There are four different hornbill species in Bhutan. The only species among them that can be found up to around 2000 metres and, sporadically, up to about 2400 metres is the Rufous-necked Hornbill. The Himalayas, from Bhutan to Arunachal Pradesh, and Northeast India are home to the Rufous-necked hornbill. BirdLife International has rated this hornbill species as Vulnerable. Golden-breasted Fulvetta (Lioparus chrysotis) January 2021 Namling: Mongar Bhutan l. It is a species of songbird found in Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are broad-leaved evergreen forests and montane bamboo where they forage at a low height for insects, moving in groups of as many as 30 individuals in winter, and often join mixed-species foraging flocks. A stunning little bird, extremely brightly-colored for a fulvetta. Body is lit up by yellow undersides and sunny orange patches on the wings. Coal-black head with a white ear is reminiscent of Coal Tit, but rounder and crestless. Color scheme loosely resembles that of Silver-eared Mesia, which is much larger and has a more elongated body shape. In recent years, demand for its "Red Ivory" casque has nearly driven it to extinction.

Now, our Partner Hong Kong Birdwatching Society has teamed up with The University of Hong Kong - HKU - 香港大學 to use DNA analysis to stop poaching at its source.

Streaked Spiderhunter (Arachnothera magna) January 2021 Tingtibi: Zhemgang Bhutan. It is a species of bird in the family Nectariniidae. This species can be found alone or in pairs. The nesting season is from March to July. The nest is usually made of leaves that are tied together with cobwebs, and they are found attached to the reverse side of a leaf. It feeds on the nectar of flowers such as the wild banana blossom. A large and noisy inhabitant of tropical and subtropical hill forests. Distinctive in its range; a large spiderhunter with a long, curved black bill and black streaking all over its yellow-green upperparts and lighter yellow underparts. Gleans invertebrates from foliage, but also hovers around and probes into flowers for nectar. Often moves with mixed flocks.
