Today on OldMotors.net (link in bio) we’re looking at the rarely-seen but world famous #BMWZ1. The first of BMW’s Z roadsters, the Z is for Zunkuft - the German word for “Future,” and the future arrived in October of 1988. That month journalists were turned loose in a set of Z1s in Punta Ala on the Tuscan coast, driving real production Z1s just three years and two months after the idea hit the drawing board as the first concept from BMW Technik AG, a corporate think tank set up by R&D director Wolfgang Reitzle in early 1985. The goal of Technik was to accelerate BMW’s production timelines and test out new tech - the Z1 was Technik’s first (as the name suggests) complete car. It was a whirlwind evolution. The two driving forces behind the Z1 were Technik’s engineering boss Ulrich Bez and designer Harm Lagaay - both had started out at Porsche and both would return there, and given a 10,000,000DM budget, they created exactly what you’d expect - an over-the-top, high-tech sports car. Bez hired Lagaay away from Ford’s design studio in Cologne and within four months the basic proposal was ready - BMW gave Technik the go-ahead to build a concept car in August of 1985, and the spaceframe-and-plastic-panel design evolved into a working prototype in exactly one year, complete with a new rear Z-axle suspension developed by Rudolf Müller, a design that would migrate to production BMWs. To gauge reaction, BMW leaked the car to @AutoMotorundSport and journalist Jürgen Lewandowski. The feedback was a flood tide of requests for it to be built, so another year was put in adapting it for limited production - BMW announced it would build the car in August of 1987 and the following month displayed prototypes at Frankfurt, where orders poured in. The car’s unique monocoque used many advanced techniques for the era - composites and lightweight materials, and the huge sills - designed for rigidity and crashworthiness - dictated the famous drop-down doors. Production finally began - in a corner of BMW’s Munich factory - in the summer of 1988. About 8,000 were made into 1991 at a rate of ~16 in a day.
