CLEAR IT UP

Plain and simple, Bev is SEWWWW crazy, she can’t get over designing with plastic. Bev is SEWWW crazy, she speaks about herself in 3rd person! Haha!

*Photo Credit @Qwiththecamera on Instagram*  I’ve been slowly but diligently creating my WHOLE wardrobe. Pretty soon, my entire closet will be full of clothing I’ve made myself..in all of its weird glory..and that my friend.. is bliss.  Although I am usually overdressed, I thought it would be a good idea to create more casual, but eccentric pieces that people can still relate to. This top seemed like a great addition.

As I was perusing Pinterest, I fell upon a photo of a clear shirt with cute smiley face stickers on it. I instantly thought that THAT would be something I could remix.  I draped a pattern on my mannequin, did a self-fitting and began cutting pieces from scrap vinyl [plastic] I had in my stash.  Using denim scraps for a binding and detail was an afterthought, but it worked out so well.

Instead of putting mindless motifs on my top, I intentionally sought out imagery that was encouraging and displayed an important aspect of my personality, fun. I purchased empowering stickers of beautiful melanated women from Zola Nation. I also used stickers of positive affirmations from Forever 21. It is important to me that we clear up negative self-talk and ideas that plague our minds every day due to many influences and stimuli.  

This top also illustrates my quirkiness and carefree attitude. You can “see thru” it while viewing my fun, whimsical, youthful spirit. The clear crown followed behind it. I mean... why not have a clear hat to match?!  To have the hat be able to stand up in its royal highness, I made it multi-paneled to give it structure. Also bound by denim scraps, it is a great accessory to any fly outfit.

It is SO imperative that we as women, clear up the doubt, low self-esteem, bitterness, insecurity and anything else that may be holding us Goddesses back from being and feeling great. Making it POP with STEAM!

Guess who is leading a DIY WORKSHOP for the youth this month??? Yes, yours truly! I am so grateful to have this opportunity to empower and inspire adolescents that wouldn’t normally be exposed to the art of fashion design. Making it POP with STEAM workshop will be hosted by eSTEAMED Learning Inc., an organization that collaborates with the community, STEM industry and its partners to develop and provide science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics(STEAM) project-based learning(PBL) opportunities to underserved communities. 

CEO and Founder of ESTEAMED Learning, Candace Finley and I will be working together to demonstrate how STEAM can be used to make a fashion statement out of your old clothes and shoes. No need to follow the new trends when you can be one! It will be held for at the Northwest Community Center in Orlando, FL 10am to 1pm. From age 5 to 17, all spaces are filled but I hope to lead more events like this! Here are some of the projects we will be doing below:

Embellishing shoes with various textiles

Kwasi has finished his last beginner sewing lesson. 💪🏾 He chose to make a Kufi (small fitted hat)👑 as his final project that pulls in all of the fundamentals he's learned over the past couple of weeks.
