SaiyanPrincessSwanie - Reading List Week 31
Tumblr media
Hey all, it’s time to bring you week 31of my reading list. These are all one-shots, drabbles and stories from authors who have either tagged me in their work or they have been recommended to me. Every week, I will put a list together of what I’m reading. I want to do this to help spread the love in the Marvel Community.
If you would like to be added, signal boosted, please tag me in your fics or tag me in someone else’s stories. If you don’t see your story listed it’s probably due to my cut off date I had earlier in the week or Tumblr might have eaten your tagged story. All stories not listed that I did receive will be featured on the following week. Completed series that I’m tagged in will take longer for me to get through but please still tag me.
This week was crazy as I fell behind in my reading due to the sudden loss of a family member. I had 50 fics this week and had to push off another 20 until next week. Please be kind and patient as I continue to make my way through all tags. The list is almost filled so make sure you tag me for this week.
Make sure you read the warnings on every story. They range from dark to fluff.
These will be listed in no particular order. None of these stories are mine. I’m just signal boosting them. Author is listed next to title.
Page break made by @whimsicalrogers
If you can please reblog these lists so they can reach more people on Tumblr.

Chapter 2: From Scrubs to Sauvignon
Sunlight streaming through the shutters wakes me before the alarm. After the previous seventy two hours with too much alcohol, not enough sleep and shared hotel rooms, last night’s sleep was a solid nine and a half hours and I feel so much better for it.
Trying, for a moment at least, to ignore both the demands of my bladder and my desperate need for caffeine, I gaze up at the ceiling and contemplate the surgery ahead of me. Whilst it’s a comparatively routine procedure for me, I always think about the families — parents, grandparents, siblings. It’s an anxious time for them, never routine, a step into the unknown and they are putting their trust in me to look after their precious child. Their faith in me is something I take very seriously.
I have a ritual I follow every time before theatre. I take a few minutes to close my eyes and let the procedure play inside my head, my hands echoing the images in my brain. I trace the path my scalpel will take on the skin; I position, in mid air, the locations of the clamps; I work with my imaginary mallet and chisel honing the bone, the X-ray images clear in my head.
By the time I’ve finished closing the incision, the demands of my bladder can no longer be ignored. That’s my cue to get out of bed and start my day.
***********
Before I put my scrubs on, I pay a visit to the side room where Robbie, my seven year old patient has spent the night. His parents have already given consent for the operation, but I like to go and do a final check.
Robbie is sitting up in bed, a bit subdued but in good health. His mother is sitting expectantly, nervously playing with the skin around her nails. The foldaway bed has already been put away, but, judging by her red rimmed eyes, I don’t think it got much use. Robbie’s father follows me into the room, two coffees in his hands.
“Sorry, Doctor Claire,” he nods at the coffee. “I didna get ye one. D’ye want one?”
I let the doctor reference pass. As a surgeon, my title is no longer doctor. Officially, I am Miss Beauchamp, but prefer my juvenile patients to call me Claire. Quite a lot of the parents seem to call me Doctor Claire. I suppose they like the reassurance that I am actually a proper doctor.
“No, thanks.” I smile. “Are we all set then?”
They nod nervously.
“Aye,” Robbie’s father agrees. “We need tae get it done.”
“How long will it take?” Robbie’s mother looks directly at me, wanting a definitive answer.
I hesitate. I don’t like to give precise times. If the surgery goes longer then parents start to fear the worst, and that’s not always the case. So I give a vague answer. “‘Till lunchtime… you could always go and sit outside in the little garden, it’s a lovely day.”
His mother looks down at her hands and shakes her head. “No, I want tae be right here …”
She doesn’t finish her sentence, but she doesn’t have to. I know exactly what she’s thinking.
I turn to Robbie, blissfully unaware of his parents’ thoughts. He beckons me to him.
“When I wakes up,” he begins in a stage whisper. “Can I have a treat?”
“What sort of treat did you have in mind?”
“Can I have a MacDonald’s? But no’ a kid’s meal. I’ve never had a Big Mac.”
I glance at his parents who nod at me before I whisper back, “Of course you can, but don’t let nurse Geillis see, will you? She can be ever so naughty. She’ll be trying to steal your chips away, if you’re not careful.”
And with that, I stroke Robbie’s little cheek before saying my goodbyes and head out to get changed.
**********
Robbie’s surgery went to plan, no nasty surprises or tricky complications. I call in to check on Robbie’s parents before they head to recovery. They look totally different to when I saw them this morning. Still worn out of course, I don’t think they’ll sleep properly until their little lad is home with them, but their faces shine with sheer relief. I have warned them about the long road ahead, with many hours of physiotherapy and exercises, but, for today, I’ll let them have their moment of pure happiness. Reality will hit them again soon enough.
As I leave the waiting room, making my farewells, Robbie’s dad thanks me once more. I can tell he’s unsure whether hugging me is appropriate or not, so he settles for a handshake. His wife has no such qualms, wrapping me tightly in a hug, whispering her thanks until her husband reminds her that they need to be with their son. I point the way and head down to the nurses station.
Geillis is sitting there, looking very busy on the computer. I pull up a chair and sit next to her. The screen is filled with images of our weekend in Barcelona.
“What?” She looks at me as if I’ve accused her of something. “I’m on ma lunch, aren’t I?”
“How was your night then?”
Geillis beams from ear to ear— she’s like the cat who got the cream. “Nay bad, nay bad at all. After two nights away, Dougal realises what he’s got wi’ me, and he dinna hesitate tae show me, if ye ken what I mean?”
She winks at a poor medical student, who blushes and busies himself with a set of medical notes.
“Geillis,” I warn. “Behave yourself.”
“Anyway, pet, how was yer evening? Another tryst wi’ Professor Randall?” Her face says it all. Geillis thinks about as much of Frank as he does of her. Literally the only thing they have in common is me, and it’s getting pretty wearing.
“No, I was worn out and— oh, that reminds me.” I fumble in my pocket for my phone as I carry on talking. “I’ve got someone else’s suitcase. I hope they’ve got mine.”
I glance at the screen. Two missed calls and one message. All from the same number. All from the number I called last night, the James-Fraser-isn’t-here-don’t-call-again-ever number. Looks like this James Fraser has a jealous or suspicious wife-partner-girlfriend-housekeeper.
“Catch up later, Geillis, I need to deal with this.”
I rush back to my office to try and sort the suitcase problem out.
The message is brief and to the point.
Hi, Jamie Fraser here. I think I have your case too. Can we arrange a swap? I live in Glasgow. Hopefully you too. Where and when? I’m free after 5 today.
After five will work for me too, I just need to pop home and pick up his case. Now, based on his wardrobe choices and his one message to me, he doesn’t actually seem like an axe murderer or sex pervert, but you can’t really tell, so I think about a public location.
How about the benches by the cafe at Kelvingrove Park? 5:30? Claire Beauchamp
A couple of minutes later his reply appears on my screen.
Fine. See you then.  I’ll be the one wheeling a black Samsonite. JF
**************
It’s another glorious sunny day here in Glasgow. Just ideal for going for a stroll in the park. I do feel a bit conspicuous with a suitcase trailing along behind me — kind of like an upmarket bag lady.
There are no other suitcases around, so I perch on a bench. I fire a quick message to Geillis, just so that she knows where to direct the police if I disappear and then wait. It’s not too bad waiting. The sun is still warm, so I stretch my legs out trying for a tan. With my eyes closed, I lift my face up to soak up the rays. I may get panda eyes with my sunglasses on, but I don’t really care. The warmth is so good and I can feel myself relaxing totally —
“Ahem.”
I am conscious of a shadow across my face. I open my eyes and quickly stand up.
He’s tall. That’s the first thing I notice. A good few inches taller than me, and I’m 5 feet 9. And broad. Broad enough to block my sun. His hair is red, very red and the sun behind him creates a fiery corona around his head.
He’s a Viking. A Viking in a navy blue suit and a crisp white shirt. How many of those white shirts does he own, I wonder?
“Claire Beauchamp, I presume. I recognise the case. That red ribbon on the handle, such a unique idea.”
He smiles, a lopsided half grin and holds out his hand for me to shake. “Jamie Fraser.”
“Claire Beauchamp,” I say somewhat unnecessarily as we shake hands.
He sits down. “So,” he begins politely. “I hope ye havena come far out of yer way.”
I join him on the bench.
“No,” I gesture vaguely to my right. “I live not too far from here. How about you?”
That lopsided grin appears again. “Nah,” he gestures to his left. “No’ too far at all.”
There’s an awkward moment of silence. We are not really here for small talk, but is it too rude to just dive in and do the swap?
“So,” Jamie breaks the silence. “About the cases…”
Apparently it’s not too rude.
“I ken ye have ma case there, on account of ma contact details being in it, but what about this one? How do I ken this is yers? Black Samsonites with wee red ribbons seem to be awfa common ‘round here. As proof, can ye mebbe tell me something that’s in it? Something identifiable?”
And at this, my mind goes blank, what did I pack?
“Er, denim shorts… black flip flops… white vest—”
“Weel, they’re all verra common. Is there anything a wee bit more… unique?”
Is it my imagination or is there a twinkle in his clear blue eyes as he says this? And then I remember exactly what’s in my case and start to blush.
“There may be some hen party bits and pieces in there too. It was my friend’s hen weekend, so I think there may be some, er, stuff from that, you know, er, handcuffs… shot glasses…”
He puts me out of my misery. “Och, that’s fine. It’s yers, right enough. Here ye go.”
And we do the exchange, just like in the spy movies. Except in those, the cases are filled with bank notes and the top secret blueprints for a submarine base, and not white dress shirts and an assortment of shot glasses shaped like penises.
Our phones beep practically simultaneously. I pull mine out of my pocket. Jamie does the same and glances at his phone.
Mine is a text from Frank confirming tonight’s arrangements “I’d better go. Plans for tonight, you know.”
“Snap. Plans here as well.”
“Goodbye then. I’m not sure whose fault it was, the mixup at the airport. So why don’t we both say sorry, or neither of us?” I suggest as I stand up and smooth the creases from my skirt.
“Sounds good tae me. How about neither?” He smiles again. “Ms Claire Beauchamp, nice to meet you.”
“Mr Jamie Fraser, likewise I’m sure.”
And with that we head off, me to the right and Jamie Fraser to the left.
************
Frank had said 7:30, and, sure enough, at 7:28 my intercom buzzes and I let Frank in. He arrives at my door carrying a large bunch of lilies and roses. No, not a bunch, I can’t describe it as a bunch… carrying a large bouquet of lilies and roses, beautifully arranged and hand-tied. Clearly not a supermarket purchase. Nor is the wine he also hands to me. A chilled bottle of my favourite Sauvignon Blanc, only available from quality wine merchants in the city.
Frank can be incredibly thoughtful and generous, and I am suitably grateful. I pop the flowers into the kitchen sink while I try to locate a vase big enough to hold them.  He walks in as I’m scrabbling around on my hands and knees, bum in the air, head buried in the cupboard under the sink.
“So what are we having for dinner?” He asks as he pours the wine. “Are you cooking?”
I emerge victorious, having found the vase wedged between a bottle of sink unblocker and an unused can of spray starch.
“Sorry?”
“Dinner?” He repeats, helping me to my feet.
“I’ve not had a chance to cook. I told you about the suitcase confusion, didn’t I?  Well, I had to get that sorted. I thought we could have something delivered. That’s ok, isn’t it?”
“I’m sure that will be fine, darling. What would you like?”
What would I like? What I would really like would be a huge, great pizza full of carbs and grease and pepperoni and cheese that pulls into strands when you try to take a slice. And to sit on the floor with the pizza box between us watching Netflix and drinking beer.
But, that is clearly a rhetorical question.
“Thai?” Frank doesn’t wait for my answer.
Thai is the only acceptable takeaway in Frank’s eyes, eaten at a table, on proper plates. I nod my agreement. After all, he’s brought me wonderful flowers, and a gorgeous bottle of wine. He deserves to have the choice. And I can have pizza with my friends any time.
“You ring the order through then, while I arrange these beautiful flowers.” I say and kiss his cheek.
And that is our evening sorted - takeaway, a couple of glasses of wine, Newsnight on the television and then to bed for a bit of sex.
So, that’s food, drink, mind and body all sorted. I should go to sleep feeling satisfied with everything. I should… shouldn’t I?

“Mango!” Lauren was on her front porch when I pulled into her driveway. She had invited me over on a sunny Saturday afternoon for lunch with her and her husband, Ian. I adored my younger sister dearly and always had a wonderful time when we visited. Saturday lunches were especially a very special time where we could catch up over a delicious home cooked meal.
“Lauren!” I got out of Carly and climbed up the porch steps. As I hadn’t seen her in a while, the biggest hug I could muster was in order. She was all smiles and seemed to be in an exceptionally good mood.
“I know I said we were going to have barbeque today, but things just did not pan out. So I hope that grilled turkey burgers, potato salad, green beans, and pecan tarts are okay.”
I laughed. “That sounds amazing, but do you know that there are only three of us for lunch?”
“Yes - I can count, but leftovers are the best part of any meal.”
I rolled my eyes and followed my sister into her house. She had a lovely home. It was cozy and well put together. It almost looked like something out of Better Homes and Gardens magazine. The best part though was that it was out in the country. The property was secluded. Her only neighbors were towering oak trees, diverse wildlife, and a small creek two minutes away. Whenever we would go into her backyard, I would find myself getting lost in the splendor of the outdoors.
“Ian went out to pick up beer and some lemonade. He should be back soon. In the meantime, let’s catch up in the kitchen. I still have a little cooking to do.”
As we entered the kitchen, I settled onto a wooden stool with a blue gingham seat cushion. I asked Lauren how things were going. She replied with her usual cheeriness. Her new promotion at her financial firm was going well and Ian was enjoying the good weather by fishing every week. They were just starting on long-awaited home renovations.
“Actually, we officially started the process this morning! I called your friend Frankie and had him over this morning to do some minor work on the backyard deck. He did a really good job. I’m really excited that we’ll be able to have meals and get togethers out there again.” She sighed contently.
“He’s not still here, is he?” I wasn’t exactly dressed for company outside of my sister and brother-in-law. Somehow bright red cotton red cheer shorts and a well worn white t-shirt reading “FLASH” in bold scarlet letters did not strike me as an outfit that conveyed a well put together adult. It had more of a 70’s teenager vibe to it.
“He left about forty-five minutes before you arrived. Why?”
“Just curious.”
“Sure you are… I see that smile on your face. You like him. I should have known.”
“Laur -”
“I’m not judging you, Mango. He’s a cutie and your type. I know about your weakness for brown eyes. Have you asked him out yet?”
I shook my head no. “We’re just friends. Or at least I think we are. I’m not too sure. Sometimes I feel like he’s just being polite and -”
“Jesus Christ. Do you speak to each other frequently?”
“Yeah, we text almost every day.”
“Do you two have a good time when you speak to each other?”
“I think so. I mean, I know that I do.”
“Congratulations. You are friends.” Lauren exhaled and I braced myself. I knew what was coming next. My sister began her time old lecture on the importance of letting down my guard. She reiterated that I needed to be open to letting others love and care for me. That by showing my vulnerability that I may have risked getting hurt, but I also risked missing out on so much more. I knew she was right deep down, I just wasn’t ready to get to that level yet.
“This is the last thing I will say and then I promise that I’ll drop it. You are my big sister and I love you. Your last relationship was six years ago. I want you to be happy. You deserve someone who can do that. I don’t know Frankie, but I think you’d be stupid to not ask him out for coffee at the very least. He could be total garbage or the one that completes you. Either way, you won’t know until you ask.”
***
It was dusk when I left Lauren’s. I kept thinking about our conversation in the kitchen about Frankie. I did like him a lot and I would have been interested in pursuing a relationship with him. Maybe I did need to just suck it up and ask him out. A small pebble of courage was forming in my stomach. I opened up my contacts in my phone and tapped Frankie’s name. The line began to ring. I was going to do this. I was going to be confident, see this through, and ask him to go for coffee. If he said “no”, it would be okay. The world would not end.
“Hi Maggie.” Immediately I felt myself melting. Everytime I heard him say my name in his husky baritone, I turned into putty. He had a way of making two simple syllables sound like the sweetest honey dripping off of his lips.
“Hey Frankie. Am I calling at a bad time? My confidence was disappearing as fast as it had appeared.
“Never. I was just getting settled to watch tv and eat dinner.”
“Oh no. I didn’t mean to interrupt your dinner. I can call back later. It’s not important.”
“It’s okay. It’s just me, a Cheers rerun, and a Hot Pocket. You aren’t interrupting anything. How are you doing? How was your visit with your sister?”
I stopped. “How did you know about my visit?”
“She told me about it this morning when I was working on the deck in the backyard.”
“Right. She didn’t drive you crazy, did she?”
“Nope. She was really nice and left me alone to work for the most part. She did offer me coffee a few times.”
Coffee! What a perfect segue. I took a deep breath and prepared myself. It was then or never.
“Speaking of coffee, one of our board members, Harvey, mentioned that one of the legs on his coffee table needs repair. Would it be okay if I passed your info along to him?” Goddamnit. My nerves decided it would be never.
“Of course. I would be more than happy to look at it.”
“Awesome. I’ll let him know,” I said weakly.
“Is there anything else you needed?”
“I’m good,” I lied. “I’ll let you get back to Cheers and your Hot Pocket. Just promise that you’ll eat a vegetable or piece of fruit as well. That shit isn’t a real dinner.”
“Yes, Mom.” I could hear a grin in his voice which in turn made me smile. “I promise to eat something with actual nutrients as well.” We shared a chuckle.
“Maggie? Are you still on the road?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Will you promise to text me when you get home? Just so I know that you got in okay?”
“Yes, Dad.”
***
Over the next month and a half, I must have given Frankie over fifteen referrals alone. That didn’t include the ones that both Lauren and Harvey sent his way. Although he was busy with this influx of work, we still were good about keeping up with each other on a daily basis. Sometimes it was a simple text reminding the other person to hydrate. Other times it was a late night phone call where we shared laughter over the eccentricities of board members he had met that day.
I was plugging away in my office on a Monday afternoon. I was pouring over numbers for the next season’s budget and was desperate for a distraction. My head was practically swimming. My phone started to play “Go All the Way” and I knew that Frankie was calling me. I picked that ringtone specifically for him. I answered my phone.
“Hi Frank-”
“I’m in the area. Could I maybe drop by the theater for a second? I have iced coffee.”
“Absolutely! I do love my iced coffee and I always enjoy seeing you. That would be nice.”
“I can be there in fifteen minutes.”
“See you then!” I hung up. The butterflies in my stomach had reappeared. When I spoke with or texted him, I’d get a little giddy. There was just something about seeing him in person that made me feel excitedly dizzy - like I was drunk. I wondered if he would look any different from the last time I saw him. Would he still have his patchy beard and adorable belly pooch? What about his soft brown curls kept in check by his baseball cap?
I heard a knock on my office door frame and looked up. I was happy to see that Frankie still looked the same, only a little more tan. His beard, pooch, curls, and hat were all present. A large smile crossed his face when he walked in and handed me my iced coffee.
“Hi stranger. Long time, no see.”
“Tell me about it! You’re so busy now. I’m surprised you still have time to talk with me, let alone bring me iced coffee.”
“I will always make time for you. I can’t stay for too long, but I did want to bring you a pick me up. You mentioned that today was budget day and I thought the coffee would help.”
“It does. Thank you so much.”
“I also wanted to thank you. You’ve been so kind and have really helped me out with all of these jobs. Really - I wouldn’t have been able to pay rent or buy groceries without your help. I just finished a huge job building a curio cabinet for your board member Stacey. It paid really well and to thank you I was thinking that maybe I could take you out to dinner on Thursday. Only if you are comfortable with it. I don’t want to put any pressure on you.”
I had lost all of my capability for language. This beautiful, reserved, and sweet man was asking if he could take me out to dinner. I somehow was able to squeak out that I would love to. He shyly looked down at the floor and blepped his tongue.
“Great. I’ve heard great things about Arianna’s on Main Street. Would 7:00 PM work for you?”
“Absolutely. It’s a date.”

Ithaca, New York
Dean’s drunk again.
Granted, it’s not really an issue because he knows he can stop if he wants to, knows it’s just a way for him to numb the pain, to not feel anything, but his brother still worries about him, still rolls his eyes when he sees another empty bottle of Jack Daniels littering the floor or when he listens to his slurred words over the phone.
He doesn’t care.
In fact, he barely cares about anything anymore, barely bothers to return Charlie’s phone calls or explain why exactly he broke things off with Cassie –he’d known it was over the moment he heard Y/N was getting married– barely tries to do anything but get up and go to work every day, to find a way out of all this pain.
He just wants to forget.
He wants to forget that the girl he’s been in love with for years is marrying someone else.
He wants to forget that he ruined all of his chances with her, that it could have been him, if only he’d been brave enough.
He wants to forget how alive she made him feel, how much losing her had cost him.
He wants to forget her.
But he can’t.
God help him, he can’t.
He reaches for his phone, flips through the pictures until he finds the only photo of her he hasn’t deleted yet, the one he’d taken the night they first met. The picture’s dark, but, somehow, he’s managed to capture the lines of her face, the brightness in her eyes, the warmth of her kiss-swollen lips as she laughs at something he’s said.
He knows what those lips taste like.
He knows what they feel like moving against his, remembers all the sounds she’d made when he’d nibbled that spot on her neck just right, how soft and perfect she looked in his jacket.
He knows how she looks after she’s been kissed; sunny, carefree, alive.
He wonders, briefly, whether she smiles at Frank the same way she’d smiled at him that night.
Not that it really matters.
Dean stopped making her smile a long time ago. The thought breaks something in him.
His thumb hovers over her number.
He still knows it by heart, even though he hasn’t called her in years. Right now, though, with fluid confidence running through his veins, he needs to talk to her, even if he’s just being selfish, even if he doesn’t deserve to hear the sound of her voice.
The number is dialed quickly, before he can stop himself, and then he waits, waits for her to pick up, waits until it goes straight to voicemail.
Her bright laugh fills the other end of the line then, and he remembers; they’d recorded it together, in the living room of her tiny apartment in Ithaca, snuggled up next to each other on the bed. It’d taken her more than five times to get it right because he’d kept tickling her, kept brushing his fingers against her sides until she broke into uncontrollable fits of laughter.
Deep breath.
Eyes hot with unshed tears.
“Kid,” he sighs, runs a finger through his hair. “S’ me. Haven’t called you in a while, have I? Well, I got… I got no excuse for that. I just screwed up. I really screwed up. But I…” He closes his eyes, leans against the wall. “I miss you, kid. I miss you so much that it fucking hurts. And I know–” he swallows, hard– “I know I have no right to call you so out of the sudden, not after everything I put you through but, I…” He sucks air through his nose. “You can’t marry this guy, Y/N. He doesn’t deserve you. No one ever does, but... I love you. I am in love with you. Jesus, kid, I’m so in love with you that it terrifies me, but if there’s a chance you… If you feel the same way, I swear to God, I’ll do anything I can to make this work, kid. Anything. I know, I know…” He laughs, but it’s so broken he almost feels sorry for himself. “S’ pretty crappy of me to just throw this bombshell over the phone, but I’m just… I’m done playing games. I can’t lose you. Not again. So, just–” his breath hitches– “call me. Please.”
She never calls back.

off the rack #1305
Monday, March 16, 2020
It's official. We have cancelled our tropical vacation plans. We were supposed to fly to Cuba in April for a week but now that Canada has called for the return of any Canadians abroad as soon as possible, we feared that if we went we wouldn't be able to return as scheduled. I'm good with our decision being the reluctant traveller anyways. "Self isolation" and "flattening the curve" are two new terms that have entered the collective consciousness and I wonder how many average citizens understand what these terms mean. A good education has never been more important than during this time of crisis. Learn what's real and protect yourself and your loved ones.
Catwoman #21 - Joelle Jones (writer) Fernando Blanco (art) FCO Plascencia (colours) Saida Temofonte (letters). Thank Thor that's over with. Selina saves the day after fighting off a zombie horde. The wicked Raina Creel gets what's coming and Catwoman hits the road outta town. I love this character but I didn't like her stay in Villa Hermosa and the art these last few issues wasn't nice to look at. The art in the next issue will decide whether I keep reading this book or not.
Avengers of the Wastelands #3 - Ed Brisson (writer) Jonas Scharf (art) Neeraj Menon (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). The team is joined by new member Viv Vision as their search for Doctor Doom continues. Their trip across the Wastelands will have an unexpected detour when more super villains get in their way. I like how Ed is using the Wastelands version of Marvel's heroes and villains.
The Dollhouse Family #5 - M. R. Carey (writer) Peter Gross (layouts) Vince Locke (finishes) Cris Peter (colours) Todd Klein (letters). We find out how the dollhouse was made and it's gross. I hope Alice's inheritance isn't the death of her.
Punisher Soviet #5 - Garth Ennis (writer) Jacen Burrows (pencils) Guillermo Ortego (inks) Nolan Woodard (colours) Rob Steen (letters). Ah man, Frank's buddy won't make it to next issue's bullet filled conclusion. I liked Valery.
Young Justice #14 - Brian Michael Bendis & David F. Walker (writers) John Timms & Michael Avon Oeming (art) Gabe Eltaeb (colours) Wes Abbott (letters). Impulse tracks down Sideways, Spoiler, Aqualad and Arrowette to help the team find Conner and give the evil S.T.A.R. Labs scientist what for. Mission accomplished. But wait! There's more. I can't wait to hear what Dr. Glory has to say for herself. I'm not a fan of Michael Avon Oeming's art but I have to say that it's marginally more palatable in colour.
The Immortal Hulk #32 - Al Ewing (writer) Joe Bennett (pencils main story) Ruy Jose & Belardino Brabo (inks main story) Paul Mounts (colours main story) Javier Rodriguez (pencils & colours Xemnu sequence) Alvaro Lopez (inks Xemnu sequence) VC's Cory Petit (letters). This new version of Xemnu is even freakier than the original. Xemnu has managed to totally change the world's perceptions with the promise from Dario Agger that he will rule the planet once Dario is done with it. Bruce's brain might have been affected, but his alter egos are still their good old green selves. I can't get enough of this Hulk.
The Batman's Grave #6 - Warren Ellis (writer) Bryan Hitch (art) Alex Sinclair (colours) Richard Starkings (letters). Okay, I'm done with this 12-issue maxi. Just over half of this is Batman and Commissioner Gordon running a gauntlet of criminals to get out of Arkham Asylum. The rest is Batman spouting a running monologue at a crime scene where someone has been murdered. This issue just annoyed me so I'm burying the rest.
Avengers #32 - Jason Aaron (writer) Ed McGuinness (pencils) Francesco Manna (inks) Jason Keith (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). This issue features Earth's Mightiest Villains and has to be this week's Earth's mightiest scripted comic book. Boy, there is a lot of dialogue. The forces amassing against the Avengers are overwhelming. There's no way the good guys are going to win against these evil allies. You've got bad Namor of Atlantis, Dracula and his vampire army, the Red Widow and her Russian Winter Guard and the turn coat Agent Coulson and his Squadron Supreme of America. Wait until you see the bad guys' ace in the hole. This war on the Avengers is going to be epic.
Hawkeye: Freefall #4 - Matthew Rosenberg (writer) Otto Schmidt (art) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). I love this convoluted plan to take down the Hood that Clint has concocted. Him hitting the villain's criminal empire as Ronin while joining his super hero buddies in trying to catch Ronin is hilarious. I love all the guest stars. I can't wait to see how everyone reacts when they find out Clint's scheme.
Jessica Jones: Blind Spot #5 - Kelly Thompson (writer) Mattia De Iulis (art) VC's Cory Petit (letters). A trap is set for the bad guy and Jessica closes a cold case. I thought that this would be the last issue but I see that #6 will hit the racks March 25. Is it an epilogue or a new case?
The Amazing Spider-Man #41 - Nick Spencer (writer) Ryan Ottley (pencils) Cliff Rathburn (inks) Nathan Fairbairn (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). "True Companions" part 1. Spidey teams up with Boomerang to track down pieces of a powerful mystical tablet to keep it out of the hands of Wilson Fisk. Meanwhile, the Lethal Legion reforms. I don't find this new story intellectually stimulating but I'm a die hard Spider-Man fan so I'll keep reading.
X-Men #8 - Jonathan Hickman (writer) Mahmud Asrar (art) Sunny Gho (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). The X-Men are fighting battles on multiple fronts and a new one breeds this issue as the Brood land on Krakoa. They're on an egg hunt just in time for Easter. This could have been an issue of New Mutants since Rahne, Dani and Magik play a big part in this story. I'm starting to get overwhelmed by all the plots in these new X-books and am thinking of dropping more titles.
Decorum #1 - Jonathan Hickman (writer) Mike Huddleston (art) Rus Wooton (letters). Meet Imogen Smith-Morley. She's an assassin who insists on good manners. I like her. What I didn't like was all the rigmarole leading up to her contracted hit. Did we really need all the information about this science fiction universe? I don't think it added anything to the main story. If I read more issues it's because I think Imogen is cool.
Cable #1 - Gerry Duggan (writer) Phil Noto (art) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). Most of this debut features young Nathan Dayspring Askani'son Summers AKA Cable. For some reason there's a 3-page scene in the back with old man Cable. This issue was nothing to write home about but the art is nice and the kid's got potential. If you're looking to add another X-book to your pile, this one would be okay.
Superman #21 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Ivan Reis (pencils) Joe Prado & Oclair Albert (inks) Alex Sinclair (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters). Oh Mongul, you're such a jerk. Mucho macho punching between Mongul and Superman with the fate of the embryonic United Planets at stake and then Mongul laughs it all off and leaves. Meanwhile, Lois has to deal with fallout from the big secret ID reveal. Things are interesting again in this book.
Thor #4 - Donny Cates (writer) Nic Klein (art) Matthew Wilson (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). The Black Winter is coming and Galactus is ready to face it with help from King Thor. I really liked the epilogue to Thor's fight with Beta Ray Bill that starts off this issue. The Lady Sif is now the guardian of the Rainbow Bridge and the changes in her character are awesome.

off the rack #1291
Monday, December 9, 2019
Thank Thor for Santa's little helper. We're about as ready for Christmas as I'll ever be. Penny is leaving soon for her annual drive up north to visit family and friends while I make sure all the lights I strung don't burn down the house. I finally got around to watching the animated feature "Big Hero 6" last night and was delighted by it.
Superman Up In The Sky #6 - Tom King (writer) Andy Kubert (pencils) Sandra Hope (inks) Brad Anderson (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). Oh man, this story has the most inept villain ever. We find out why Alice was kidnapped by an alien. I liked the trip back to Earth. Kids say the darnedest things.
Daredevil #14 - Chip Zdarsky (writer) Marco Checchetto & Francesco Mobili (art) Nolan Woodard (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). Detective Cole North is conflicted after talking about the law over coffee with Matt. Meanwhile the Police Commissioner has ordered his cops not to go into Hell's Kitchen, leading to rampant crime. It's time for the return of Daredevil and Elektra is going to be tagging along. This is going to be good.
Young Justice #11 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) John Timms (art) Gabe Eltaeb (colours) Wes Abbott (letters). The team is back in their home dimension and they meet Naomi for the first time. Great time for a sleepover eh. Things go south when Superboy gets punked by the S.T.A.R. Labs lady. I can't wait to see what Brian Bendis does with Mike Grell's Warlord.
Archie #709 - Nick Spencer & Mariko Tamaki (writers) Sandy Jarrell (artist) Matt Herms (colours) Jack Morelli (letters). The 5-part story of Archie's romance with Sabrina comes to an end. I am happy with the outcome.
Savage Avengers #8 - Gerry Duggan (writer) Patch Zircher (art) Java Tartaglia (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). I love the clash of egos in this issue. Conan dines with Doom and Stephen crashes dinner. The three then go off looking for Kulan Gath. Hey, how else is the bad guy supposed to get his all powerful amulet back? I'm guessing it's another Doombot that runs afoul of the ancient wizard because heaven forbid they kill Doctor Doom again. Don't forget Doom died outside the UN in NYC and got shot dead by Taskmaster.
Ironheart #12 - Eve L. Ewing (writer) Luciano Vecchio (art) Geoffo (layouts) Matt Milla (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). The good guys beat the bad guys and Wakanda is saved. The End. I've followed Riri Williams since she was first created by Brian Michael Bendis and I am sad that she will no longer have her own book on the racks. The crew that put out these twelve issues did Brian proud.
Web of the Black Widow #4 - Jody Houser (writer) Stephen Mooney (art) Triona Farrell (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). It's a wounded Widow that opens this issue and we find out how that happens. Clint/Hawkeye the hothead acts before he has all the facts and Natasha pays the price. She winds up dead to rights and possibly dead period. I know she'll save herself and I want to see how she does it.
Batman #84 - Tom King (writer) Jorge Fornes (art) Jordie Bellaire (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). There are a mind boggling number of flashbacks this issue trying to explain what the ding dong heck is going on. It all leads to the confrontation of father and son with Thomas and Bruce Wayne fighting for the fate of Batman. I don't think everything is going to change after Tom King leaves this book but man, is he ever stirring the pot.
The Amazing Spider-Man #35 - Nick Spencer (writer) Oscar Bazaldua (art) Steve Firchow (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). This is the story where Doctor Doom was assassinated in front of the UN. Now the real Doctor Doom is pissed and has shut down New York City until the assassin is brought to him. Spider-Man finds the culprit with the help of his sister Theresa. They try to trick Victor in the end but he doesn't fall for it. It's a classic cliffhanger ending.
Doctor Doom #3 - Christopher Cantwell (writer) Salvador Larroca (art) Guru-eFX (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). So this Doc Doom is different from the one in The Amazing Spider-Man #35 even though they were both shot to start a war between Latveria and Symkaria. This is the real one. I really liked how Victor makes Mephisto his whipping boy. The surprise ending made me groan. And that's not to mention the inconsistency between panels 2 and 4 on page one. Very bad editing.
Marauders #3 - Gerry Duggan (writer) Michele Bandini (pencils) Michele Bandini & Elisabetta D'Amico (inks) Federico Blee (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). This X-book is for fans of political intrigue. The Black King, Sebastian Shaw inducts his resurrected son Shinobi into the Hellfire Club. Consider this X-Men: Game of Thrones. This is a lot more interesting than watching Kitty sail around rescuing other mutants.
Lois Lane #6 - Greg Rucka (writer) Mike Perkins (art) Gabe Eltaeb (colours) Simon Bowland (letters). Wow if the funeral for (spoiler alert) Alfred is as well done as this funeral for Lois's father it will be well worth the read. Lois has come a long way since she first appeared in comic books.
Annihilation - Scourge Fantastic Four #1 - Christos Gage (writer) Diego Olortegui (pencils) Juan Vlasco, Cam Smith & Scott Hanna (inks) Erick Arciniega (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). The team goes to the Negative Zone to help fight the scourge from the Cancerverse and encounter the Ftaghn Four, infected versions of themselves. I knew it was a ftaghn bad idea to read these one shots. The art was nice though.
20XX #1 - Jonathan Luna & Lauren Keely (writers) Jonathan Luna (art & letters). This new black & white book takes place in a future where a deadly virus either kills you or gives you special mind control powers if you survive. Survivors are designated Syms and are monitored by the government like sex offenders. It is illegal to use your powers so Syms have to be careful. Meria Bree Moore is a recent Sym and this is her story. I have yet to be disappointed by anything Jonathan Luna has done and this is no exception. Rest assured that I will want to read the rest of this story.
Black Cat #7 - Jed MacKay (writer) Travel Foreman (art) Brian Reber (colours) Ferran Delgado (letters). This is an excellent issue where Felicia rescues the Fox from the clutches of Odessa. Unfortunately the inconsistent art was very distracting. They should have found an inker to render Travel's pencils.
Batman Universe #6 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Nick Derington (art) Dave Stewart (colours) A Larger World's Troy Peteri (letters). I liked how Batman used deductive reasoning to get out of his white prison. It could have been an uh-oh situation when Vandal Savage gets his hands on the White Power Ring but he was set up to fail quite cleverly. I've noticed that there's always an "AGH" in every comic book that Brian writes and when Bruce Wayne asks the Riddler where Vandal Savage, AKA Vandar Adg is I had to say "har".
Conan Serpent War #1 - Jim Zub (writer) Scot Eaton (pencils) Scott Hanna (inks) Frank D'Armata (colours) Vanesa R. Del Rey (art: James Allison sequence) Jean-Francois Beaulieu (colours: James Allison sequence) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). Conan must face the serpent god Set but this time he's going to be teamed up with other heroes. There's Moon Knight, Solomon Kane and Dark Agnes (because another company has the rights to Red Sonja I'm sure). Jim writes in a style similar to Robert E. Howard so this was an enjoyable read. The art isn't bad and I liked the homage to Barry Smith with Conan's horned helmet and necklace. Let's see how many times the Cimmerian exclaims "by Crom" in this story.
Thor: The Worthy #1 - This one-shot would be right at home on the racks in the nineteen seventies. There are three tales of others who have been deemed worthy of wielding the hammer.
"Beyond the Field We Know…" by Walt Simonson (writer) Mike Hawthorne (pencils) Sal Buscema (inks) Tamra Bonvillain (colours) & John Workman (letters) has Beta Ray Bill teamed up with the Lady Sif to fight a rock troll. I forgot that those two were romantically linked in the past.
"Hearts of Stone, Feet of Clay" by Tom DeFalco (writer) Ron Frenz (plot & pencils) Keith Williams (inks) Rachelle Rosenberg (colours) & VC's Clayton Cowles (letters) features Eric Masterson as Thunderstrike versus the Grey Gargoyle. This tale was cheesy with the inclusion of the police strike force Code: Blue. They tried to give it a modern twist by having a lesbian couple in the story.
And finally "Rules of Reflection" by Kathryn Immonen (writer) Tom Reilly (art) Chris O'Halloran (colours) & VC's Clayton Cowles (letters) sees the Lady Sif figuring out that the new female Thor is really Jane Foster. It's in the last words Sif says to Thor in the last panel of the second to last page. Har.
X-Men #3 - Jonathan Hickman (writer) Leinil Francis Yu (pencils) Gerry Alanguilan & Leinil Francis Yu (inks) Sunny Gho & Rain Beredo (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). I've been waiting for new super villains to show up to challenge the X-Men and this issue delivers. Meet the not so helpless little old ladies of Hordeculture, average age 71. Agrochemist Augusta Bromes, bioengineer Opal Vetiver, geneticist Lily Leymus and botanical engineer Edith Scutch. They want to return planet earth to it's pristine Garden of Eden condition by eliminating most of humanity. I like them.
Annihilation - Scourge Nova #1 - Matthew Rosenberg (writer) Ibraim Roberson (art) Carlos Lopez (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). This was better than the FF one-shot that hit the racks at the same time. I got a few chuckles catching up with Richard Rider. You don't even have to know anything about this cosmic super hero because the first three pages explain his entire existence up to this point. My enjoyment of this made me want to check out the Silver Surfer and Beta Ray Bill one-shots that will hit the racks December 11.
