Arguably, the best part of Superman for me was how direct it was in what they were trying to say, especially right now.
It is more than just "good vs. evil", there is literally *zero* defense for the evil. The main villain is the CEO of a weapons company operating privately with multiple governments, and his entire rationale for doing what he does is because he's so insanely xenophobic that he'd rather see the world burn than see Superman simply exist. The country he's funding is literally invading another country under the guise of "saving them" where in reality, the president explicitly says he wants them all dead. And the US is allied with them for no other reason in that they help line their pockets. God, how I've missed villains like that, especially ones who reflect the ones we see in real life.
And on the good side of things, Superman simply wants people to live freely and happily, including himself. That's it. There's no "secret fucked up moral" that he has, nor is there a "secret good side" to Lex. It's just "here is a good person, and here is a bad person", and it has still managed to immensely piss a certain group of people off.
Overall, I think this film's message succeeds and does it well. And it just feels even more worthwhile when the main character is quite literally an "immigrant alien" himself. I really hope James Gunn gets to lead more superhero projects in the future, because I've been enjoying all of them so much.
But yeah. Go watch this film. Nicholas Hoult the actor that you are.

Guys please please pleas from the very bottom of my heart, I don't think I ask for much, but I BEG of you: if you can, GO AND SEE ELIO IN CINEMAS RIGHT NOW!! (there's no specific spoilers ahead)
Maybe I've just been starved of original animated content for so long, but this movie was so precious and adorable? Like, I genuinely didn't except to find this so cute and heart warming, if you grew up as an autistic child or even as a child who generally had issues fitting in with your peer group, this movie is for you.
I was surprised at how much through out this movie I found myself clutching my chest from how adorable it is, it's silly, it's creative, it's fun, it's fucking ORIGINAL - GO AND SEE IT
AND LORD GRIGON???
Excuse my language ladies and gentlemen, but WOOF~

Never have I thought in my lifetime would I see the day the beloved animated tradition would return to us, but my god, it's back for one more round.
Pixar is doing the animated bloopers again.
At least for their upcoming film, Elio. It apparently has some of them attached to the ending credits, and they revealed some of them just earlier today.

i just watched Elio in theatres, its SOO cute. really enjoyed it!!
i loved how real it was (outside of all the alien stuff obv). the references to Voyager 1 and the golden record grounded the story in reality from the start and really immersed me into Elio's motivations and adoration for space. plus it was BEAUTIFUL. this whole movie was wonderful on the eyes and all the characters were so charming.
!!!spoiler warning!!!
the big climactic moment of Elio and Olga are hurtling through that debris field is so unconventional, in my opinion. it's such a realistic moment, of random debris and rocket ship junk caught in the atmosphere crashing into the ship. its an almost mundane scenario for typical movies. There's no big fight, no wormhole about to collapse, no fantastical element to it at all (besides the space ship) and i LOVE that. for me, its so much more immersive and emotional when efforts are made to be realistic and it helps you understand how complex the logistics of space travel is. and the scene plays out beautifully, its so tense, with a moment of hopelessness where Elio and his aunt just hug and it goes quiet. then, slowly, calls begin to flood in from scientists across the world united by their desire to help this little boy and young woman survive. it's so touching.
and i cant talk about touching moments without talking about the scene with Glordon and his father. the whole theatre i was in aww-ed when Gringon, emerged from his carapace, swaddled his son and desperately rocked him, the intimacy of the scene heightened by his vulnerable, squishy form. i gotta admit, i cried (i'm sappy SUE ME) but it was suchhh a sweet moment. i loved Gringon's character so much. yes, hes a brute and bloodthirsty but even from the start, he was such a loving father. he got so offended when Elio even slightly devalued his fatherhood. and the parallels between him and Olga were <3
overall, a very fun movie! loved that jameela jamil was in it. loved how weird Elio was. the scene of him and Glordon basically having a night out was hilarious. loved all the space stuff as well as all the Earth stuff. would recommend!

On some level I feel silly for being so devastated by Ice Adolescence’s cancellation, what with the world a literal dumpster fire. But Yuri on Ice meant so much to so many. Representation. Beauty. Escape. Overcoming our image of ourselves. Love in its multiple forms.
And I think my partner said it best after watching YOI for the first time-
“I wish the world were more like that.”
#summerises my thoughts exactly#i love slice of life anime for how it easily nestles deep inside my heart and makes me feel GOOD#and theres no better example than yuri on ice. its such an incredibly charming and endearing show#we need more joy and beauty in the world#and these gay figure skaters give me so much#yuri on ice
