April is National Poetry Month!

In this clip, UW Professor Emeritus Daniel Kunene tells the story that inspired his celebrated poem “Soweto,” which was adapted into a chorale and orchestra piece by Dutch composer Bernard van Beuden in 1990.

In his 2005-2006 interview with the Oral History Program, Professor Kunene describes his childhood and education in South Africa, where his literacy allowed him to contribute to his poor community from an early age. He talks about apartheid in the university system, and the inability of black South Africans to purchase property or live in many areas.

In 1963 and ’64, Kunene traveled to London and the US as a representative of the University of Cape Town. Beginning as a professor at UCLA, Kunene came to the University of Wisconsin in 1970, following the death of his longtime mentor, A.C. Jordan, co-founder of the UW Department of African Languages and Literature. In his oral history interview, Kunene recounts his reaction to the JFK assassination, his impressions of civil rights struggles in Los Angeles, the sexual revolution, and political activism on the UW campus in the 1970s.

Kunene served as chair of the newly formed Afro-American Studies Department from 1971 to 1973. In his 33 years in Madison, Kunene’s writing included sixteen books on African poetry as well as hundreds of publications of own creative work. Particularly, as a pioneer researcher in African literature, Kunene highlighted the ways African poets translated the rhythm and rhetoric of oral tradition into written verse.

Professor Kunene passed away in May 2016, at the age of 93.

Brathering, Inselparadies, Häckelnadel

Blut! Überall war Blut. Er lag an einem weißen Sandstrand bevor er sich aufgesetzt hatte. Und sah das blutige Durcheinander in dessen Mitt er sich befand.

Er wusste nicht genau wo er sich befand. Seine letzte Erinnerung war der Brathering den er an Bord der Boing gegessen hatte. Und dann war er an einem Strand in einem Inselparadies aufgewacht, nur das der Strand mit Blut überschwemmt worden war, wie es schien.

Sie beobachtete ihn. Einen weiteren Überlebenden des Absturzes. Sie beuden wussten nicht wie er herkam. Das war ihr auch egal! Ihr Magen knurrte! Sie umfasste die Häckelnadel fester!
