The Taming of the Songwriter

Olivia Rodrigo does it again with her sophmore album GUTS, mimicking the pop-grunge sound of the '90s and early '00s while detailing about the woes of being a young woman in the 2020s.

Although the album's audio impressed me, to no surprised, I was at first disappointed by its visuals and marketing. To me, SOUR, Rodrigo's 2021 debut didn't feel that far ago. Its soft purple pop-grunge aesthetic is still present in my memories. When the album art and marketing for GUTS was released, I was shocked to find it so similar to it's predecessor, expecting for Olivia to be entering a new "era". But then I listened to the album.

Rodrigo's maturity is evident in her song writing, but the story-telling, romanticism, and production of SOUR is present. It was after giving the record a listen-through that I realized GUTS is not a follow-up album, but more of a sister-album. An older sister album. And in the spirit of it's '90s/'00s vibe, specifically the sisters from 10 Things I Hate About You (1999): Kat and Bianca Stratford (as played by Julia Stiles and Larisa Oleynik).

Bianca is SOUR. She's youthful, naive, and romantic. Bianca Stratford is a sweet, innocent, beautiful high schooler. The "girl next door" starting her journey of love. The unoffical anthem of 2021 - Driver's License - presents a wholly teenage outlook on love. It's sweet in that many of us have or will experience the feeling of gaining that freedom to take yourself wherever you want to go. And that place could the house of your first love. The album chronicles a relationship between two young people. The innocence and passion and heartbreak that made many adults feel like a teenager again. It has more soft songs and ballads and therefore in the world of Olivia's music, is more romantic. One critique of the album is that all the songs are the same, as just one stands apart from the rest in terms of subject matter ("brutal"). This is where the album differs from her older sister.

Kat is GUTS. She's edgy, jaded, and cynical. Kat Stratford is unapoligetically outspoken. A high school feminist on her jouney of disrupting the system, but that doesn't mean she can't fall in love. GUTS is a mixed bag of experiences young women know all too well. In this album, Rodrigo includes less ballads, the ones that are present reflect on poor relationships ("logical," "teenage dream," "the grudge"). But it's more than just a recounting of her past relationships. GUTS is feminism, and maybe a little queer. "all-american bitch," "lacy," "pretty isn't pretty," all touch on subject matter regarding beauty standards and the expectations forced onto young women by the patriarchy. "bad idea right?" "ballad of a homeschooled girl," and "get him back" are upbeat, tongue-in-cheek, and range in topics. Rodrigo still gives us the bitter love songs that she's known for, but this time around, she has a lot more to say.

And come on, can't you just imagine Kat laying in bed listening to "love is embarassing" one minute and the next screaming the lyrics into a mirror?

( nicole maines, trans female, she/her, pansexual ) check it out, i totally just saw BIANCA STRATFORD! some people say they remind them of BIANCA STRATFORD (10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU), but that’s just hearsay. it could be because they are BEAUTIFUL but can also be a bit VAIN on a bad day. either way i heard the TWENTY year old is studying DIGITAL MARKETING. if only they could stop playing MATERIAL GIRL ( MADONNA ) on repeat so they could actually focus, then their neighbors in WEST WOOD might get some sleep. all i know is that they remind me of PEARL NECKLACES, PRADA BACKPACKS, SKETCHERS, SUN DRESSES, OLD CORSAGE FLOWERS and can be seen as THE SPOILED.

born the youngest child to a pair of doting and protective parents, bianca stratford never had a care in the world. the opposite of her older sister, kat, biance was an outgoing, cheerful and bubbly person with expensive taste for the finer things in life. she grew up idolizing her sophisticated mother, who always looked picture perfect and put together without a hair out of place, yet still able to treat everyone with absolute kindness and respect. bianca did everything in her power to emulate her mother up until the day she died. many things changed that day. walter became an incredibly over protective parent, kat and bianca started fighting more and more and bianca’s priorities started to skew for the materialistic and popularity. everyone knew that the stratford sisters were more different than oil and water, and no one dared get in the middle of a spat between bianca and kat.

the family drifted more and more apart as the girls entered high school. while bianca strived to become one of the popular girls, her efforts were seriously derailed by her own father who mandated that she was not allowed to date until her sister did. but considering what her unsentimental sister thought of romance, bianca resigned herself to a lot of waiting around. that being said, bianca hardly had a lack of admirers. one in particular stood out, cameron james, who fought tooth and nail to find someone for her tempestuous older sister and eventually became bianca’s first ever boyfriend. things really changed for bianca when cameron came to town, a boy who challenged her to look beyond what met the eye and learn to appreciate what was on the inside. kat and bianca even became close again during the spring semester of bianca’s sophomore year, although the girl’s still had their differences.

of course, high school came and went and bianca left her little life in seattle for the glory that is los angeles. her father insisted she go to college, of course, and now bianca is in her final semesters at ucla where she is studying digital media marketing. she was thrilled when she was accepted to delta nu sorority, fitting in immediately with the other girls, got the greatest grand big in the form of elle woods and starting coming into her own out in california. perhaps that was always where bianca stratford was meant to be. now she’s even starting to think about the next step: working after graduation. bianca has gained a small social media following due to her beauty, liable personality and cultivated presence online, but it’s hardly enough to make a living on. while she’s exploring her options, bianca is excited to spend her last few semesters at college having fun with her friends and getting ready to take on the world.
