Black Manhattan Cocktail

Manhattan...the cocktail so dark that even Skeletor has to make an appearance. Ok, so Bryan may still be a tad obsessed with his 80’s toys. Did you know that Skeletor actually came with us on our honeymoon?! He even posed for pictures at the Grand Canyon and other sites. 😳 Not joking.

And I must mention the candied, chili bacon side which pairs perfectly with this spirit-forward cocktail. The bacon was dredged with a brown-sugar, chili powder mix and then skewered and baked at 400 degrees. The sweet & spicy exterior of the bacon is highlighted by the bitter flavors in the cocktail. It’s truly an amazing match!

History

This cocktail was originally concocted by Todd Smith when he was working at Bourbon & Branch in San Francisco.  The original recipe calls for Amaro Averna and Rye Whiskey.   Bryan played around with this drink and since Averna is on the sweeter side, he wanted to give the cocktail a little bit more of kick with an Amaro that leans to the bitter.  Amaro dell'Etna is an Amaro that just hit the US market in 2018 and has a great balance between bitter and sweet.

Ingredients

3 oz Pearse Lyons Reserve Whiskey

1 oz Amaro Ramazzotti

.5 oz Amaro dell'Etna

2 dashes Angostura bitters

2 dashes orange bitters

1 Luxardo Maraschino Cherry

Directions

Combine ingredients and stir together with ice.  Strain into a coupe glass.  Garnish with a Luxardo Maraschino cherry.

#Repost @yahblackmanhattan #latepost On this St. Patrick's day, I'm reminded of two Irish men, Decker and Paddy McCaffrey and their efforts in helping orphan children escape for their lives from a vicious mob. During the Draft Riot of 1863 a ruthless mob of several hundred men, women and children broke down the front door with an ax and proceeded to ransack the Colored Orphan Asylum building and set it on fire. The mob stole whatever were in their sights. Thankfully, while the mob was focused on gaining entrance, the superintendent of the Asylum, William E. Davis, and the head matron, Jane McClellan, quietly snuck all 233 children out the back door. As the children were escaping, some of them were surrounded by the angry mob. Fortunately, two Irishman, Decker and Paddy McCaffrey, rescued twenty of the orphan children, as the crowd who gathered around the poor children cried out, "Murder the damned monkeys." Had it not been for the courageous conduct of the two Irish men, there is little doubt that many, and perhaps all of those helpless children, would have been murdered in cold blood.
