it was the first time your boyfriend called you that day.

apparently he had been busying his hands with something, you weren’t sure what it was though.

whenever you would ask or try to sneak in a peak, he would always shoo you away with a lame excuse of it being a “secret” and “you’ll find out”.

now that you entered your shared living room, his back was still facing you.

when he craned his neck to look back at you, that golden smile of his was the first thing that you notice.

it felt like he was glowing with excitement. whatever it is he’s doing, he must be very eager to show you.

he pats the floor behind him, his body still facing away from you and you can tell that there was something being kept hidden within his other arm.

but you do as you were told.

“close your eyes.”

you follow.

“hold out your hand and spread it.”

you almost complain, why is it all of a sudden he has some specific instructions.

but you do.

and for a while you don’t feel anything. you hear him shuffling though, probably to face you.

“don’t sneak a glance!”

you don’t plan to. honestly you would spoil the excitement for both of you if you did, so you let him do what he intends on doing.

and after a few seconds, you feel something slipping around your finger.

your ring finger.

“okay..! open.”

you look down at your hands, a delicately folded paper ring enveloping your ring finger.

he has one too. you both share the same color of paper rings, because he wants to match. it was your favorite color. probably because he loves whatever you love.

“do you like it?”

his giggle feels infectious. you fear simple things that he does so genuinely because you feel so weak and vulnerable.

so dainty.

you almost feel tears pooling in the corner of your eyes, “i love it. i love you.”

“aah, did my surprise really bring you to tears?”

when the drop of tear finally gave in and fell down, he lays your head on his chest, hugging you while grabbing ahold of your hand which held the ring.

“if you cry over something like this… i wonder what’ll happen once i actually buy you a real ring.”

he laughs, caressing your hand as your muffled sobs was heard. you feel his hand fondling with the folded paper around your finger while he wonders how much different it’ll feel with a real engagement ring.

but you don’t care, because simple things he do is always so unbelievable innocent and genuine.

you don’t care if he marries you with a ring worth hundreds or thousands, or if he marries you right there and now with some cheaply folded paper that could be broken with a simple rip.

you don’t care if it’s in some fancy, luxurious five-star hotel, or just an apartment complex in a city.

you don’t care, because the moment he slips on the paper ring on both your fingers was the moment you two got married.
