app to manage the majority of systems in an enterprise ecosystem. Over 50% of the world’s population will utilise superapps on a daily basis, predicts Gartner.” (Analytics Insight)
4.
This week I am researching the Tubbs fire, for my American Studies Seminar on Natural Disasters. I am writing a paper on the wildfire and the communication methods used in communicating the imminent danger of the wildfire to local communities in 2017. I am using these resources:
Gabbert, Bill. "Kincade Fire burns into two fires from 2017." Wildfire Today. October 29, 2019. https://wildfiretoday.com/tag/tubbs-fire/ Links to an external site. Accessed February 1, 2023.
Barber, Phil. "A Walk in the Ashes of the Tubbs Fire: Five years after Sonoma County's worst disaster." The Press Democrat. October 3, 2022. https://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/news/a-walk-in-the-ashes-of-the-tubbs-fire-five-years-later-in-sonoma-county/ Links to an external site.  Accessed February 2, 2023.
5. Links to five or more discovered resources (including articles, podcasts, books, websites)
6. Response to a compelling paragraph from a news story concerning Silicon Valley: Get Ready to Meet the ChatGPT Clones
"Last week, LLaMA, an AI model developed by Meta—and similar to the one at the core of ChatGPT—was leaked online after being shared with some academic researchers. The system could be used as a building block in the creation of a chatbot, and its release sparked worry among those who fear that the AI systems known as large language models, and chatbots built on them like ChatGPT, will be used to generate misinformation or automate cybersecurity breaches. Some experts argue that such risks may be overblown, and others suggest that making the technology more transparent will in fact help others guard against misuses."
This paragraph stood out to me, particularly the part about the fear of it spreading misinformation. I think this is a valid concern; with the AI's ability to generate its own content in response to a user-generated question, a question created with the intent of creating misinformation, I think this could be a problem when it comes to politics.
7. Response to an assigned reading: https://journalism.columbia.edu/best-journalism-advice
I really enjoyed reading the advice given in this article. The one that stood out to me the most was the idea of doing in depth research before, and doing in depth interviews. When I started doing journalism I think that was something I underestimated a little, which is why I struggled with some pieces at first. I think with some time, I realized that doing proper interviews and research will help a story idea appear with ease, and this is now something I apply to all writing, not necessarily just journalism, and have found ideas come much more easier to me now.
8. An anecdote about something you did this week:
I started meeting up with my boyfriend at the Shields Library Reading Room to do study sessions on Monday and Wednesday's from 12:00 to 1:30 before going to journalism. It's been a way to spend time together while doing other things, but has been also a way for me to learn more about him as a student and his interests in relation to his major, and to understand him more intellectually as we've been having conversations about linguistic anthropology and I understand a new subject more, as well as his passions.

Fresh Wood Fired Pizza
Tumblr media
Whether you are in the mood for a pizza, or just want to try something new, you should consider fresh wood fired pizza. These pizzas are baked with a crisp crust, and you’ll find that the inside is soft and mushy. This pizza isn’t charred on the outside, and you’ll find truffle mushrooms on top.
Crispy on the outside
Creating the perfect crispy on the outside fresh wood fired pizza takes time and effort. You need the right ingredients, the right tools, and the skill to make the perfect crust. The best pizza crust is made by baking in an oven that gets hot enough to evaporate the water in the pizza dough.
You need to preheat your oven for 45–60 minutes before cooking. This will ensure that your oven is at its optimum temperature for cooking.
Pizza dough can take a long time to cook if it is thick. It also takes longer for the toppings to bake into the dough. You can also make your crust crispier by adding oil. Oil conducts heat well and helps the dough to cook faster.
Soft on the inside
Getting the right texture on the inside of a fresh wood fired pizza is important. There are a few ways to get the texture you want.
If you want to create a crust that is soft on the inside, you’ll want to prebake your pizza dough. This will make the crust more crisp and give the inside a more tender feel. It’s also good for cooking toppings evenly.
Another way to get the perfect crust is to use a pizza pan. This will help the base cook faster. When using a pan, you’ll also find that the base is cooked more evenly and will retain more nutrients and antioxidants.
No charring on the outside
Traditionally, Neapolitan style pizza is baked in a wood burning oven. The pizza is cooked quickly and produces a slightly charred crust. This is a very distinctive flavor.
A wood fired oven is a special type of oven that can reach extremely high temperatures. However, it is important to know how to prepare the oven before using it.
The oven is designed with a dome shape, allowing heat to radiate downward. This helps to cook the pizza evenly and prevent one side of the pizza from burning. However, the dome can get hot, and it is important to know how to avoid burning the pizza.
Truffle mushrooms on it
Using truffles in a fresh wood fired pizza is a great way to get a taste of the elusive delicacy. They are earthy and slightly sweet, and they pair well with other flavors, like parmesan cheese and garlic.
There are many different ways to make a truffle-infused pizza. You can either buy already made dough, or use a homemade recipe. You’ll want to make sure that the ingredients are fresh. Then, you’ll need to make sure that your dough is rolled out on parchment paper to ensure that it is not sticking.
You can also use a pre-made crust, but the homemade variety is easier to make. A 12-inch crust is the optimum size for a truffle and porcini pizza.
Don Antonio by Starita
Located in Buckhead, Don Antonio by Starita is a joint venture between pizza maker Antonio Starita and chef Roberto Caporuscio. The pizzas at Don Antonio are made using high-quality Italian products and homemade dough. The menu features more than 45 types of pizza, including pizzas with spicy toppings.
Don Antonio by Starita offers 60 wood-fired pies, including pizzas with imported smoked buffalo mozzarella. They are served with fresh basil and elemental tomato sauce. The pies can also be gluten-free. Don Antonio by Starita plans to open its lunch service in February. The restaurant is also open all week and offers a full bar.
Ricky’s
Located in the Woodstock Public Library District, Ricky’s Wood Fired serves a variety of pizzas, calzones and pastas, all served up with an Italian flair. The menu also includes specialty cocktails, local craft beers and Sonoma County wines. Their staff is friendly and attentive, making the experience enjoyable.
The name of Ricky’s wood fired pizza probably piqued your interest, but you may be wondering where it is located and what it is about. In short, Ricky’s is a family owned restaurant that serves Italian cuisine with a nod to the culinary masters of the Mediterranean. The restaurant also serves a variety of cocktails and is known for its specialty drinks, including the Hawaiian holiday in a glass.

Coppola wine tour napa movie#
It’s the middle of the harvest season, which means most winemakers in Napa Valley are hard at work perfecting their most prized possessions. It is definitely Hollywood at its best and a must visit if you are in the area. Now is a fantastic time to visit wine country, to experience the hustle and bustle going on around the vineyards during this critical time of year.
Coppola wine tour napa movie#
There will definitely be a lot of visitors who will want to visit this winery and view all the Hollywood memorabilia from the Coppola movie years. When it is said and done, I am sure that it will have a positive effect on all the nearby restaurants, lodging establishments, and other wineries. Indeed, the local government nixed his hotel idea but the public swimming pool complete with cabanas, Bocce courts, and an area for staging entertainment events forges ahead. Many community members in the area balked when they learned of all the different activities that Coppola had planned for the winery. The bottling line is fun but should not be the high point of the tour. For us, a walk in the barrel room and a short walk through a vineyard are a “must” for a good tour. We mostly heard stories about how Francis Ford Coppola decided on making certain wines and about the construction projects that are going on. It’s a decent tour but not enough about the wine-making process. We took a tour of the winery that lasts about 30 minutes followed by a wine tasting. “I want one,” he cried, and now he has it so all can view it at the Rustic restaurant. When Francis Ford Coppola was dining in Buenos Aires he discovered the sumptuous tastes that come from this wood-burning grill. The restaurant also has inside dining and features an amazing Argentine Grill called a parrilla. Just to sit and sip a glass of wine in this venue is so relaxing and soothing, it almost really does not matter how good the food tastes. The newly-opened Rustic restaurant in the Chateau has spectacular views of the Alexander Valley and the Mayacamus Mountain Range to the east. It is simply a beautiful and dramatic structure. The winery is a beautiful chateau and since its construction in 1973 has been a dramatic focal point for folks driving along Highway 101 north of Healdsburg. Yes, once it is done people will flock here as they did on the recent Labor Day weekend when at least 1000 visitors were served in the restaurant and in the tasting room. The famous director has left no stone unturned in his quest to make this winery into one of the most popular tourists attractions in this neck of the woods of Sonoma County. Since his purchase, this winery has gone through a couple of names but now he has settled on the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. These are really good wines but more intended for the average wine consumer. At this venue he makes and bottles thousands of cases of wine made from grapes sourced from throughout California. Near the town of Geyserville, about five miles north of Healdsburg, Francis Ford Coppola is nearing the completion of numerous renovations to the famous and former Chateau Souverain that he purchased in 2008. At his majestic and historic Rubicon Estate Winery in the Napa Valley he concentrates on making the finest wines possible from his estate vineyards in the Napa Valley. So big on wine that in fact he owns two wineries. Movie director Francis Ford Coppola of the famed Godfather movies is big on wine.

Vacation
Lisa was the queen of vacations. She loved to travel and she especially loved going to places in the sunshine. When we traveled to a sunny location for vacation we could pretty much predict what the schedule would look like. Every morning we would wake up and either go for a run or take a walk - usually to a Starbucks if there was one within 3 miles. Then we would go down by the pool for a few hours and soak in the sun with an occasional dip in the water. That would be followed by getting ready and going out into whatever town we happen to be in or nearby and finding a good place to eat. Then we would often walk around that town and take in the sights, maybe find a place to dance or have a drink. Occasionally this pattern would be broken up if there was something unique and fun to do during the day, as long as she could be in the sun or barter for more sun time on another day.
Last week the kids, their spouses, and I took our first vacation together without Lisa. Still our daily schedule was very similar - almost as though without saying anything to one another we didn’t want to betray her memory by straying from the way she loved to vacation. I woke up in the mornings and took a walk, we all got ready and spent time down by the pool taking an occasional dip in the water, and then at night we went into the nearby towns and found nice restaurants and walked around the town visiting the little shops. We went to a couple of beautiful wineries there in the wine country of Sonoma county, and we spent a day in San Francisco walking for miles for most of our time there. Lisa would’ve loved this vacation. It was a really good time together and it was good for our souls. We talked about Lisa a lot. But it was so hard and different without her. The dynamics are not the same and of course we all feel that. Still, it was good.
As we all left on that last day, the kids and their spouses all went their separate ways, and I got in my car to drive home. The reality of yet another previously shared experience that would never be shared again hit me. It is these best events and experiences that are also the hardest. But these experiences are still good and important and healing. Sharing these joys and memories and tears and laughter add new pages to an otherwise unwritten next chapter, even though we still feel the stinging loss of the missing central character in our story. She would have loved this vacation, and we honored her memory in our sun-soaked week together.
