The Art of Commissioning Art
When you discover an artist whose work resonates with your taste and style, yet you have a specific subject matter in mind that you aren’t finding in his or her collection or that works in your desired space, you may decide to commission the artist to create an original piece just for you. Commissioned works have extreme personal value, yet require a great deal of planning and synergy between you and the artist before one stroke is applied to the canvas. Yet on the flip side, you walk away with an original masterpiece that is exclusive and specific to you, your space or to the person you are giving it to.

Karen Rolfes, Cincinnati artist
Karen Rolfes, an impressionistic oil painter in Cincinnati, has been creating lush, colorful lake scenes, florals and trees since she began painting as a way to take her mind off her discomfort following back surgery 17 years ago. Since then she has not only sold scores of paintings to clients all over the world, but has two gallery locations, one in Harbor Springs, MI and the other in Cincinnati, OH.

“Typically someone who loves my art may see something they like but maybe the colors and size aren’t quite right so they order a commission piece,” Karen said.
Tumblr media
The memory and the commissioned painting
Karen is often asked to recreate a scene from a special moment on vacation or a meaningful memory.
“I genuinely enjoy the process and love working together with a client to bring their vision to the canvas,” Karen says.
Tumblr media
The memory and the commissioned painting
She offers a few things to consider when requesting a commission piece.
What specific scene are you looking to create or re-create? Do you have a photo?
What color scheme would you like for the painting?
Who is this piece for? You or another person?
What is the purpose of this piece? For decorative purposes, sentimental or both?
Where is the artwork going to go? Do you have photos of the space where it will be hung?
What is the specific size of painting you are looking for?
What kind of frame will you be requesting or using?
When do you need the piece completed? What timeline can we agree upon?
Tumblr media
A commissioned piece by Karen Rolfes
If possible, Karen will go over to the home to get a feel of the space to ensure that she creates artwork that will properly align with the style of the room where it will be hung. Once she is near completion of the work, she will ask the client to come to the studio if possible to make any adjustments needed.

The key is keeping an open line of communication between the artist and client from the first meeting and throughout the entire process. As much as the artist is responsible for depicting the vision of the client, the client is responsible for making their vision as clear as possible for the artist so that in the end both are happy with the results.

Don’t Let Quarantine Cancel the Fun of Easter!
Hop to it! School and activities may be cancelled, but no one can take away the fun surrounding a holiday like Easter. Knowing we will all be social distancing and celebrating Easter with our immediate families, we compiled this list of activities you can do with your family at home, or some you can do virtually with friends afar.
Tumblr media
1. Paint Rocks or Wooden Easter Eggs || Find some rocks around the neighborhood, or order some wooden eggs (hard to find locally right now) and pull out your favorite art medium, such as watercolors, markers, oil pastels... or glitter. With real eggs in high demand, this is the perfect eco-conscious activity for families with little ones, and we’ve found some great inspiration here. Plus, next year when you pull then out you’ll have a colorful memory of Easter 2020 (although, maybe you’ll want to forget).
Tumblr media
2. Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt || Flip it in reverse this year. Give your kids a few plastic eggs and send them off to fill them with whatever they can find in Mother Nature.
3. Easter Dice Game on Zoom | Schedule time with family anywhere in the world and play a round (or two) of a fun dice game. Have a die for each player, one Golden Egg (with the best candy, or even $ in it!), and a filled egg for every other player. We love THESE PRINTABLE CARDS. Have one person roll at a time, and see who gets the golden egg!
Tumblr media
4. Jelly Bean Sort || Give each player the same number of jelly beans in an assortment of colors, with one cup or bowl for each color. The first person to sort their jelly beans correctly wins! (this could also be done on Zoom!)
Tumblr media
5. Basket Ribbon Hunt || Have little ones at home that are expecting the Easter bunny? Tie a ribbon or string on their bedpost and make them chase it through the house to where their basket is hiding. Bonus points if you multiple kids and their ribbons cross paths!
6. DIY Easter Bunny Bag Toss || Convert one of the (hundreds of) boxes you’ve received at your doorstep these last few weeks into a bag toss! Use this inspiration to draw and cut some holes, and use a thick market to do all of the drawings. You can also simplify the bags by using (small) socks and raw beans inside.
Tumblr media
We aren’t going to let COVID-19 ruin one of our favorite holidays, and hopefully these activities and fun ensure you all have fun too! Please share with your friends and tag us in your fun to be featured! Happy Easter!
