Thank you for taking part and taking the time to learn @girl_run_the_shire 💕 #Repost @girl_run_the_shire • • • • • • Worcester, Worcestershire This morning on my run I paused my watch at 2.22 miles to join my friends over at @blackgirlsdorunuk to think about Windrush. Ashamed to say up until recently I didn’t know much about what happened, because it didn’t affect me - this is my privilege. I am now trying to do better and to learn. If you weren’t aware, today marks 72 years since the ship Empire Windrush’ brought one of the first large groups of Caribbean people to the UK in 1948, and as, at the time, the Caribbean was part of the commonwealth those people were automatically British subjects and free to permanently live and work in the UK. In 2017 after it emerged that hundreds of Commonwealth citizens, many of whom were from the ‘Windrush’ generation, had been wrongly detained, deported and denied legal rights. Years later many are still fighting for justice. I’m not an expert on this subject at all and I’m only just learning about how deeply flawed and discriminatory so many of our systems are, especially the immigration system - I urge you to keep learning. .
