I really love how you always write at least a paragraph when you answer asks, it really makes me feel like you care and are listening to me.

Well I do care and I am trying to listen and understand what everyone says to the best of my abilities! And also I very often have a lot to say about many things and you all don't seem to mind it. I may get confused by things or miss things, but it's never intentional

I just know that for me, at least, sending asks can be very stressful and I want to either alleviate that or make it worth someone's effort. Hence, longer responses to I can articulate that. It does mean I'm slower with responses a lot of the time (hello asks in my inbox from september and october...), but I do genuinely enjoy engaging with all of them and try to give every single ask I get the attention it deserves.

I'm very honored to receive the questions I do and flattered that people want to hear my thoughts, so I think listening as best I can is the least I can do :)

what do you think the main crew's handwriting looks like?

!!! I've actually thought about this before! if you look at the art I did for the wing designs in the wings au, all the names are written slightly differently to kinda embody what i think their writing would be like--that being said it's not exactly what I think their handwriting would be like (and I haven't done all the characters), as it still needed to be legible, but it's inspired.

Shannon also gave several characters handwriting in terms of font, but that also still had to be legible so I think it's more inspired than entirely accurate as well. That being said Elwin's is in the medical records starting on page 29, Dex's is on page 347 with his alchemy tips and 338-339, there's a lot of Keefe's on pgs 481-503, Sophie on 367-404, Fitz on 328, Biana on 322-325, Tam on 287-288, and Linh on 289-290. Flori also has her handwriting on 315-316, and I think (?) that's all of them.

but those are fonts so!! I'll write their names how I think they'd do so under the cut :) (also will type out what each says so you can read it)

imagine if grady or edaline just died

I am. I am going to politely ask you why you would do such a thing to us /lh

okay but now i am imagining it, and I think that depending on who died there would be two different yet equally intriguing turns in the story. they'd both greatly impact Sophie, but it'd be in the details where you can see the nuance.

If Grady died, I think Sophie would be enraged and devastated over the lost of control, over the protection. Because Grady has always been this protective figure in her life even if he isn't a fighter. He's strong and opinionated, but kind. He has always been incredibly loving and prioritizes Sophie over everything else. Losing that would make Sophie more bold, more protective over the rest of her friends, and she'd feel more alone. Because if Grady isn't there to be strong she's going to be strong, and she is going to be loud and defiant because how dare they take him from her.

If Edaline died, Sophie would mourn the loss of her kindness, of her gentle strength, of the softness she somehow maintained despite everything she endured. I think this would make Sophie more...stealthy? I can't think of the right word, but she'd be deliberate. She'd be cunning and meticulous, a quiet danger compared to the loud response she'd have with Grady. In retaliation for taking someone so caring from her, Sophie is going to slowly dismantle the Neverseen, and she is going to do it so thoroughly they'd have no hope of ever recovering. Everything inside her goes quiet.

But regardless of which parents died (or if they both did), I think that would be a mistake the Neverseen would regret. Because the person Sophie would become is someone they can't understand, can't predict, and can't fight against. The absolute conviction sparked in her that she'd have and the need to retaliate, to hurt the people who hurt her, that's something they couldn't undo. It'd turn her into someone unrecognizable, something with different limits and boundaries, willing to do a lot more than before because of how she hurt. They crossed a line that cannot be uncrossed and all that's left is to weather the hell she'll rain on them for it, except it won't be survivable.

She won't stop until they're gone, until they're naught but dust in faded memories. There may be other significant events and turning points in the battle against them, but I think looking back after they're defeated it could all be traced back to when they made Sophie Foster break.

Threatening her parents gives them power over Sophie because they're a bargaining chip, but killing them? She can't lose them anymore, and so she will do whatever it takes to get them back.

juline and dex were cousins by blood, so they have probably interacted before, and he may have even met Brant. there is probably something in the books that contradicts this, but how do you think he would have felt that his kidnapper was his cousin's fiance? and that was the same guy that killed his cousin

As interesting as it would be to see Dex's reaction to something like there, you're right: there is something in the books that contradicts this. In book one Alden explains that "Grady and Edaline lost their only daughter about fifteen years ago" (pg 128, paperback). And since in book one Dex is a level 2, that makes him about 12-ish at the time. Jolie died a few years before he was even born, so they wouldn't have ever had a chance to meet or for him to meet Brant through her.

We could instead look at how it might've felt for Dex to know that he does have some relation to Brant, that if things had worked out differently they would've been family! That a cousin he never got to meet was killed by her fiance, someone he would've come to know. Someone who might've been a role model to him. I mean, Jolie and Brant were a bad match and so are Dex's parents, so that's a significant shared experience the two of them have that they could've bonded over.

Brant was (from what i can remember) really upset with how the system worked, and Dex also held/holds a grudge against it. And yet they somehow ended up on entirely different sides of the battle.

So I think a lot of the shock from the situation would come from him overthinking all the what ifs? What if Brant hadn't accidentally started that fire? Would Jolie have been able to turn him from the Neverseen? Would he have gotten to meet both of them? Would he have been related to Brant through marriage? Would they have spent time together? Would they have shared ideas? If Brant was still in the Neverseen would he have tried to recruit him? What if he'd accepted?

It's a really huge vague possibility, because there are so many things that could've happened but didn't and he'll never know what it would've been. But he and Brant were potentially a lot closer to each other than they ever realized. And now this person who helped in his and Sophie's kidnapping, permanently scarred them, and attacks the people he cares about has a relation to him. A kinda "what could have been" situation. because in a different world they would've been family, they might've even been close, and they're aware that it could've happened but didn't come to fruition, so they have this history that isn't there. Let me see if I can think of a comparison. You know when something happens like you break a glass and shards fly everywhere and you're like "...a piece of that could've gone in my eye," but it didn't yet you still know it could've happened. It didn't happen, but you still know. That kinda vibe mixed with a whole bunch of anger over what Brant's done to them.

While Dex might not have felt the exact things you were describing, it's possible that Juline and Kesler could've, as they were also related by blood to Jolie and could've met Brant. For Dex it's a what could have been situation, but still fascinating to look at so thanks for bringing it up!

It kinda irks me that Edaline bought Sophie really fancy clothes, before even after Edaline realises that sophie doesn't really like extravagant clothes she doesn't do anything to get her new clothes that she feels more comfortable in. I know it's not exactly a priority but yeah.

it is a detail that is a little annoying at times, inconsequential as it is to the overall story. Like hello?? Sophie has made her discomfort in the Lost Cities' preferred gowns quite clear. Both verbally and with body language. Also, it should be telling what she does choose to wear, which is never the big frilly dresses when she can get away with it.

A lot of the clothes shopping was done at the very beginning of the series. Della bought Sophie a lifetimes supply of elven clothes in the first part of the first book, which is more excusable since Della knew absolutely nothing about Sophie at that point in time. She'd talked to her for a few pages, and that was it! Then she bought a million (/hyp) dresses because she didn't know she'd be uncomfortable in them. And given that her only daughter, who was similar in age, greatly enjoyed dresses it makes sense she'd assume Sophie was similar. Like oh this is what my daughter likes so maybe you'll like it too!

The next time Sophie acquires new clothes is in Everblaze, where Edaline buys Sophie even more clothes, many of which are colorful and frilly--one that even has a train. Edaline says that she knows Sophie doesn't really like dresses, but that didn't stop her from buying so many. I think she says something like she tried to buy more toned down ones, not fully realizing that Sophie would instead prefer no dresses at all. It's an improvement from what Della bought, but it's still not Sophie.

In Edaline's defense, I don't think Sophie ever told her that she didn't really like the dresses she bought. They were at a point in their relationship where they were still settling into things, and Sophie didn't want to cause any problems or rock the boat. And it was a sweet gesture on Edaline's behalf, just happened to be aimed at a person who wouldn't necessarily want it. Sophie appreciates the thought behind it, even if she doesn't like dresses. So I don't think she'd necessarily know to correct it right away, as Sophie tries to be appreciative

Regardless, it still irksome that several books into the series Sophie still doesn't have a wardrobe she likes!! Clothes are a huge part of comfort and self expression, so not having that outlet is a little icky. Is it a huge deal? No. But it does have an effect. I think the reason that it takes so long for Sophie to get clothes she likes is because Shannon uses the wardrobe to help emphasis Sophie's alternate upbringing and how she doesn't fit into the elven world.

Despite the months she's spent there, there's still something other about her. She dresses differently, is more understated, likes to wear pants and avoid bringing attention to herself. She doesn't see beauty the same way. All of those are little hints into the distinction between her and the elven world. It's a minor dissonance that stays consistent throughout the series, always subtly marking her as other.

It does reach a point though where it's like "alright when is this girl gonna get some actual clothes though," which is Flashback. That's when Flori sews her new clothes with pockets to hold weapons and sophie describes it as "pretty much her dream wardrobe." So finally!! Seven books into the series she gets clothes that she likes!! Now, instead of distinguishing her from elven customs by talking about her discomfort in elven clothes, Shannon can make it by comparing Sophie's new wardrobe against the extravagance of elven gowns.

She's no longer a character trying to situate herself in a world where she's not quite sure she belongs, now she's a character defining herself in a world as belonging but different. She's taking a step away from the extravagance, still involved in everything but comfortable with her presentation now.

It's interesting though because it took almost the entire series and when it finally happened it wasn't even at elven hands. it was Flori, a gnome, who gave Sophie her dream wardrobe. I think that kind of shows how despite all her friends and families' efforts, there's always going to be a part of her that belongs solely to her that they can't fully understand. They can try, but it's different from their way of life and she likes it like that and they won't know why, though they can support her.

It's a fascinating look at her relationship to her world, so thank you for bringing it up!!

keeper crew should have a big sleepover filled with human movies, karaoke, and pillow fights.

oh that would be so sweet!! The last time they had a large scale sleepover (that I can remember, at least) was in Lodestar with Sophie, Biana, Fitz, and Dex and it's a scene that I always love to read. Like the four of them just hanging out, being productive and messing with each other a little, but genuinely supporting each other when they need to.

Biana even talked about how she could imagine how they'd rearrange the sleeping bags to fit Keefe (as he was with the Neverseen at this point in time) so I've always wanted a future book to have that sleepover with everyone--though now it would have significantly more people as Tam, Linh, and Marella are more part of the group (at least. others may be added as well).

And!! Your proposal is such a fun sleepover!! In the Lodestar one, they were really stressed out because they thought the Neverseen would attack their parents and they spent the afternoon/night going through all those scrolls and dealing with the imparter. It would be nice for them to have a genuine sleepover where they're not worrying, where they're having fun and laughing and at ease.

Sophie could show everyone pieces of her childhood, of the human customs she grew up with--like the karaoke and movies!! I think the elves have pillow fights, but not the other two! They could make popcorn and have human snacks, maybe wear human pajamas, and just generally have fun with each other. They deserve to relax. The world has been placed upon their shoulders and it is wearing them down, they should get the chance to enjoy their childhood and to mess around with their friends.

In conclusion you are absolutely right and the kotlcrew all deserve to have a huge sleepover together where they hang out and have fun and let go of the huge worries that have been plaguing them for so long. Excellent fic inspiration right there <33

It's been a while since anyone has died. I feel like Shannon will kill someone off in the next few books. If so, who do you think it will be?

I've talked about this a little before, which you can find linked here, but in case you don't want to read that I'll do a quick summary. I think Sandor is likely to die by the end of the series, and Shannon even said once that she'd planned to kill him in every book since he's been introduced. So that being said there have definitely been Sandor Death Plans, but whether or not she's still planning to kill him in uncertain. But I think it will happen, which may be the kind of motivation Sophie needs to really loose herself and unleash herself on the Neverseen. it would definitely be interesting!!

Given the rate of death in the series, I don't know if there's time for more than one in the final two books, but then again we're building up to the ending of the series so the consistency is bound to become less reliable as things ramp up. In that case, I'd guess...maybe one more death of Sophie's allies and one or two of her enemies? I don't think the ally death would be one of the main 12 in her friend group, just because Shannon doesn't seem like the type to write that. She seems more like a "everyone is going to make it through somehow. I don't know how, but they're going to be okay" kind of writer. Which isn't a bad thing!! It's only an observation and assumption that we can rule those 12 out.

Who it would be would be vague speculation on my part though. If Sandor does die, then I'd rule out any of the bodyguards so it doesn't feel repetitive. I'd probably rule out Flori because we've already gone through Calla's death. Maybe Mr. Forkle could be ruled out because his brother is already dead, but then again it could be used as both brothers dying and finally being together again. I feel like all the parents fall under the "everyone is going to make it through somehow" thing or the "it's already been done" like how Alden already has a wanderling. Same with the Council, as Kenric already got roasted.

This is a random guess, but maybe a member of the Collective? Yes, Forkle 1 already died, but it didn't actually impact the collective the same way. So if it were to be one of them, I'd guess Tiergan because he's had the most impact on Sophie's life and would have the most affect on her after death. He's been her mentor for long enough and gotten to know her well enough that it would hurt a lot more than someone like Wraith or Blur.

and then there's the matter of who in the Neverseen would die, as for something like the finale of the series there would have to be more than just losses on Sophie's side for it to stay balanced.

I don't think Fintan will die, but he's the only one I'm really certain of. Oh and Alvar will probably die, but that was kinda assumed since Sophie found him all weak and not looking too hot. I wonder if Lady Gisela will die, as she's been a key player and caused a lot of hurt and it would be dramatic story-wise. I don't think Vespera will, but she'd have to be dealt with somehow.

There's many possibilities and so little time left in the books, so it's hard to say exactly what will happen! I'm kinda basing this on what I would do if I were writing the story and also the patterns Shannon's just been following, but that's just my interpretation. Shannon might come around and shock me and finally kill Sophie in a self-sacrificial final moment. Though that would be devastating for everyone and it doesn't seem in line with everything else that's happened. I do think a few of Sophie's friends will acquire more scars, but I don't think they'll die.

But who knows!!

oh yeah I saw that post too!! also I love this question. I won't look for actual photos because that will take me a while and not all of them exist but!! here's my thoughts!

Sophie: I'm thinking one of her photos from the baby book she took with her to the Lost Cities. She can't have her human family in her life anymore but she can always remember them, and seeing them on her phone is a nice way to keep them close. Maybe the photo is of multiple photographs laid out, whatever it is it's a tie to her human life

Fitz: Whatever his favorite human place he visited was, or maybe a collage of different human places. He can't take all the trinkets he took around with him, but he can have photographs of all the places he looked right in his back pocket. San Diego might be in the center for reasons

Keefe: he's got an innocuous lock screen of something very Keefe like a gulon or a photo of himself with a focus on The Hair, but his homescreen (which no one else is allowed to see) is a photo of Sophie. Some sweet moment of her just reading or doing homework that he took a photo of without her knowing

Biana: She's either got something bold like a photo of herself she particularly likes, or some photo she secretly took of her friends/family. Like everyone at a sleepover and she took a photo of everyone in their element to really capture them without them feeling the pressure of the camera, portraying a piece of them she gets to see where they're not pretending to be anyone but themselves, you know!

Dex: his is function over fashion, he's changing his wallpaper all the time to reflect things he needs to remember, to-do lists and materials he needs and things to remember, maybe it's animated. moving on it's own in this super confusing way to everyone but him. he can always reference it to see what he needs

Marella: She's got this super detailed collage of a bunch of things that she made herself. Photos she's taken of sunsets and photos with friends and quotes and all manner of things. I'm thinking a light blue color scheme, but I bet she changes it depending on her mood

Linh: Princess Purryfins 100%. Of course she's going to make her pet murcat her wallpaper, what else would she do? Maybe Princess Purryfins is sprawled out looking cute or staring off into the distance ofr has a bow on her head, whatever it is, LInh treasures the photo. Maybe she's even got one with Iggy in it as well

Tam: his lock screen is pure black because he's "too mature" for something as frivolous as a personalized lockscreen. secretly he's got a floral homescreen, some small flower growing alone amongst the rocks or something. may or may not be in black and white with a sentimental quote in handwritten font, he'll never tell

Stina: She's got a picture of one of the baby unicorns from Sterling Gables as her wallpaper. Maybe it's with it's mother, but it's one of the adorable little unicorns she works with, and she'll get defensive about them if she thinks someone is being judgy because how dare you say that about her unicorns

Maruca: A photo of her with her friends all grouped together and hanging out. Perhaps they're at the beach or there's a sunset behind them, but they're all smiling and having a great time together, and those are the memories she wants to make sure she never forgets so she sets them as her wallpaper

Wylie: I'm thinking either a photo of his parents from when he was a kid, a way to remember them and hold onto that image of them without falling victim to losing them to his memory, or a photo of his current family. Tiergan and Linh and Tam, as a reminder that things can get better and that he's got people who he cares about that care about him.

this isn't kotlc related, but I need to rant.

You know what makes my blood boil? When people compare pain. Saying "I had it so much harder than you, you think that is bad?" or "other people have it way worse than you, you shouldn't be sad" makes me so angry. I know that people may have it worse, but that does not make what is happening to me any easier or better. It makes me angry because it's invalidating my experience.

Thank you, I just needed to express how stupid it is that people say that.

Rants are entirely okay; I talk about kotlc a lot but anyone is welcome to diverge from that.

And I agree with you entirely, it's so dismissive, disrespectful, infuriating and downright inaccurate to the experience of pain to try and compare it. Thinking that pain is something that can be quantifiably compared and as such judged in relation to others is so not how that works in the slightest!! Pain is pain, and if you're in pain it should be addressed with respect and kindness.

What pain is "worse" is a matter of perspective. Sure, there might be common perspectives, but it's still perspective! And regardless of how much main someone else is in, that doesn't change the fact that you're in pain.

Your experience, whatever pain or emotions you're feeling are valid. It is entirely okay and normal and healthy to be upset about things or upset about being in pain, and no one else's should be factored into that. People telling you to ignore them do more harm than good, so please don't dismiss your pain. Don't let it slide or just suck it up, your pain deserves to be taken seriously and addressed.

Pain is not a competition. No one wins. Everyone will have a different experience, and the best thing we can do is to take care of each other through it all.

My dad's a nurse, and there's one thing he told me a while ago that's always stuck with me. I don't remember the exact wording, but it was essentially: we don't get to decide whether or not you're in pain. No one gets to decide how bad your experience or pain is except you. No matter anyone elses experience, this one is yours and no one can tell you whether or not you're in pain.
