The sword does not sing for her, the stars do not speak to him. It is a cycle of try and fail, try and fail, try and fail. Still they persist, sharing these pieces of themselves with each other, for it is not skill they seek, but the simple pleasure of time spent with someone who feels like home.

The Fête blooms around them: balloons bobbing in every color amongst the stars; the air fills with the sweet scents of fresh apple tart, cinnamon pecans in little paper bags, toasted sugar. Laughter and music echo through the plaza, bold and unafraid. He’s surprised when she slips her hand in his, grip warm and insistent as she pulls him along. She needn’t bother, he would go with her anywhere she asks. He prays she never lets go.

Or perhaps they do; they simply do not care. “I promise,” Ajisai says, hoping the dead might hear her. She whispers to no one no—to everyone, "that tonight, your loved ones will see a sky full of stars.”

Adventure calls to the girl, so she climbs the cliffside to reach the Heron's Flight—where the spring water is so pure that even the kami drink from it. She's delighted to find one, an okami with fur like red flame. The girl reaches one small hand out to her. "It's okay, don't be scared," she says. "I just want to be your friend."

I stayed up all night with him, just talking. He told me about his adventures, about Seto and Voeburtenburg. In exchange, I told him about Pillion and Ishgard, about my journey. We stood together at my window for a long while when he pointed at a cluster of stars, showed me the shapes of his constellations, taught me their names. I like to think of him as my friend; I hope he feels the same about me.

I have it in my head that Aymeric meets Ajisai's mom during Ghimlyt Dark and she just immediately disregards his height, build, and fancy regalia, and calls him 'kiddo' . Because when you've lived as long as Kana Kawanami, you lose the patience for silly things like propriety and fancy titles.
