One of my all time favorite animals: the Caracal. Fun story... I went to college for animation. When I finally got to character development class we were given an assignment to create an animal character and a model sheet along with it. I chose the Caracal. His name was "Cal". Snow leopards are well suited to the snowy plains of their Himalayan kingdom. Their remarkably wide feet act as snowshoes to distribute their weight evenly and keep the cat from sinking too deep. As ambush hunters, they like to sneak up and attack from above, sending their prey on a wild chase down the mountain side. A snow leopard is capable of leaping anywhere from 20-50 feet and their tail helps them maintain their balance if they land on an uneven spot. Cheetahs are just as unique as they are beautiful. These cats can run up to speeds of 61 miles per hour without breaking a sweat, and they are the only large cats that do not roar. Instead they communicate with a whole repertoire of barks, chirps, and purrs. When greeting familiar cheetahs, these cats aren't that different from domesticated cats in the manner in which they greet each other: by licking, sniffing, and rubbing cheeks. Our partners at Cheetah Conservation Botswana work closely with local communities in Botswana (one of the last remaining stronghold for cheetahs) to improve community perceptions towards these fast disappearing cats.
