Devitt, DocBike And BikeSafe Join Forces On Life-saving Resource For Motorcyclists

Motorcycle industry insurance specialist, Devitt, has joined forces with two of the UK’s leading motorcycle safety initiatives, DocBike and BikeSafe, with the shared objective of saving the lives of bikers. The three organisations have combined their collective knowledge and expertise on the causes of motorcycle accidents to produce a 14-page, pocket-sized booklet entitled Why Motorcyclists Crash and How to Prevent it Happening to You. On average, six motorcyclists are killed or seriously injured every week in the UK. The new booklet is designed to help motorcyclists understand why those crashes happen, so they can take the preventative measures required to avoid them. It clearly outlines the six most common causes of motorcycle accidents, as observed by the people who attend crashes and save bikers’ lives. The practical diagrams and easy-to-read advice make this an invaluable resource for all motorcyclists, no matter how experienced. Why Motorcyclists Crash and How to Prevent it Happening to You will be handed out by DocBike and Bikesafe representatives at their courses and events. Devitt will also be offering a limited number of free booklets to UK training schools for distribution to new riders. DocBike is a charity putting highly trained trauma doctors or critical care paramedics on two wheels. Working alongside local emergency services, it provides life-saving critical care while helping to prevent crashes from happening in the first place. BikeSafe is a national police-run motorcycle initiative. It’s aimed at working with motorcycle riders in a relaxed environment to raise awareness of the importance and value of progressing to accredited post-test training. DocBike research shows that up to 80% of biker deaths and serious injuries can be avoided, regardless of fault, by having the sort of awareness that this leaflet brings. We hope that this booklet goes some way to giving bikers the awareness needed to really get the most of out of riding whilst being less likely to crash." I'm thinking about that poor woman who got knocked down and killed in Shoreditch by a hipster kid on a track bike with no brakes. Been thinking about it all day and just as yet another car passes me way too close, I realise that pedestrians are to bikes, what bikes are to cars. And I just hope to shit that everyone's paying attention as much as I am. I hope, but I'm pretty certain loads are not. I politely told the guy at the lights that he passed too close and nodded and apologised. Welp. Got into my first real bike/car accident today. Luckily this U-lock was the only casualty. A car swerving in traffic side swiped me on Columbia Rd, pinning me into another car & I flew over the handle bars. Tumbled out like a pro 🏆 a little banged up but I walked away. Another yoga teacher biking along the street saw it & came up to help me. While I did not keep my cool, and let out some rage at the driver, I'm grateful that this wasn't worse. BikeSafe takes delivery of ten Ducati Multistrada 1200 as it joins forces with the RAF to improve service personnel motorcycle training.

RAF Brize Norton was the location for the official handover of ten Ducati Multistrada 1200 motorcycles to BikeSafe, a police led initiative to reduce the number of motorcyclists involved in accidents on the road by improving skills, knowledge and hazard awareness. The location was also chosen to highlight BikeSafe’s partnership with the RAF that will involve the police putting an estimated 2,500 motorcycle riding RAF personnel through the workshops.

The Multistrada 1200 was chosen by BikeSafe after an extensive evaluation process and deemed to be the most suitable motorcycle to assist the various forces throughout the UK to deliver the BikeSafe workshops, feature at shows, events and bike meets.

The purchase of the bikes is funded by Highways England, which is responsible for 4000 miles of England’s motorways and major A routes. Highways England has seen the results and benefits of the BikeSafe project and sees improving rider skills as one way of achieving its aims to reduce rider casualties on its road network.

Ducati UK along with the motorcycle industry has been an important supporter to the BikeSafe project regularly loaning its bikes to them in police livery for use at shows, race meetings and bike meets. Ducati motorcycles that BikeSafe have used in the past has included, a 1299 Panigale, a Scrambler, a Diavel and for this year the new SuperSport.

Assistant Chief Constable Nick Adderley the National Police Chiefs Council lead for BikeSafe said “We are delighted by the recognition and direct support that BikeSafe has received from Highways England, a national body that is working in partnership with BikeSafe to reduce motorcycle casualties. This has enabled BikeSafe to purchase this fantastic fleet of Ducati motorcycles.,These exciting and dynamically engaging bikes will be used for BikeSafe engagement and education of motorcyclists across the country, as well as keeping our service personnel safe through our partnership with the RAF.”

BikeSafe take delivery of Police liveried Panigale V4 from Ducati UK

Nick Adderley – Assistant Chief Constable for Staffordshire Police and National Lead of the BikeSafe project joined Ducatisti at the annual Ducati UK track day at Silverstone to take delivery of a new Panigale V4 decaled in Police livery.

The Panigale V4 has been loaned to BikeSafe as part of Ducati UK’s commitment to the BikeSafe Project. Assistant Chief Constable Nick Adderley and members of the BikeSafe team took the opportunity to take the track alongside Ducati devotees and put the Panigale V4 through its paces.

BikeSafe is a police led motorcycle project that is run by most forces throughout the UK. The main aim is to reduce the number of bikers being hurt on the roads. The focus of BikeSafe is that riding should be fun, and by improving skills, knowledge and hazard awareness it will hopefully make riding safer and more enjoyable.  Their workshop explores the main riding hazards that biker faces. By delivering theory presentations and observed rides, a BikeSafe workshop help riders discover their strengths and weakness and develop their riding.

They want to come over to us and enjoy the bike with us and it gives us the opportunity to really speak to them and educate them about safe riding.”
