The Nissan Altima is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Nissan since 1992. It is a continuation of the Nissan Bluebird line, which began in 1955.

The Altima has historically been larger, more powerful, and more luxurious than the Nissan Sentra but less so than the Nissan Maxima. The first through fourth generation cars were manufactured exclusively in the United States and officially sold in North and South America, along with the Middle East and Australia. For other markets, Nissan sold a related mid-size sedan called the Nissan Teana which was between the Altima and Maxima in terms of size. In 2013, the Teana became a rebadged version of the fifth generation Altima.

The name "Altima" was originally applied to a top trim line of the Nissan Leopard for the Japanese market in 1986, and then to the Nissan Laurel mid-size car sold in Central America and the Caribbean before 1992. In 1992, Nissan discontinued the Stanza which was a Nissan Bluebird clone, replacing it with the US-built Altima, while remaining a compact car. The first Altima was produced in June 1992, as a 1993 model. All Altima models were built in Smyrna, Tennessee, until June 2004, when Nissan's Canton, Mississippi plant also began producing the model to meet high demand.

Junkyard Gem: 1979 Datsun 210

One of the last rear-wheel-drive Nissan econoboxes sold in the U.S.

We’re all about affordable cars, especially Datsun cars, and we found this article quite interesting! Luckily the cars at Group 1 Datsun don’t look like this poor Datsun 210 - even though they’re super affordable cars. Enjoy the read!

Nissan spent the 1970s making good money in North America by selling rear-wheel-drive, Datsun-badged economy cars based on the Nissan Sunny, with the super-stingy Datsun B210 arriving just in time for the 1973 oil crisis. The B210's successor, sold in North America as the 210, debuted here for the 1979 model year and held the econobox fort for Nissan until the more modern, front-wheel-drive Nissan Sentra appeared in 1982. I don't see many of these cars during my junkyard explorations of recent years since most of them depreciated to nothingness a couple of decades back, but I found this first-year example in a Denver self-service yard a few months ago.

Things got pretty confusing with Datsun names around this time; this car had the B310 platform designation within the Nissan organization, but the 310 name went onto a car based on the Japanese-market Pulsar, itself a member of the Nissan Cherry family. Meanwhile, the much-beloved 510 name got pasted onto the North American version of the Nissan Violet. The real 510's Bluebird chassis begat the 610, 710, 810, and (badged as both a Datsun and a Nissan) the Maxima.

Except for a couple of holdouts (e.g., the Chevrolet Chevette), just about every cheap North American-market compact and subcompact went to front-wheel-drive before the 1980s were half over. The 1979-1982 Datsun 210 was the last of the penny-pinching rear-wheel-drive Nissans available over here. Power came from this 1.4-liter four-cylinder, rated at 65 horsepower— not enough to be quick, but acceptable by 1979 standards and extremely fuel-efficient.

This car's final owner got every bit of life out of the old Datsun before discarding it. In addition to rust, body filler, a grubby interior, and mangled sheet metal from multiple fender-benders, the acrylic-and-packaging-tape glass replacement ensures a resale value approaching scrap levels.

These cars proved to be solid competition for the Corolla and Civic of the era (though not as reliable as the Toyota and not as much fun to drive as the Honda), and they were common sights on the streets of non-Rust Belt regions well into the late 1990s.

The evolution of the #NissanMaxima begins with the arrival of the 1977 Datsun 810, a stretched six-cylinder Datsun Bluebird. An angular, longer, lower 810 arrived for 1981 and got the Maxima name a year later. It looked quite different to the original 810, but underneath much was the same. The opposite was true when the next Maxima debuted in late 1984. In just four years, the Datsun 810 had become the Nissan Maxima, and the new Maxima swapped I-6s for a V6, and rwd for front. It was a time of change. - As before, the Maxima was based on the Bluebird, this time with the internal “U-11” designation. Externally, the new cars hardly differed at all from their predecessors - conservative, boxy styling was an aerodynamic billboard - with a cd of .39. But underneath, much was new - the U-11 Bluebird and PU-11 Maxima were now fwd and the Maxima ditched it’s 120-hp 2.4L I-6 for a 152-hp VG30E V6, shared with the 300ZX. Fwd or no, the new Maxima was much sportier than the original. The top-spec SE came only with a manual and typically with monochrome trim. Responsive and luxurious, it was a good rival to Toyota’s Cressida, but Nissan was struggling. - Nissan had become the number 3 automaker in the world by 1981 but at home growth was way down and Nissan’s conservative culture - which produced the U-11’s boxy lines and tended to make “play it safe” choices - was not helping, despite a charismatic leader, Takahashi Ishihara (who greenlit Nissan’s factory in Tennessee and studio in California), whose style alienated some union leaders in Japan. Oddly, Ishihara’s most infamous decision didn’t play it safe at all. Fearful of losing out on foreign investment, he dumped the Datsun name in 1983 to the chagrin of almost everyone except himself. Confusion over the branding lasted for years. - Nissan got a new CEO around the time the 2nd-gen Maxima came online, Yutaka Kume. Kume, who’d been in charge of engineering during the U-11 development, slashed bureaucracy at Nissan and shook up the design culture, resulting in a renaissance of new products and sales increases - until the Japanese asset bubble burst.
