Hi there! Do you have any posts describing your path to SI/MI? And/or how the scope/experience of this work has been for you? Thank you! Keep up the excellent work :)
Thank you for your kind words!
I went to school for medical illustration, I got my BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2014. During and shortly after college I had a couple medical illustration internships and I worked as a student/junior medical illustrator at the Cleveland FES Center. After I moved to Grand Rapids I got a job at the planetarium at the Grand Rapids Public Museum--which was admittedly a career detour, but I developed my skills as an artist and science communicator for five years there, which was hugely valuable in the long run even though that role wasn't strictly medical illustration. But I did maintain a handful of freelance medical illustration clients on the side that whole time, and began picking up more and more of them around 2018-2019, which eventually set me up for freelancing full time. When I decided that I wanted to work as a medical illustrator again, I spent about a year strengthening my portfolio and getting things in order to start a business, and eventually I felt like I was comfortable with the amount of work I had coming in that I was able to quit my planetarium job toward the end of 2019. I'm really proud of the somewhat "non-traditional" path that I took to get where I am.
Honestly the experience has been largely positive for me. I feel like I got lucky in a lot of unexpected ways, I realize not everyone has instant success when starting a business or being a freelancer or a full-time creative person. But it is difficult sometimes and I have been a little bit discouraged lately more often than usual--which I think is more indicative of the economy/the failures of capitalism/the state of the world at large rather than anything that I've been doing "wrong." Ultimately I really enjoy what I get to do for a living, and I hope I can continue to do it and to cultivate and grow and remain fulfilled and happy.
I talked a bit more about this and related topics here. :) Thank you for asking and following.

~ Welcome ~
Empress Trash (Drea Jay) is a multi versatile visual artist & nomad with her rottweiler Glitch. A lifelong artist, she earned her BFA in Painting, Drawing, and Animation/Design from the University of Iowa in 2014. Shortly after, she moved to the Bay Area which she assisted and worked alongside a multitude of local and international artists and shows including Ai Wei Wei's show on Alcatraz, being a member of the Firehouse Art Collective run by Tom Franco, and running her own underground shows from her house. She started in crypto art in 2021 and since has been exhibited internationally including Paris, Palm Springs, Miami Art Basel, NYC, LA, SXSW and Ted Talks Conference in Vancouver.
The Empress portion of her name represents her ongoing search for sovereignty and elevated autonomy since she left home and emancipated herself from her extremely physically, mentally, sexually and spiritually abusive Schizophrenic, addict mother at the age of 13, while Trash stands for her aesthetic and her roots as "trailer trash". Art for her is the only constant in a tumultuous life and a safe space to confront demons from a highly isolated, oppressive and chaotic upbringing while still appreciating the beauty in herself and the world.
As a process orientated artist, Empress embraces abstraction, surrealism, trash, glitch art, and AI. She utilizes radical expressionism and self-acceptance to further her journey of self discovery. She believes in peeling back the veneer of reality to allow for exploration of the subconscious meta connections between the emotional, physical, mental, sexual and spiritual realms.

Jennifer Packer was born in 1984 in Philadelphia. She received a BFA from the Tyler University School of Art at Temple University in 2007. She graduated with an MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale University in 2012. She then moved to the Bronx where she was the 2012-2013 Artist-in-Residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem. In 2014-2016 she was a Visual Arts Fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA. She is an Assistant Professor in the painting department at Rhode Island School of Design.
Packer paints in a loose line and brush stroke style using limited color palettes.  Her subjects often appear to merge with the background. Her subjects are typically portraits of friends and family members, and flower still lives. The still lives she describes as vessels of personal grief. Her intent in all her paintings is political statement. She describes them as being about loss usually in response to “tragedies of state and institutional violence against Black Americans. One such painting titled, Say Her Name, is a response to the death of Sandra Bland, a Black American woman who is thought to have been murdered in police custody.
Parker’s two main types of paintings, the still lives of flowers and portraits, are very different in composition, technique and style. What are your thoughts on that? Is there one you prefer over the other or one you feel sends a more impactful message?
Despite the subject of loss carried through Parker’s paintings, they are mostly painted in bright lively colors. What impact do you think this has on the paintings and their message?

NY / &&&2
Tumblr media
&&&2 January 6, 2024 – February 18, 2024  Opening Reception: Jan 6, Saturday 6-8PM  A talk with the artists will be scheduled in February
Tiger Strikes Asteroid New York is pleased to present &&&2, a bi-coastal exhibition that serves as both a survey and sequel to the collaborations of Ethan Greenbaum, David Kennedy Cutler and Sara Greenberger Rafferty.
Ten years ago, the artists initiated a series of meetings to talk about materials and techniques, based on their mutual interest in using photographic imagery to destabilize traditional art categories like painting, printmaking and sculpture.
The meetings resulted in an artist’s book titled &&&, in which the three artists imagined themselves as a fictional industrial supply firm. For Greenberger & Greenbaum & Cutler &, the fictional company had a veneer of prestige. For these capitalist outsiders, a corporate symbol of joint commercial enterprise was almost tantamount to success.
The book was released at Printed Matter’s NY Art Book Fair in 2013 in both a mass market paperback and a boxed, limited special edition print series based on swatch sample catalogs. The intention of the project was lost on nearly everyone, but a few key people became aware of the artists’ positioning themselves as a small movement.  This included the photography curator Dan Leers, who organized a show and catalog of their work, Beyond The Surface: Image as Object, at the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center in 2014.
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of &&&, Sun You has invited Greenberger & Greenbaum & Cutler to mount an exhibition at TSA in Brooklyn, NY. There will also be a simultaneous version of the show at Ditch Projects in Springfield, OR.  The exhibitions at both artist-run spaces feature a backdrop that wraps the gallery with deconstructed pages from the original &&& book, over which the artists have installed works from 2013 and 2023.  The original book is also exhibited, as well as a new portfolio of prints (&&&2) to celebrate ten fruitful years of collaboration, hand wringing and friendship
Ethan Greenbaum is a New York based artist. Selected exhibition venues include KANSAS, New York; Derek Eller Gallery, New York; Hauser and Wirth, New York; Marlborough Chelsea, New York, Higher Pictures, New York; New York; Marianne Boesky, New York, Circus Gallery, Los Angeles; Steve Turner, Los Angeles; The Suburban, Chicago; Michael Jon & Alan, Miami, The Aldrich Museum, Connecticut; Socrates Sculpture Park; Long Island City and Stems Gallery, Brussels. Recent projects include a solo presentation with Lyles & King and solo exhibitions at Galerie Pact, Paris and Super Dakota, Brussels.
His work has been discussed in The New York Times, Modern Painters, Artforum, BOMB Magazine, ArtReview and Interview Magazine, among others. Ethan is a co-founder and editor of thehighlights.org and his writings have appeared in the Brooklyn Rail, Wax Magazine, BOMB, Paper Monument and others. He has also curated and co-curated multiple exhibitions at venues including The Suburban, Chicago; Lyles & King, New York and Super Dakota, Brussels. Greenbaum is the recipient of the Queens Art Fund New Work Grant, the Silver Art Residency, The Keyholder Residency at the Lower East Side Printshop, Dieu Donne’s Workspace Residency, LMCC’s Workspace Program, The Robert Blackburn SIP Fellowship, The Socrates EAF Fellowship, The Edward Albee Foundation Residency and The Barry Schactman Painting Prize. He received an MFA in Painting from Yale School of Art.
David Kennedy Cutler is an artist, writer and performer who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Cutler received his BFA from The Rhode Island School of Design in 2001. He has had solo exhibitions at Derek Eller Gallery, New York; Halsey McKay Gallery, East Hampton; Essex Flowers, New York; The Centre for Contemporary Art, Tallinn, Estonia and Nice & Fit, Berlin, Germany. Cutler has performed in various spaces in New York including Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery, Essex Flowers, Printed Matter, Halsey McKay, Derek Eller Gallery, and Flag Art Foundation, and internationally at the Center for Contemporary Arts Estonia, among others. His works are included in the permanent collections of the Wellin Museum at Hamilton College and The RISD Museum, and his artist’s books are included in the libraries of the Whitney Museum and the Brooklyn Museum. He has been reviewed and featured in The New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, The New Yorker and Modern Painter, among others. Cutler is represented by Derek Eller Gallery, NY and Halsey McKay Gallery, East Hampton.
Sara Greenberger Rafferty produces image-based works in paper, plastic, glass, metal, fabric, and video. Her work is driven by an ongoing examination of contemporary and mid-20th century visual culture and considers the ever-changing implications for photographic images in the digital era. She’s also into comedy.
Ditch Projects is a nonprofit artist-founded, artist-run studio, exhibition, and performance space providing contemporary art experiences in Springfield, Oregon. As a collective of artists and professionals committed to exhibiting experimental artists from diverse backgrounds, Ditch Projects provides opportunities for cultural exchange between experimental contemporary art and our local community, acting as an integral voice within contemporary art discourse in the Pacific Northwest. Since its founding in 2008, Ditch Projects has featured over 145 exhibitions and 275 artists. Growing organically out of the concerns of its artist members, Ditch provides contemporary visual arts practitioners with an opportunity to test out new ideas, processes, and approaches they might not otherwise attempt in a comparable urban center. Over the past decade, the primary focus of the artist collective has been on the production and presentation of new works by regional, national and international artists, with a consistent 10-12 solo, two-person or group exhibitions per season. Past exhibiting artists have included internationally renowned practitioners such as Amy Yao, Diana Thater, Scott Reeder, Laura Owens, Jessica Jackson Hutchinsons, and Vito Acconci, along with regionally acclaimed artists such as Ralph Pugay, Amy Bernstein, Lisa Radon, Tannaz Farsi, James Lavadour, and Kristen Kennedy. Exhibitions at Ditch Projects have been reviewed in Art Forum, Frieze, Art in America, and the New York Times. Ditch Projects has received grants from the Andy Warhol Foundation, The Miller Foundation, the Ford Family Foundation, the Oregon Arts Commision, the Oregon Cultural Trust, Oregon Community Foundation, and the WLS Spencer Foundation.

Devan Shimoyama was born in 1989 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and graduated from Penn State University in 2011 with a BFA in Drawing/Painting. He received his MFA from Yale University School of Art in Painting/Printmaking in 2014. While there, in 2013, he was awarded the Al Held Fellowship.
"Shimoyama creates two distinct worlds—one an enchanted paradise, the other a queer imagining of the African American barbershop. Celebrated for fraternity and community, Shimoyama presents the barbershop as a space where young men and boys can feel shamed and vulnerable. In sculpture, he creates objects of mourning for Trayvon Martin and Tamir Rice, both examples of the aggressive targeting of African American youth as fearful or threatening. While canvases feel joyful and celebratory, they also present commentary on pain and sorrow. Teardrops lurk in the background of his landscapes or stream down the faces of his figures as a reminder of the racial injustices at work in contemporary society. Shimoyama presents a world where race, sexuality, and identity can operate from a point of freedom generated by inner strength." The Andy Warhol Museum.

I just wanna know how it goes in the artistic industries from those who work in it, you can just answer 10 of them.
In the position you now hold, what do you do on a typical day?
What are the most interesting and rewarding aspects of your job?
What part of your work do you consider dull or repetitious?
What percentage of your time must you devote to this activity?
How long does it usually take to move from one step to the next along this career path?
What was your path to this career?
What is your next career goal?
What is the top job you can have in this career?
What are the basic prerequisites for jobs in this field?
Are there any specific courses a student might take that would be particularly beneficial in this field?
What entry level jobs qualify one for this field?
Do larger companies provide any training to up and coming new employees?
What are the salary ranges for various levels in this field? (Some fields, for example, have high starting salaries but level off early in the career path; others may start lower but have much higher top-level salaries).
What advice had you wished you had received when you were entering the field?
What special advice would you give to a young person entering this field?
What special advice would you give to a "career change" person wanting to enter this field?
Is there a demand for people in this field?
Do you view this field as a growing one? What are the major changes in this field which you expect to occur over the next few years?
How would you describe the culture of this work and work community (collaborative, team-building, solitary, competitive, supportive, inclusive, exclusive, etc.)?
You can pick and choose which to answer in a way that describes your work and experience in the artistic industries.
In the position you now hold, what do you do on a typical day?
My primary "position" underneath the vast umbrella of my professional life is that of a self-employed medical illustrator. I'm supporting around 4 or 5 different client projects at any given time, and usually about 80% of the work I'm doing is medical or scientific illustration/design and the other 20% is other creative work (logo design, commissioned illustrations, etc.). There's not really a "typical" day since my work is so varied, but I tend to spend the first hour or so of my day taking care of miscellaneous tasks like responding to emails, scheduling social media posts, administrative tasks, then I work on client projects until I break for lunch. After lunch I do more client work, and sometimes there are meetings sprinkled in here and there. Since I work from home, I take brain breaks by doing chores or going for walks. If it's a slow day, I work on personal projects or spend more time on miscellaneous tasks. I keep a pretty standard 9ish-5ish schedule since that's when my clients are active should I have any questions for them, and it sets expectations for my own "office hours" as well so people know when they can reach me. I also try to structure my weeks so that I get all of my high-priority client work done early and can spend Friday at my studio space working on personal projects or prepping for art markets.
-----
What are the most interesting and rewarding aspects of your job?
I get to learn about whatever my clients are working on. Some medical illustrators have subject matter specialties, but since I don't I will work for basically anybody in any sector. In the process, I have to become a temporary expert on the project of the moment, which means I get to delve into really interesting research papers and cool science.
-----
What was your path to this career?
I got my BFA in Biomedical Art from the Cleveland Institute of Art. During and shortly after college, I had some medical illustration internships and part-time jobs, but after I moved to Grand Rapids in 2014 I actually took a career detour for five years while I worked at a planetarium (still science, still education-based creativity and communication, just a slightly different flavor). I began picking up some medical illustration clients here and there and subcontracting for a friend who was working as a medical illustrator, and eventually I felt like that was what I wanted to be doing instead. I spent about a year working toward that goal and was able to quit my planetarium job in 2019, started my business, and began freelancing full-time.
-----
What is your next career goal?
I'm currently working toward Board Certification so that I can put some letters after my name. Fingers crossed that I'll be able to take the written exam next year!
-----
What are the basic prerequisites for jobs in this field?
The very basics are artistic skill and knowledge of anatomy, but it is a bit more complicated than that. Medical illustration is a specialized field, and it helps to have some specific training or a mentor who can guide you.
-----
What are the salary ranges for various levels in this field? (Some fields, for example, have high starting salaries but level off early in the career path; others may start lower but have much higher top-level salaries).
From the Association of Medical Illustrators website: The median salary for a medical illustrator / animator in the U.S. is $70,650 and can range up to $173,000 (based on 2018 AMI survey data).
-----
What advice had you wished you had received when you were entering the field?
I think in general I wish I had been more aware of the range of work that medical illustrators do. "Medical illustrator" is a broad term that encompasses a diverse skillset, it's not just creating beautiful drawings of organs and bones (though it is that, sometimes). I also wish I had better understood the fluidity of careers, generally speaking. When I decided that I wanted to leave my planetarium job, it felt like the end of the world and a loss of identity, and in retrospect I could have had a more optimistic and open-minded approach to what I wanted to do next. Unless you're self-employed (and even if you are, frankly), I strongly advise against making your job your personality, because it's very confusing for awhile once that job goes away.
-----
Is there a demand for people in this field?
In general, yes. As long as people are doing science, there will be a need for somebody to visually communicate it. As somebody who does not wish to be gainfully employed, I don't know what the job market is like for medical illustrators right now, but personally my flow of clients has been constant and steady for the past four years.
-----
Do you view this field as a growing one? What are the major changes in this field which you expect to occur over the next few years?
I think thanks to the internet people are becoming more aware of medical illustration as a career path (although the realization of "Oh, I didn't know it was somebody's job to draw my textbooks!" is a tale as old as time) and therefore considering it as a career path or a career change. Recently I've observed what seems like a lot of people in medical and scientific fields realizing that their creativity and artistic skill could have been put to use in a practical way and leaving their jobs for pursuits in medical illustration or science communication. Maybe this has been going on forever and I'm just noticing it more in the last year or two, who knows!
Changes that are already happening and that I hope continue to happen are the efforts made by medical illustrators to diversify their work and include body types and skin tones that historically have not been represented in anatomy textbooks.
-----
How would you describe the culture of this work and work community (collaborative, team-building, solitary, competitive, supportive, inclusive, exclusive, etc.)?
Undoubtedly there are pockets of the industry that are toxic and workplaces that are unsupportive, but I've personally found myself among a great online community of medical illustrators. In particular, there are a handful of fellow freelancers for whom I subcontract on occasion, or we'll refer our clients to each other when things get too busy. I don't believe in hoarding information or techniques and I'm always willing to help somebody out if they're stuck on an problem, or need a critique, or want to exchange tips and tricks. And I get to see many of these lovely people once a year at the AMI conference! Opportunities come to those who form positive professional relationships.

Above are paintings by MJ Torrecampo for the 2023 Florida Prize in Contemporary Art at Orlando Museum of Art.
You can see the art history references throughout MJ Torrecampo’s work in this exhibition. The different perspectives she uses create a unique way to tell stories within each canvas.
The museum’s information on the artist and her work-
Born in the Philippines, MJ Torrecampo immigrated to the United States with her family when she was nine. Eventually the family settled in Orlando, and Torrecampo attended the University of Central Florida with the goal of earning a degree in mechanical engineering. An elective class in art history sparked her interest, and in time she changed her academic direction to earn a BFA in painting in 2014. This was followed by an MFA from the New York Academy of Art in 2020. Having returned to Central Florida, Torrecampo is currently an artist in residence at the Art & History Museums Maitland. Her recent paintings are complex narratives that examine the storyline of her life and of her extended family as immigrants negotiating their past, present, and future while they establish themselves in a new homeland. Although the subjects of her paintings are people, places, and events, it is her exploration of social relationships, psychological insights, and cultural adjustments that provide depth.
The paintings presented here are a new series completed for the Florida Prize exhibition. In these works, Torrecampo investigates her conflicted relationship with religion and spirituality, reimagining familiar biblical stories in the setting and context of the contemporary world. Specifically, she has chosen a series of moments in the life of Mary and the birth of Christ. Without being didactic, paintings like Annunciation ask the viewer to consider the volition and agency of Mary as she undertakes the profound responsibility of giving birth to Christ. In the central panel Mary is preoccupied watering her house plants. Out of the corner of her eye she notices the Angel Gabriel letting himself in, apparently uninvited. The painting’s left panel depicts children squirming in their seats at church during communion. The right panel shows a group of anti-abortion protesters blocking access to a women’s health clinic.
A distinctive feature of Torrecampo’s paintings is her use of overhead perspective which provides a God’s eye view of all that is going on. She adopted this device when she decided to work from her imagination and began to visualize scenes from this viewpoint. With roofs off, we see what is happening in multiple rooms at once, and the architectural geometry of walls in homes and apartments becomes a means to move through each narrative event. People gather here and there, sometimes in separate places and sometimes flowing from one space to the next. It is not always obvious whether the events we are looking at are simultaneous or sequential.
Torrecampo’s unusual perspective and architectural structures reflect her inventive interpretations of devices used by painters of the early Renaissance. References abound in this group of works that explicitly address this artistic period and related Christian theology. A look at Torrecampo’s Annunciation and the same subject by Fra Angelico reveals many wonderful comparisons. The Renaissance master’s painting is set in a loggia, an open walled or “transparent” room through which the viewer sees multiple spaces inside and out. The architecture of the room is defined by a dramatic perspective which encloses the two figures. Mary sits modestly on a stool and seems apprehensive about the approaching angel. Both paintings imply there are truths within the story that go beyond the text.

DIANA BAUMBACH
BIO. Originally from Oak Park, IL (USA), Diana Baumbach earned her BFA from Washington University in St. Louis (2003) and her MFA from Southern Illinois University Carbondale (2007). She has had recent solo exhibitions at the University of South Carolina, Colorado State University, Arte Mare (Finland) and Naropa University. Diana has undertaken public art projects in the US and the Netherlands, mainly geared towards young audiences. She received two Visual Art Fellowships from the Wyoming Arts Council (2015, 2021) after receiving Honorable Mention three times (2011, 2013 and 2014). She recently spent a year in Finland where she was an artist in residence at Stundars Museum and Novia University. Diana was formerly an Associate Professor and Foundations Coordinator at the University of Wyoming and is currently an Assistant Professor and Director of Galleries at the University of Maine.
