Sweet Nothing (Ethan x f!MC)
Book: Open Heart
Characters: Ethan Ramsey x Natalie Cusack
Word count:Â 855
Summary: Nat and Ethan face speculation over their relationship.
Rating:Â T
Category: Fluff
Authorâs Note:Â IâM BACK, BITCHES! Well, kind of. Iâm really just here to get this out of my brain then I plan on returning to my self-imposed hiatus.Â
This was based off a shower thought I had relating to the news of Taylor Swift and Joe Alwynâs break up (Iâm still absolutely devasted over this news, by the way). So, yeah, hereâs a little fluff for your Tuesday. Enjoy!
*scurries off back to Hobbit Hole*
Natalie furrowed her brows as the âBreaking Newsâ from Scoop Magazine appeared on her iPad screen. She scanned the headline and opened up the article, her curiosity getting the better of her.
BREAKING NEWS:Â
Celebrity doctors and medical powerhouse couple file for divorce! Dr. Natalie Cusack-Ramsey and Dr. Ethan Ramsey are separating after just ten months of marriage! Dr. Cusack-Ramsey was recently spotted out and about without her wedding ring, causing speculation on her relationship with her new husband. Shortly after that sighting, a source close to the couple confirmed that they are separating. The reason given for this separation was âirreconcilable differences.â
Scoop has reached out to both doctors for comment, but neither have yet to reply to our inquiries. Watch this space for further updates!
Nat cocked her head to the side as she read the article⌠then read it again.Â
âThe fuck?â Nat asked, in disbelief.
âHm?â Ethan replied from the kitchen.
She chuckled. âUh⌠apparently, weâre getting a divorce.â
Ethan stopped making coffee to look up at his wife and raise an eyebrow. âOh, are we?â
âAccording to Scoop,â she replied, waving the iPad.Â
Ethan rolled his eyes and returned his attention to the espresso machine. âUgh,â he stated. âWhy do you read that garbage magazine?â
âBecause usually itâs fun!â Nat replied, returning her attention to the article.Â
âMhm. And who exactly is telling these gossip rags that weâre divorcing?â
âSomeone close to us, apparently. We are separating due to âirreconcilable differences.ââ
âDo those irreconcilable differences include you putting your cold feet on my back every night?â
âHey! Itâs not every night!â Nat protested. She lifted her feet for him to see. âIâm even wearing socks today! See?â
Ethan chuckled and nodded. âMy bare back thanks you.â Natalie stuck her tongue out at him, a gesture he returned right back at her.
She looked back at the iPad. âAccording to the article, speculation started when I was ârecently seen out and about without my wedding ring.ââÂ
Ethan hummed in response, as he stirred his coffee. âThis wouldnât happen to be the same wedding ring that no longer fits your finger, would it?â
Nat wiggled her slightly swollen fingers. âItâs not my fault.â
âAre you suggesting itâs mine?â he replied, fighting a smile.
âWell, Iâm certainly not the one who got me pregnant!â
Ethan laughed and joined her on the sofa, placing his coffee on the side table. âIâm pretty sure it takes two people to make a baby, my love.â
She scrunched her nose. âMm, not necessarily.â
He snorted and kissed her temple. âWith us, it did,â he whispered into her ear.Â
Nat felt a chill run down her spine and giggled. âEither way, youâre still responsible for my fingers being like this,â she said, holding up her hand.Â
He took her hand and placed a soft kiss on each finger, then held her hand close to his chest. âI assure you: your fingers are still quite beautiful.â
Nat frowned. âEven when theyâre swollen?â
âEspecially then.â The iPad dinged again and Ethan looked at it, frowning. âAs for this article,â he said the word with clear disdain, âwe should probably nip it in the bud while we still can.â
âDo we need to?â Nat asked. âI was just thinking we could ignore it.â
âMm,â Ethan scrunched his face in disagreement, âI think we need to shut it down. Before any other outlets pick up on this trash.â
Nat chuckled. âYou really donât like gossip columns, do you?â
âI just think there are other things we should be putting our energy towards rather than worrying about people we donât know and their relationship. Our relationship is our business; no one elseâs.â
Nat nodded, smiling. âI like it when you get protective.â
Ethan raised an eyebrow. âDo you, now?â
âI do. Itâs sweet and⌠well, it makes me feel safe.â
Ethan gave her a small smile and pulled her close, wrapping her up tightly in his arms. âYouâre my life, Nat. And youâre carrying my son; of course, Iâm going to be protective. But I also just really want people to mind their own goddamn business.â
Nat nuzzled into his embrace, wrapping her arms around his midsection. âWell said.âÂ
He kissed the top of her head. âAnd, just for the record, if we were to separate for irreconcilable differences, it would definitely be because of your cold feet.â
Natalie scoffed in disbelief. âRude!âÂ
She pulled out of the embrace to lightly whack him but he caught her hand in his and pulled her back to him, kissing her soundly.Â
She broke the kiss briefly to mutter âYouâre a little shit,â against his lips.
âYou love it,â he returned, peppering kisses on her face.
Nat chuckled. âI do.â
BREAKING NEWS UPDATE:
A few days ago, Scoop reported a story stating that Drs. Ethan Ramsey and Natalie Cusack-Ramsey were divorcing. Scoop has now learned that the information given to Scoop was false and inaccurate. Dr. Cusack-Ramsey has confirmed with Scoop that her marriage is strong and not at risk of divorce in any way.Â
Scoop deeply apologizes for any harm or distress caused by our previous article.Â
A/N: So... I definitely HC that Landry was the âsourceâ that claimed E & N were separating. Forever the sore loser, that one...

Their Little Bear (Ethan x f!MC)
Book: Open Heart
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x Natalie Cusack
Special Appearance: Noah Cusack
Word count: 670
Summary: While out shopping for their little arrival, Ethan falls in love with an unexpected item.
Rating: T
Category: Fluff and feels.
Authorâs Note: Dedicated to @genevievemdâ and @danijimenezvâ for both showing me the IG video that inspired this fic and encouraging the chaos that followed. Hope I did this justice, my loves! đ
Natalie scanned the aisles of the baby store, looking at all the various supplies they would need. The nursery had already been painted and baby proofed. Now, the fun part began: shopping.
They still had a few months before their son was due but, being the planners that they are, Nat & Ethan wanted to leave nothing to chance. By the time the baby was born, they wanted to focus exclusively on him, and nothing else. Nat stopped in front of some rocking chairs and inspected each one, determining which she thought would be the most comfortable. Narrowing down her choices, she nodded to herself, then made her way over to the clothing section where she had last seen Ethan.
She found her husband standing in front of a rack of onesies, holding a small brown onesie in his hands, his thumbs running absent-mindedly over the fabric. âHey E, will you come look at some rocking chairs and tell me which one you like better?â she said, approaching him.
Ethan didnât immediately respond, his eyes glazed over as he stared at the onesie. Nat cocked her head to the side and lightly touched his shoulder. âE?â
He perked up at her touch and his eyes refocused. âHm? Sorry, love. Did you say something?â
âAre you okay?â she asked.
He gave her a small smile. âYeah, Iâm fine.â
She studied him for a moment before determining that he was telling the truth. She looked down at the onesie in his hands and smiled. âDo you like that one?â she asked.
He looked back down at it, his eyes lighting up. âIs it ridiculous if I say yes?â
âOf course not!â Nat replied. âI think itâs cute! But I never pegged you as the type of person whoâd want to dress up our baby in an animal onesie.â
âIâm not, usually, butâŚâ
âBut?â
He shrugged, sheepishly. âWhen I look at this, I have this image in my head of our son wearing this and I⌠Iâm kind of obsessed with the idea.â He laughed. âI donât know why, I just am.â
Natalie grinned. âEthan, I love that idea. Letâs get it!â
âReally?â
âReally,â she nodded. âHeâll be our little bear cub.â
âI thought we were Rams for Ramsey?â he replied, smirking.
Nat shrugged. âWhen you find a cute ram onesie, weâll talk about changing it. For now, heâll be our little bear.â
Ethan beamed at her and placed the onesie in the basket he had been carrying. âFor our little bear, then.â
------------------------
A Few Months Later
Ethan smiled down at his newborn son as he gently zipped up the onesie around his small body. Little Noah wiggled around and cooed at his father, making Ethanâs heart swell with overwhelming love. He leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on his sonâs forehead before picking him up and carrying him out into the living room.
Nat was sitting on the sofa, watching television when Ethan appeared with the baby in his arms. Natâs face lit up at the sight of her son in the bear onesie they had bought for him all those months ago. âHi my little Bear,â she said, her voice rising an octave as the baby was passed to her arms. âLook how cute you are!â
âI gotta say, Nat: we made one cute baby,â Ethan said, sitting down next to her.
Natalie smiled as little Noah wrapped his tiny hand around her index finger. âYeah, we did. It helps that his father has such good taste in onesies,â she replied, looking at him.
He kissed her forehead and smiled down at their son. âHeâs the cutest bear Iâve ever seen,â he said, quietly.
âOur little Noah Bear,â Nat replied.
Noah looked up at both his parents with his bright blue eyes and cooed. Ethan rested his chin on Natalieâs shoulder, his cheeks beginning to hurt from smiling so much. âI love you,â he whispered into Natâs ear.
âI love you more,â she replied.
He kissed her cheek. âNever.â
A/N: Noah would outgrow the onesie, but this nickname would stick for life.

Better Days (Open Heart)
Book: Open Heart
Characters: Ethan Ramsey x Natalie Cusack
Special Appearance(s): The Ramsack Kids
Word count: 863
Summary:Â The Ramsey's reminisce about a loved one, now gone.
Rating:Â T
Category: Angst
Authorâs Note: I'm sorry!! Iâm sorry, Iâm sorry, Iâm sorry! I wasnât planning on writing this (@genevievemd and @potionsprefect) even told me not to but then @jerzwriter and @lucy-268â encourage this so, really, if youâre gonna blame anyone, blame them! OKAY IâM SORRY, LOVE YOU BYYYEEEEE!!! đ
âDad?â Noah said, quietly. They were sitting in the den, Noah and his sisters huddled together on the sofa, while Ethan sat in a large armchair, standing by the window. He hummed quietly in response to Noahâs question.
âWill you tell us about her?â He asked.
Ethan turned his head to look at his children, and his heart tightened. As much pain and torment as he was in, right now, it was likely nothing compared to what his children were feeling. They were young; they were only just now grasping how cruel the world could be⌠whereas Ethan had known for a long time. He thought heâd found peace and happiness after a lifetime of pain and hurt, only to have it ripped from his fingers in an instant. His heart was in pieces, never to be fully healed ever again. But he still had his children⌠their children. Her children.
The little boy who looked so much like Ethan but had her mannerisms and smile. The two little girls who were carbon copies of her, down to the flecks of green in both of their eyes. All three of them had a piece of her in them, and though it would never make up for her loss, it meant more than Ethan could ever say that a part of her lived on in the three beings they had made together.
Ethan hadnât just lost his wife; his children had lost their mother. And right now, they wanted to know more about her. They wanted to keep her alive in their memories. The least he could do was oblige.
He gave his children a small smile and nodded. âWhat would you like to know?â
âEverything,â Evie replied.
Ethanâs smile grew and he leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. âYour mother⌠she was everything. She lit up every room she walked into, she had a laugh that was so infectious, it caused everyone else around her to laugh too. She had such a warm, open personality. All it took was one smile from her, and everyone who met her fell in love.â
His children were enraptured, hanging onto his every word. His heart sped up at the memories of Natalieâs smile, the twinkle in her eyes when she was about to laugh, the feel of her lips on his. God, he missed her. He missed her so much.
âShe had a heart of gold,â he continued. âShe became a doctor because she wanted to help people; and help people, she did. She saved so many lives and changed countless others for the better. In her intern year, she stole a potentially life saving medicine for a patient just so that patient could travel the world. She nearly lost her medical license for it but she would have done it again in a heartbeat if it meant that someone got to truly live.Â
âShe saved Grandpa Naveenâs life too. When I had given up on finding him a cure, she kept going and found the solution that would save his life. He told me heâs always been grateful to her for thatâŚ
âShe changed my life too. Before I met her, I was a shell of a person. I didnât have much to live for except work, and I thought that it was enough. God, I was so wrong. She came into my life like a shooting star, lighting up everything that had previously been dark. I didnât realize how much I needed the light until she brought it to me.
âYour motherâŚâ his voice cracked, and he wiped away the tears that were starting to fall. âShe gave me a reason to believe in love. She made me believe in soulmates. I wouldnât be the man I am today if it wasnât for her. She didnât just change my life⌠she made it better.â
He got out of the chair and moved towards his children on the couch, crouching down in front of them. âI miss your mother so much. I will miss her for the rest of my life. But Iâm so grateful for the time I had with her. Iâm grateful to her for so many things, but especially because she gave me you three. I see so much of her in you. My two beautiful little girls who look just like her, and my sweet Bear who inherited her kind heart.âÂ
Ethan took their hands in his, and squeezed. âIâm so sorry she was taken from us. Iâm so sorry that we couldnât save her. But I promise you this: I will always be here. Anytime you need me, I will be here for you. You three are my greatest treasures, and I will protect you and love you, now and always. I love you three, so much.â
He opened his arms and Noah, Evie, and little Lydia squeezed themselves into his embrace. Ethan held them closely, burying his face into their hair.
âI love you,â he whispered to his children.
âWe love you more, Dad,â Noah and Evie replied. Little Lydia nodded in agreement.
Ethan kissed the tops of their heads and held them tighter. âNever,â he whispered.

Jealousy, Jealousy (Ethan x f!MC)
Book: Open Heart
Characters: Ethan Ramsey x Natalie Cusack
Special Appearance: Elizabeth White (OC)
Word count: 1720
Summary: Nat wasnât the type to get jealous. But when she meets her, things begin to change.
Rating: T
Category: Angst; Hurt/Comfort
Authorâs Note: Iâve been trying to write this jealousy fic for months and while vacuuming of all things, I got some inspiration and was able to get this written down! Shoutout to @genevievemdâ for proofreading this for me! Youâre a gem, dear Brain Twin! đ
Natalie watched as Ethan schmoozed and networked with investors and stakeholders, smiling to herself. Ethan may have hated these types of events, but she had to admit: he was good. His charming smile and assertive manner made for quite the impression and nearly everyone he spoke to left dazzled by the Great Ethan Ramsey.
As he split from the latest investor he was speaking to, he walked over to her and smiled, making her heart skip a beat. He leaned down and kissed her softly. She smiled up at him when they broke apart. âI know this isnât your cup of tea, but youâre kind of rocking it out there,â she said.
He shrugged. âThanks. Like it or not, we need investors and stakeholders and if I have to schmooze a few to ensure the hospital continues to thrive, Iâm willing to suffer through it.â
âWell, just know, your sacrifice is appreciated,â Nat said, laughing.
Ethan rolled his eyes and smiled, before looking back out over the crowd of people. Natalie noticed when he spotted someone, as his body straightened up immediately. She expected a look of grudging acceptance of his fate, but instead she saw his eyes light up and a beaming smile grace his lips. âElizabeth!â he exclaimed.
Natalie followed his gaze to find a beautiful blonde woman, around Ethanâs age, approach them, smiling. âWell, Iâll be damned,â she said in a lilting British accent. âEthan Ramsey, in the flesh.â
The two embraced tightly, and Natalie couldn't help but notice how at ease the two seemed with each other. When they separated, Ethan gestured to Natalie. âNat, this is an old friend of mine, Elizabeth White. Liz, this is Dr. Natalie Cusack. Sheâs Co-Head of the Diagnostics Team with me and a brilliant doctor all around.â
Elizabeth smiled warmly at Natalie and shook her head. âPleasure to meet you, Dr. Cusack.â
âNatalieâs just fine,â Nat replied, returning the womanâs smile. Is this the same Liz as his Undergrad girlfriend? She thought to herself. And why didnât he introduce me as his girlfriend? He always introduces me as his girlfriend first.
Natalie shook her head, trying to get the thoughts that were flooding her brain to quiet down. As she tuned back into the conversation, she watched Ethan and Elizabeth converse with practiced ease. âWhat are you doing here?â Ethan asked.
âSame as you: working,â she replied. âIâm working with some non-profit organizations to boost their donations and public awareness. Basically, Iâm doing a lot of schmoozing.â
Ethan laughed. âWe have that in common, then.â
âStill hating every second of it?â she asked.
He nodded, chuckling. âAbsolutely.â
âGood to know some things never change, then.â
Natalie listened to the conversation, contributing where she could, as unease settled into her stomach. What was wrong with her? Was she⌠jealous? Noooo. She wasnât the jealous type. It wasnât like her to feel this way around other women, especially Ethanâs exes. Granted, the only other ex she had ever met was Harper, but Harper was a trusted colleague and friend. And Nat had never been jealous of Harper, ever.Â
So, why was Elizabeth different?
âAnd how is dear Tobias?â she heard Elizabeth ask. âAre you two still causing trouble everywhere you go?â
âUs? Never!â Ethan replied, exaggeratedly.
God, there was so much history here. Probably more than Nat had ever realized. She looked over Elizabeth again and couldnât help but compare the older woman to herself.
Elizabeth exuded elegance, dressed in a designer navy blue pantsuit, her blonde hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail. Meanwhile, Nat was in an old black cocktail dress she bought for her Undergrad School graduation and her hair was down, in its natural wavy state, frizzing up due to the humidity from the afternoonâs previous rainstorm. By comparison, Nat didnât hold a torch to Elizabeth. And with every passing moment, Natalie felt more and more inadequate. And all she wanted to do was get the hell out of here.
Blessedly, someone called Elizabethâs name from across the room and the woman smiled sheepishly. âDuty calls,â she said. She hugged Ethan again as she said her goodbyes. âIt was absolutely lovely to see you, Ethan. And it was a delight meeting you, Natalie.â
âLikewise,â Nat said, forcing a smile.
She watched as Elizabeth walked away and fought the urge to hide in the nearest bathroom and scream into a hand towel.
Ethan turned his attention back to Nat and furrowed his brows, a look of concern shadowing his features. âAre you okay?â
She shook her head. âIâm not feeling very well,â she said. âCan we get out of here?â
âOf course.â Without wasting another moment, Ethan ushered the two of them out of the event and back into the car. The entire ride back home, Ethan continued to check on her, asking if she was alright; Nat merely hummed in response, staring out the window the entire time. Her thoughts were racing in her head and she couldnât quiet them enough to think of a better response.
By the time they got home, Ethan was nearly at his witâs end trying to figure out what was wrong. âNat, please talk to me. Youâre starting to scare me.â
She was staring out the patio door, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. Donât cry, donât cry, donât cry.
âNat?â
A reasoning voice sounded off in her head. Tell him! Youâre the one who insists on communication. Tell him whatâs wrong. The tears sheâd been holding back started to fall, and she sucked in a deep breath. âYou didnât introduce me as your girlfriend.â
âWhat?â
She sniffled, and forcibly wiped the escaping tears away. âWhen you introduced me to Elizabeth. You didnât introduce me as your girlfriend. You always introduce me as âThis is my girlfriend, Natalie, my Co-Head of Diagnostics.â Instead, it was just âDr. Cusack.ââ
âI-- Iâm sorry, Nat. I didnât realize that was important to you.â
âWell, it is!â She snapped. She covered her face with her hand and fought the sob that wanted to escape. âSorry,â she whispered.
âNat, will you look at me, please?â Ethan said, stepping closer to her.
She sniffled and did as he asked. His eyes flashed with concern as he looked over the devastation on her face. âNat--â
âI know itâs stupid,â she said, pulling away from him. âWeâre adults, I shouldnât be upset that you didnât call me your girlfriend but sheâs your ex and itâs the first time I met her and instead of being introduced as your girlfriend, I was just introduced as your colleague and--â she was rambling now, âand it just made me feel less than, okay?!
âSheâs fucking perfect. She has the designer suits, the accomplishments, the hair, and sheâs blonde and I--â she looked down at herself, âIâm not. I donât have any of that.â She wrapped her arms around herself again, a protective position sheâd had since she was a child.Â
âOh, Nat,â Ethan said. He slowly stepped toward her again.
âI know, itâs stupid. Iâm just being stupid.â
âDonât you dare say that about yourself,â Ethan said, firmly. He stepped closer to her again, closing the distance between them. âNatalie, baby, listen to me.â He placed his fingers under her chin and moved her face so she was looking at him. âYou are not stupid, in any way at all. Your feelings are valid, remember that.â
He cupped her cheeks with his hands and used his thumbs to gently wipe away her tears. âFirst of all, I want to apologize for not introducing you as my girlfriend. Youâre right, I didnât introduce you with that title first and I should have. But Iâm just so damn proud of you that I wanted to showcase your accomplishments. It didnât occur to me that my omitting âgirlfriendâ would have hurt you. Iâm sorry that it did and Iâll be sure not to make that mistake again.
âSecondly, Elizabeth might be accomplished in her career field but that doesnât make you any less accomplished than she is. Youâre the youngest fellow the Diagnostics Team has ever had, not to mention Co-Head of said team. You saved Naveenâs life as an intern and youâre paving the way to make healthcare more affordable for those without insurance. These arenât things to sniff at, Nat. Youâre making more of a difference than you realize.
âAnd thirdly, designer suits and nice hair donât define a person, my love. You are a phenomenal person just the way you are, and you donât need anything fancy to prove that. That being said, if you want the designer suits, Iâm more than happy to give you my card and let you go shopping.â
A small smile appeared on Natâs lips and she shook her head. Ethan returned her smile. âLastly,â he continued, âLiz may be my ex, yes. But that period ended for us a long time ago. Sheâs happily married now and I consider her to be nothing more than a dear friend. You, on the other hand, are everything to me. You are the love of my life and nothing is going to change that, Natalie. Nothing.â She sniffled and he wiped more escaped tears away. âBaby, you are the woman Iâm going to spend the rest of my life with. You are the one that I want day and night. And it doesnât matter to me whether youâre in a designer suit or sweat pants and an oversized t-shirt; you are fucking beautiful and perfect in my eyes, always.â
Natalie nodded and sniffled again. âIâm sorry. I feel like such a dick, now.â
Ethan shook his head and pulled her into a tight embrace, kissing the top of her head. âDonât feel that way. Youâre allowed to feel the things you feel. Just, donât shut me out again, okay? I canât ease your concerns if you donât tell me about them.â
Nat nodded. âOkay, I promise.â
âI love you, Nat. Always.â
âI love you too.â
They held each other for a long moment before Ethan pulled back and placed a soft kiss on her forehead. âAnd for the record,â he whispered against her skin, âI much prefer redheads.â
Natalie giggled and Ethan grinned before kissing her soundly on the lips, letting the last of her worries fade away.

Exile (An Open Heart Fic)
Book: Open Heart
Characters: Ethan Ramsey, Natalie Cusack (MC)
Special Appearance: Damien Calabaza (OC)
Word count: ~1000
Summary: He comes to terms with knowing that sheâs happier with someone else.
Rating: T
Category: Angst? Ish?
Authorâs Note: You ever come across a song that youâve listened to a million times but this time it hits different and suddenly youâre overcome with inspiration? That happened last night with Exile by Taylor Swift. This is the result. Enjoy!
Also, special thanks to @liaromancewriterâ and @jerzwriterâ for helping me figure out some nitty gritty details. Yâall are the best! đ
He didnât belong here.Â
These werenât his people, no matter how hard they tried to make him believe they were. These people showed off their wealth and their connections at every turn, which only made them feel more like phonies than anything else.
He adjusted the bowtie around his neck and sipped his drink, waiting until it was an appropriate time for him to leave.
He scanned the crowd around him, finding most everyone exceedingly boring or snobbish, until his eyes fell upon a familiar head of bright red hair. His eyes widened as the head turned and he saw Natalie, smiling and laughing with a group of people he didnât recognize.Â
She looked beautiful. She always had been, but now, with her deep blue gown and her hair curled, falling around her face, she looked almost ethereal.Â
He didnât realize he had been staring until she made eye contact with him. It only took a moment for her to recognize him, but when she did, she gave him that dazzling smile of hers and immediately began to make her way over to him. His heart skipped a beat and he quickly checked his appearance in the nearby window before she appeared. When he turned back to look at her, his heart got stuck in his throat hearing his name on her lips again.
âDamien!â She exclaimed. She opened her arms wide and pulled him into a tight hug. He returned her hug just as tightly.Â
âWhat are you doing here?â She asked, pulling out of the embrace.
Damien smiled sheepishly. âIâve taken on an Assistant Professor position at Columbia. Iâll be teaching classes on Environmental Engineering. My appearance at this event is my âcoming outâ to the other academics and high society folk of New York.â
Natalie grinned. âWhat?! Damien, thatâs amazing! Congratulations!!â
His smile widened. âThank you, Nat. What are you doing in New York? I thought you were in Boston?â
âOh, I am. Iâm just here for a medical conference. My mentorâs the Keynote speaker this year. And... I may or may not be speaking on a panel about affordable patient care as well.â
âLook at you, moving up in the world,â he said, smiling with pride.
Natalie laughed. âWe both did pretty good for ourselves, huh?â
âYou could say that.â
She took her hand in his and he fought the urge to squeeze it. âCome on, thereâs someone I want you to meet!â
Following her lead, Damien stuck close to her as she led him across the room towards the back, where a tall man in a sharp suit was in conversation with an older couple.
âEthan!â Natalie called as they approached.
The man called Ethan turned around and smiled at her, excusing himself from his previous conversation. Natalie let go of Damienâs hand and reached out for Ethan, placing a gentle hand on his forearm. âE, thereâs someone I want you to meet.â She turned back to Damien.
âDamien Calabaza, meet Dr. Ethan Ramsey. Ethan, this is my dear friend Damien.â
âAh, the engineer,â Ethan said, smiling and shaking Damienâs hand. âI read your article in the Times on renewable energy resources. I was very impressed.â
âThank you,â Damien replied, his eyes narrowing in concentration. âAre you that Ethan Ramsey? The one Nat never shut up about?â
Natalie lightly punched Damienâs shoulder while Ethan laughed and nodded. âThe very same.â
Damien smiled. âLook at you, Nat. Meeting and working with your hero. Teenage you would have fainted.â
Nat rolled her eyes and chuckled. âNah, teenage me would have fangirled a little hard but she wouldnât have fainted. Finding out sheâs engaged to her medical hero though? That would have made her faint!â
Damienâs stomach dropped as he glanced down and noticed, for the first time, the diamond ring sitting on Natâs left hand. He had always held a torch for Nat, even all these years later. He knew it had been foolish, but he had hoped sheâd been unattached. Now, he knew she wouldnât be ever again.
He cleared his throat and forced a smile. âForgive me, I didnât realize. Congratulations! Whenâs the wedding?â
âOctober,â Ethan answered. âThough Iâd be happy with a simple courthouse wedding.â
âAnd face my motherâs wrath?â Nat said. âNo way in hell am I risking that.â
Damien nodded. âYeah, thatâs smart. Iâve only seen your mom mad once and it still haunts me.â
âSee?â Nat said, pointing at Damien. âHe knows!â
Ethan laughed. âFair enough.â
The three continued to stand a chat for a while, Damien observing how well attuned Nat & Ethan were with each other. When he moved, she moved, when he stopped speaking, she kept the conversation going. It was clear to anyone who looked at them that they were a perfect pair. And even though Damien didnât want to admit it, he liked Ethan. Despite being one of the best doctors in the country, Ethan was very down to earth and not at all like the snobs that populated this event. No wonder Nat was drawn to him.
Eventually, the conversation came to a natural end. Ethan glanced around them and whispered conspiratorially. âThink we can get out of here now?â
Natalie nodded âDefinitely. Weâve been here long enough to leave without anyone raising a stink.â
Nat pulled Damien into a tight hug goodbye. âDonât be a stranger, okay? Keep in touch. Oh, and reach out to Dani! Sheâs also here in New York, and I know sheâd love to see you.â
âWill do,â Damien replied, smiling. He turned to Ethan and shook his hand. âGood to you meet you, Dr. Ramsey.â
âEthan, please. And the pleasure was mine. I look forward to hearing more about your work in the future.â
Damien watched as Ethan wrapped his arm around Natalieâs shoulders as the two of them made their way out of the event. He smiled as he watched Natalie look up at Ethan and give him a gentle kiss on the cheek. He was happy for her. Sheâd found her person and was very clearly happy and thriving.Â
And maybe one day, heâd find that for himself as well.

Sandalwood & Lavender
Book: Open Heart
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x Natalie Cusack
Word count: 372
Summary: They are everything to each other.
Rating: T
Authorâs Note: *waves* Uh... hi! So, I realize itâs been a while. Truth is, this is the first time Iâve sat down to write something in months. And I canât promise that Iâm going to dive right back into it and pump out stories faster than a gas station. But this was more of a challenge for myself to get back into writing, even if it was just a short little drabble like this one turned out. Thank you for your patience and your kindness. It means more than Iâll ever be able to put into words. Hope you enjoy.
Ethan was her home.
His bright blue eyes were her anchor; his smile, meant only for her, was her oxygen; his hand holding hers tightly calmed every storm in her mind. His familiar sandalwood scent was a comfort to her senses. When he held her in his arms, the rich, earthy smell of his cologne would fill her nose and she would smile, snuggling deeper into his embrace.
His heartbeat was the melody to her favorite song, his lips soothing her with whispers of reassurance and love during their late night talks. Her fingers laced with his, fitting perfectly together like two puzzle pieces. He was her heart and soul.Â
He was her home.
------------------------------------------
Natalie was his light.Â
On his darkest days, she would enter like a beacon of sunshine. He would give everything to sit in her company and soak up every ray of light she gave, forgetting what it ever felt like to sit in the darkness, alone.
She smelled like springtime; her lavender body wash and citrus shampoo filled his senses and it was as if he could feel himself come alive. He would bury his face into her hair, into her neck and shoulders, inhaling every inch of her intoxicating scent that he could. Her lips tasted of pomegranate chapstick and one taste was never enough. One kiss would turn into several before his lips would trail down her neck to her chest and stomach then even lower, until her fingers are gripping his hair and sheâs moaning his name. He would never tire of that sound.
Her smile was a masterpiece and her laugh like a symphony to his ears. Those blue-green eyes that he loved so much would sparkle like gems and his heart would skip a beat every time. On the nights he dreams of that horrible, gut wrenching day he nearly lost her, she is there, arms holding him tightly and a strong, steady heartbeat to reassure him that she is there and she will never leave him.Â
His heart was hers from the day he met her, of that he was certain. She was his heart, his soul, and everything in between. She was his light in the darkness.
She was his home.

The Perfect Moment (Ethan x f!MC)
Book: Open Heart
Characters: Ethan Ramsey x Natalie CusackÂ
Word count: 381
Summary: Itâs the perfect moment to tell her something important.
Rating: T
Category: Fluff. Nothing but fluff.
Authorâs Note: So, this is the result of a happy accident. I was going through my inbox, answering some asks and I stumbled onto an ask by an Anon who asked âWhen did Ethan & Nat first say âI love youâ to each other?â The ask included some other details but I got carried away with the first part, and this is the result. Enjoy!
Itâs been a week since the Hopeful Hearts Gala. A week since he kissed her in public, for all the hospital to see. A week since he proudly showed her off, not as his intern or his mentee, but as his girlfriend. Itâs been the best week of his life.
Theyâre watching a movie tonight. Nat wanted a quiet date night at home so they ordered some takeout and are watching one of her favorite classic films. About halfway in, she pauses the film and goes into the kitchen to refill their drinks. He follows her after a moment.
He comes up behind her, wraps his arms around her waist and rests his chin on her shoulder. She leans into his embrace, humming quietly to herself, and he knows it's time to tell her. Heâd been wanting to tell her for a while, but heâd wanted to wait until the right moment; maybe on one of their evening walks with Jenner or over a romantic candlelit dinner.
But right now, standing with her in his kitchen, he knows there will never be a more perfect moment than this one.
He places a gentle kiss on her neck, smiling at the quiet sigh that leaves her lips, then moves his lips slowly up to her ear. "I love you," he whispers.
Natalie stops what she's doing and turns around in his embrace to face him. She wraps her arms around his neck and smiles, making his heart skip a beat. "Really?" she asks.
He smiles and nods. "I always have. I always will."
Her smile grows. "Say it again."
He leans forward and gently presses his lips to hers. "I love you," he whispers again.
She kisses him searingly, tangling her fingers in his hair. His grip on her waist tightens and he pulls her impossibly closer. They kiss until they have to break for air, but even when they break apart, they donât move far from each other.
Leaning her forehead against his, Natalie nuzzles her nose with his. âI love you more,â she whispers.
âNever,â he replies. He kisses her again, more passionately than before, and in one movement, he picks her up and carries her into the bedroom. Both the drinks and the rest of the movie were forgotten.

Their First 40 Years (Ethan x f!MC)
Book: Open Heart
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x Natalie Cusack
Special Appearances: The Ramsack Kids
Word count: 727
Summary: Ethan and Natalie celebrate 40 years of their marriage.
Rating: T
Category: Fluff and feels.
Authorâs Note: This came to me as I was falling asleep last night and I wrote down some very scrambled and incoherent thoughts about it. This is the result. Please enjoy some feels! đ
Ethan looked around at the room, surrounded by their family and friends, and smiled to himself. Natalie was on his right, laughing at something Dani had said. Forty-plus years together and heâd never tire of the sound of Natalieâs infectious laugh or the way her face lit up with joy. His heart thumped in his chest and he reached over to her, squeezing her hand with his.
She turned to him and smiled, her eyes shining bright. He returned her smile before standing, taking his glass in his hand, and cleared his throat. âMay I have everyoneâs attention?â he asked.
The room quieted and turned their attention to him. He smiled and raised his glass slightly. âI would like to thank everyone for coming out and joining us tonight,â he began, scanning the faces in the room. He spotted his children sitting nearby and gave them a beaming smile before continuing. âI know I speak for Nat and myself when I say that we are so grateful to have all of you with us to celebrate the first--â he stopped himself, chuckling, âthe first forty years of our marriage.â
The guests laughed and Natalie beamed at him. âItâs no secret,â he continued, âthat the start of mine and Natâs relationship was a complicated one. I do realize I was the one complicating things but thatâs not important here.â He smiled at the sound of chuckles from some of their friends. He sobered as he began to speak again. âIt took almost losing Natalie to a tragic and avoidable attack that made me finally come to my senses and realize that life wasnât worth living if she wasnât by my side.
âEvery day since then, I have been grateful beyond measure to spend every available moment with Natalie. She has been my constant companion and my rock. She gave me three beautiful children and, together, we raised them to be some of the best individuals I have ever known.â He smiled again at their children, and all three raised their glasses to him. âEveryone who knows Natalie knows that she has a beautiful heart, an intelligent and brilliant mind, and a wicked sense of humor that leaves you laughing so hard, it hurts to breathe.â
He turned to Natalie and gave her his hand. She took it and stood next to him, smiling. âNatalie, you have brought so much joy and light into my life. I wouldnât be the man or father I am today without you by my side. May the next forty years of our lives together be just as wonderful as the first.â He pulled her close and raised his glass. âTo the love of my life: Natalie!â
âTo Natalie!â the guests echoed, raising their glasses.
âTo mom!â their children yelled, laughing.Â
Natalie smiled and kissed Ethan softly. âForty years together and you still manage to surprise me, Dr. Ramsey,â she said, quietly.
âGood to know I havenât grown too predictable,â he joked. As music started to play through the speakers, he extended his hand out to her. âMay I have this dance, Mrs. Ramsey?â
âYou may, Mr. Ramsey,â she replied.
Leading her onto the dance floor, Ethan pulled his wife close and began to slowly sway with her to the music. Other guests began to drift onto the dancefloor with their partners and soon, everyone was dancing and laughing together.Â
As Ethan and Natalie danced, he had a vision of a night similar to this one, many years ago:
They were dancing at the Hopeful Hearts Gala, surrounded by their friends, colleagues, and various benefactors; it had been such a difficult year for all of them, but dancing with Natalie in his arms at that moment had made it all worth it. And, in a rare moment of impulse, he kissed her, in front of the entire hospital. He didnât care who saw or what anyone thought; all he knew was he was madly in love with Natalie, and he would never let her go.
The vision faded and Ethan was brought back to the present. He gazed into Natalieâs blue-green eyes, and rested his forehead against hers.Â
âPenny for your thoughts?â she asked.
He nuzzled her nose. âJust thinking about how much I love you,â he answered.
She chuckled. âI love you more.â
He pecked her softly on the lips and smiled. âNever.â

Hold Me Close (Ethan x f!MC)
Book: Open Heart
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x Natalie Cusack
Word count: 656
Summary: When Ethan has a nightmare, only one person can calm him down.
Rating: T
Authorâs Note: So, Iâm reading a book series right now and the main characters of the second book are struggling with nightmares related to the events of the first book. Which got me thinking about Ethan and Nat and how they would handle such nightmares. This is the result. Please enjoy! đ
Ethan watched in horror as Natalieâs vitals began to plummet. He rushed to her side, doing everything he could think of to keep them steady, to keep her from crashing. He placed his hands on her chest, attempting to perform CPR. He had to keep her heart pumping, he had to keep her alive. She couldnât die. She couldnât leave him. No.
Sounds of yelling surrounded him and a pair of hands removed him from Natalieâs side as another doctor took over. Ethan grabbed Natâs hand and squeezed it tightly, silently hoping she would squeeze it back. That, in that small gesture, sheâd reassure him that she would be fine.
It didnât come.
Instead, Ethan watched, his body filling with dread more and more by the second, as the doctors failed to get Natâs vitals up or even steady them. He felt the breath leave his lungs as he saw the grim looks growing on the doctors and nurses faces. He felt her meek grip in hand slacken. And, with his heart shattering into pieces, the last thing he heard was the sound of the heart monitor flat liningâŚ
Ethan awoke with a jolt and sat up so fast in bed, he nearly made himself dizzy. His heart was pounding in his chest and his breathing was so frantic, he was nearly hyperventilating. It took a long moment to gather his surroundings, the shadows of his darkened bedroom slowly becoming clearer as his eyes adjusted.
He took a deep breath to try and steady his pounding heart when he felt the covers next to him shift and two gentle hands rested themselves on his arm and back. âEthan?â Natalie said, her voice soft and filled with concern.
He gripped the hand that touched his arm and placed his fingers on the pulse point in her wrist. Her pulse was strong and steady; the truest sign that she was here and safe and alive. He held her hand close to his chest, dropping his head. âSorry, Nat,â he whispered. âI didnât mean to wake you.â
Natalie scooted closer to him, moving her free hand to run soothing circles along his back. âBaby, whatâs wrong?â
Ethan shook his head. âI-- just a terrible, terrible dream.â He looked at her, finally, his eyes red with unshed tears. âI-- dreamed I lost you, Nat. And I couldnât⌠I couldnât save you.â
âEthanâŚâ Nat replied. She opened her arms wide to him. âCâmere.â
He leaned into her embrace, sighing in relief as he rested his head on her chest, the sound of her heartbeat like music to his ears. Nat wrapped her arms tightly around him and kissed the top of his head. âIâm right here, Ethan. Iâm not going anywhere. I promise.â
âI know,â he whispered. âIt just felt so real.â
âIt was just a dream, my love. A very bad dream.â
Ethan nodded in response. He wrapped a hand around her arm and squeezed lightly. âThank you,â he whispered.
âFor what?â
âFor being here when I woke up. For just being here, in general.â
âIâll always be here, Ethan. Always.â
He pulled away from her only to cup her face in his hands and kiss her softly. He rested his forehead against hers and closed his eyes. âI love you.â
âI love you more,â she replied.
The ghost of a smile appeared on his lips. âNever.â
Wrapping their arms tightly around each other, they laid back down into the bed and relaxed, sleep coming to them both.
âWake me if you have another nightmare, okay?â Natalie said.
Ethan nodded. âI will. I promise.â
She kissed his brow and placed her hand on his chest, right over his heart. âSleep, my love.â
He did as she said and closed his eyes, pulling Natalie closer to him. The two of them fell back asleep together, wrapped in each otherâs arms, into a deep, restful sleep. No nightmares disturbed him after that.

A Surprise Visit (Ethan x f!MC)
Book: Open Heart
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x Natalie Cusack
Special Appearances: The Ramsack Kids
Word count: 998
Summary: Ethan gets a surprise for Fatherâs Day.
Rating: T
Category: Fluff. Nothing but fluff.
Authorâs Note: So, I realize Fatherâs Day is not until Sunday but I will be out of town for a memorial and without wifi so Iâm posting this now. Happy early Fatherâs Day to all dads, step-dads, grandads, and father figures out there! You are appreciated and loved! đ

A few weeks later...
Ethan looked up from his paperwork at the sound of his phone ringing. Rolling out his neck, he picked up the receiver and clicked âAnswer.â
âHello?â
âHi Daddy!âÂ
Ethan grinned at the sound of his youngest daughterâs voice. âHi, baby.â
âHappy Fatherâs Day!â Lydia exclaimed.
âThank you, honey.â
âAre you doing anything fun?â
Ethan chuckled and shook his head. âNo. Your mother is taking me out to dinner, I think. But weâre keeping it low-key.â
âYouâve always been the party animal of the family,â Lydia joked. âIs Evie going with you to dinner?â
Ethan shrugged. âIâm not sure. Last I spoke to her, she said she was really busy with work so I donât know if sheâll be joining us.â
âMm,â Lydia replied. âWell, Iâm sorry I canât be there. But Iâm sending you lots of love vibes!â
âYour vibes are felt and appreciated,â Ethan said, smiling. âYou doing okay?â
âYeah, just busy. You know how it is.â
âI do,â he replied, nodding. âJust make sure you carve out some time for yourself, okay? Donât be like your old man and make work your whole life.â
âI wonât, I promise,â Lydia said. âI gotta go though. Iâll talk to you later, okay?â
âOkay, baby. Thank you for calling.â
âOf course! Love you! And give mom my love too!â
âWill do, honey. Love you.âÂ
Ethan hung up the phone and smiled. Fatherâs Day looked different now that all of his kids had grown and moved out. But his heart swelled every time they called and he heard their voices. There was a time he never thought he would be a husband, or a father. Now, he doesnât know what he would do without the little family he and Nat created.Â
There was a soft knock at the door and his wife popped her head through. âHey you,â she said.
âHey,â he replied, smiling. âLydia called. She sends her love.â
Natalie smiled and entered the room fully, walking up to his desk. âI send my love back.â She leaned across the desk and kissed Ethan softly. âHappy Fatherâs Day, my love.â
âThank you, love.â
âYou should get ready to go, babe. Dinnerâs in a little over an hour.â
Ethan nodded and stood from the desk. âLet me get cleaned up.â
He placed another soft kiss on Natâs lips before walking ahead of her to leave the room. Natalie smirked behind his back and slapped his rear end as he walked by, causing Ethan to jump. He turned around and raised an eyebrow at her, but she feigned ignorance.
âWhat?â She asked, her eyes wide but shining with mischief.
âSo thatâs how you want to play it, huh?â
âPlay whatâ oh shit!â She began to laugh as Ethan swooped down and picked Natalie up, throwing her over his shoulder! âEthan! Put me down!â
âOh, I will,â he replied, smirking. He walked them into the bedroom, Natalie laughing the entire way, before he dropped her onto the bed and he crawled over her, peppering her face with kisses.
âMm, Ethan,â Nat said, in between kisses. âBaby, weâre short on time.â
âThen Iâll be sure to be quick,â he murmured. Natalie didnât argue as his hands and lips began to explore her body.
---------------------------------
An hour later, Nat and Ethan walked through the doors of the restaurant, right on time for their reservation. Natalie gave their name to the maĂŽtre dâ and took Ethanâs hand in hers as they walked to their table.
As soon as their table was in their line of sight, Ethan stopped short, his jaw dropping. Sitting at their table, was all three of his children, chatting and laughing as they awaited their parentsâ arrival. Natalie looked at Ethan and gave him a smile. âHappy Fatherâs Day.â
Ethan looked at her in awe. âYou knew?â
âOf course I did,â she replied. âIt was Evieâs idea but I helped organize everything. And I picked up Lydia from the airport earlier in the week.â
Ethanâs eyes welled with tears and he blinked them back as he pulled Natalie in close, kissing her temple. âThank you, my love.â
Nat grinned up at him and bumped her hip with his. âWell, go on. Theyâre waiting for you.â
He wiped his eyes and made his way over the table, his smile widening into a grin as all three kids stood up and wrapped their father into a tight group hug. Ethan kissed the tops of all three of their heads and squeezed them tightly in his embrace. Natalie walked up to the group and joined the hug before they all split and sat back down at the table.
Dinner was a lively and happy affair, with conversation flowing easily. Ethan couldnât help but grin as he looked at his family, his heart swelling. Suddenly, a vision flashed before his eyes, and he was a younger man, no gray hairs or wrinkles in sight. Natalie, next to him, looking radiant, as always, and their three children sitting before them at the dining table, all young and boisterous, with cherubic cheeks and eyes full of wonder, the sound of their giggles filling his ears.
The vision passed just as quickly as it appeared, and Ethan was back in the present, at dinner with his three adult children and his wife, now with a few gray hairs and some laugh lines, but still breathtakingly beautiful. He reached over and took Natalieâs hand in his, rubbing his thumb along her wedding band.
She smiled at him. âYou okay?â She asked.
He leaned over and kissed her temple. âIâve never been better.â
Noah cleared his throat and raised his wine glass. âI propose a toast!â He gestures towards his father with his glass. âTo the best dad in the world. Happy Fatherâs Day!â
âHappy Fatherâs Day!â His family echoed, clinking their glasses together.Â
Ethan smiled. He knew heâd be wrong in the future, because something better always came along, but in this moment, he knew: he had never been happier.

Sentenced to Cuddles (Ethan x f!MC)
Book: Open Heart
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x Natalie Cusack
Word count: 474
Summary: Sheâs bossy, heâs grumpy. But they love to cuddle.
Rating: T
Category: Fluff. Nothing but fluff.
Authorâs Note: I havenât been in the best place emotionally lately, so I wrote some fluff to cheer myself up. I hope it brings you some joy too. đÂ
Inspired by this post.
Natalie closed her book and sighed, stretching out her neck. She glanced out to the balcony, noting that the rain had not yet let up. She pursed her lips and looked at the room around her, sighing quietly to herself.
She was bored. And a little lonely, if she was being honest. This weather was a little too melancholic for her liking and she wanted a pick-me-up. Fortunately, she had just the solution.
âEthan!â She called out.
âYes?â He replied from another room in the apartment.
âWhere are you?â
âIn the bedroom, love.â
Placing her book on the coffee table, she padded down the hall and into the bedroom where she found her boyfriend leaning back against some pillows on the bed, his square glasses sitting on his nose and a medical journal in his lap. She smiled at the sight before her. Then she cleared her throat.
âDr. Ramsey?â
Ethan looked up, raising an eyebrow? âYes, Dr. Cusack?â
She held up a hand towards him, making her hand look like a makeshift gun. âPut your hands up, youâre under arrest!â
Ethan snorted. âAgain? What did I do this time?â
Natalie stepped further into the room. âYou, sir, are just too damn adorable. Itâs a crime to be so cute.â
âWell, then youâll just have to arrest yourself as well,â he countered. âConsidering youâre the cutest person on the planet.â
Nat blushed. âDamn, that was smooth,â she muttered.Â
Ethan smirked.
She cleared her throat again, and pointed the finger gun at him. âFor your crime, you have been sentenced to one whole hour of cuddles. Brace yourself.â And without another word or warning, Natalie launched herself onto the bed, towards Ethanâs lying figure.
He had just enough time to move the medical journal aside before Nat landed and bounced on the bed beside him. He laughed as Nat looked up at him, her hair falling over her face and smiling. He moved the hair off of her face and returned her smile.
âHere to execute my sentence?â He teased.
âYep!â Nat replied. She rolled onto her back and opened her arms for him. Without wasting a moment, Ethan adjusted himself on the bed and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close into his embrace.Â
âBetter?â He asked.
Nat nodded and nuzzled her face into the crook of his neck. âMuch.â
He kissed her forehead. âGood.â They laid in silence for a moment before he spoke again. âYou know if you wanted to cuddle, you could have just come in here and done so. You didnât need to âarrestâ me. Again.â
âYeah, but whereâs the fun in that?â She teased. âBesides, donât pretend you donât like it when I get bossy.â
He smirked. âMm, true. I do like your bossy side.â
âTold you,â she replied, triumphant.
He kissed her softly. âLove you, bossy.â
âLove you too, grumpy.â

Blankets Over Barbed Wire (Ethan x f!MC)
Book: Open Heart
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x Natalie Cusack
Featured Characters: Louise Ramsey
Word count: 1512
Summary: Ethanâs demons come back to haunt him when Louise reappears out of the blue.
Rating: T
Category: Hurt/Comfort; Angst-ish
Authorâs Note: So, there I was, driving home and listening to my Spotify shuffle when Tolerate It came on. Suddenly, an angsty idea hit me and I had to get it down on paper. This is the end result! Hope you enjoy!
Ethanâs office phone rang with the familiar soft tone. Without looking away from his computer screen, Ethan picked up the receiver.Â
âChief Ramsey,â he answered.
âEthan?â
His fingers stilled on the keyboard and his breath caught in his throat. He wished it werenât the case, but heâd know that voice anywhere. He shut his eyes tight and forced himself to take a deep breath. Memories flashed behind his eyes and his heart tightened as the pain and sorrow washed back over him.Â
He fought the urge to hang up the receiver, took another deep breath, and spoke. âLouise?â
âHi Eytie.â
His hand clenched the receiver at the sound of his childhood nickname. âPlease donât call me that,â he told her. âIâd rather not hear it ever again.â
âO-of course,â Louise stuttered. âIt just slipped out. Sorry.â
âIs there a reason youâre calling?â He flinched at the harshness of his question and shook his head. âI-- I mean: are you okay?â
âMe? Oh yes, Iâm fine. I-- Iâm doing better.â
Ethanâs shoulders released the tiniest amount of tension. âThatâs⌠thatâs really good to hear, Louise. Iâm glad.â
âThank you. And, to answer your other question, yes, I do. I-- I wanted to see how you were doing.â
He raised his eyebrows. âIâm fine. Thank you.â
âThatâs good. And Natalie? How is she?â
His eyes began to narrow. Louise and Natalieâs interactions hadnât always been the best. Nat had done everything to be kind to Louise and look for the best in her; and yet, for reasons Ethan couldnât understand, Louise didnât like Nat. In fact, Louise barely ever spoke to her the few times the two interacted. So her asking about Nat now had him suspicious. âNatâs fine too,â he answered, shortly.
âHmm,â Louise replied.
He tensed. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âWhatâs what supposed to mean?â
âThe hmm. Youâve never been one to mince words, Louise. What arenât you saying?â
âNothing!â she replied, defensively.
âFine. Then, I guess this conversation is over.â Ethan moved to hang up the phone.
âWait!â Louise called.
Ethan resisted the urge to groan and put the phone back to his ear. âYes?â
âI suppose congratulations are in order.â
âFor what?â
âI hear Natalieâs pregnant.â
Ethan tightened his grip on the receiver. It was true, Nat was pregnant with their first child-- a boy. They had only recently announced it publicly, however. He knew word would travel fast, but he never imagined it would reach Louise so soon. Secretly, he hoped she would never know. âHow do you know that?â
âHeard it from an old friend of your fatherâs.â
Ethan ground his teeth. Of fucking course.
âAre you sure youâre ready?â he heard her ask.
âReady for what?â he said, a little harsher than intended.
âTo be a parent,â Louise continued. âItâs a difficult job.â
âHow would you know? Last I checked, you found the job so difficult you left.â
âIâve told you why I did--â
âThat doesnât change the years of trauma you inflicted on me, Louise!â Ethan spat. âYou donât get to sit there and ask me if Iâm ready to be a parent when you were never up for the job yourself!â
âI just want to make sure that you know what youâre getting yourself into. I say this because I care, Ethan.â
âBullshit! Youâve never cared about anyone but yourself. You didnât raise me, Louise, you left me. You donât get to sit up on whatever high horse you found and try to lecture me about being ready for parenthood when you gave up at the first sign of a struggle. How dare you!â
âThatâs exactly why Iâm asking!â she snapped back. âYour father did what he could but I realize that my leaving caused a lot of damage! I just want to make sure you wonât make the same mistakes I did.â
Ethan nearly threw the phone across the room. âThe same mistakes?! Are you really suggesting that I would abandon my wife and child at the first sign of trouble for a life on the streets, doing whatever drugs I could get my hands on?! Youâve got a lot of fucking nerve, Louise. I would never do what you did! And for you to even suggest that I would is insulting beyond belief.â
âEthan, I--â
âSave it. I donât want to hear another damn word out of your mouth. Do me a favor and donât ever contact me again. And stay away from Boston. Stay away from me, stay away from my wife, and absolutely stay away from my children. I donât want you anywhere near them or me. Do I make myself perfectly clear?â
âYes,â she replied, quietly.
âDonât contact me again.â And with that, he slammed the phone down on the dock, making his whole desk shake. He buried his face into his hands and took several unsteady breaths, trying to slow his pounding heart. He dug the heels of his palms into his eyes, fighting back the tears that wanted to spill.Â
Sheâs full of shit, donât listen to her, he told himself. She doesnât know what sheâs talking about.
Taking another unsteady breath, he reached for his phone and shot several quick text messages to Natalie. He needed her insight and wisdom right now. Hell, who was he kidding, he just needed her.
Several minutes later, Natalie walked into his office and shut the door behind her. âE?â she called.
âIâm over here,â he replied, from his perch on the couch in the corner.
Natalie quietly moved to that side of the room and sat next to him on the sofa. âBaby, whatâs wrong?â
He sighed, dropped his head in his hands, and told Natalie of his conversation with Louise. As he spoke, Natalie took one of his hands in hers and ran her thumb soothingly along his palm. When he finished his story, her grip tightened on his hand.
âThat bitch,â she spat. âOh, I could throttle her! What the fuck was she thinking?!â
Ethan shrugged. âI donât know that she was, Nat.â
âClearly.âÂ
Ethan stared at his wedding ring in silence for a long moment before speaking again. âWhat if sheâs right, Nat?â
âWhat if sheâs right about what?â
He looked at her, tears shining in his eyes. âWhat if Iâm not ready to be a father? What if I canât do this?â
âShh,â Natalie said, cupping his face in her hands, âdonât think like that. Youâre going to be an amazing father, Ethan. Donât you dare let Louise get into your head. Sheâs just projecting her own fears and failures onto you but thatâs not your responsibility; thatâs hers and hers alone.â She took his hand and placed it on her growing stomach. âThis child-- our child, Ethan is going to be so lucky to have a father like you. Because you care so much and you love so deeply. Your son is going to love you and cherish you from the moment he is born. Him and any other children we have are going to be so lucky to have an incredible father like you.â
âHow do you know that?â he asked, sniffling. âHow do you know Iâm not going to fail them?â
âBecause you are not your mother,â she said, firmly. âLouiseâs failings are not a reflection of you, my love. Just as any mistakes or failings of yours or mine will not reflect our children. Mistakes will be made, itâs a part of being human. But itâs how we handle them that will affect those around us.â
He sniffled again and Natalie wrapped an arm around his shoulder, holding him tightly. âAnd youâre forgetting one crucial thing, E.â
âWhatâs that?â
âYou wonât be doing this alone. Youâll have me by your side every step of the way. Now and always, my love. Whatever may come, whatever challenges parenthood and the future holds, weâll get through them together, just like we always have.â
He gave her a small smile and ran his hand up and down her belly. âI just want to do right by him,â he said, quietly.
âYou will. The fact that youâre worried about it at all, tells me that you will do right by him. And he will love you wholeheartedly; just as I do.â
They rested their foreheads together and Ethan took a deep breath, feeling his shoulders relax for the first time since his phone rang. Natalie ran a soothing hand up and down his back and he released a shuddering breath. âThank you,â he whispered.
âIâve got you, my love. Now and always. Donât let anything Louise says get to you. She doesnât know you; I do. And I know youâre going to be the best dad.â
âI hope so.â
âI know so.â
Ethan felt a small kick from Natalieâs stomach, almost as if the baby was agreeing with his mother. Ethan smiled and pulled Natalie close. âThank you,â he repeated.
âI love you,â she replied.
âI love you more,â he said, kissing her softly.
She smiled and kissed him again. âNever.â

Six-ish Sentence Sunday

From an untitled WIP:

Natalie stared at the name on the phone, her thumb hovering over the âDialâ button. It was late; she wasnât even sure heâd answer. But she wantedâ no, neededâ to hear his voice. She pressed âDial.â
The phone rang only once before the other line picked up.
âNat?â Ethanâs voice answered.
âHey,â she replied.
âAre you okay?â
She hesitated, unsure of what to say. She decided on: âYou answered.â
âYou called,â he replied, simply.
