MAKILALA North Cotabato--Disaster response officials here are set to create a joint task force (JTF) to assess the New Bulatukan River's condition after it overflowed and submerged five villages here. Apart from homes inundated by flash floods, some PHP3.1-million worth of crops were also damaged by heavy rains wrought by Typhoons Ofel and Quinta in the recent days. At least 130 farmers from New Bulatukan, Kisante, Biangan, New Israel, and Rodero villages were affected by the extreme weather condition, the municipal disaster risk reduction and management office (MDRRMO) said. A combined total of 213 families from Kisante and New Bulatukan are also currently housed in their respective barangay gymnasiums after evacuating due to the floods. “Damage to properties and infrastructure projects are yet to be fully assessed,” said Sonny Fontanilla, MDRRMO chief, in an interview on Tuesday. Fontanilla is also leading the proposed creation of JTF Bulatukan River through a partnership between the local government unit (LGU), Provincial DRRMO, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources, the police, and the military. “I will officially propose this to the local chief executive on the upcoming forum to be held this coming Friday (Oct. 30),” Fontanilla said, adding the task force intends to conduct an on-site inspection of the Bulatukan River channels to assess possible occurrence of flash floods in the future and avoid loss of lives and properties. Based on the initial assessment, the mud and uprooted trees washed down by the floods were due to the series of earthquakes that hit the town in October 2019. “Team of experts from the Department of Natural Resources and PHIVOLCS described the instance as ‘nature clearing,’” Fontanilla said. Meanwhile, the Makilala LGU has extended assistance to the family of 33-year-old farmer Edzel Gudmalen from Barangay Kisante, who drowned after being swept away by the flash flood. The floods also destroyed nine houses, a water system, and a bridge connecting the village of New Bulatukan to adjacent Barangay Rodero. “The Department of Public Works and Highways and the provincial government are already working together in dredging Bulatukan River,” Fontanilla said. Eight species belonging to Muridae and Viverridae family were documented and collected in the three sampling sites: Polomolok, South Cotabato; Upper Biangan, Malungon, Sarangani Province and; K’laja, Conel, General Santos City. Philippines contain unique small non-volant fauna, which can be seen in greater Mindanao, the second largest island of the country, that has not yet been studied that much and still lacks information predominantly on areas like South Cotabato, Sarangani and General Santos City. This study was conducted to determine the different species found in three sampling sites on agricultural landscapes in selected areas of SOCCSKSARGEN. Sampling was done on October – December of 2015 using baited Sherman trap cages that were set through the three sampling sites. Species Rattus everetti was the dominant and most abundant group along the three sites. Species diversity is low as well as endemism; furthermore, there is observed much significant difference in species evenness and species richness. However, the study provides vital information about the current diversity of small non-volant mammals residing on certain parts of SOCCSKSARGEN region.
