An inspiring weave of South Pacific traditions and modern dance, Black Grace, founded 20 years ago by Neil Ieremia—a then 19-year-old New Zealand bank clerk—moves with a dynamic athleticism and rhythmic intensity that brings worldwide audiences to their feet. With an international array of superb, risk-taking dancers from Maori, Samoan, and New Zealand cultures, the much-honored Black Grace is rich in storytelling expressed with raw finesse, unique beauty, and power.

Minoi (1999) Minoi fuses a traditional Samoan dance style known as Fa’ataupati (slap dance) and western contemporary dance as a means of exploring cultural identity issues, live singing, and vocalizations.

Pati Pati (2009)
This work is a mixture of excerpts from older repertoire that utilizes body percussion in uenced by traditional Samoan Sasa (seated dance) and Fa’ataupati (slap dance).

As Night Falls (2016) A poetic ode to our troubled world, As Night Falls is a beautiful new work set to the timeless and passionate sounds of Antonio Vivaldi.
“As Night Falls is bold and bright like the colourful muumuu dresses worn by my mother without shame or ceremony.
I had initially wanted this work to be the expression of my concerns and fears of the darkness that seems to be eroding the value of equality and human life.
Instead, I feel compelled to respond with a contrasting beauty and physical vitality, musicality and hope.  It is my offer of beauty for ashes.”

I think I have decided on my designers and found a blurb about each. Now its time to start designing the brochure!
Sarah Maxey is a graphic artist. Her distinctive work has graced publications worldwide, including the New York Times and many literary books. She worked for Bloomsbury Publishing in the mid-nineties, and has run her own studio since. She has won numerous awards, most recently the 2011 Purple Pin, the highest graphic design accolade in her native New Zealand and a Certificate of Excellence from the International Society of Typographers.

Catherine Griffiths is a designer and typographer, who lives and works in Auckland and Paris. Her work is a mix of visual communication, book design, self-publishing, typography installations in public and private spaces, and writing on design. Her most publicly-recognised work is the Wellington Writers Walk, a series of large-scale concrete text sculptures.

Gina Kiel is an award winning illustrator based in Wellington, New Zealand. She creates feminine yet strong images that exude sensuality and explore ideas of life, death and pop culture using a bright psychedelic colour palette and a range of analog and digital mediums.
With a childhood full of music, nature, Disney movies and hours of drawing, Gina became an illustrator after working at a boutique animation company, drawing frame-by-frame at a lightbox, where she discovered her love for drawing body parts.
Represented in Australia and New Zealand by illustration agency The Drawing Book Studios and represented in the US by Deborah Wolfe at Illustration Online. Gina can be found exhibiting at group shows around the world, creating for clients at her home studio or working alongside Inject Design to create some of New Zealand’s most iconic design work.

Shabnam Shiwan is partner and creative director at Osborne Shiwan, a design studio focussed on strategically led creative.
Shabnam is one of New Zealand’s most celebrated designers. As design director at Alt Group and Saatchi & Saatchi Design Worldwide, she has created many memorable projects such as the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery brand identity, Fisher & Paykel Social Kitchen and Auckland Theatre Company campaigns.
Shabnam has considerable experience, working with a diverse range of clients including ASB Bank, Spark, O2TODAY, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, Blackgrace, Delverde, Child Labor Free, and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.
Her work has been recognised in New Zealand’s Best Awards and AGDA (Australia), for which she has also been a judge, as well as internationally, in the Red Dot Awards (Germany), Clio (USA), ADC (USA), TDC (USA), AIGA (USA) and One Show (USA). Her typographic design has been exhibited in Objectspace and published in both Graphis and I.D. magazines.

Founded in 2005, Ariane Spanier Design is a Berlin-based design studio focused on print design for architects, galleries and publishers. The founder, Ariane Spanier, is a graduate of the Weissensee Kunsthochschule Berlin School of Art and spent some time in New York, including working at the Stefan Sagmeister design studio, before returning home.

Blink of an Eye explores our ephemeral place in time, space, and history, through the use of historical costume accessories, hand held theatrical lights, and music from divergent historical periods. It was influenced by Ms. Nelson’s six-week pilgrimage to the Camino de Santiago, a route to the shrine of the apostle St. James the Great in northwestern Spain.
Blink of an Eye is made possible by contributions from the Amphion Foundation, Richard Grand Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Bernard Osher Foundation, and the Kenneth Rainin Foundation
Giant plays with perceptions of the heroic body by fantasizing out loud about potency and valor. Playing with scale and feeling, Giant flips from idea to idea, toying with our assumptions of where — and how — power lies. Dubbed “the voice of the ‘it’s complicated’ generation,” by Dance Magazine, Weare charts her own humanism by tackling head-on the violence, sensuality, and yearning for intimacy that mark our age. Giant is made possible by White Bird’s ‘Barney’ Creative Prize and ODC’s Artistic Venture Fund.
Celebrate ‘Women on the Move’ with an evening of cocktails, dinner, spectacular performances by ODC/Dance, and an after-party at the St. Regis and YBCA. This unforgettable night will feature the performance of Kimi Okada’s Two if by Sea, as well as excerpts of KT Nelson’s Blink of an Eye, Kate Weare’s Giant, and Triangulating Euclid, Brenda Way and KT Nelson’s collaboration with Kate Weare.
