It's the way that Nukoku's metamorphosis/shedding her shell is a visual callback to Allison removing her prosthetics when she left Jadis.

It's the transformation, it's the becoming, it's the blood, it's the way they (we) are indelibly marked and changed by our experiences, it's the rejection of that which is meant to protect us in favor of that which is true and real, it's the pain, it's the way we can never go back, it's the creation, it's the way even in seeking peace they are creating their own peace through violence, carving it out of themselves if necessary, it's the reclamation and recreation of self where the self has been stripped away through suffering.

Okay, I've been sitting with it, and real talk: please please please I hope the magic immortality worm did not cure/"fix" Allison's disabilities.

I don't think it's going to be permanent/more than an illusion, because that would undermine the entire theme of the work, but I'm genuinely worried that Abaddon is going to just bring back the fan favorite Cio even if it does go against literally everything the work stands for, and in doing so also fuck up his protagonist. I don't think that'll happen, I haven't been given a reason to believe that other than that I've been burned before, but. Yeah. The central theme of transformation, and the way that that shows up in characters' actual bodies has been really important to me. The disabled main character has been really important to me. I hope she doesn't get a magic cure.

Honestly, and this is probably an unpopular opinion, as much as I love and miss Cio and want her back, I only want her back if it's earned. The whole point of this series is that we can't go back to what we were before. Cio can't be the same Cio she was. The wheel has to turn, that's the whole point.

I hope Abaddon doesn't lose sight of that just to placate the fanbase.

The next panel shows Cio looking over her shoulder, eyes narrowed. She says, "There's another way to open the door."

Allison, sweating and looking horrified, says, "Oh. Fuck. No. Fuck no." Felicia, still covering her ears, has a speech bubble with just two question marks in it.

Cio, looking down, says, "It's so obvious, so ingenious. Arguing it about it only loses you time. And even if you do open the door. It poisons your group. Sows mistrust and fear. It's the perfect defense."

Cio turns fully to the group, eyes narrowed. The open mouth is fully visible behind her. She says, "I thought of this door often. Only someone like Yabalchoath could open it. Somebody with no friends in the world. Because there's only one way to beat it."

The final panel shows Oscar dragging Lucky Felicia backwards; Felicia is crying and sweating. Oscar says, "Yeah! Decide who to feed to the door before you even start! Keh heh heh!"
